Hartz Victims - Gauge Update!

We recieved an email from Gauge's parents thanking us for profiling Gauge on our blog and letting people know about how Hartz hurts. In June, it had been 11 months since Gauge was hurt by Hartz. Her parents report that while she is happy and has adjusted to her scars she still has some neurological effects.

We were extremely happy to be a part of the public meeting on Sunday. A big thank you to our friend, Nicole, who made it all happen! The event was very well attended event and was eye-opening for the attendees. Many people visited our information table and we gave out a bunch of Boycott Monster Pets flyers and other information.
In case you weren't able to attend Sunday's meeting, here are some ways you can take action to help Pennsylvania's dogs from the PA Dog Law Action site:

What can you do to help? Contact your legislator by phone, letter, or email and let them know you support the overhaul of Pennsylvania's Dog Law!
Not sure who your legislator is? Visit their website: use the member search option in the top right corner to find your legislator or call us at: 717-772-2854 and we'll help you find out.
Write a letter to the editor. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper, telling them you support the overhaul of Pennsylvania's Dog Law. Find a local paper
Attend the rally
Bring your dog on Tuesday, Sept. 16 in the Soldier's Grove outside the Capitol Complex in Harrisburg from Noon to 2 p.m. Show your support for legislation to overhaul Pennsylvania's Dog Law.

If you're interested in attending the rally, email us for more information and possible car pooling opportunities.

While our group supports any positive changes on behalf of dogs in puppy mills, we believe these changes are still not enough. Puppy mills should be shut down all together. Until that happens by law, consumers need to work towards it by boycotting stores and breeders that sell puppies.

July 4th Fireworks Are No Blast For Pets

Returning home from a holiday celebration, Sharon Moore and her family discovered feces on their living room floor.
The sliding glass door to their backyard was open, and a hole had been dug under their fence.
The Moores were gone for only four hours, but D.O.G., their 2-year-old, aptly-named white German Shepherd, was gone. Left on her own to face the tumult of fireworks and loud celebrations, she escaped, apparently to seek the familiar—her family—even if she had no idea where to look.
"From what we can tell, when D.O.G. heard the fireworks she freaked out and pooped on the floor inside—for the first time ever—then she opened the sliding glass door with her paw, and dug a hole outside our fence.... She went searching for us," said Moore, of Maitland, Fla.
The Moores' search for D.O.G. ended when she was found dead alongside a road where she was often walked.

No Celebration

Moore believes that D.O.G., who wasn't normally scared of thunder or other loud noises, panicked from the cumulative effects of the fireworks, the excited voices outside, and being left alone inside the house.

The Moores' tragic loss isn't unique. Pets often become frightened and frantic by the noise and commotion of Independence Day. In fact, animal shelters across the country are accustomed to receiving "July 4th" dogs—dogs who run off during fireworks celebrations and are rescued by animal control officers or good samaritans who take them to the safety of a local shelter.

Leave Them At Home
Fortunately, preventing pet problems on Independence Day is possible by simply planning ahead and taking some basic precautions.
"With a little bit of planning and forethought, you can enjoy the excitement of the Fourth of July and know that your animal companion is safe, sound, and enjoying a little peace and quiet," said Nancy Peterson, an issues specialist with The Humane Society if the United States.

To protect your pet on the Fourth of July, take these precautions:

Resist the urge to take your pet to fireworks displays.
Do not leave your pet in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects—even death—in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but they do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen.
Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you've removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company while you're attending Fourth of July picnics, parades, and other celebrations.
If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.
Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.
Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

At our demo on Saturday we were approached by two people who are interested in bringing new companion dogs into their lives. One man was interested in a Chihuahua, the other man has his heart set on an English Bulldog. We are so happy to announce that these two compassionate individuals are no longer interested in buying dogs from Monster Pets, and when they are really ready for a new family member they will be choosing the adoption route instead.

Yesterday our demo went very well. We had at least five people stop to ask us what a puppy mill is. It's very surprising to us that some people still don't know about puppy mills, but it reassures us that we are doing the right thing by educating people. Many people were out and about enjoying the first real taste of summer, so we managed to hand out a lot flyers and get a bunch of supportive honks and thumbs up. Quite a few people turned around to shop elsewhere (find a list of alternative stores on our main website). After reading our signs, two cars even turned around before they got to the driveway! As one woman was pulling in to visit one of the other stores in the center, she stopped to tell us that she doesn't shop at Monster Pets anymore because of what she learned from our presence. She told us to, "keep up the great work!"

