We will meet at The Pour House at 5:30 for a refreshing New Belgium Brewing beverage or two and then gather on our bicycles to ride to Spectators Bar and Grill around 6:00pm.

Upon arrival at Spectators our gracious host Joe will cook up some free grub (probably bratwurst). We'll wash them down with another New Belgium brew after which we'll gather again on our bicycles to ride back to the Pour House.

The bicycle raffle will be drawn by Scott, our host at the Pour House and will take place at around 9:00 or 9:30pm.

New Belgium Brewing, Spectators, and the Pour House are all wonderful donors to the Bozeman Bike Kitchen so please come out not only to enjoy a fun ride, get some free grub, and enjoy a couple New Belgium beers, but also to support these local businesses as well as the Bozeman Bike Kitchen.

Please remember to be responsible this evening. Know when to say when, use bicycle lights at night, and ride responsibly! Also, parents who wish to bring minors along on the ride need to mind the state laws regarding their presence in these establishments.

Bicycle touring is one of the most liberating forms of transportation that allows for a complete stimulation of the senses, an intimacy with the environment through which you are traveling, the healthful motion your body craves, fresh exploration of places new or familiar, a chance to meet new friends, and most of all lots of fun!

The skills needed for bicycle touring are wide ranging and require bicycling skills, bicycle maintenance knowledge, camping experience, trip planning, and more. Touring can vary from single day 'supported' rides requiring car support to multi-week 'un-supported' tours requiring cyclists to carry all the gear and supplies necessary for subsistence.

Catherine, a Bozeman Bike Kitchen board member is a skilled bicycle tourer who is excited to share her knowledge and experiences with the Bozeman community this week. She will be presenting a bicycle touring 101 session complete with stories, a hands-on look at her gear, and a time for questions.

Tonight at 6:00 pm, the Bozeman City Commission is to decide whether to install bike lanes on Peach Street between Rouse and North 7th. The Bozeman Bicycle Advisory Board has recommended FOR the installation of these lanes to the Commission but the City Staff Report has recommended AGAINST installing them. It is important to attend the meeting and voice your support IN FAVOR of installing bike lanes. We need to convince the Commission to install the lanes despite the staff's recommendation.

People who wish to comment on this issue can do so at the beginning of the meeting during public comment. Prepare yourself by reading the informational packet provided by the City Staff. You may do this by clicking the agenda item "Peach Street Bike Lanes" from the cities website:

Winter Bicycle Commuting - by Hannah Arm

Winter is here and for you summer bike commuters your ride does not have to end with the nice weather. If you are interested in maintaining your bike commute during the winter months here are a few tips to get you ready:

1. Studded snow tires: Bozeman roads can be dicey in winter and can accumulate a fair bit of ice. Studded snow tires are a sure-fire way to get the grip needed to get through the ice. In fact they are so good you will be looking for ice to ride on!

2. Fenders: Your butt and legs stay dry, need I say more?

3. Bike Lights: The days are short so many of you are commuting to and from work in the dark. A set of bike lights will let the drivers know that you are there and you will feel a whole lot more comfortable knowing that they can see you.

Good luck with your winter commute! Know that I will be smiling at you under all my layers as we pass on our respective paths.

Our Mission

Bozeman Bike Kitchen Job Opening

The Office for Community Involvement at Montana State University is a resource that connects MSU students with area non-profits, school and governmental organizations as volunteers, interns, or work-study staff. The Bozeman Bike Kitchen has partnered with the Office for Community Involvement (OCI) to offer up a part-time position for an MSU student.

The position being offered is entitled Bozeman Bike Kitchen Campus Corps Member and means the student will be working as a team with other Campus Corps Members in the OCI which includes participating in community service projects, OCI events and activities and representing the OCI and promoting volunteerism on the MSU Campus. Supervision will be provided on campus by the OCI Program Coordinator and on site at the Bozeman Bike Kitchen by an appointed member of the Board of Directors.

A two-page description (view the pdf) of the position is available along with application, and eligibility information at the OCI Employment Opportunities website.

