When someone calls and says, “I’d like you to shoot my two year old,” We can respond with complete honesty when we say, “I understand. We all have those days… How about we photograph him instead?”

Just as it is a challenging age to parent, it’s a tricky age to work with from the perspective of a photographer. Combine fearless curiosity with massive amounts of energy, budding independence and the attention span of a gnat, and you have a recipe for total unpredictability.

What you get is often a child who refuses to take any sort of direction, has no interest in sitting still and has far better things in mind than whatever it is *you’d* like him to be doing at the moment. Bribery can help, though it is usually short-lived, which leaves you with one option: let the child lead.

At this age, we like to take them to a great park with plenty to explore. Let them run, climb, dig and tell us all about their discoveries. We capture who they are in that moment.

A two year old is not a clean and proper, well-behaved little puppet. He is a lively and mischievous breed and in this particular case, ALL boy!

We’ve known Kendall since before she was old enough to buy a lotto ticket. Now she’s all grown up and when we found out that she and Michael were planning their wedding, we were honored that they wanted Boyer Photography to be the photographer for their special day.

Michael and Kendall’s story is similar to one we have heard many times lately. They knew each other in high school, but weren’t romantically involved. Life took them separate ways only to bring them back together again, only this time, it was love!

Family and friends gathered for this Saturday afternoon ceremony, atop the cliffs of the Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego. The gorgeous views and beautiful skies made for a perfect day for celebrating the joining of two hearts in marriage.

Congratulations Michael and Kendall! We couldn’t be happier for you two. Best wishes for a long, happy life together!

Thomas was actually due a few weeks after our son, Jeremiah, but he was born several weeks early and Jeremiah arrived over two weeks late. We teased his mom in the hospital that it would be funny one day to explain to our boys that Thomas wasn’t actually older, he was just born first!

Thomas and his mom came up from San Diego to Oceanside this past weekend for a quick mini-session at the park. He is an adorable boy, equal parts charm and mischief! Thomas loves to explore and is a joy to work with as a photographer. We hope that we get to photograph him again very soon!

Chris was the best man at our wedding nearly 10 years ago. He and Jason had worked together at their first dot com jobs, during the big internet boom, so when we got engaged, Jason knew he wanted Chris at his side as we said “I do!” Now, it’s our pleasure to be a part of Chris’s wedding plans, as he prepares to marry his sweetheart, Kim.

Chris and Kim are a really active couple; they hike and camp and generally love the outdoors. Of course, living in San Diego, they get to enjoy nature all year round, so they knew of the perfect place for their engagement portraits. They led the way from Oceanside to a fantastic hiking area in the Torrey Pines area of La Jolla. We had never been there before, and found the views breathtaking, even on an overcast day.

We always enjoy spending time with Chris and Kim, and this engagement portrait session was no different. As a photographer, most every shoot is wonderful, but there is something extra special about getting to take photos of the people you have chosen as friends. We’re so excited for you two as you count down to your big day!

Ruby went to high school with Jason, so it was a bit of a blast from the past when she contacted us a while back to do a couple’s portrait session in San Diego. During their photo shoot, Jason really enjoyed working with them and remarked that he’d love to do their engagement photography when the time comes. Ruby playfully elbowed at Jack as though to say, “Yeah, you should get on that!” So you can imagine our surprise when we got a last-minute request to shoot their Carlsbad beach wedding just six months later!

We’re huge fans of short engagements. Our own engagement was only two short months and it was great to not have to stress over wedding preparations for six months to a year! Sometimes you just *know* that you want to spend your life with someone and don’t want to wait any longer than necessary to call them your husband or wife.

Many congratulations, Jack and Ruby, on finding the one who brings you joy and making it official. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of capturing the memories from your special day!

Some days it would be a crime to stay indoors. This Sunday in San Diego was just such a day. Of course, lovely weather also brings about a perfect opportunity for outdoor family photography! We invited some friends to meet us at one of our favorite Oceanside parks for some playtime and a casual portrait session for the kids. A great time was had by all and we captured some adorable photos of the children too. Who says work can’t be fun?

