Bruno tells Haye to KO Klitschko

2011-06-16T21:23:00.001+01:00

Haye goes away from home to put up his WBA crown against the Ukrainian’s WBO, IBF and IBO titles in front of what will be a pro-Klitschko crowd in Hamburg, Germany on July 2.

If ‘the Hayemaker’ does the business, Wladimir’s older Vitali, the WBC title holder, will be the only one left to dispute that Haye is the king of the heavyweight division.

Amir Khan's Fight Against Zab Judah Refused By Sky TV

2011-06-09T21:15:00.002+01:00

Amir Khan tonight revealed his rift with Sky TV continues after the broadcaster rejected the opportunity to screen his unification bout with Zab Judah.

Khan will defend his WBA light-welterweight title against Judah, the IBF champion, at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Center on July 23.

Primetime have secured the UK rights to the contest in their second partnership with Khan after screening his victory over Paul McCloskey in April.

Sky downgraded the McCloskey fight from Box Office to Sky Sports 3 following a poor response to pay-per-view sales, prompting Khan's team to switch allegiance to the far smaller Primetime.

David Haye sparring David Price in run up to Klitschko bout

2011-06-06T17:46:00.003+01:00

Ask any boxer to name the single most important part of training camp and I'd imagine most of them would pinpoint sparring as number one. Sparring helps us fighters improve timing and reactions, as well as familiarise ourselves with sensations and certain strategies we will try to implement on the night of the fight. It is also important to reach an ideal balance between doing too much sparring and not enough.

If you find yourself doing too much sparring, the likelihood is you'll either be fatigued by the time of the fight or you will peak too soon. Whenever you hear a fighter talk about 'leaving it in the gym' after a loss, it usually means they overtrained and perhaps did too much sparring. On the flip-side, if you choose to do very little sparring, don't complain to me if your timing is a little off come fight time.

‘Dazzling’ Darren Barker will make the first defence of his European Middleweight title in Brentwood, Essex on July 23 – the home of the BAFTA winning TV show The Only Way Is Essex.

Barker claimed the belt for the second time with a fine performance against tough Italian Domenico Spada at London’s Olympia on April 30 and will defend that title and his unbeaten record in Essex live on Sky Sports against a top ranked European opponent, to be named soon.

Amir Khan will defend WBA title against Zab Judah

2011-06-02T18:51:00.001+01:00

Amir Khan's next defence of his WBA light-welterweight title will be against IBF champion Zab Judah in Las Vegas on 23 July.

The 24-year-old British fighter, who beat Paul McCloskey in April, had been linked with fights against Timothy Bradley or Erik Morales.

Khan confirmed the fight on Twitter, writing: "July 23, WBA/IBF unification fight. KHAN vs JUDAH. Mandalay Bay."

Judah, 33, reclaimed the IBF title against Kaizer Mabuza in March.

Writing on his own Twitter page, Judah said he was confident he could win the sixth world title of his career.

"Who coming to Vegas on July 23 to see me become 6x Champion of the World!!!," he tweeted.

His career includes victories over Junior Witter and Cory Spinks, while he has lost to the likes of Carlos Baldomir, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Miguel Cotto.

Hard hitting Billy Joe Saunders wins in two rounds at the 02

2011-05-25T16:47:00.003+01:00

It took just one and a half rounds for Billy Joe Saunders to register his ninth professional victory as he impressively dispatched Kevin Hammond in front of a capacity crowd and Sky Box Office cameras at the 02 Arena on Saturday night.

VICTORIOUS: Billy Joe Saunders celebrates at the 02

The 21-year-old, who lives on a travellers' site near Essendon, was the first fight on the undercard of the Nathan Cleverly/James DeGale bill, promoted by Frank Warren, and he proved a popular winner with the crowd as the referee was forced to stop the fight midway through the second round.

Hammond, whose last five fights - all defeats - had gone the distance, provided little by way of resistance from the opening bell, but that was all credit to Saunders who showed few signs of rustiness despite only having last fought in April.

Matthew Macklin set for World title shot

2011-05-20T22:29:00.001+01:00

Macklin (onthe left) is fighting for a world title
for the first time in his 30-fight career

Birmingham middleweight Matthew Macklin says he has no doubts that he will be crowned World Champion when he takes on Felix Sturm in Germany on 25 June.

Two-time European champion Macklin, 29, meets WBA holder Sturm in Cologne in front of 20,000 fans.

"I'm going to win, there is no doubt in my mind about that," Macklin said.

"Felix is a great technician, he has been a great champion but this is my time and my strength and power will be decisive in winning the fight."

Macklin, with 28 wins from 30 fights, has risen up the rankings since becoming British Champion in March 2009 when he knocked out Wayne Elcock and beat Amin Asikainen to win the European title six months later.

