2017 Post Mortem Reflection

Happy New Year! I am just taking a moment to gather some memories and visual impressions of my 2017. I find reflection an important part in not only feeling grateful for all in my life butt also it is helpful in thinking about how to move forward knowing where and what you have done.

Well 2017 really began as so dark and depressing, a strange at many times dystopian and unbelievable backwards year with so much chaos in our country and the world ... yet we also had so many beautiful moments full of unity pushing towards progress!

Now moving into 2018 I still feel very much on that same path #resisting being aware involved and voting every single time making calls writing letters. Basically doing whatever it takes to make my voice heard as well as and more importantly appreciating nature - respecting it, loving friends and family taking time to be with them, basically honoring and holding our lives up the best way we can. We never know how long we have so making sure to take all that you love in life from family, friends, music, art and travel and leaning into that to feel as whole and full in your heart as you can.

Also having an open heart to spread love and kindness and help to those in need from all the unbelievable storms like Maria. This has been a difficult year for so many, so much loss. But what I always find so heartening is seeing the unity seeing people come together to help each other raise those up who need to be lifted even when it feels like our government has imploded eating its own tail not doing or saying a damn thing to help. 2017 has also awakened many I know politically and just making sure their voices are being heard.

Here is to 2018 continuing toward healing, progress, a shift overall in attitudes and culture to how women are treated, how immigrants are embraced, how greed is called out and held accountable, how gun violence is addressed finally, How we can rebuild from all the storms destructive paths, and really how we the people can move forward in love away from small minded hate and violence. My heart is full and open and so full of fire ready to keep fighting toward a better future, a future that embraces kindness, fairness and openness. Call me a dreamer but I won’t have it any other way. I always believe in this dream!

Things I was grateful for in 2017:
Travel - Getting to witness totality in Wyoming for the great American solar eclipse of 2017! I loved all of Wyoming the varied landscape spoke to my heart the air felt crisp in my lungs my mind felt greater clarity I was amazed at our countries beauty getting not only the chance to explore all of Wyoming but traveled to South Dakota to see the Black Hills, Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore and the Badlands! I felt a deeper connection to this countries history having stepped foot of the same grounds so many early settlers and natives live/ lived on.

Art - being able to create my personal visions and share them with people has been one my life’s great experiences. My heart is so full when this process comes full circle of art making then sharing. I was fortunate enough to have some wonderful exhibitions including having a booth at Five Points Festival. I felt so proud of that presentation of my work and just felt like I leveled up with my booth display. So grateful to Sarah my booth mate and fellow artist for splitting the booth with me! I also felt pride in standing up for things I believe in politically and using my art to help those in need or to raise up my voice through my visual protests... making the cover page of USA Today to name one of the bits of press I was part of. So proud to be part of the resistance fighting for truth and democracy.

Family and Friends - time spent with all who I cherish just fills my heart with joy and is the priceless memories created and bonds deepened every moment we were given together. I know I am a big sap but it's true :)

Healing and progress going forward away from 2017 struggles both personal and collectively are what 2018 will encompass - this healing progress towards more kindness compassion growth and fruition. I want to hone in on my personal ideas and bring them full circle. I want to keep helping when I can healing wounds and getting stronger and just fill my heart with joy and love feeding my mind and body with soul nourishment for true progress. Shed dead disheartening skin and move into the light float full hearted into a new space and time where more peace and love truly exists.

I Hope 2018 is a year focused on the light, loves & passions of your life! Burn those fires bright lighting our way out of darkness! Let’s get ready to shine ✨ 😘✌🏻❤️#Hello2018 #HappyNewYears #HappyNewYearsEve #2018 #LifeIsOn#LightUp2018 #RiseAndShine ‬

2017 may have been a terrible year for democracy straight out of a dystopian nightmare but it turned out to be a pretty great year for music. It always seems the more upheaval and upset there is in society it fuels creativity and let some gems blossom and shine! We need all the light we can get during the resistance! 2018 is going to be key in the resistance but I digress... here are some albums I really enjoyed hearing this year in no particular order. Also so thrilled to say I photographed 5 of these bands this year! Here is to another year of sonic joy! What new music really got you going this year? Below the album collage are some photos I took from shows I attended this year including the five on this album list as well as some magical shows like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpol :) May be I might blog again sooner than later no promises just doing what feels right at the moment. Art life in the shadows...still resisting and persisting...

