People who smile often live longer and feel better about themselves because smiling gives a feeling of youth and vibrancy. Scientists have found that a mother watching her baby smile, actively produce endorphins which are called “the feel-good hormones”. What prevents most of us from smiling all day long – usually embarrassing teeth. Or maybe you just think that your teeth will never be as white as Hollywood Stars? Well, the good news is you can have exactly that!

Let’s start with the basics – Whitening is one of the Smile Secrets of the Stars. Teeth whitening has long become a common cosmetic procedure for Hollywood stars. Today there are several different ways of whitening the teeth. Firstly, chemical bleaching which involves wearing special caps made from a cast of human jaws and filled with bleaching agent. They are placed on the teeth for several hours a day. For the benefit of this procedure it is best done at night. It takes about 2-3 weeks to get full result. Light and laser whitening is done by the dentist, it can take from a few minutes to an hour. This method involves applying teeth whitening gel, usually containing hydrogen peroxide solution, activated by an ultra-violet light. Because each method has its advantages and disadvantages, choose one that is right for you. Our Dentist can help you decide with one simple consultation.

The Number two Smile secrets of the stars are Porcelain Veneers. These are thin porcelain crowns, made of ceramic, & produced by the dental laboratory over a few days. In just two visits Porcelain Veneers provide you an excellent and beautiful smile. Since the 1940′s it was the magic solution for Hollywood stars. Veneers have a pleasant look and shade does not differ from the natural teeth. Porcelain Veneers work wonders and give excellent results in teeth restoration, to even the most unpleasant teeth. The fact that the veneers are thin does not mean that they are fragile; they are strong enough to last as long as twenty years.

It is no secret that almost everyone dreams of a beautiful and healthy teeth, another way to achieve that is by getting dental implants, for missing teeth. Dental Implants are made of durable and lightweight metal – titanium and are implanted into the oral cavity using a special procedure, then a porcelain crown in place on top. It serves as the root of the tooth in the jaw of the patient. They set crowns (analogues of natural teeth) or dentures, which can be both removable and non-removable. With dental implants the absence of the tooth is not an obstacle for the perfect Hollywood smile!

Are are you still wondering how they keep them looking so good? Call our dental center! And we’ll be glad to help you find the right plan for you to get you that dazzling Hollywood smile!

Facial Development is an important aspect of general body growth, which means any congenital malformations such as a cleft palate need to be corrected as early as possible. Surgical treatments are needed in the case of congenital malformations of the face and if there is continuity in the treatment of patients with various specialists (surgeons, orthodontists, orthopedic surgeons, pediatricians, and others) there is a high rate of full facial correction.

The term “congenital malformation” – refers to the morphological changes in an organ or tissue beyond normal showing deviations from the normal structure. This is accompanied by functional impairment and delay in facial development. Congenital malformations of the face and jaw are complex dental problems in children; the urgency of this problem is due to the fact that almost all malformations of the face and jaws are accompanied with malformations of other organs and systems of the child. Currently, more than 180 syndromes are associated with malformations of the face, jaw and teeth. Congenital malformations of the maxillofacial region in children are not only medical but also a social problem whose solution requires a complex of measures aimed at disease prevention as well as treatment and rehabilitation of children with this disease.

The Role of a Dentist Trained in Facial Development and Treatment of Congenital Malformations

The role of the dentist in the treatment and rehabilitation of children with congenital malformations includes:

Discussing with parents about available treatment for the child

Organization and consulting an oral surgeon and if necessary other experts

Training parents on how to feed children with cleft lip and palate

The prevention of inflammatory complications,

Timely referral of child for routine operations and preparation of the child for surgery

Some Congenital Malformations that affect or delay Facial development:

Cleft lip and cleft palate

Craniosynostosis

Hemifacial microsomal

Vascular malformation

Hemangioma

Deformational plagiocephaly

Measures for the prevention and treatments of facial congenital defects are based on the causative factors because without knowledge of the main causes of malformations it is impossible to devise preventive measures. Though the formation of congenital defects of the face is mostly as a result of several teratogens, it is necessary to note the following adverse factors affecting the occurrence of congenital malformations: close family marriages, the age of the parents (especially mothers) and surgical intervention. We strongly recommend that before you plan to have a child, you should take surveys, visit genetics and have a healthy lifestyle.

