Perching a cable tuner, TiVo or Apple TV on top one of today’s slim television sets would require either amazing balancing skills, very strong adhesive or a bit of both.

For the last several years, Roku has been one of the companies selling devices that let users stream Internet video to their televisions from a big lineup of programming sources, including Netflix and Hulu Plus. Even though you can’t balance them on top of a modern television set, the Roku boxes are tiny things, roughly the size of a hockey puck.

Roku is announcing a plan on Wednesday to get rid of the box entirely.

The company is developing a product called the Roku Streaming Stick, a device that will be about the size of one of those miniature thumb drives you plug into a PC to back up documents and other files. The stick, which slips unobtrusively into an HDMI jack on the back of a TV, provides all of the same access to Roku’s video programming partners that one can get from a Roku box but without an extra piece of hardware dangling from the set by an umbilicus.

In an interview, Anthony Wood, Roku’s chief executive and founder, said the product was an outgrowth of the early consumer research Roku did as it was preparing to make its first Internet boxes. “What we found is that one of the biggest objections to the box was that it was there,” Mr. Wood said.

According to mobile app analytics company Flurry, over 20 million devices were activated between Christmas and New Year, and 1.2 billion apps were downloaded. That's about 60 percent higher than every week of December before Christmas, and marks the largest number of apps ever downloaded in a single week, passing a billion downloads for the first time.
Christmas Day was the high point of the week for activations, with 6.8 million. Downloads were a bit more spaced out, with only about a fifth of them taking place on the 25th. Flurry doesn't give numbers for iOS and Android individually, but Andy Rubin of Google tweeted the following a few days later:
Andy Rubin: UPDATE: There were 3.7M Android devices activated on 12/24 and 12/25.
From this and previous reports, Fortune's Philip Elmer-Dewitt deduced that about 1.6 million more iOS devices were activated on the 25th than Android ones. However, this doesn't account for Kindle activations, which he says wouldn't be counted in Rubin's tweet. Regardless of who took the top spot, if these numbers are right, Google and Apple have a lot to celebrate now that the holidays are over.
Japan's Sony and South Korean rival Samsung are dissolving their joint venture in liquid crystal display panels as Sony tries to stanch years of losses in its TV business.
Samsung Electronics Co. will buy all of Sony's shares in the joint venture for about 1.08 trillion Korean won ($935 million) subject to a final agreement, Sony Corp. said Monday.
The joint venture called S-LCD was set up in 2004. Sony, which fell behind in flat panel TVs, invested in a Samsung panel factory to ensure a steady supply of panels for its LCD TVs.
Sony's TV operation has lost money for seven straight years and the company is straining to return that key business to profit.
Source
The prices of TVs as well as panels have been dropping so it makes more sense to buy panels at the market rate than to invest in production.
S-LCD Corporation had been established in 2004 by Sony and Samsung, with this new deal – that will leave S-LCD a wholly owned Samsung subsidiary – expected to close by the end of January 2012. Sony will continue to source displays for some of its TVs from S-LCD.

“This transaction will enable [Sony] to monetize its shares in S-LCD and aims to secure a flexible and steady supply of LCD panels from Samsung, based on market prices and without the responsibility and costs of operating a manufacturing facility” the Japanese company says. As for Samsung, it “anticipates heightened flexibility, speed and efficiency in both panel production and business operations.”
The deal is another step in Sony’s attempts to bring its large-format LCD business into profit, the TV division proving to be a significant money pit in recent quarters. Back in November, Sony warned of losses of around $1.15bn, with under-performance in the TV segment a sizable contributor to that.
Initial goals of LCD production, Sony explained, had been set when there was a shortage of panels and the belief that demand would continue to grow. Both those factors proved unreliable, leaving Sony with a wasteful production setup. The company announced plans to divide the LCD business into three, one section handling the legacy LCD TV business (using Sony-designed and produced components), another the ODM business (using third-party components) and finally a group that would be responsible for “developing and designing the next generation TV.”
This app lets the user enter text in any text field on a Mac system, by speaking into the iPhone 4S. Once Air Dictate is installed on the iPhone and the receiver app on the Mac, the two devices can be linked for easy text entry by speech. Both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network to link.
How does Air Dictate use Siri to convert speech to text?

