Toshiba JournE Tablet Computer is a new tablet computer release that will be the main rival for Apple in dominating tablet computer market. JournE Tablet Computer has good look with it’s brushed aluminum body and weighs just under two pounds. It features seven-inch touchscreen. The tablet runs Internet Explorer 6 and Toshiba said it comes ready to access Picasa, YouTube, Flickr and instant messenges. It includes Windows Multimedia Player 9.0 for viewing pictures and videos and playing music. The operating system is Windows CE 6.0 Pro with a Toshiba interface and Wi-Fi. The JournE uses an ARM chip and has 1GB of NAND Flash memory.

A base station cradle with USB and HDMI outputs will be sold separately. The dock also charges the JournE and has a memory-card slot that can add up to 320GB of memory. On bootup, the JournE shows three rows of shortcut icons, five to a row. Each icon provides access to an application or a service, including a Toshiba Store that will offer apps for the device. A keyboard appears on-screen as needed.Battery life is listed at 14 hours, and it uses 802.11bg Wi-Fi, not draft-n. 1GB of internal memory comes as standard, with an SD card slot available if you wish to expand.

The tablet is expected to launch in Europe in the fourth quarter and roll out to other countries later. It is expected to sell for 249 euros (US$356.43), much less than the $500 to $700 range expected for Apple’s tablet.

User Reviews on these educational games

M. Lacy “Lacy” (St. Louis, Missouri United States)

If you want to sneak in a little learning between homework assignments for 1st graders, I think this is a great way to do it. It may not be advanced enough for 2nd graders however.

Orsola M. Charette (california, usa)

Very interesting & slightly challenging games to aid learning; nice graphics & storyline. Kids love it–have 2 preschool, 1 K, 2 2nd and 1 3rd grade–all wait (and watch others progression) impatiently to play it. Had initial problems with installing & some sound or stopping (on Vista) but got immediate response that fixed all from Disney on line.

Wolverine in Indiana (Greenwood, IN)

We got this as a gift last May for our son’t 5th birthday. He enjoys it very much, but the reading (Aladdin) disk seems to need more RAM than the other disks. You must have QuickTime in order to use this product.

Adobe Photoshop product manager (and frequent blogger) John Nack recently updated his blog with details on compatibility issues between Adobe’s Creative Suite 4 package and Mac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard,” which ships Friday. “As for CS4, everything is good with the exception of auto-updates to Flash panels (which I guarantee you’re not using*) and Adobe Drive/Version Cue (which doesn’t work at the moment on 10.6),” Nack wrote. Nack noted that Adobe Creative Suite 3 and earlier have not been tested for Snow Leopard compatibility, however. In response to an upswell of comments about that remark, Nack later updated his blog with more information:

“No one said anything about CS3 being “not supported” on Snow Leopard. The plan, however, is not to take resources away from other efforts (e.g. porting Photoshop to Cocoa) in order to modify 2.5-year-old software in response to changes Apple makes in the OS foundation,” wrote Nack.

Apple’s new Snow Leopard software isn’t as big of a step forward from its predecessor as Windows 7 will be from Windows Vista. The most important changes in the Apple operating system are under the hood, allowing software developers to rewrite their programs to run much faster. Snow Leopard is a relatively cheap upgrade, costing $29 for an individual user who has Leopard, the previous operating system. A “family pack” for five users costs $49.

For Mac owners using the older Tiger operating system, switching to Snow Leopard costs $169, or $229 for a family pack. That “box set” includes the latest iLife and iWork software for such tasks as movie editing, photo organizing and word processing. Buying the DVD is the only upgrade option for consumers — you can’t download the software.

What’s the catch? Well, part of the reason Snow Leopard can promise faster, better applications is that it’s designed for Macs with Intel chips, which Apple started using in early 2006. It won’t run on older Macs with the previous PowerPC family of chips. The launch of the new operating system is a hint to get a new computer.