To arrange a free consultation with a dentist to discuss the congenital malformations options for your child, please call us toll free at: 1-877-283-0497

Back to school is more than just for students of JK, SK, Elementary Students, High School and College/University but for all those teaching as well, and so we’re offering some back to school tips for getting ready and looking great. It’s a movement more than just an event.

And what marks this entourage more than shopping!

Just like the other changes in the cycle of life which typically happen after school, such as first career job, house, children’s marriage, and babies, then retirement, more marriages, and downsizing; all seem to earmark purchasing new items and trying new things to reflect our new stage in life.

Technology – has changed light years from clunky calculators – nowadays there’s an APP for that. Single devices have now merged into – well a touch screen Smartphone or tablet. Kids today do their homework on their digital tablet – by surfing the web, writing reports simultaneously while watching TV and texting their friends.

Supplies - the categories are merging as technology and fashion seep into this category. Such as branding on binders, books, pencils, or the like – or computers and laptops doing what pencils, binders and paper still do. Since the pen is still mightier than the sword, a few staple items will still do, keeping it basic is key – there’s lots of availability if one runs out and needs more. Even when it comes to branding – many teachers find the light-up flashy pencil sharpener is just a distraction to everyone in the class.

Fashion – the top priority for some, and lower but still essential for others – fashion could mean wardrobe (clothing), haircut, grooming; and it could mean the latest superhero branding on supplies.

a) Wardrobe – Getting a trendy piece or two, or perhaps a couple accessories (like a hat, or belt) can keep one up to date, but essential pieces like jeans and tees will keep one throughout the year. Trends will change and if the 80’s is any example, you may want to keep to the basics, or your pictures will surely tell the tale!

b) Haircut – There used to be only 2 styles for boys – buzzed and Leave-it-to-Beaver; now there are a plethora of mens’ and boys’ styles; if this is important to your child then you may want to take them to a mid range salon, if not then the basics will do. Guys don’t typically wear make-up so the only style options they have are through clothing, hair, grooming, and presence (attitude, confidence, values, etc).

c) Smile/Dental – Always a consideration, primarily for health, but also fitting into the fashion category – and life – a big beautiful white smile can also help get that job interview or the spouse later on in life… which is important to start early.

Especially for college and university students, if they’re going to be away from home – best to get them all dentally “tuned-up” – checkup, cleaning, fixes such as cavities and teeth whitening.

For the littler ones, it’s a good time to get them back in their routine, as it’s a helpful reminder to ensure they’re getting the proper dental care when done in frequency, and both good habit and care to help their teeth last until their twilight years.

These teeth we have are meant to last for the rest of our lives. If it were our car that had to last 80+ years, then maintenance would be in the forefront. Similarly with our teeth and our mouths – including the gum that holds them in, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Some items such as a pulled tooth is permanent and there’s no un-do; only mechanically re-build (implants)… or dentures.

If you are going back to school and are looking for tips to start the school year with sparkling, shiny, white teeth we are offering a great deal for teeth whitening for back to school students – call us now while it’s still available 1-877-283-0497

How Can Bulimia Cause Irreversible Damage To You Teeth?

It’s amazing how the human body works together, and each part can have an effect on other parts, both good and well, bad. Our body can give clues to what’s going on in our lives that we don’t tell anyone.

Bulimia nervosa (commonly called Bulimia) is considered an eating disorder typically by eating large amounts of food (binge) – and then by purging, trying to get rid of the extra calories consumed in an unhealthy way; such as inducing vomiting, misusing laxatives, diuretics (Purging bulimia) or even excessive exercise (Nonpurging bulimia).

So Why Talk About Bulimia With a Dentist?

You may think you’ve hidden it well, however, your dentist may already have some ideas of your secret, because your teeth have already told the story.

You may feel that your teeth are sensitive to food, heat, cold, or just hurt a lot in general. Not to mention crunchy food such as apples, croutons. Intense daily tooth pain is very common for bulimia sufferers due to enamel erosion. Damaged teeth and gums is often extensive with people with Bulimia, even after recovery from Bulimia.