Shady Lady

Seems like I am a stranger to this blog some times these days... but have no fear I am just lurking in the shadows still making paintings drawings and other stuff... on top of balancing life and all the messed up things currently going on in the world. I suppose my attention and energy shifted a bit this year with all that is going on politically in the world that I find I am more involved in benefit art shows or protest marches as well as some classic gallery shows for good measure.

Coming up I have the Tax and Science marches which I will be making new signs for both marches. On top of protesting there has been letter writing, phone calls to my reps and I have been also huddling with like minded folk seeing how we can best resist and hopefully affect some kind of positive change.

I know some days it can feel heavy and make you dizzy after all our President is constantly trying to gaslight us and it can feel impossible and what can I do but our voices and actions do matter... I believe we can take care of our selves during this difficult time - go rest take a break, it's exhausting I get that, but do not quit. ALWAYS keep fighting! For truth, peace, beauty, science, nature, love of this planet and equality and decency for all.

I read some where that when geese fly long distances they don't just have one leader but they have many, in fact they all know the way to where they are going so if one gets tired another can lead.

"Flying in a V formation to conserve energy - each bird flies slightly above the bird in front of them, resulting in a reduction of wind resistance. The birds take turns being in the front, falling back when they get tired. This way the geese can fly for a longer time before they must stop flying."

I guess I say this here in hopes to say to you and to me it's ok to feel beat down with so much going on take a break get your wings strong again but don't stop the flight we must keep flying toward a goal of hope and a positive outcome for all. Together we are stronger in this fight.

I guess I wanted to give a little peek at what is filling my days in addition to artwork...and I know it seems I have been a stranger to this blog... I am aiming to change that I still feel like I am learning how to best navigate the web with all the social media sites and new ones popping up I am constantly retraining myself how to manage them all or what the best way to live my digital life will be. So I will document things as best I can even if it's after the fact to share with you and help me remember it all. Our days are so full aren't they? And with that said I will take a deep breath and say to you dream yourselves awake and rest resist persist repeat! XOXO!

Yup that's right I don't have major news to share. Spent the week drawing as always as well as finishing up my 2 handbill pieces for the Upcoming show Handbills of Subversion at MF Gallery on January 20th. I will make a separate post about that show with final images in the show.

So back during the holidays I had a holiday gathering with some friends where I covered my dining room table with drawing paper. After the party was over I loved seeing all my friends drawing and energy left in that space on such during such a happy time. I decided I was going to keep the paper wrapped table and continue to add to it daily during morning, lunch dinner whenever I found myself in there I keep pencils handy and just eat and draw. I always loved drawing on furniture since I was a kid but as a kind of adult I can now go out and buy large rolls of drawing paper which I affix to my dining table and let family , friends and mostly me draw on it! Of course since I am there everyday I dominate the paper. 🎨 🤓 😜

This daily doodle meditative activity proves helpful to just loosen up and clear my mind. This is my doodle meditation therapy and it makes me feel so much better. Drawing on my table daily making a giant collaboration... below are some peeks at my dining room table daily doodle project enjoy. It's not for anything other than my personal joy.

In other news we had a bit of snow here this weekend which made for a cozy time. We headed to our favorite local Mexican restaurant and pretended we were in mexico during the storm :) Then I went home and baked a custard pie which turned out to be yummy.

My personal post mortem review of 2016

2016 was filled with personal growth both creatively, politically, as well as personally. Having spent the year in my sketchbooks I filled over 4 sketchbooks and took part in a handful of special art shows that ended up helping people through the sale of my art donating to help the water protectors at Standing Rock when I took part in the Benefit for Standing Rock at Rogue Space Gallery donating 100% of profits to help the cause to protect water and say no to DAPL. I was also super happy to be part of the group artists that helped raise money for the Boston Children's Hospital when I took part in Future Arts Festival curated by the fabulous Sarah Potter! Through such events I really saw how I could help raise money for things I care about as a way to have a voice in a movement. The movement I always choose is progress, peace and over all positive protections for our planet and environment. Upcoming art shows I am taking part in will benefit the ACLU and Planned Parenthood! Stay tuned for details!

Starting to look back over the year and well basically I drew a lot, this is just a small taste of my creative year I filled over 3 sketchbooks and counting this year. The blue and grayness felt right for all the personal and collective loss we all felt pretty hard this year. I am feeling 2017 has more painting and color in store the ideas are swirling inside me. 2016 was my first venture into working with a manufacturer to produce my own limited edition signed art pin a Weathered Souls Totem

I was also happy to use my art as a way to help people taking part in benefit shows raising money for the Boston Children's hospital and Standing Rock Water Protectors. I plan on continuing this "Artivist" path beginning first thing in the new year hoping to help raise money for the ACLU and Planned Parenthood. ❤ ✊🏻✌🏻 Overall just happy to be on this visual journey.