After vacating the European belt, Macklin saw hugely-anticipated fights with Darren Barker and veteran American Ronald 'Winky' Wright cancelled when they both suffered injuries.

Macklin himself pulled out of a world-title eliminator against Khoren Gevor in April 2011 and now has a direct shot at Sturm.

"There's just over five weeks left now and my preparations could not be going any better," he said.

"I was already very excited about the fight and coming face to face with Felix has only made me more confident that I will be taking that belt home next month."

Sturm, 32, first won the WBA title in March 2006 but lost it in his first defence against Javier Castillejo.

After winning a rematch a year later, Sturm has remained undefeated but the German has a healthy respect for Macklin.

"He's an outstanding challenger. He has earned his chance and is one of the five best middleweights in the world.

"It will be a war but I will be ready for anything and I will do whatever it takes to keep my title," Sturm said.

Young Mutley and Frankie Gavin square up

2011-05-20T22:15:00.001+01:00

West Bromwich’s Young Mutley and Birmingham’s Frankie Gavin today set the scene in the Black Country
for their all-West Midlands super-fight next week.

The two welterweight rivals came head-to-head at a press conference at the Bellagio Ristorante Italiano on Seagar Street in West Bromwich.

Mutley and Gavin will square off for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental title over 12 rounds on the big Sky Box Office bill at London’s 02 Arena next Saturday night.

Britain’s only world amateur title winner meets the Black Country’s former British champion and Mutley – real name Lee Woodley – promises it will be explosive.

He said: “It’s going to be good fight, I am fit and ready to go. Hopefully I can bring that belt back to West Bromwich.

“Gavin won’t know what hit him.”

But Gavin, undefeated as a pro, doesn’t think his record is in danger.

He said: “I am going to win, I am really fit and as strong as I ever felt. I am not sure he’s even going to hit me, never mind knock me out.”

Also at the 02, West Bromwich’s Marcus Portman takes on undefeated Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jamie Cox in a light middleweight eight-rounder.

Portman said: “He’s an aggressive lad with a good record, but I have the experience to get the job done.”

Cox added: “I am looking forward to it, it’s a live opponent and a big fight.”

Cleverly won't be fighting Bellew tomorrow night

2011-05-20T21:56:00.001+01:00

Tony Bellew was last night ruled out of fighting Nathan Cleverly for the WBO world light-heavyweight title tomorrow after failing a check weigh-in.

After announcing at a heated press conference that Bellew would face British rival Cleverly for the title, the British Boxing Board of Control then KO'd the grudge match from happening because of weight issues.

The board would not sanction the clash for the WBO belt as the Liverpool boxer was too heavy and so Cleverly will instead face Poland's Aleksy Kuziemski for the world crown.

Commonwealth champion Bellew, 28, had been drafted in to replace Juergen Braehmer - the German who was yesterday stripped of the WBO belt for pulling out of facing Cleverly after claiming he had been cut in sparring.

Unbeaten Welshman Cleverly, 24, was made WBO champion without throwing a punch because he held the interim title and was then told he would be facing British rival Bellew in a first defence. But a third opponent had to be drafted in last night for Cleverly, who will now face Kuziemski at the O2 Arena in London.

Earlier, Cleverly and Bellew nearly got their fight started early as they had to be separated at a press conference.

Promoter Frank Warren said: "I'm disappointed at what's happened and gutted for the fans."

Kuziemski, at No.11, is three places higher in the rankings than Bellew.

British super-middleweight champion James DeGale yesterday challenged rival George Groves to a £320,000 winner-takes-all bet but the board stopped it from happening.

The 2008 Olympic gold medallist, who will fight Groves tomorrow, told his opponent: "I will cover your wage. The bet is that I will beat you."

The Londoners shook on it but Groves' trainer Adam Booth later checked with British bosses who ruled out the wager.

George Groves accepts 400k bet from James DeGale

2011-05-19T15:43:00.002+01:00

The winner takes all when James DeGale and George Groves fight on Saturday night at the O2 Arena. The pair clash for the British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles.

And whoever emerges victorious will get the loser's purse after an extraordinary side bet at today's head to head press conference.

DeGale offered Groves the bet, which he duly accepted.

Frank Warren's purse bid for the fight was just short of £400,000, with DeGale taking the greater share as champion.

"The drinks are on me," said a jubiliant DeGale.

Chunk's trainer Jim McDonnell then offered his opposite number Adam Booth a £20,000 side bet which he too seemed to agree on.

"Groves is getting knocked out," said DeGale. "He's been knocked out in sparring and he's getting knocked out in the ring on Saturday."

But Groves hit back by saying: "I've had enough of DeGale's talking. Now it's time to shut him up once and for all."

Nathan Cleverly title fight called off

2011-05-18T20:22:00.002+01:00

Nathan Cleverly is unbeaten in 21 fights

Nathan Cleverly's challenge for the WBO light-heavyweight title has been called off after the champion Juergen Braehmer suffered an eye injury in training.