Thanks You Notes

Over the course of the summer we've had some very gracious donors, both financial and physical. We appreciate all donation whether big or small but wanted to pay some special attention to a couple organizations having helped us recently.

A special thank you is in order for the Gallatin Valley Bike Club for their donation of a Park Tool PK-63 Professional Tool Kit. Previous to the acquisition of this we were operating our bike shop without many necessary tools and had to turn away people with some complex bicycle problems.

Secondly the New Belgium Brewing Company teamed up with a couple local pubs, The Pourhouse and Spectators Bar and Grill for a well-attended community bicycle ride and grill-out called the Tour de Pour. New Belgium was kind enough to donate a beautiful cruiser bicyle as a raffle prize and the pubs were kind enough to sell raffle tickets as well as match a good chunk of the money raised from the raffle. Special thanks goes to the owner of Spectators for providing participants with a free BBQ and free Fat Tire as well as the matched raffle donations.

Would you like to help out the Bike Kitchen by making a non-cash donation? Below is a short list of items we have immediate need for. Please e-mail our head mechanic Casey to make arrangements to make these donations.

It went so well they decided rather than just give away a bike and other swag that they would hold a raffle for the bike with the proceeds going to benefit the Bozeman Bike Kitchen.

We are a small organization run entirely by volunteers, we operate with very low overhead, and we reuse and recycle again and again. Most importantly however we have a generous community supporting us.

This year we had wonderful help from Refuge, the sustainable building center. We have ongoing support in ways large and small from Summit Bike & Ski and Bangtail Bikes. We also received two grants. The first of our grants was from New Belgium Brewing Company, an employee-owned company that grants funds to various organizations that help individuals "joyously embrace a sustainable lifestyle". The second grant we received was from the Gallatin Valley Bicycle Club and will help us make a significant purchase of new and specialized tools necessary for us to function as a full-fledged bicycle repair facility. These were our first successful grant applications; we are humbled and inspired by the support. So please support your local bicycle club, thank a GVBC board member if you know one, and if you're lucky enough to be of age, enjoy a tasty bottle of Fat Tire!

Spring is in the air, the tulips are blooming and the grass is greening up. As the glacial activity of the road-side snow banks begins to recede and reveal gravely moraines in their wake, its time to think about spring biking. Taking off the studded tires and sprucing up the bike is a defining moment for many in our snowy climate. The impending break in the weather gives us all a chance to take off some of our layers and ride care free, at least for a couple of months.

The warm weather is fast upon us, and soon the smell of charcoal smoke and PBR will send many around the valley into a frenzy of summer excitement. It's easy this time of year to forget about routine bicycle maintenance, however, taking just a few minutes will dramatically increase your enjoyment of riding this summer. Whether your going from a backyard -que to front yard croquet match, or from a Wednesday night bike polo game to Saturday's Farmers Market its always better to ride a bike, and riding your bike is much better when it works right.

As always, the best thing you can do for your bike's health and wellbeing is give it a good bath. Like with any loyal friend, sometimes you just have to get down and dirty with some soapy water and really scrub 'em up. Clean all the caked on grit and grime from the chain, the gears and the derailleurs - if you haven't stripped them off yet. Use an old toothbrush and some bio-based degreaser. Refresh all those parts with a couple of squirts of chain lube; make sure you hit the pivot points of the derailleurs and brakes and all the cables. Wipe it all down with a dry rag and you're ready to go.

If your wheels still just aren't running as smooth as you'd like, then pedal (or push - as the case may be) your bike down to The Bike Kitchen on Tuesday or Thursday nights from 6 - 8 pm. The friendly staff will gladly dole out some advice and help you spruce things up, even if you just need some air in your tires.

If a new (used) bike is in your future, volunteering is a great way to meet new friends and earn your way towards some wheels. It also helps the Kitchen reach its mission of getting more recycled bikes on the road, which is good for the planet, good for our health as a community and good for your sanity - which you have to admit, after the long winter is a little questionable, right?

The Kitchen is always looking for volunteers to help fix up our impressive collection of well loved machines, plus it's a great way to learn about bike mechanics from a community of folks that love bikes too. Fixing up and getting on your bike is one of the best ways to enjoy in the spring. The weather is improving so its time to get out there and ride.