Apple expressly prohibits developers from using private Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). And, there aren’t any public APIs enabling Siri to take dictation. Avatron programmers, independent of Apple, have devised codes that empower Siri to automatically convert speech spoken into an iPhone 4S into a Mac’s text field, just as if it was typed on the computer’s keyboard.
I have tested Air Dictate and it is pretty good at accurately converting speech to text. It is not perfect, but can be a viable input method for 99 cents.

Smartphones have been in vogue for several years but in 2011 they really became the soul of the handset industry. Every vendor claims to have a smartphone portfolio that can be used by masses and classes. A few brands succeeded and a few are yet to shine through.

The craze for smartphones is reflected in the numbers. In the third quarter of 2011, IDC estimates that smartphone shipment to India market grew by 21.4 per cent, and Android overtook Symbian to emerge as the top platform in India.

A smartphone is defined by dual core processors, AMOLED screens, high definition video and camera quality, battery size, data storage capacity and apps. With enough computing power to handle most of the functionality of the typical information worker, a smartphone purchase is not an easy choice. What needs to be evaluated closely is the ease with which the user can manage email and multiple inboxes, use text messages to communicate, check the latest posts on social networking sites, search for important business news items and plan meetings on their smartphone.

Source: business-standard.com

Apple iPad 2 online sales will start in wee hours

If you're in the market to buy an iPad 2 online tomorrow, you're going to have to wake up a bit early.

Apple this morning announced that online sales of the iPad 2 will begin at 1 a.m. PT/4 a.m. ET, many hours ahead of when the new tablet goes on sale at the company's retail stores.

The company had previously told customers that online sales would begin the same day as the iPad 2's retail release, but had not provided the start time.

Retail availability of the iPad 2 remains unchanged, with Apple beginning sales at 5 p.m. local time at its 236 retail stores as well as at partner retailers like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, and carrier stores for Verizon Wireless and AT&T, the company said in its release.

Along with the start time, Apple also announced early arrivals of the GarageBand and iMovie iPad apps that the company demonstrated during the iPad 2's unveiling last week. The global authority on record breaking awarded that honor to the company's successful gestures-in-air controller for being the fastest-selling electronics device ever, selling an average of 133,333 units daily since its launch. To top things off, Microsoft announced Wednesday that the Kinect has sold 10 million units worldwide through the end of last month.

The Kinect's phenomenal sales record, including eight million units sold in the first 60 days since its release on November 4, outstrips "both the iPhone and the iPad for the equivalent periods after launch," according to Guinness.

 Five Million Projected

When it was released, Microsoft had projected selling five million units through the end of last year. Kinect's sales are a major factor in the 55 percent increase in revenue in the company's Entertainment and Devices division for the last quarter of last year, and in the projected 50 percent rise expected for the current quarter.

By contrast, Sony's new motion-sensing controller for its PlayStation, Move, has sold about three million units through the end of 2010, since its launch in September.

Despite all of the promotional hand-waving that Microsoft did to launch its hands-free game controller, Kinect, the company may have underestimated its appeal. In addition to sales to game players, the Kinect has instigated a cottage industry of radical experimentation by developers that could have a major impact on user interaction with a wide range of non-game devices. With the Kinect, users control the device through in-the-air gestures and motion, as well as voice commands.

One university researcher, for instance, has used the two cameras in the device to gain control of the 3D software and turn the unit into a 3D camera. In Kinect, one of the cameras shoots video, while the other measures depths, resulting in a 640 x 480 video stream and 320 x 240 depth stream.

 TVs, Windows

Others have gotten the Kinect to work with Mac OS X, Windows 7, and Linux computers. Israeli company PrimeSense, which makes the chip controlling motion-sensing in the peripheral, has said that it is licensing its chip for other uses, such as controlling PC functionality in TVs.

After the first experiments, Microsoft had issued a statement that it "does not condone the modification of its products," and that "numerous hardware and software safeguards" are intended to reduce the chances of "product tampering." It later noted that, in fact, Kinect software and hardware were not in fact modified, but only the software in the main device that interacted with the Kinect, and it has since embraced the research.

Michael Gartenberg, Research Director at analyst at the Gartner Group, said "ten million units is impressive and shows that the Kinect is not just a peripheral for the Xbox but is leading to an evolution of the Xbox platform itself."
He added that ten million units "will resonate very, very well" with developers, as will the company's recent release of a software development kit and its current efforts to integrate the technology into an upcoming version of Windows.
The lack of a tablet-optimized operating system essentially killed the user experience. You just can’t cram a stock version of Windows on a device that size and hope people will put up with it.

