Happy Saturday!
June often brings heat and exhaustion, and Exodus 17 meets us in exactly that kind of season. Israel was physically thirsty, emotionally frustrated, and spiritually struggling to trust God again. Yet even in their complaining, God continued to provide and protect them. This chapter reminds us that God is faithful in both the dry places and the battles we face.

‼️

Get the background of all the books of the Bible we have read together. -> Click here.

🎧 My Favorite BibleBreakdown Episode This Week>>>

📚 Scripture. 💪

Exodus 17:5–7
“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Walk out in front of the people. Take your staff, the one you used when you struck the water of the Nile, and call some of the elders of Israel to join you. I will stand before you on the rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. Then the people will be able to drink.’ So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out as the elders looked on.”

Observation: Israel quickly forgot the ways God had already provided for them. Their thirst exposed not only physical need but spiritual doubt. God responded to their complaints with mercy instead of abandonment. The rock becoming a source of water points forward to God’s ongoing provision for His people. Later in the chapter, victory over Amalek came as Moses kept his hands raised, showing dependence on God rather than human strength. This chapter teaches us that both our needs and our battles are meant to drive us toward trusting God more deeply.

Application: Bring your needs honestly to God this week, rather than letting frustration lead you away from Him.

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, that You are faithful even when I am tired, discouraged, or struggling to trust. Morgan) This book is incredibly helpful for Christians walking through difficult seasons, uncertainty, or spiritual exhaustion. Morgan takes the story of Israel crossing the Red Sea and draws out practical principles for trusting God when life feels overwhelming. It is deeply pastoral, easy to read, and filled with biblical encouragement rather than shallow positivity. Christians will benefit from its reminder that God often does His greatest work when His people feel trapped and helpless.

✍️ Quote of the Week That Makes You Think

“Burnout happens when we try to give what we do not possess. However, as a Christian, it goes further. They are our spiritual brothers and sisters. Let's talk about it.

Over the years, I have been asked why I openly express support for the Jewish people. In a world filled with political debates, cultural tensions, and endless opinions, some people wonder whether Christians should care about Israel or the Jewish people at all.

Spoiler alert. Here's my answer: I support the Jewish people because I believe the Bible teaches us to do so.

This does not mean that every action of the modern nation of Israel is beyond criticism. No government is perfect. It does mean that Christians should recognize the unique role the Jewish people have played—and continue to play—in God's redemptive plan.

Here are several reasons why I stand with the Jewish people.

1. God Chose Israel for a Special Purpose

The story of redemption begins with God's call of Abraham.

"I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing." (Genesis 12:2)

God chose Abraham and his descendants not because they were the largest or strongest people on earth, but because He had a purpose for them. Through Israel, God would reveal Himself to the world.

The Jewish people were entrusted with a unique calling in history. When we honor that reality, we honor God's sovereign plan.

Key References: Genesis 12:1-3, Deuteronomy 7:6-8

2. God Has Not Forgotten His Promises

One of the clearest teachings in Scripture is that God keeps His promises.

The Apostle Paul addressed this very issue in Romans 9-11. Some questioned whether God had abandoned Israel because many Jews had rejected Jesus as Messiah.

Paul's answer was emphatic:

"Has God rejected his people? By no means!" (Romans 11:1)

Paul goes on to explain that God's covenant purposes for Israel remain significant in His unfolding plan.

If God can abandon Israel, then how can any believer trust His promises? God's faithfulness to Israel reminds us of His faithfulness to all His people.

Key References: Romans 11:1-2, Romans 11:28-29

3. Jesus Was Jewish

This may seem obvious, but it is often forgotten.

Jesus was born into a Jewish family. He worshiped in Jewish synagogues. He celebrated Jewish feasts. He taught from the Jewish Scriptures.

The Messiah did not appear in a vacuum. He came through the nation of Israel exactly as God promised.

When Christians develop contempt for the Jewish people, they forget the heritage of the very Savior they worship.

Key References: Matthew 1:1-17, Luke 2:21-52, John 4:22

4. We Received the Scriptures Through the Jewish People

Every Christian who opens a Bible owes a debt of gratitude to the Jewish people.