The Bozeman Bike Kitchen welcomes you all to the spring season, which as you know means be ready for anything: sun, snow, wind and rain. Spring also means cleaning the winter grime from your bike and getting ready for the glorious days of summer riding. To help, the Bike Kitchen is once again open on Tuesday and Thursday nights and looking forward to a fun and busy summer.

We need to remind everyone that our location is on a residential street. Our neighbors enjoy their dead end street for its quiet and lack of traffic. Please be considerate. We encourage everyone to ride a bike or walk to the kitchen (and everywhere) whenever possible. Cyclists and pedestrians please be respectful of the street and cars that use it. If you do drive to the kitchen please be considerate of our neighbors and remember their driveways and yards are not the appropriate places to park - - nor is the middle of the street. Please consider parking on Aspen to the West of Rouse and walking to the kitchen from there (being very mindful of the busy traffic on Rouse).

We are very excited by the growth of our work nights and love to have new people and old friends come and help us with our goal of getting bikes to folks that need them. Please also help us to be good neighbors.

Starting April 6th we will be returning to our summer shop hours which are:

The second annual Project Homeless Connect occurred on Saturday, September 19th. The purpose of Project Homeless Connect is to provide information about services to persons who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, and also to provide direct on-site services. Project Homeless Connect brings volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels together to serve people in our community experiencing homelessness. The goal is to come to the aid of those in need by offering a variety of services in this one day, one stop event.

The Bozeman Bike Kitchen participated again this year. Staff of the Kitchen serviced seven bikes and prepared two donated bikes that were given away via raffle at the end of the event. It was an enjoyable day of working with folks who rely on their bike as their primary transportation. A good deal was learned that will shape ways in which the Bozeman Bike Kitchen can help our community by providing fun and sustainable transportation to those who need it.

On a beautiful fall day in October seven Bozeman cyclists gathered with two League of American Bicyclists certified instructors at Allied Engineering for a day long, Traffic Skills 101 course. The group spent about three hours cycling and five in the classroom learning about everything from Montana traffic laws to basic bicycle maintenance.

The course is a stepping stone for furthering cyclist education and advocacy throughout thecity, state, region, and world. In 2010 the League hopes to train more instructors in Montana so that cyclist safety and legitimacy can continue to grow.

First, it was moving into our new space, and now, adding a second work night to our agenda. Doing Thursday nights is something that has been discussed for a long time, as well as being asked for by the community. It is really the presence of a new round of fresh and dedicated volunteer mechanics that has allowed us the ability to take on more hours during the week. I would like to personally thank those individuals who have really stepped up this summer.

I would also like to thank Summit Bike and Ski, in particular for several material donations of shop supplies. We are blessed with a tremendous cycling community in Bozeman, and the local bike shops are a crucial element of that community. Please support your local bike shops.

Summer may be winding down, but things are in full swing at your local community cycling center. Since we've expanded our hours, things have only gained momentum for the Bozeman Bike Kitchen. If you have been meaning to come down all summer, or if you're wondering what exactly it is I'm talking about, now is a great time to come down. We're open Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the garage at 425 Aspen.

All these things are what keep the Bozeman Bike Kitchen running smoothly and allow us to keep our doors open. This month a thank you goes out to Summit Bike and Ski for donating a number of patch kits as well as shop aprons. Bangtail Bikes also deserves a shout-out for letting us use their shop van to move some larger items that we couldn't fit on a bicycle. Always keep your local bike shop in mind when you're about to make a purchasing decision for new bicycle items.

Perhaps they are reading this, and if so can take this thank you to heart.

Catherine Schneider gets a big, big thank you for having worked diligently at painting the interior of the Bike Kitchen as well as creating our beautiful shop-front signage. Since its inception the Bike Kitchen has operated basically one night per week due to a lack of available and skilled volunteers necessary for operation. Starting tomorrow night the Bike Kitchen will open its doors every Thursday from 6pm to 8pm.