In an Apple’s demonstration of the software to The Associated Press, these were some of the most obvious changes that stood out in Snow Leopard:

• The built-in e-mail, calendar and address book applications will support Microsoft Exchange servers, the kind used by most companies. That means it will be easier to get company e-mail without using dedicated programs like Entourage or Outlook, which Microsoft is releasing for Macs late next year. However, Snow Leopard supports only the most recent release of Exchange.

• Moving the mouse cursor over a program icon in the “dock” at the bottom of the screen reveals all the windows open in that program, tiled side by side. This is an extension of the “expose” feature, which shows all windows in all programs side by side.

• Right-clicking in a window should bring up more relevant choices, bringing this function closer to its Windows equivalent.

• The new standard version of the QuickTime video-playing software will now convert clips for playing on iPhones or iPods, or upload them to YouTube. You will also be able to trim clips. Previously, you had to buy QuickTime Pro to convert videos or fire up the more time-consuming iMovie.

• You can make the file thumbnails even bigger, giving you a better idea of the contents of your hard drive at glance.

• The operating system is more compact, freeing about 7 gigabytes of hard drive space previously claimed by Leopard.

• Ejecting disks should be easier. Sometimes, Macs won’t let you eject a disk or disconnect a drive because the operating system believes it’s reading or writing to it. Apple says Snow Leopard will be better about freeing up the disk, or if it can’t, it will give a reason.

• Web browsing and image and document previews should be noticeably faster. This is because more of the software now processes data in 64-bit chunks, twice as big as before. Other applications should benefit from this change as well, once developers start writing them in 64-bit versions.

• Developers will also be helped by a new system called Grand Central Dispatch, which makes it easier to take advantage of the multiple “cores” in today’s processors, boosting the speed of heavy-duty applications like video editing. It will also be easier to take advantage of more system memory.

Lastly, Apple is making it easier to tap into what can be the most powerful computing engine in a desktop PC: the graphics chip. While the central processing unit does most of the heavy lifting, the graphics chip is mostly called upon to generate screen images. Developers will now be able to expand the uses of the graphics chip, which could make for smarter enemies in video games and more realistic simulations of real-life objects.

So how does Snow Leopard compare to Windows 7? Snow Leopard’s benefits will be most apparent down the road, while Windows 7 promises more of an immediate payoff.

Windows 7 combines a bigger revamping of the user interface of Microsoft’s last effort, Vista, with a series of smaller under-the-hood changes. It even can work on many older PCs — in fact, Windows 7 is supposed to run better on modest hardware than Vista did.

Apple’s share of the U.S. personal-computer market nearly tripled from 2004 to 2008 but hasn’t gone up significantly since then, and now stands at around 8.5 percent, according to IDC. So Apple could use a fresh reason for buyers to get excited about Macs.

Snow Leopard is unlikely to provide that. People already have a high opinion of Apple’s software. What holds them back from switching from Windows is still the relatively high price and limited selection of Macs and third-party software. Coming in as the underdog in the public-perception contest, Microsoft has more to gain from these software revamps.

For most Mac users, Snow Leopard will likely be a no-brainer upgrade, given the low price. But early upgraders often face minor bugs and installation problems, so unless you’re dying for one of the new features, waiting a month or so is a safer course.

Sony Reader Daily Edition is an e-book reader with the ability to wirelessly download e-books. The device has a 7-inch touch screen and will be able to get books, daily newspapers and other reading material over AT&T Inc.’s cellular network. Sony has sold e-book reading devices with “electronic ink” displays in the United States since 2006. Sony also began selling a “Pocket Edition” e-book reader with a 5-inch screen, for $199, and a larger $299 touch-screen model. Neither has wireless capability, so both have to be connected to a computer to acquire books.

Sony has committed to an open e-book standard, meaning its Readers can show copy-protected books from a variety of stores, and the books can be moved to and read on a variety of devices, including cell phones.