A cluster of special happy moments I want to hold on from 2016! Friends, Nature, Beauty and Art!

2016 as dark as it was also had it's magical moments amongst so much of the constant barrage of bad news. I personally was so grateful to get to travel to Iceland and see the entire country on a road trip of a life time! I have never seen so much natural varied beauty on one tiny magical country. It was a powerful amazing journey that left me wanting to go back but also in awe of this beautiful planet we live on. 2016 showed me other worlds where beauty knows no words. Where the landscapes are so vast and so varied it leaves you breathless at the incredible sites they offered. It showed me how powerful natures beauty and strength are and we should fight to protect those things. *Stay tuned for a full Iceland blog recap which will be heavy on the photos!

I began the year so full of hope getting my political side energized by the one and only Bernie Sanders... I was feeling the Bern like so many others. He filled me with a hope for the future. He ignited the fire within to fight for a country I want to live in. The shift into dark times with the election of Trump really cut deep into so many of us leaving us asking what can we do how do we cope and navigate this world that seems to be going backwards. For me personally the answer is through my art. Getting more involved in benefit shows to help raise money for organizations and people I believe in.

On a lighter joyful level 2016 gave the gift of music seeing live concerts such as:
The Cure, Jane's Addiction, Gogol Bordello, The Killers, The Specials, King Dude, Zoe Keating, Chrvches and more! I always love seeing live music and getting to see these shows with some amazing people made it that more special! May there always be music in our lives!

2016 was truly a year of great loss for so many of us on so many different levels. Many of my personal heroes and teachers died and friends had close loved ones die, hope died a little during the 2016 election and on election day personally though the fire in my belly to keep pushing for progress and hope is seriously on fire now. This shedding of so many lives lost, this wall of life leaves me feeling exposed and alone to face the world I really have to be my own hero now to continue the creative journey, keep fighting the good fight with truth and beauty without giving into fears,depression and giving up. To keep creating beauty in the world as dark as it seems to be getting this is my responsibility and has been my life's main focus making art. This is my personal strength and how I often times have a voice. I hope we all can find the courage together to stand up and be the things we naturally are with no fear and together we can hold each other up to make our voices stronger for 2017 and on. We need art ,vision ,humor, compassion ,wisdom and really just all the positive parts of humanity to shine bight more than ever! I feel it was always historically a source of light during difficult times and is no different now that will be what helps us through any struggle and opposition.

2016 was filled with so much loss but it also gave so much. It gave me a fire in my belly to make changes to be involved to use my art to help others. To use my art as my voice. To continue to dedicate myself to making my art path and art life. Sharing yourself can be political, it can motivate and inspire others. It can help others. 2016 gave me courage to stand up taller and fight for who I am and the world I want to live in. And most importantly it taught me to enjoy life with those we have now. Love big and dream strong. 2017 I welcome all your obstacles and look forward to the continued journey! Happy to be alive! Rest in peace to all we have lost! I hope to live my life as fully and beautifully as my way to honor you all!

What a beautiful memorial for my first life changing art teacher John Kavalos. We met in the Egyptian wing near the temple of Dendur where we formed a large circle and people just shared their stories it was very moving. We ate edible gold leaf in Johns memory surrounded by statues of gods.

Hello, I'm Angie and I had first met my painting teacher John Kavalos in 1990 at S.A.I. ( The Summer Arts Institute) an immersive five week sleep away program when I was 17. At this gathering at the Met I felt I've come full circle he was the first person who took me to this museum and taught me to pay a penny or whatever I could afford. As a financially poor 17 year old kid he opened the world of art to me it wasn't just a closed off world, I could now be a part of this. He showed me it was possible. I have followed my art path, my art life and I really feel looking back like he was the smart mouth sharp minded ambassador who welcomed me onto this art path that I have been on ever since. Teaching me early on to fucking trust my gut and be honest in my work. He is a feeling now so many I have heard speak at this magical uplifting inspiring memorial carry this feeling with them as well and that is his gift to us. I am forever grateful to this marvelous wonderful teacher and human his generosity forever changed me and so many others. And in his honor I paid $1 (inflation ;)) to get in to the museum.
I'm so inspired seeing how one person can affect so many lives change them become part of them in some way.It was an extremely beautiful moment that made my heart grow wanting to and hoping to touch lives and affect people the way he did even if I could do that at a fraction of his power I would feel a success. Dirt road heart...