Please consider joining us one of these Saturdays. Any amount of time you can contribute WILL help animals!

Q: What's the big deal if I buy a dog bed at Monster Pets just this one time?

A: We understand that it may be a bit less convenient to buy your supplies from stores that don't sell animals, but it is so important that you make that choice. Every time someone decides to shop at Monster Pets, that person is letting Monster Pets think that the public doesn't care if they sell puppy mill puppies. There are two ways to let a store know you do not agree with their business practices, the second being more effective than the first: 1. Tell them 2. Don't shop there - when they start bringing in less money they will start to understand that the public does not condone selling puppies from abusive facilities.

We've started this blog as a way to give updated information about the campaign and to share anything interesting that we come across. The campaign started in January 2007 and continues to this day because, unfortunately, Monster Pets continues to sell puppy mill puppies.

Dear Mr. Fennell and Mr. Zornes,

Once again, I would like to thank Mr. Fennell for meeting with me in the beginning of this year. During our meeting, Mr. Fennell stated that Monster Pets buys puppies from Hunte Corporation. Our research indicates that Hunte Corporation purchases puppies from "high-volume breeders" which are also known as puppy mills. However, sources from Monster Pets, such as Susan Hoagland, have claimed that none of Monster Pets' puppies come from puppy mills. If you are purchasing animals from a company that is known to source animals from puppy mills, how can you claim to know where your puppies originate, and that none of them are from puppy mills? In order to address this contradiction, please provide us with the names and addresses of the breeder sources of the puppies sold at Monster Pets.
As you know, since we spoke earlier this year, millions of animals have been killed in U.S. shelters because of lack of homes. Every community in the country kills homeless animals. Knowing this lethal situation, it is reprehensible for any store to sell animals. Therefore, Reach Out for Animal Rights (ROAR) continues to respectfully request that you stop selling puppies. We will continue to peacefully leaflet and urge customers to adopt and not buy until you stop the business of selling intentionally-bred animals. As you well know, our approach of outreach is neither frightening nor intimidating, as hours of videotaped footage proves.
The majority of reputable rescue organizations will not work with stores that sell puppies. If Monster Pets stops the sale of puppies and other animals, ROAR would be happy to assist you in forming positive relationships with animal rescue organizations in the community. Dear Mr. Fennell and Mr. Zornes,

This is to follow up on our letter of December 28, 2007 and our request for the breeder sources of Monster Pets’ puppies.
Monster Pets repeatedly purports to sell healthy puppies from quality breeders. Among other things, Susan Hoagland, self-proclaimed Monster Pets’ representative, has stated, “a healthy happy playful puppy comes from a happy, healthy parent. It's a proven fact and we haven't had a sick, unhappy, unplayful puppy.” However, as Mr. Fennell stated during our meeting early last year, Monster Pets purchases puppies from Hunte Corporation, one of the largest puppy brokers in the nation. Hunte is known to purchase puppies from “high-volume breeders” or puppy mills, many with multiple U.S.D.A. Animal Welfare Act violations. Our reasonable request for breeder records backing up your claims should be eagerly fulfilled if in fact your puppies are from breeders you are proud to support. Please send these records to us at the address below at your earliest convenience.
On a different note, I am deeply concerned about defamatory allegations about my group and me made by Susan Hoagland, spokesperson for Monster Pets. For example, Ms. Hoagland has stated that Reach Out for Animal Rights (ROAR) and I intimidate customers and frighten children. We take great offense to these allegations. Our outreach efforts are peaceful and we stand far from Monster Pets’ doors as to not impede any person’s right to shop at your establishment. ROAR has even begun handing out child friendly pro-adoption activity pages. Our peaceful presence and professional manner are issues that we take very seriously. I am requesting that Monster Pets and anyone writing on your behalf stop all libelous allegations against my group or me.
ROAR’s offer to meet with you to discuss these or other issues still remains. I would appreciate your response as soon as possible. Please mail to Reach Out for Animal Rights, P.O. Box 338, Westville, NJ 08093.