The Slate was supposed to come with HP’s (formerly Palm’s) WebOS, which can be found on the Palm Pre. But, alas, that dream was not realized.

Now, in a bold move, HP says that all of next year’s offerings will have WebOS alongside Windows. Not just their mobile devices, not just their tablets, but every HP PC will feature WebOS as well.

Why?

What’s the point of putting WebOS on every device?

Well, two reasons. It seems to me that HP wants to get people used to using WebOS. So by shipping it on all of their computers, people will acclimate to the user experience. Then, they’re very likely to buy an HP mobile device powered by WebOS.

There’s another reason.

With WebOS, HP mobile devices, computers and tablets alike will be able to communicate with one another right out of the box. Sound familiar?

If not, you’re not an Apple user.

Apple products are good at talking to one another. They don’t like anyone else very much, but that’s for another column.

By emulating Apple’s approach, HP may be hoping to capture some of the user-friendliness of the iconic brand.

My prediction: They’re doomed to failure. HP might sponsor Formula One racing, but they’re just not very good at marketing otherwise.

Apple, on the other hand, has become one of the most market-savvy companies in the world. And marketing is half the battle.

Source

Space shuttle Discovery landing marks beginning of the end

He was the last of the six crew members to climb out of the shuttle.

Dozens of Nasa officials – flight directors, launch managers, former astronauts – joined the crew on the runway to admire the shuttle and pose for pictures.

"It's a pretty bittersweet moment for all of us," Lindsey said. "As the minutes pass, I'm actually getting sadder and sadder about this being the last flight."

Even after shuttles Endeavour and Atlantis make their final voyages in the coming months, Discovery will still hold the all-time record with 39 missions, 148 million miles (238 million kilometres), 5,830 orbits of Earth, and 365 days spent in space. All that was achieved in under 27 years.

Discovery now leads the way to retirement as Nasa winds down the 30-year shuttle programme in favour of interplanetary travel.

Nasa estimates it will take several months of work – removing the three main engines and draining all hazardous fuels – before Discovery is ready to head to the Smithsonian Institution. It will make the 750m (1,200km) journey strapped to the top of a jumbo jet.

Throughout the flight, Lindsey and his crew marvelled at how well Discovery was performing. They noted that the spacecraft was going into retirement still "at the top of her game".

Discovery's last mission unfolded smoothly despite a four-month grounding for fuel tank repairs and a liftoff on 24 February in the last two seconds of the countdown.

"It came back as perfect on its final flight as it did on its first flight," Lindsey said.

Perhaps more than any other shuttle, Discovery consistently delivered.

It made its debut in 1984 following shuttles Columbia and Challenger, dispatched the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990, flew the first shuttle rendezvous to Russia's Mir space station and carried the first female shuttle pilot in 1995, and gave another ride into space to John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, in 1998.

It got Nasa flying again, in 1988 and 2005, following the Challenger and Columbia disasters. And it flew 13 times to the space station, more than any other craft. On its last trip, it delivered a new storage compartment packed with supplies and a humanoid robot.

"You're sad to see her be retired, but at the same time, it's really a pride thing. We got her back OK. It was a beautiful mission," said Ken Smith, a Boeing propulsion manager who monitored the shuttle's systems from the landing strip.

But he added: "We've got two more to fly."

The Discovery astronauts took several minutes to go through the long receiving line on the runway. Nasa's boss, Charles Bolden, a former shuttle commander who twice flew Discovery, led the welcoming party and called it "an absolutely incredible flight." Earlier in the morning, he joined about 50 local eighth-graders eager to see history in the making.

Bolden will announce the final homes for Endeavour and Atlantis on 12 April – 30 years to the day that Columbia soared on the first shuttle flight.

Nasa planned to move Endeavour out to the launch pad Wednesday night for its 19 April liftoff, but delayed the trip until Thursday because bad weather was expected. The mission will be commanded by Mark Kelly, the husband of Gabrielle Giffords the US congresswoman who was shot and wounded in Arizona. His identical twin brother Scott is currently the skipper of the space station; he returns to Earth next week on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

Atlantis is slated to make its last trip at the end of June.