In addition other commonly heard teeth issues are fillings falling out, cracked tooth (even from eating soft foods). Even if you don’t purge by vomiting, one’s body can be compromised (nutritional deficiencies) such that nutrients aren’t effectively making it back to the mouth for maintenance and repair. Vomiting is very acidic; this acid can wear down and weaken the enamel on the teeth, often permanently.

The one thing with teeth, we often take them for granted, and if one or more cracks or falls out – there’s no more minor fixes – the options are – a gap, a bridge or an implant. There’s no un-do… that’s the biggest factor. Many people have learned that the hard way, and had they known then, what they know now, they would have lived their lives differently. (Some have had to have dentures, even as young adults).

If your teeth are starting to appear worn, ragged, thinning, chipped or discoloured, it’s best to get it looked at right away, even if you don’t see any visible signs, that’s no indication of what could be happening at the roots – some who didn’t see anything and thought they had “gotten away” with any teeth problems due to bulimia found out later, that it wasn’t the case… better to have gone in and seen if some preventable measures were available. Fixing a lot of damaged teeth can be very expensive, especially replacing missing teeth; its time to realize there’s much more at stake to your overall health. See a dentist right away.

Tartar, also known as calculus, is really only a hardened form of dental plaque. Plaque is a sticky, colorless film that forms between your teeth and on the surface of them. It starts to build up on your teeth just 20 minutes after eating and if it’s not removed right away, it will harden into tartar which will be rock hard after 12 days.

Tartar, hardened plaque, is not something you want to have as it can make your teeth look ugly, feel ugly and smell ugly. It all starts after eating any kind of meal or snack which is when the bacteria in plaque will release acids that attack the enamel on your teeth. And on top of all that, tartar and plaque can lead to the following problems:

Cavities

Gingivitis (swollen, inflamed and bleeding gums)

Periodontitis (bone destruction which can lead to tooth loss)

Bad breath

Abscesses

Pain

Inability to use your teeth

Other health problems outside your mouth, from to heart disease

Once you have tartar on your teeth, there is no other way to deal with it but to see your dentist right away, before it really starts to do some irreversible damage. Tartar and plaque can lead to major tooth problems like gum disease and bone loss but your dentist has ways to remove the tartar once it builds up. These two methods, scaling and/or root planing, are non-surgical and done right in your dentist’s office.

To maintain your healthy teeth and avoid plaque and tartar, it is important to have regular teeth cleaning done by your dentist or dental hygienist as the plaque can collect in areas that are very hard for you to reach with brushing. This routine cleaning may involve dental x-rays if your dentist feels this is necessary. And dental sealants can be used to help protect your teeth from decay by sealing over any pits, cracks or grooves in your teeth.

The best cure is always prevention and you can help to prevent plaque and tartar by seeing your dentist regularly and by finding out how to brush and floss your teeth properly. It is also very important to have a well balanced diet to maintain your healthy teeth and gums as healthy teeth are clean and have few cavities and healthy gums are pink and firm.

To help you prevent plaque and tartar, the steps to follow are listed below:

Brush your teeth at least twice daily

If possible, brush after every meal, snack and at bedtime

Floss at least twice a day

Have routine cleaning and examinations

Have your teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months

Keep dentures, retainers and other appliances clean

Be sure to talk to your dentist or hygienist to learn the proper way to brush and floss but, for now, follow the above steps and listed below are some general recommendations for preventing and/or removing plaque or tartar from your teeth:

Be sure your toothbrush has soft, rounded bristles

Your toothbrush should not be too large for your mouth

You should be able to reach every surface of your mouth easily

Toothpaste should contain fluoride

When flossing, do it gently as intense flossing can injure your gums

Find out if you need any special appliances or tools, such as water irrigation or electric toothbrushes along with your regular brushing and flossing

Find out if you need any special toothpaste or mouth rinse as some over-the-counter ones may do more harm than good, depending on your condition

In between dental visits, below are some additional ways to prevent plaque or tartar buildup:

Avoid snacks that are starchy or sugary

Do not use tobacco products

Limit your snacks

Use a proper cleaner to clean between your teeth

For more information on how to protect your teeth from plaque and tartar, or book an appointment for cleaning call us at: 1-877-283-0497.