Initially the Bike Kitchen will operate on Thursdays exactly as it does on Tuesdays in that anyone is invited to come down and get help repairing their bicycle, look over and purchase a bicycle, or help wrench on bicycles that we are preparing for donation or sale. There is the possibility that we may change the structure of the Thursday night sessions in the future and only invite mechanics willing to fix up our ever-growing supply of bikes needing to be refurbished. Please keep this in mind and stay tuned to this e-mail newsletter for more info in the future.

These feelings are great and in order to keep them happening the Bozeman Bike Kitchen needs the financial help and support of people with means who live in the Bozeman community and beyond.
This is GVLT's stage of the Gallatin County Interconnect Challenge (Bozeman Chronicle article)

Everyone who participates will get a free GVLT trail map!
Meet at the parking lot on Goldenstein at 6:00 pm and head to the Library, where you'll be met by Gallatin County representatives and Bozeman Mayor Kaaren Jacobsen who will take your comments on trails, bike lanes and parks. Gallatin County is in the process of creating a new trails & parks plan which they're calling the Gallatin County Interconnect Plan. This is a great opportunity to have a voice in the priorities that will be set in the plan.

Please note that if you choose to walk (vs. run or bike), to get to the Library in an hour you'll have to walk fast. However, Mayor Jacobsen and the County representatives will be there until 8:00 pm.

Also, please note that if you can't join us Thursday evening, you can submit comments on the Interconnect Challenge Blog. Click one of the "comments" links below any of the images and type in your thoughts or concerns: http://interconnectchallenge.blogspot.com/

We're hoping for a good turnout so we hope to see you Thursday evening. If possible please RSVP to ted@gvlt.org so that we've got a rough count of how many people are coming. The County legal department wants everyone who participates to sign a waiver (obviously a bit more relevant for some of the other stages than for this one), so we want a rough idea of how many we'll need to have on hand.

Hope you can join us! Kids are welcome!

Bozeman Bike Kitchen Newsletter - Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

This summer has been a truly superb experience for the volunteer staff at the Bike Kitchen. We have been averaging 30 to 40 visitors to our Tuesday work nights and have a regular crew of about a dozen mechanics that show up at least three times a month. We see new faces every week both from people looking for bicycles, looking for work done on their bicycles, as well as people just looking to volunteer their time. We appreciate each and every last one of you. Remember although we're a non-profit organization our expenses are paid by the appreciated support from people like you.

Bozeman Bike-in Movies

This week marks the inaugrual session of Bike-In Movies at the Bozeman Bike Kitchen. Bike on down to the Kitchen on Sunday, July 12th for a dusk showing of the 1985 classic, Back to the Future. The Bike Kitchen will be open for regular work starting at 6:30 with the movie to follow at dusk. There will be a few other Bike-In Movie events this summer as well so stay tuned.

Secretary's Corner

I recently made the Bozeman Bike Kitchen's bi-monthly bank deposit. After adding and re-adding all the checks and cash I pushed the pile through the teller's window. What a relief! Contrasted with my anxiety about paying rent just 6 months ago, I am excited and energized by our community's response to the BBK. We have a small but steady stream of income from worknights where all people are able to get low-cost bike maintenance help and education. We also have a large supply of used bikes that will be sold at low cost or given away to low-income individuals once they are refurbished by our volunteers. The sale of these bikes helps to pay rent and buy supplies. Thank you to all of the folks who have donated in the last month, from dropping a few dollars in the jar to donating $100 on our website via Paypal, we are grateful for every cent!

We have also learned a bit of history about our location. The large garage with indoor plumbing in a residential area intrigued us. After the Bozeman Daily Chronicle published an article about the Bike Kitchen, a woman from Australia emailed us. Her father, Frank McHenry built the garage where the Kitchen is housed in the 1950's and used it for his logging truck. She said that he was always fixing things for his neighbors, including bikes. She and her sister were so pleased to learn that their dad's old garage has a new life that they made a very generous donation to us. It will be used for new stands, and to replace and repair damaged tools. A big thank you to the McHenry family too.

Our Mission

We are a cooperative cycling center dedicated to making the use of bicycles as transportation and fun possible for all members of the Bozeman community. We need volunteers of all ages and abilities to help us refurbish bikes. We are located in the garage behind 425 E Aspen.
