The Pursuit of Excellence…

Here is some great advice given to me by Shane Duffey as we dialogued about pursuing excellence in ministry.

STOP ASKING: “Does this work?”
START ASKING: “Is this the best it can be?”

He would go on to remind me that ‘tradition’ sets in the minute we settle for something simply “working” instead of striving for something maximizing it’s potential.

Application:
Is your time with God working… or is it the best it can be?

Is your marriage working… or is it the best it can be?

Does your student gathering work… or is it the best it can be?

Does your volunteer recruitment/training/placement work… or is it the best it can be?

Do your efforts to retain 1st time guests work… or are they the best they can be?

Does your corporate worship time work… or is it the best it can be?

Do your service transitions work… or are they the best they can be?

If you’re like me, you begin to see how this question exposes some major blind-spots. I found encouragement in this Biblical promise from Matthew:

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 ESV

God promises that our efforts in performing “good works” allow a miracle to take place. That miracle is that people would see God’s glory, and not just see it but people would give God glory. That’s what’s at stake.