Stained teeth can be very embarrassing and nothing to smile about. It can be the source of many an unhappy moment and stolen memories. You don’t want to smile for fear that someone is staring at you and making fun of the colour of your teeth.

Stained teeth are the most common complaint that dentists hear from their patients. It is also one of the easier dentistry problems that can be fixed but brushing alone is not the solution for your teeth.

What are the main causes to discolouring of teeth? Cigarettes and tobacco are the worst offenders. Coffee, tea, wine, cola and fruit juices are also big offenders. Any foods that can stain your clothing or carpets can probably put stains on your teeth.

Aging is also a big offender to teeth yellowing, as well as poor dental hygiene. The hard outer coating to your teeth called enamel, wears thin allowing the underneath yellow dentin layer to show through.

Some prescription drugs and vitamins can cause stained or uneven looking teeth. Excessive use of fluoride can also cause teeth to become stained and should be used in moderation.

Prevention is the best solution to teeth staining. Brushing your teeth 3 times daily (or at least after every meal) and regular dentist checkups are key to early prevention.

There are many methods to get rid of stained teeth and some work better than others. We recommend that you check with your dentist before trying any at home remedies or store bought remedies to be sure you are using the right product for the stain you have and whether you are using it safely.

Teeth whitening is a simple and usually painless procedure (although some may be sensitive to it) and has immediate results. In about an hour your teeth can be up to eight shades whiter! The procedure takes about 90 minutes altogether.

Zoom whitening is a sure fire way of brightening your smile from stained teeth and boosting your confidence. Zoom whitening involves the use of gel applied to your teeth, then the application of a UV light to activate the gel.

A pre treatment of your gums and lips involves isolating them before the gel can be applied to your teeth. The Zoom whitening procedure is three stages of a gel/bleach application and light applicator at about 20 minutes each. The light produces some heat but it is tolerable and not normally enough to make the patient uncomfortable.

Teeth Veneers are also a very good way at covering: stained teeth, gaps, or making crooked teeth look straight. They can also make you look years younger without undergoing cosmetic surgery!

Veneers are for just about everyone but if you have another underlying gum problem or tooth decay, that needs to be treated before you get your veneers.

The veneer procedure takes about 2-3 visits at most dentists that perform this procedure. In the first visit, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and send it to a lab that will make your veneers. Some prep work of your teeth may need to happen, like scraping some tooth enamel in order to make room for the veneers. Bradford Family Dentistry can give you Lumineers Veneers in 2 visits, or Cerec Veneers in just 1 visit, as we have the equipment on site to do this! You can also watch as the veneers are being made by the 3D printer.

With most dentists, in 1 – 2 weeks your veneers will be ready. In your second visit to the dentist office, the veneers will be bonded and fitted to your original teeth. Sometimes the veneers will need to be shaped or the colour adjusted and the veneers sent back to the lab.

Teeth whitening techniques in the dental office are very safe and you will save yourself a lot of headache, time and money! Teeth whitening techniques work very well for stained teeth and are very effective at making them several shades whiter.

Give us a call 1 – 877 – 283 – 0497 and we can provide you a free consultation for stained teeth treatment options to give you the whitest smile you’ve ever had.

An overbite or a malocclusion, as it’s known in dental circles, is when your upper teeth jut way out over your lower teeth and this is commonly known to most people as “buck teeth.” When they do not meet properly, it will affect your other teeth as well as your gums, neck and head, the muscles of your jaw, your jaw joint and your oral health. A large percentage of children do develop an overbite and this makes it the most common problemseen by orthodontists.

There are two kinds of malocclusions, or overbites, and they are as follows:

Vertical Overbite:

The top teeth overlap the bottom teeth too much and this can cause discomfort, excessive wear on your front teeth, bone damage and the eventual loss of the upper incisors.

Crossbite:

The lower teeth, when closing your mouth, sit just in front of the upper teeth.

There are a number of things to look for that will tip you off to an overbite situation and, if you notice any of them, be sure to see your dentist and talk about how it can be treated. The signs are as follows:

Excessive tooth wear

Tooth loss

Previous root canals

Tooth sensitivity

Head and neck muscle pain

Headaches

Jaw joint pain

Joint noises

These can also be symptoms of other problems so, once again, be sure to see your dentist and find out what is causing the symptoms.