At just 3 months old, little Matthew has a lot of growing to do and wanted to spend the whole day eating and sleeping in order to fuel that growth. This meant he wasn’t keen on posing for portraits, but Jason did manage to snap a few of pictures for the family to commemorate this special time in their lives, when John and Kerri went from being a couple to having a family.

For days leading up to this wedding, we watched the weather reports closely. The forecast bounced back and forth from heavy rains to no rain at all, and a myriad of predictions somewhere in the middle. The ceremony was to be held outdoors, on a grassy area overlooking the beach in La Jolla and with no options to move the wedding date, time or location, the wedding would go on as planned rain or shine! On the drive from Oceanside, we encountered a few heavy downpours and wondered what the ceremony location and time would have in store for us.

The bride had a great attitude about it all. She was cheerful and excited and ready to be married! She looked fabulous and took the rain issue in stride, walking down the aisle with an umbrella to shield her from the sprinkling that was coming down.

The couple exchanged vows and rings and shared communion in a short, but beautiful ceremony. They followed that up with a bit of cake and pictures with all of their friends and family.

Because of the wet grass and mud encountered during and immediately following the ceremony, we had no problems getting this lovely couple down onto the beach. When the dress has been through the rain and dirt, what’s a little sand gonna hurt?

This was a first for us, as we have never photographed an event in the rain. But it was a fun new challenge that we embraced. The bride’s joy reminded us all of one very important thing that applies not just to weddings and special events, but to every day: You can let your happiness be dictated by circumstances or choose to be happy in spite of them.

Angela has worked with Boyer Photography before in developing her modeling portfolio and she loved the services we provided to her. So when she got engaged, she approached us to see if we could do an engagement photo session with her and her fiancé. The first date they had booked with us ended up with a storm approaching, and since they wanted outdoor portraits on a non-rainy day, we quickly rescheduled for a few days later when they would be available again.

Since we are all located in the northern part of San Diego, we met up with them in Carlsbad for a bit of casual fun, where an alley, a sidewalk cafe and a British-style telephone booth made for interesting places to stop for photos.

Next, we all drove down to La Jolla for the last part of our shoot. The tides were rushing in and the sun was setting, so we had limited time to make use of the beach and take advantage of the fabulous skies.

This couple had a uniquely passionate vibe, so we capitalized on that and got some beautifully intimate photos of them. The funny thing about photographing sexy-type moments though, is that there were times when it felt like we were interrupting something! *giggle*

In the end, we all agreed that postponing the shoot had been worth the wait, especially since we were all thrilled to get a gorgeous San Diego sunset to use as a backdrop for the beach portion of their session.

Thank you, Jordan and Angela, for choosing Boyer Photography to do your engagement pictures. We had a great time and look forward to working with you again in the future!

This couple booked us to photograph their March wedding, but because they found us late in their search for a photographer, they hadn’t planned on having the time for an engagement portrait shoot. Since we love to get to know our clients before the “big day,” we encouraged them to spend an afternoon with us at Balboa Park in San Diego for some pre-wedding photos. Despite it being a holiday, we weren’t headed to the zoo or museums, and that’s where the crowds would be, so that left the areas we wanted to go with very little foot traffic.

These two love to play and truly enjoy each other’s company, so we set out to capture the fun that they have together. We aimed to get a mix of a traditional type shots (you know… the portraits that mom and grandma will want) alongside a variety of modern casual photos. Of course, the photography part is easy when you have great subjects! We simply followed them with camera and lighting and let them be who they are. The resulting shots were everything we had hoped they would be.

The best part though? …was getting an email after the photo session thanking us for making the shoot so much fun. Really guys, YOU are what made it such fun. We had a great time and are looking forward to photographing your wedding in a few weeks!
