You may have noticed that there’s a new movement for hair coming through from the runways – well, not as much ‘new‘ for those of us who lived it before, but more a ‘return‘ to ’80s-style, big ’Dallas’-like dos. Already we are seeing many salon clients who want their hair to go to the ‘heights’ of fashion – so, as style-leader Carrie Bradshaw would pose: “Is big always better?”

To explore this question I worked with Noelle from Grazia last year creating a bouffant Sarah Jessica-Parker-esque do, and she was brave enough to road-test the look for 24-hours. I was fascinated by her perceptions… B x

Dear Prince,

You may be ‘Heir Apparent’…but unfortunately your hair is becoming far less apparant…

You are such a wonderful role model for a generation, so I’ll tread lightly, but no-one can fail to notice that you don’t seem to be taking any steps to look after your quickly retreating hairline. You are one of the wealthiest, most handsome men in the world and, given that money is no expense and you are so in the public eye, I would have thought that you would have taken some measure to address this follicular crisis by now. Now I’m not saying that bald cannot be beautiful – it is very dependant on the proportaions and shape of a man’s head, and it can even highlight other features like the eyes (of which yours are beautiful, William!), but some action now needs to be taken. Even that rascally brother of yours, Harry, has quipped to the press that you “were already bald at 12!”  If I were you…I would have had myself on a treatment program like Advangen at the first signs of hair loss. It’s a simple daily regime to prolong your hair in its growth cycle, maintaining fuller, thicker hair for longer. Hurry Wills – there’s still time! Otherwise, take the plunge with another option: plug it back in (ala ‘Warnie yah yah’), let it all go or shave it all off (ala Bruce Willis). But please, please, please, don’t do as Daddy Prince Charles did and comb it over – that never works for anyone! (And another point: take heart in that men’s hair loss is linked to the amount of testosterone they have – so the balder you go, the more of a man you must be technically!)

Grazia recently listed their favourite hair stylists…Here’s what they had to say about Brad…

How gorgeous was Adele! Not just a 6-time Grammy winner, but my choice as the style winner on Grammy night! I love that Adele wore her hair down and had a subtle, glamorous 60′s finish to her hair style. The colour is a stunning blend of warm and gold tones, and teamed with her flawless, classic makeup and an attention-demanding red lip, she lit up the red carpet, the stage and TV screens. (PS: I love that she has today announced that she is putting her singing career on hold for the next 5 years so that she can spend time concentrating on her new relationship – that woman is brave, confident and prioritises what’s important in her life in a way that is really admirable.)

Here’s how to get Adele’s award-winning look…

Start with a volumising shampoo like Kerastase Volumactive – this is the first layer of prep required. When conditioning, only put conditioner on the mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the root area so you can get more grip into the hair when styling. After thoroughly towel drying, spray in L’Oreal Professionel Volume Lift at the roots, then tip your head upside-down and blast dry until the hair is completely dried off. Use  large hot rollers (my favourite is the Cloud 9 ‘O’!) and wind the hair back away from the face. Once each roller is rolled, spray with L’Oreal Professionel Infinium Hair Spray to help the hair set and give body. Once the rollers have cooled down (this is when the volume has set into the hair) brush thoroughly with your head upside-down and use the hair spray again. Flick you head back, let you hair settle and use your fingers to gently finetune the fall of waves, then give another final spray of hairspray to hold.

Frizz, and mullet, and bangs, oh my…

I know that the Grammy’s are traditionally a little more relaxed and ‘cooler’ than the Globes or the Oscars, but Kelly, you looked like your dress had been caught in the door of the limo as you arrived, and then the limo took off dragging you by your hair! The mullet-esque styling, the rotten, dry,  yellowed ends and the chopped-up bangs – it wasn’t even a whole-hearted attempt at ‘grunge’, but a half-up/half-down/half-assed/grunge/rock/country mess! Kelly, If I were you… I would start thinking about presenting myself in a more polished way – lose the wild country-rock persona and present yourself with the confidence of the huge star that you have become. If you want to keep your hair long, then wear it up in a fierce ponytail – super tight, just above the crown…this is going to have the effect of elongating your silhouette. But – better still – I would suggest trimming it to shoulder length, keeping it longer in the front and colouring with ombre caramel tones to frame your face and bring out you skin tone. Please don’t go down the pinned-up mullet route ever again…