Sony also announced Tuesday that the Readers will be able to load e-books “loaned” from local libraries. A library card will provide access to free books that expire after 21 days. The alliance with AT&T helps the Dallas-based carrier further expand the use of its wireless network beyond cell phones. Like other carriers, AT&T is looking for new avenues of growth now that almost every adult has a cell phone. In July, it announced that it would provide the connection to another upcoming e-book reader from Plastic Logic Ltd., which will use the e-book store of Barnes & Noble Inc.

Reader owners won’t be charged a subscription fee for wireless access, said Steve Haber, head of Sony’s U.S. reading division. Instead, the bookseller will likely have to pay AT&T for the wireless access, out of money it charges for the books, similar to the way Amazon pays Sprint. Sony’s multi-store strategy makes that challenging. The Daily Edition will initially have wireless access only to Sony’s e-book store, Haber said.

Sony said the names of the newspapers that will be available on the device will be announced later. Sony’s Reader Daily Edition will go on sale by December for $399

Canon U.S.A. on Monday introduced the imageFormula DR-2510M and DR-2010M desktop scanners, the first fully Mac-compatible high-speed document scanners offered from Canon. They’re priced at $795 and $555 respectively. Both scanners share a similar design, with USB 2.0 interfaces, “Scan-to-Job” buttons that send images directly to an application, shared network folders, e-mail or the printer, and both come with TWAIN-compliant drivers to integrate with scanning software. Bundled with the scanners is Canon CaptureOnTouch software, as well.

Other shared features include “Advanced Text Enhancement,” color dropout correction and auto color detection, text orientation recognition, “Folio Mode” and “Long Document Mode” to scan odd-sized documents, and slant paper paths to handle thick documents, driver licenses and embossed plastic cards.

The DR-2510M can scan black and white, color and greyscale pages at 25 pages per minute in simplex mode, or 50 inches per minute in duplex mode. The DR-2010M manages the same at 20 pages per minute in simplex mode, 40 inches per minute in duplex mode.

The scanners operate at 600 dot per inch optical resolution and can accommodate up to 50 pages in their automatic document feeders.

Nokia Booklet 3G is a Windows-based netbook with an Intel Atom processor from Nokia. The Mini Laptop as Nokia called this product is aimed to compete in netbook market. As Nokia sees it, more people want the computing power of a PC with the full benefits of mobility. The Booklet 3G uses Intel’s Atom processor and offers up to 12 hours of battery life. Nokia promises its latest innovation will deliver the experience of a full-function PC in an ultra-portable box with a 10-inch glass high-definition-ready display.

Nokia Booklet 3G weighs 1.25 kilograms, is about two centimeters thin, and has a variety of connectivity options. Users can choose to connect via 3G/HSPA or Wi-Fi to get high-speed Internet access. The mini-laptop is also equipped with an HDMI port for HD video out, a front-facing camera for video calling, integrated Bluetooth, and a SD card reader. The Booklet 3G even comes with integrated A-GPS which, working with the Ovi Maps gadget, can pinpoint a user’s position and create a personal map.

The Booklet 3G aims to bring Ovi experiences to life, whether it’s access to song tracks through the Nokia Music Store or using Ovi Suite to sync from a Nokia smartphone to the mini-laptop to the cloud. Ovi is Nokia’s suite of Internet services, which includes games, maps, media, messaging and music.

“Nokia has a long and rich heritage in mobility and with the outstanding battery life, premium design, and all-day, always-on connectivity, we will create something quite compelling,” Oistamo said. “In doing so we will make the personal computer more social, more helpful, and more personal.” Nokia said it will offer detailed specifications, market availability, and pricing at Nokia World on Sept. 2.

As for the manufacturer, Vizio is no longer a newcomer to the flat-panel market. It is currently selling about 10 percent of all flat panels bought in the United States. The big question for consumers is picture quality: it’s cheap and it is a great sets. you’d be happy to have one of these LCDs in your living room, and at that price, getting one into your home may be more possible than you previously believed.
