Transplanting Snapdragon Seedlings

What a beautiful March we have had! Many of us were able to work in the yard, do some spring clean up and even some planting. Did anyone get their peas planted on St. Patrick’s Day?

Transplanting Snapdragon Seedlings - Whose hands are these?

But don’t let the warm weather fool you! After a week of record warmth we have had freeze warnings this week. Our frost free target date is still May 15th with a 10% chance of frost until Memorial Day. It’s OK to plant trees, shrubs and perennials now as long as they were grown outside or cool and from our zone (zone 5) or colder. Onion, lettuce, radishes, spinach and peas can also be sown in your garden. Remember do not work or plant in the garden if soil is still wet. Wet soil will compact easily and plants will not grow well. If you can squeeze the soil and it stays clumped it is too wet. When dry, soil should crumble.

Talking about planting…we are transplanting peppers, eggplant and tomatoes this week. Next week we will transplant coleus, impatiens, petunias and cosmos. With warm weather the seeds germinated quickly and there are a lot of seedlings ready to plant.

Sure Signs of Spring

March came in a like a lamb – hopefully will go out the same way.
Our bulk vegetable seeds are in, as well as all our seed starting supplies. Speaking of seedlings, the seeds that Mike has sown are growing like crazy. We will be transplanting cold crops like cabbage, broccoli, Kohlrabi and Brussels sprouts this week. Next week we will really have to get our fingers moving as the marigolds, dahlias, and snaps will need to be transplanted.

Our pansies are in full bloom, all their happy faces in a variety of colors. We also will be taking another round of geranium cuttings next week and moving out stock plants to a different greenhouse to finish out. We have most of our Proven Winners flowers planted and about 6,000 hanging baskets planted.

New spring merchandise and garden accessories are arriving daily. Mary has the Gift Shoppe looking awesome! You have to see our new plant stands that look like a water faucet, and new mosaic gazing balls and stands, as well as our new bird and flower garden flags.

At the farm the nursery is full. We had another little female calf (heifer) born Wednesday night. (Or the early hours of Thursday morning) Clayton was on midwife duty that night and luckily it was an easy birth.

We saw some of the first signs of spring outside, the snowdrops are up and blooming, crocus, and spring beauties. The harbingers of spring; the Red-Winged Blackbirds are back and singing loudly. All of the bird songs are being sung louder everyday! Blue birds are choosing nesting sites, and there have been many Baltimore Oriole Sightings. That really means spring is defiantly here…..

2012 is starting out in full swing at Boyerts. A Common question we get is “What’s happens at Boyerts in January and February?” The answer to that question is, All Kinds of exciting things! One of my favorite things about this time of year is calving season at the farm. As of today we have 4 bull calves and 1 heifer calf born, and seventeen more little one on the way. Our Nubian goat LaVerne had twin girls we named Mary and Kate. All of the babies are doing well.

Winter is also the time we do all of our ordering and planning for the year. From the gift shop items, Christmas and fall materials as well as garden center supplies, pottery, soils, mulches, and seeds for both production and retail. We use this time to do educational and training seminars for the greenhouse and garden center. We also look for some highly motivated garden loving individuals to join our team for the spring season. In the greenhouse we just finished our second set of geranium cuttings, and planted our first set in 4.5” pots for spring sales. We seeded some early tomatoes, peppers, and an early crop of lettuce. In December we planted our Fuchsia hanging baskets. The 550 hanging basket ferns we planted in September are coming along nicely. Pansies are just starting to fill out their pots and a few buds are popping up. Spring is on the Way!

Cheerful Pansies Brighten Winter Days

This week we will be planting our wave petunia and ivy geranium hanging baskets, spikes, asparagus fern, vinca vine, pentas, and millet. By the third week of February we will be in full swing planting as fast as our fingers will let us. Stop by for a breath of spring, the scent of warm soil, and some winter blues therapy. Who needs to go to Florida?

Fall Asters & Mums Bursting with Color!

Fall is just around the corner. Although this summer's hot weather caused a delay in flowering, the mum crop has now started to bloom! Our potted sunflowers and Rudbeckias are also starting to bloom. We planted our winter pansies a few weeks ago and they will be ready for you to purchase in a few weeks.

Our fern starts for next year's hanging baskets will arrive this week. Started now, they will be awesome by spring 2012. In a few weeks our geranium cuttings will come in. These will be our stock to take cuttings from all winter. From 1100 stock plants we will produce 10,000 four-inch potted geraniums.

At the farm we are busy getting ready for the hayride season. Everything is cleaned and scrubbed, painted and mended. We will be making new scarecrows for the hayride path and decorating the barns.

The pumpkin crop looks good, though more rain would help the pumpkins grow a bit bigger.