On the edge of Summer's start the foliage is swollen with life and the dusty road calls to me, broken down pot-hole filled swampy back roads, littered with abandoned houses...you always call to me like you're calling me home. Magnetically drawn to these places I get such a deep comforting feeling being in them. Having grown up next to abandoned empty homes back on a dirt road wooded swamp dream, these places feel like a memory they are twisted and weird and have dark corners filled with magic and memory ghosts. A red fox appeared before me looked me in the eyes then turned around and trotted down this road like some kind of spirit guide I felt a tugging in my heart and was compelled to follow him but was running out of time and drove back to the roads of the living but a piece of my heart always lives on those dusty roads. I'll be back.

This is chunk of the work I made in 2015 yes there is more but this is a nice chunk to look back over :D Though I regret not including my goat girl painting which was the first painting of 2015 I did. Ah well its around on my sites!

I come and go on here these days for the past few years It is just what it is. I collect my thoughts share art and events as they happen but I am certainly sporadic in my entries. I guess I am sorry if you follow this blog. I would say I would try to be better but really I am just living life and decide at whatever moment to collect my thoughts or simply ramble spill nonsense to clear out my brain. So with that said HAPPY 2016! I ended and began my year by seeing lots of friends who are dear to me. It has felt like the kind of start to a new chapter next phase new year that I wanted. Surrounding my self with positive energy from the people who I care about in this short life was the perfect end and beginning. I hope the year unfolds with more gatherings and fun. It is a cold rainy white out blank nothing day out today that kind of day that gets you down in the middle of winter! No sign of blue skies just this blaring white gray void of frozen dreams. I am in my studio now trying to thaw my brain and get back into some new works I am making I am actually very excited by them just sometimes it takes a bit of mediation on nothing or writing a blog post that will hopefully clear your brain and all distractions of social media or web apps will fall away and I can refocus and paint paint paint. I find that modern day distractions can send me down a rabbit hole losing out on time and some days it can feel like a waste but sometimes you need to just hibernate and wander the web of our collective consciousness...

At the end of 2015 I had wrote this bit I will share here. Just a little life list of sorts... doesn't include everything just fun quick list I spit out this is what it said:

In 2016 I will turn 43 in May - so here is a life list of 43 things I do or try to do or should do more of! Inspired by Woody Guthries classic 'Dream good' list ❤

1. Make even more Art
2. Make a plan and stick to it
3. Brush teeth but floss (that's the key)
4. Take naps
5. Shower enough
6. Eat good — fruit — vegetables — milk sure sure but really enjoy everything including but not limited to cookies - cake - cheese and bacon. ;)
7. Daydream often
8. Play a song a day on my ukulele
9. Wear clothes that make me smile
10. Buy more shoes always
11. Throw out old socks
12. Plan trips then take them.
13. Finish all the great books I started
14. Listen to public radio a lot
15. Spend time with friends & family
16. Keep going
17. Don't let depression creep in
18. Stay gold
19. Keep hoping
20. Dream big
21. Work to live not live to work
22. Spend big on those dreams
23. Keep company with growing brains
24. Absorb knowledge
25. Play & sing & laugh & dance & draw & paint some everyday!

I like making lists ;) here are some more notey notes I wrote just thinking back on my year as well as thinking ahead.

LOOKING BACK in 2015:

2015 looking back and thinking ahead....

1. I Went to Hawaii Big Island & Maui and saw incredible beauty and fell even more in love with this planet of ours!
2. I began to learn how to play the ukulele ( playing and singing songs for myself gives me such great joy!).

3. Had a 3 person Art show in Columbus Ohio at the fabulous Rivet Gallery

4. Did my 1st solo 10x10 booth art fair ( I have done fairs before but not at this size by myself.)

5. Saw a volcano shoot up live lava flow ( Mind expanding incredible experience!)

6. Stayed on a lava field ( Mind expanding incredible experience!) I LOVED my time spent at the Lave Temple near Hilo in the Big Island!

7. Drove the entire road to Hana so much beauty it seems impossible!
8. Saw sunrise at Haleakala felt like Mars!

9. Had art shows in NYC, Brooklyn, Illinois, Ohio and upstate New York

10. Spent time with old and new friends and family making the year and the holidays super special including an ornament swap with some of my favorite work friends :) (yes I have a day job). also not all pictured here just a few highlights.

11. Visited ground zero 9/11 memorial for first time

12. Went to new Whitney
13. Swam in the Atlantic Ocean on the beautiful NJ shore

14. Donated $ to my first political campaign feeling the Bern! (Please let Bernie win 2016!)
15. Saw psychocandy tour with my childhood life long best friend Christina last time we saw them together we were 16 years old. Both times were magical!