Braehmer, 32, was due to face Cleverly, 24, at London's 02 Arena this Saturday, but a cut eye suffered in training on 8 May has failed to heal.

The German won the WBO belt in 2009 and has only made one defence but could and should now be stripped of his title.

If so, Cleverly the interim champion, will be awarded the title by default.

Cleverly, who won the interim title in December after beating Nadjib Mohammedi on points, is unbeaten in 21 fights and was disappointed to see the fight called off.

"I'm majorly disappointed," Cleverly told BBC Sport.

"I had the call this morning saying Braehmer had not turned up at the airport.

"I was really disappointed but I'm not really that surprised. I had a feeling he would do this and I don't think it was a fight he really wanted.

"I made myself mandatory challenger so he had to fight me but basically he didn't want to fight me. He had no option other than to not turn up. He is going to be stripped of his title and I am going to be fighting for the belt.

"I'm just going to have to re-focus and get on with business now. I believe I will be fighting for the world title on Saturday now and that is motivation in itself.

"Ideally I would have liked to have beaten Braehmer, which I'm sure I would have done. This is the guy I wanted for ages, and I've been preparing for him for months. But what can you do? He hasn't turned up and he will be stripped.

"As long as I become world champion I'll still have the same amount of satisfaction.

"It's not easy to prepare for a change of opponent. I've been preparing for Braehmer who is a southpaw but this is boxing and this is what happens.

"I've got to make sure I'm motivated and re-focused on the fight.

"It's not an ideal situation but I'll get on with business, clear my head and be ready to fight and win on Saturday."

The 02 Arena card will still go ahead, with the joint headline fight between British super-middleweight champion James DeGale and fierce rival George Groves the bigger draw anyway. It is still hoped that unbeaten Welshman Cleverly will fight on Saturday but his opponent is unknown.

Any fight for Cleverly on Saturday could be the first defence of his title with his promoter Frank Warren saying he expects the Welshman to be awarded the WBO belt.

Braehmer last fought in April 2010 and has 29 knockouts from 36 wins with two defeats.

Since that last fight the 32-year-old was involved in a long-running court case that could have seen him jailed for 16 months for assault and insulting behaviour.

But Braehmer was cleared this year following an appeal meaning the German kept his WBO title.

His stock is already low due having only defended his belt once since winning it in 2009 while also pulling out of a January unification fight with Beibut Shumenov.

Cleverly's father and trainer Vince led the calls for Braehmer to be stripped of his title but maintained the Cefn Forest fighter would still be well prepared for any fight on Saturday.

"We will offer no excuses and Nathan will be ready to fight," he added.

James DeGale wants a Carl Froch showdown within year

2011-05-17T15:52:00.003+01:00

James DeGale has made an impressive start to life as a pro,
winning the British title in just his ninth fight

James DeGale is targeting an all-British battle against WBC super-middleweight champion Carl Froch within the next year.

If DeGale gets the better of George Groves in their clash for the British and Commonwealth straps this Saturday, he will be hammering on the door of a world title shot. DeGale's promoter, Frank Warren, has already confirmed that there is a world champion in the division who is willing to fight his man.

Now DeGale has put a time-frame on his step up to the highest level by responding to Froch, who said on Monday that he expected to face DeGale - or Groves, if he can cause an upset - sooner or later.

"For him to mention my name is great," DeGale told Sky Sports. "I just want the big fights - you never know what Frank Warren has up his sleeve. A world title might be around the corner. Next year, 18 months time, me against Carl Froch would be a fantastic domestic fight."

Froch is currently tied up with the Super Six tournament, which will crown a unified super-middleweight champion. He fights Glen Johnson on June 4 for the right to take on Andre Ward, the WBA king.

Nathan Cleverly is delighted that he's now well and truly on Carl Froch's radar, but won't let that distract him in the quest for world-title glory on Saturday night.

Cleverly has vowed to impress in his WBO light-heavyweight title challenge against champion Juergen Braehmer at The O2 in London (live on Sky Box Office).

The unbeaten Welshman says it could lead to a huge domestic dust-up with WBC world super-middleweight king Froch, who has talked about moving up to 175lbs.

This week Froch said a fight against Cleverly could become inevitable if both fighters carry on winning.

"I've got nothing but respect for Froch and that would be a cracking fight down the line," said Cleverly.

"If Froch does intend to come up to light-heavyweight, then who better to fight than me with a world title on the line?

"I've got to get a big win on the world stage first, and it won't come much bigger than Braehmer.

"He's the only thing that I'm focused on at the moment, and I'm not taking my eye off the ball this Saturday because a win is crucial.

"First I've got to deal with Braehmer in style on Saturday night, then not only will Froch take me seriously, but so will the Americans.

"This is my chance to put myself in the spotlight and I intend to take it."
