Sit back and put your feet up - whilst driving up the motorway??!!

Road Trains to take the Strain

Many will remember the Jimmy Saville adverts, this is the age of the train, and let the train take the strain, well now, some clever bods are using wireless technology to create road trains. The lead vehicle would be driven by a professional driver who be responsible for monitoring the status of the road train. Sat-navs would be used to alert drivers to road trains that are on their roads, and covering routes similar those of potential drivers, drivers could then join the road train and simply sit back, put their feet and hands up, whilst the lead vehicle takes control.

A far fetched idea? Not so, trials are already underway in Spain.

The road trains are seen as a step method in shifting the attitudes and pattern of transport use. Many car users take the car because it gives them the door-to-door solution that they need. Public transport systems work well within the major cities in the UK, but once you leave them, even city to city journeys can take on a "planes, trains and automobiles" type nature. Journies using road trains would consist of a before and after stage whilst the driver travelled he necessary miles to join the road train, and then the middle stage where the road train takes over. A unique blend of the best bits of public and private transport.

The road trains could result in fuel savings of vehicles following the lead vehicle up to 20%. Plus other savings harder to quantify, including health and social benefits from more refreshed and relaxed drivers at the end of the journeys and possibilities for more productive use of travelling time.

Would Road trains help the courier and road transport industries? Potentially, yes, Boxby believes there could be huge benefits. Many couriers and lorry drivers prefer to travel at night when the roads are quieter and less congested, however with deliveries that need making during the daytime, this can lead to long working hours, more so for the self employed drivers who still fall outside the terms of the European Working Time directives for mobile workers. Road trains could possibly offer a solution that could cut the time of the long distance journeys substantially, giving drivers the opportunity to sleep and relax whilst their vehicle is still travelling and making progress.

If all goes well, we should be seeing trials on the UKs roads before the end 2012. For more information see the BBC

Belfast Broadway Underpass Builders to foot the Bill

Builders told to foot the bill for major road disruption

Belfasts new Broadway underpass, part of the Westlink, was flooded under feet of water last August when a months worth of rain fell in a matter of hours. The Audit office yesterday ruled that they believe that the developer should fit the bill for the clean up and repair operation, blaming design faults. The contractual requirement was that the road should be able to deal with a "1 in a 100 year flood".

At one point the road was under 6metres of water, and caused major disruption to local businesses, as well as the courier, delivery and haulage industries. Here at Boxby we approve of the idea that the people that build the roads are actually being made liable for the long term performance. So much of couriers and road transport drivers days are occupied by delays as companies continually fix roads, going for the short term quick fix, rather than longer term permanent repairs. For example the M6 toll road being closed for major repairs within months of its opening.

Maybe the NAO decision is driven by the fact that the local councils and the government are already woefully behind with the road repairs, and that the UK's road users are currently seeing some of the worst road conditons and potholes in the UK's history. Maybe if road builders are made to take on responsibility for the long term condition and performance of their roads then we will simply get better roads.

TNT Profits fall

TNT, one of the parties that has expressed and interest in purchasing a stake in the UK's Royal Mail, has seen it's profits fall again for a fifth sucessive quarter.

TNT (owned by Dutch Post) is Europes second largest mail company, saw this quarter results for this year 12% down on sales for the same quarter last year. But do show optimism in the fact that they believe that the parcel and mail industries are starting to stabilise. Quoting one of this years most upbeat views; "The rate of decline has become "sequentially less negative compared to Q2 2009." Straight from Yes, Minster!

TNT also seem to be taking a leaf out of Citylink's book and turning their attention towards costs. This time last year Citylink was definitely the lame duck of the UK courier industry, but a concentrated effort on cutting costs and improving customer service has seen them reduce losses at a rate of £1m a week.

Boxby Couriers I Disagree Strongly

I would be happy to talk to you in more detail when I have time but I could not disagree with this more strongly

This was the reply from Clair Armstrong, co-founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign, she could not disagree with the idea of speed limiters more strongly. Clair didn't go into any details why, but i hope that she will some time soon when Claire can spare the time.

This is some more Emails that we have received.

1.Why can't we voluntary fit the speed limiter to our vehicles.

2.This is a great idea, if it can stop the idiot that drive past my children's school at 40, 50, 60, mph, then I'm all for it, good luck.

3.Would the Government be able to track our every move with this.

Boxby Couriers Says Keep Them Coming Please

Couriers and public have some concerns about the speed limiter

Boxby has had lots of question about the speed limiter from drivers that live in London. This is a short list of the question that was asked,

1. They want to know how the limiter would affect their normal working day, and would it help them with traveling times.

2. Will it help reduce congestion.

3. How many people will it save each year from traffic accidents.

4. What benefits would London drivers get from using the limiter, and would their be any side effects.

Just keep them coming please.

Thanks Boxby It's A Great Idea Says the public

Boxby has had a over whelming response to the idea of speed limiters

The majority of the drivers would have no problem with the new technology being fitted to their vehicles, even if it added a little cost to the price of a new car. One driver said if it would reduce death and injury on the roads, it would be worth every penny it cost.

Lots of drivers made the same point that drivers are ment to drive at the speed limit anyway, and the limiter idea does not really change anything besides the time to time we all forget to slow down and end up with a speeding fine and points on our license.

The other benefit is that it should help to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions hopefully, and that has to be good for us all.

I still need as many comments as possible please.

Royal Mail Round Two Starts on Monday 26th October

Can Royal Mail, TUC, and Lord Mandelson break the deadlock

A further three strike days are planned from Thursday, in the dispute over pay, conditions and modernisation. With estimated amounts of between 35 million and 90 million items that need to be delivered before the next round of strikes, some kind of agreement needs to be on the table. With three further walkouts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, business continue to look to alternative parcel delivery companies like Boxby and Parcelsplease to ensure that their customers continue to receive their orders on time.

Is ParcelForce Going To Strike In Sympathy

Will parcelforce go on strike in sympathy with royal mail

If Parcelforce where to go on strike in sympathy of their sister company Royal Mail, it would send total chaos throughout their postal delivery services and would cost the UK Billion of pounds. It would almost be certain that lots of workers would loose their jobs, and the government would restrict the monopoly that both the parcelforce and Royal Mail have. It's more likely that companies and the public would look for alternative services like Boxby couriers and Parcelsplease.

Boxby Couriers Say Big Thanks To The Royal Mail For Striking

Boxby has had 30% more inquiries today than yesterday thanks to royal mail

Thanks to royal mail strike today, Boxby couriers and Parcelsplease have been inundated with new enquiries for deliveries of large and small Parcel items for all over the UK. Some of the enquiries are from large companies that send between 100 and 500 parcel a week. "This is bad news for the royal mail and good news for Boxby and we intend to provide a good service to keep all our new customers happy, so when the strikes are called off they stay with us" said Alistair Patterson from Boxby.