16. Saw Bjork live at Kings Theatre gorgeous & sad

17. Had a natural Boulder waterfall built in my garden. dream come true.Great place to meditate sitting on a rock listening to the water roll along the rocks.
18. Started therapy :)
19. Took road trips to upstate NY, Pennsylvania and New Jersey ( highlights: buttermilk falls, Hudson & Beacon NY, Jim Thorpe PA., Wildwood & Asbury Park NJ).
20. Saw a ton of art and music shows including : Frida, King Dude, Chelsea Wolf, Mark Ryden, etc.

21. Went to my first NY Toy fair

22. Grew my hair the longest it's ever been still going for it ;)

23. Spent quality time with mom dad and family
24. Completed several sketchbooks
25. Got my first red car! A red fiat

To do for 2016:
√ Renew passports!!!

Plan trip to Iceland! ( See sun set at midnight).

Pele Painting - it's big size wise so its on the list ;) .

See more friends and family They make me feel centered happy and whole :D

Plan a party to have friends over ( big bday party in May)

Continue to grow update my Art Shop www.angiemason.com/STORE

Working on secret art project for 2017 show more to come on that as it gets closer :D

Explore some new galleries in various states/countries.

Write more. (Pick up on old projects I had started). Feed them!
Begin art book project - start designing and layout. *self publish vs publisher? Still deciding that one. *If you are a publisher and happen to read email me lets talk :D

2016 TABULA RASA! Which means blank slate - and here sits a blank canvas waiting for me ... actually at this moment in time it is no longer blank I greeted the hell out of 2016 jumping straight into my own personal art volcano! Hello, Hello! Earlier this month I sent out an Art update with a bunch of my fall events and shows going on but I decided to also share that info on my blog as well as having a general check in to say hi! I know I know this blog ebbs and flows trying to pick up the pace again and document my art life on here! I find that modern day app based social media spreads me even thinner than I already am as the sole person who is doing all my art stuff, planning things, making and sharing. It’s as a lot for one person to keep up. I try. I really do. But the important thing in the end is to be making stuff and keep active in this art life I chose. FIRST OFF HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

So I have a sprinkling of art shows and events going on this fall I wanted to share them with you! The biggest one is the

Art Star Craft Bazaar - Nov 7&8th

Well that is all for now. I will also say I am trying to take in as much of this lovely fall season and hope you are too! The varied colors of the trees and cooling air mixed with the scent of leaves dying just makes my heart and mind smile and appreciate the beauty and cycle of life. I took the idea of fall even further the other day when I had a bit of a tumble scraped up my leg and bruised my back on a heating pad now but still managed to laugh about it and take a photo of course to remember that goofy moment of getting covered in dead leaves and dirt.

It certainly has been quite some time since I have made a real wordy entry. I guess tonight I am feeling in a writing mood. I will share some life crumbs and keep this post on the personal life side.

Back in April I took a magical mind expanding trip to Hawaii visiting the islands Maui and Big Island you can see my travel photos here on my flickr album. :) While I was there I bought a ukulele and fell in love with learning to play it. I am not at all looking to be anything with this as I am in no way a singer it just simply gives me utter joy when I play and sing songs that I have adored and act like a goofball and basically have a laugh :D

I will start by sharing a couple silly videos of me playing my ukulele which I have been playing now for about 11 weeks! First up the first song I learned on my ukulele was the adventure time theme song lol :) I can do better but my cat made it perfect ❤️ #dayfourplaying

It's summer time and that means it's time for carnival rides so I went over to the local fair and hopped on ye olde rolly coaster and played you all a song... sorta... kinda.. ok not really oh well rides are cool :P PEACE OUT!

I was truly moved by my trip and I am in the middle of making some new volcano inspired works, more on that to come in the future :) for now art process shots are top secret! When I was on big island I had the fortunate magical experience of staying on a lava field with the glow of Pele in the night sky out in the distance. Being able to stand on the brand new earth so primordial was an incredible feeling the energy flowed through me differently there. Another insane thing I was able to witness was Pele shoot her lava up having several explosions while I was on the island and the lava spilled over the crater for the first time in some time! Seeing that hot orange red glow spurting up into the darkness spreading it's heavy hot flow of new earth giving birth to itself it was probably one of the most amazing things I have witnessed in person on this beautiful planet of ours. OK well I will try to do more life posts and poetry posts too as I am writing a lot more these days in my journal/ sketchbooks.