Now you may be asking yourself what causes an overbite so following are a few of the causes:

Genetics – you inherit the size of your teeth and the shape of your jaw from both parents so if you end up with your mother’s jaw and your father’s teeth, there you have it…an overbite

Thumb or finger sucking past age two

Chronic nail biting

Chronic pencil chewing

Tongue thrusting

Overbite (malocclusion) can negatively affect your oral health also as, if left untreated, it can lead to the following:

Muscle pain

Chronic headaches

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)

Tooth movement

Tooth loss

Injuries to the teeth

Tooth wear

Tooth sensitivity

Permanently damaged front teeth

Protruding front teeth are a target for trauma such as risk of injury when playing sports

Problems eating properly which could lead to mild malnutrition

The ever present trauma of teasing due to buck teeth

Any or all of the above can lead to pain, chipped or broken teeth and even failed restorations so your dentist will develop a treatment plan to correct the overbite. Before he/she can do this, a full series of X-rays, photographs and impressions of your teeth are needed to models can be made of how they come together. This is what your dentist will use to decide on the best way to treat your overbite.

Now here is some information on the treatment of your overbite. The treatment itself will probably last about 2 years and is divided into 2 stages both of which require a full set of braces. Stage 1 is called ‘leveling and aligning’ which serves to get all the teeth straight by using braces and stage 2 works specifically on your overbite. This pushes all your top teeth, as well as your molars, back to where they belong.

Your bottom teeth may also need to be gently pushed forward for you to get a proper bite and this is done with rubber bands, nickel-titanium coils, springs or headgear which will be worn through this second stage of correcting your overbite. Many children and, I suppose, adults as well don’t like to wear headgear to most orthodontists will use the coils, springs or rubber bands which all give great results.

A dental abscess is an infection of the mouth, face, jaw or throat that began as a cavity or tooth infection. These infections can be caused by preventable improper dental hygiene or the unpreventable condition of autoimmune disorders. Dental abscesses can also be caused by trauma in the mouth or oral cavity.

A dental abscess can form when bacteria is carried from the cavity and extend to the gums, cheek, tongue, throat etc and it can be very painful when the tissues become inflamed. A dental abscess can also be caused by dead pulp tissue caused by untreated tooth decay or a cracked tooth.

The abscess forms because it is the body’s natural defence mechanism in which the body attempts to localize the infection so that the infection can not spread from the area.

Pus can develop at the site of the infection and will become progressively more painful until the abscess ruptures and is drained on its own or is drained surgically.

There are three different types of dental abscesses:

gum or gingival abscess is the result of an infection or trauma to the surface of the gum tissue. It is caused by an injury to or infection of the gum tissue

periodontal abscess is the result of an infection that has moved deeper into the gum areas and pain and pus are present

periapical abscess refers to a tooth with an infection of the soft pulp of the tooth.

Dental abscesses can be severe enough to make you ill and cause nausea, vomiting, fevers, chills and sweats. The pain may be described as sharp, shooting or throbbing. It is normal for the tooth and surrounding gums to be very painful to the touch.

Getting the abscess looked at by your dentist right away will not only save your teeth and gums but your overall well being.

The dental abscess may get more painful if warm liquids or pressure is applied to the area. Pain and swelling may be reduced if you apply ice packs.

An acute abscess may become present and have no pain but will still have a lot of swelling. You still need to have this checked by your dentist before it gets worse.

In severe cases the dental abscess may perforate through the bone and may drain out into the surrounding area causing facial swelling and pain. The pain can feel like a migraine. In some cases the lymph glands can become swollen and painful to touch.

Treatment for a dental abscess starts with fighting the infection; reduce swelling and possibly root canal to fix the affected tooth. Treatment of the infection and swelling starts with antibiotics and draining the pus from the infected area. Root canal or tooth extraction may be necessary only if the infection spreads that far.

Before you can get to your dentist, we recommend that you use an over the counter pain killer, drink lots of fluids (not hot ones) and eat soft foods, and get some bed rest.

Failure to treat a dental abscess can cause serious infection and tooth loss as well as some underlying gum damage – for a free consultation call us at 1-877-283-0497.