Fifty one-day-old turkeys arrived at the post office last week, and are already making themselves at home. They should weigh
between 18 and 24 pounds by Thanksgiving. Nothing beats a home-raised turkey, so call to order yours today!

All We Need is Sun

Finally, a few days without rain! It’s been a challenge to grow this spring. With so many cloudy days we really had to watch the watering and fertilizing schedules to make sure the plants did not stretch. Some plants – especially those that thrive with the heat, such as lantana, angelina, portulaca, and verbena – are slightly behind schedule, but with a few warm sunny days these plants will take off.

We finished planting our 4” annuals, and our last crop of vegetables. We will plant another 200 hanging baskets this week and they will be ready by July 1^st.

Next week we will lay mulch and plant our pumpkins outside in the field for our fall hayrides. We’re just waiting for the soil to warm up and dry out a little. June 1^st we will start our mums for fall, as well as a late planting of broccoli and squash.

The first crop of hay is ready to be cut and put in the barn, if we can just get a four or five day stretch of dry weather.

There is only one more cow to calf yet this spring. She is due at the end of this month. We have had 15 newborn calves this spring so far – 5 boys (bulls) and 10 girls (heifers). If you are ever driving by – stop and watch the calves playing in the pasture. The best times are earlier in the day and close to dusk.

Planting Frenzy!

The days are getting longer and hopefully the temperatures will catch up. We are planting as fast our fingers will move. This week we finished taking our last set of geranium cuttings, cut back our ivy geranium hanging baskets one last time, and sowed another round of vegetable seeds. We finished planting all our bare root fruits and berries and perennials for the spring. We are transplanting marigolds, dahlias, dianthus, cosmos and snapdragons in the greenhouses at our farm. In the next 2 weeks we will have all the greenhouses filled.

We are continuing to plant our famous combination pots and hanging baskets, as well as work on special order planters as they come in. Many people will bring in their containers for us to fill now to give a jump start to spring. Come walk through our greenhouse, feel the sunshine and enjoy the smell of fresh soil and plants. Spring is just around the corner!

Ivey Geranium Hanging Baskets

Wow – busy days in the greenhouse. Our green thumbs are working overtime planting. To date we have 3,000 Hanging Baskets planted. This week we are planting large bulb dahlias, cannas, wave petunias, proven winner petunias, verbena, million bells, etc., as well as bedding geraniums.

Stock Geraniums

The 1^st week of March is when we do our last round of geranium cuttings. We take cuttings of our stock plants which we started in September. We will do a lot of moving of plants from one greenhouse to the next as they grow and require different temperatures or spacing. With high gas prices we make the most out of our greenhouse space.

Birding Supplies

The birds are still active at our feeders. Now is the time when they start a few of their mating rituals and begin looking for nesting boxes. Make sure that your houses and nesting boxes have been cleaned and put back up so that the birds can settle down to start a family. Blue birds are actively looking for a nesting spot now, so if you want them to be part of your backyard bird sanctuary you need to make sure you have a blue bird house and it is up properly. Provide a platform feeder with a Fruit and Berry mixed seed, adding in a few Meal Worms and you have the perfect blend to attract Blue birds (and the Robins will appreciate it as well). Up the Black Oil Sunflower seed and cut back a little on the millet in your feeders. Watch for male birds to be passing a seed or berry off to a female trying to win her over.

Feb. 21st…Signs of Spring.

Our pansies & violas are starting to bloom – We will be moving them into a cooler house so they are acclimated for the cool days of spring. These pansies and violas can be planted outside in April! It will be great to see flowers outside again!

We also transplanted our first tomatoes of the season – These will be the early crop for those who can’t wait for the taste of a homegrown tomato. We will feature these early tomato plants at the Medina Co. Home and Flower Show, March 26 & 27. A 4” potted tomato plant will be only $ .99. This includes heirlooms like Cherokee Purple, Pineapple, Abe Lincoln and Hillbilly as well as hybrids such as Better Boy, Grape tomatoes, Sungold Cherry and more!

Another sign of spring is all the new arrivals in our Gift Shoppe. From garden art, patio fire pots (new), ceramic pots, to silk florals. Mary Boyert Ryan is busy making arrangements and spring wreaths for your homes. Come in and see Mary for custom arrangements to fit your home.

Just came back from the Atlanta Gift and Floral Show. We will have some new and exciting home decor for the spring and summer. New merchandise will start arriving soon. We are changing seasons in the gift area, so come check us out.
Our 2011 Garden seeds have arrived,so think spring and start planning your garden. We are also going through our seed catalogs to find some unique heirloom vegetable varieties to add to the extensive list we already offer. We grow about 125 varieties of vegetables and 90 varieties of peppers. So everyone can find the plants they love. It makes your mouth water for some fresh tomatoes straight from the garden!