Nasa is under presidential direction to spread its wings beyond low-Earth orbit. The goal is to send astronauts to an asteroid and then Mars in the decades ahead. There is not enough money for Nasa to achieve that and maintain the shuttle programme at the same time. As a result, the shuttles will stop flying this summer after 30 years.

American astronauts will keep hitching rides to the space station on Russian capsules, until private companies are able to provide a taxi service to and from orbit. Nasa expects to get another nine years out of the space station.

Source

As Competitors Pop up, iPad Keeps Price Advantage

The new iPad model hitting stores Friday comes with several improvements over the original version but the same price tag, hobbling efforts by rivals at breaking Apple Inc.'s hold on the emerging market for tablet computers.

Competitors such as Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. can't seem to match the iPad's starting price of $499. Tablets that are comparable to the iPad in features cost hundreds of dollars more, while cheaper tablets are inferior to the iPad in quality.

Usually, the early products in consumer electronics, such as the first Blu-ray players or digital cameras, are expensive. Competition then gradually brings prices down. With the iPad, the reverse is happening, spelling trouble for competitors.

It's rare for prices to start low and stay low, yet it looks as if that's exactly what Apple intended. Apple appears to have chosen, right from the start, to make less of a profit from its iPads than it does from iPods and iPhones. That's an odd move for a company that isn't known for cheap products.

Apple's profit margin on the $499 entry-level iPad model is about 25 percent, according to an estimate by Toni Sacconaghi at Bernstein Research.

By contrast, the company's profit margin for all products, before corporate overhead, was 38.5 percent in the most recent quarter. He and other analysts estimate the margin for the iPhone 4 is 50 percent to 60 percent. (Apple charges about $600 for it, though it's cheaper in stores because wireless carriers subsidize it.)

Apple is telling investors to expect overall margins to keep declining, meaning competitors can't expect much of a reprieve.

There are cheaper tablet computers available, but they don't perform as well — with poor screens, poor touch sensitivity and poor software, and overall slowness. Archos sells a tablet that's roughly iPad-sized for $370. Reviewers at CNET and Laptop Magazine say its screen washes out unless you're right in front of it, and it has problems sensing touch.

In other words, now is the time to get smart about Google Android security. The following six tips and tricks will help do just that.

1) Protect Your Android with a Password--Now!

The single most effective security measure you can take to protect your Android device is to lock it with a password. It sounds simple, but a strong password--or even a weak one--will protect you and your smartphone from the vast majority of threats; if a malicious party can't get past your password screen, your data and everything else on-device is generally secure.

Depending on the model of your Android smartphone, you'll have a variety of password options, but they're all accessed in mainly the same way. Open up your Android Settings menu and scroll down to the section called Location & Security Settings or something similar. First, enable Screen Unlock Security and you'll then be presented with a number of password options, depending on your device.

For example, my Motorola Atrix 4G provides password options for a Pattern Lock, for which you can set a specific "swipe pattern" to unlock your device; a PIN Lock that uses numbers to secure your handheld; a Password Lock, for which you can employ both letters and numbers; and finally, a biometric-based Fingerprints Lock that employs the Atrix's fingerprint reader for authentication.

Though the Fingerprint Lock is the most secure option...I'm a bit wary of storing my biometric information on Google's servers, so I opt for the Password Lock. In order of "secureness," the Fingerprint Lock is most secure, followed by the Password Lock, PIN Lock and finally, the Pattern Lock. But using any one of these Android password security options is better than not using one at all.

(Note: If you choose to employ the Pattern Lock option, it's a good idea to frequently wipe your touch screen clean, since repeated entry of your pattern lock can leave a "trail" that can be spotted by hackers and used to gain access to your device.)

Android Overtakes BlackBerry As the Top U.S. Smartphone Platform [REPORT]

The trend was obvious for quite some time, and now it finally happened: Android is the most popular smartphone platform among U.S. subscribers.
According to comScore’s data, Google’s Android rose from 23.5% market share in October 2010 to 31.2% in January 2011, enough to securely grab the first place from RIM’s BlackBerry, which fell 35.8% in October 2010 to 30.4% in January 2011.
Apple’s iOS experienced a minute growth in the same period: from 24.6% to 24.7%, while Microsoft and Palm continued losing market share, ending at 8.0% and 3.2%, respectively.
