Our annual Tea in the Park (aka Fun!) day is coming soon: Saturday August 30th.

The day would not be possible without the help of members. And we still need a few more volunteers:

We need volunteers to set up the stalls at 10.30 in the morning: we meet at the church to collect tables, chairs and gazebos from the crypt.

We need volunteers for various other stalls such as: Home baking, Coconut Shy, Hook a Duck, Lucky Lollies, Duck Race ticket sales, Ice Cream, Dog Show and maybe Face Painting.

We need someone living close to the park to store two tubs of ice cream (4.5 litres) in their freezer for an hour around 12.30.

Finally we need a first-aider (someone with a current first aid qualification) to be available throughout the event. This could be someone helping at a stall, but able to leave it in the unlikely event that they are required.

Please volunteer – either for a specific activity, or to help in general. The event itself begins at 12.30.

Please reply to volunteering@braidburnvalleypark.org.uk.

On Sunday April 13th from 2 to 4pm we will be organising a range of activities to help maintain the park.

Clean-up As usual we will provide all that is needed (litter-pickers, hoops, bags, some gloves -but better to bring your own) for our biannual park clean-up. This is an activity suitable for all: families with eager kids are particularly welcome. Children (under 16) just need to bring their own adult.

Work parties We also hope to run a small number of work parties, focussing on some more specific tasks.

If you plan to join in the clean-up, there is no need to let us know; just turn up. If you think you’d like to join one of the work parties please let us know a couple of days in advance by emailing Brian Smith at our volunteering address, volunteering@braidburnvalleypark.org.uk. That will help us finalise the work-plan, and make sure that we have the right tools on hand.

Whatever you plan to do, we will meet at the usual place, close to the main path, below the Rutterford Mural. We hope to see you!

With daylight increasing and spring now fast approaching, come and join us in the Park on Sunday 16th February for our next volunteer session. We’re looking at assembling and positioning compost bins and tidying up the entrances to the Park. Perhaps also weaving the willow structure.

No experience or particular skills required. Just enthusiasm and a wish to help with the upkeep of the Park. Please meet at the gates at the North (Greenbank Church) entrance at 2pm. Weather dependent, we plan to do a couple of hours work, but no obligation to stay the whole time.

If you’re keen, or have any queries, it would be great if you could let us know by emailing volunteering@braidburnvalleypark.org.uk just to give us an advance idea of numbers.

Please bring your own gloves. Other tools will be provided.

Some of FOBVP’s committee members will be standing down at the AGM so we need a member or two to join us to keep the ship afloat. The commitment is not onerous: the committee meets 4 times a year (usually by Zoom), and makes many decisions by email. No special skills are required – just a continuing interest in the welfare of the park and its users. On this occasion we would particularly welcome someone who is willing to take over the organisation of our annual Tea in the Park, now that Claire Jellema is passing on that responsibility. She’ll be passing on her organisational notes and lists of volunteers too!

If you are interested, or would like to find out more, please email Paul Bailey (FOBVP Chair) at pvb987@gmail.com .

From Claire Jellema:

Planning for this year’s Tea in the Park is now underway. The day is always such a fun community event. Last year’s event was jam packed with local people enjoying and celebrating our park, there was such a fantastic wholesome buzz in the air. It felt really special.

This year’s event will follow a very similar format with our infamous duck races, ice creams and home baking, mini fair games and various sporting challenges too. And hopefully, if we can recruit someone to support it, our fabulously fun dog show too.

Can you Volunteer on the day?

We really do need to recruit more volunteers for the day to be both successful and enjoyable for all those involved. So if you can spare a few hours on the day, please do sign up to volunteer.

Date: Sat 31 Aug

Time: 12:30p,m – 2:30pm

Set up from: 10am

Tidy up by: 4pm

Could you invite a neighbour of friend to volunteer?

Obviously our network of 200 members is great and so many of you get involved in various park projects, but if you can think of a friend / neighbour / family who might also be keen to volunteer on the day, please do ask them to support the park an our event.

Want to get involved in the dog show?

Our very wonderful Lucy is not available to organise and run this year’s dog show, but we’re hopeful that with a couple of extra volunteers we can keep the dog show as part of the day. It really is so much fun, and much loved by the dogs, their owners and all the spectators too. I can sort all the admin / logistics, but we really do need 1,2 or 3 people to run it on the day, helping to sort dog registrations and supporting the PA/ring Master to invite dogs into the ring for the differing award categories, and then overseeing the judging. Anyone who does offer to help will of course be well supported. For sure!

Please reply direct to Claire at jellemafamily@hotmail.co.uk if you can volunteer or have any questions or suggestions about the day.

We plan to hold our first clean-up of the year on Sunday April 21st from 2 to 4pm. We will provide rubbish-pickers, hoops and bags; but please bring your own gloves (and refreshments!) if you need them. We’ll meet in the usual place, in the middle of the park, down below the Rutterford Mural. All are welcome. But please note that children under 16 must bring their own adult.