Paul wrote:

"To them were entrusted the oracles of God." (Romans 3:2)

God used Jewish prophets, priests, kings, and scribes to preserve His Word through centuries of history.

The Old Testament came through Israel. The apostles who wrote the New Testament were Jewish. Humanly speaking, our faith rests upon foundations God built through the Jewish people.

Key References: Romans 3:1-2, 2 Timothy 3:15

5. The Early Church Was Predominantly Jewish

Sometimes Christians talk about Judaism and Christianity as though they were completely unrelated.

The truth is that the earliest followers of Jesus were Jewish believers who recognized Him as the promised Messiah.

Peter was Jewish. John was Jewish. Matthew was Jewish. Paul was Jewish. Thousands of the earliest Christians were Jewish.

The Church did not replace its Jewish roots; it grew from them.

Key References: Acts 2:41-47, Acts 21:20

6. Christians Are Called to Oppose Antisemitism

Hatred of Jewish people has stained human history for centuries. Sadly, some of that hatred has even come from people claiming the name of Christ. Such prejudice has no place in biblical Christianity. Every person bears the image of God. Every person deserves dignity and respect. Christians should be among the first to oppose antisemitism whenever it appears because it violates the command to love our neighbors.

Key References: Genesis 1:27, Mark 12:31, James 2:1-9

7. We Long for Jewish People to Know Their Messiah

Supporting the Jewish people does not mean abandoning the gospel. As Christians, we believe salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone. The Apostle Paul deeply loved his fellow Jews and desired their salvation.

"My heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved." (Romans 10:1)

True Christian love leads us to pray for Jewish people, not because they are beyond the need for Christ, but because we want them to know the Messiah who came first for them and then for the world.

Key References: Romans 10:1, Romans 1:16

8. We Are Commanded to Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

The psalmist wrote:

"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May they be secure who love you!" (Psalm 122:6)

This verse is not merely about geography. It is a reminder that God's people should pray for peace, stability, and blessing among the people connected to God's redemptive story. Christians should pray for peace in Israel, peace among her neighbors, and ultimately the peace that comes through Jesus Christ.

Key References: Psalm 122:6-9

This Shouldn't Be Required, but Let's Clarify...

Supporting the Jewish people is not the same thing as endorsing every decision made by the modern Israeli government.

Christians can recognize Israel's unique role in Scripture while also acknowledging that every government is accountable before God. Our support is rooted in theology. This is not political.

We stand with the Jewish people because God loves them, because God has used them mightily in history, and because His purposes for them are not yet complete.

Bottom Line.

As a Christian pastor, I support the Jewish people because the Bible teaches me to.

God chose Israel for a unique purpose. Through the Jewish people came the Scriptures, the prophets, the apostles, and ultimately the Messiah Himself. God's faithfulness to Israel reminds us of His faithfulness to every believer.

For that reason, I will continue to pray for the Jewish people, oppose antisemitism wherever it appears, and point everyone—Jew and Gentile alike—to Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.

Hidden Seasons Matter

*This weekly newsletter will share about the Bible Breakdown podcast, things about RLC, and my favorite things from around the web. Happy Saturday!
Not every season feels significant, but Exodus 2 reminds us that God is always preparing something. Moses’ early life is filled with uncertainty and hidden development. What seems like waiting is actually preparation. God is at work long before the calling becomes clear.

‼️

Get the background of all the books of the Bible we have read together. -> Click here.

🎧 My Favorite BibleBreakdown Episode This Week>>>

📚 Scripture. 💪

Exodus 2:23–25 (NLT)
“Years passed, and the king of Egypt died. But the Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God. 24 God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 25 He looked down on the people of Israel and knew it was time to act."

Observation: Moses’ story begins with God’s protection in a dangerous time. He was raised in Pharaoh’s household but identifies with his people. His attempt to act fails, leading to exile. Moses spends years in obscurity before God calls him. Even when God seems silent, He is attentive and preparing His plan.

Application: Trust that God is working in your hidden seasons, even when nothing seems to be happening.

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, that You are working even in the quiet and unseen parts of my life. The message encourages believers to thoughtfully defend their faith while remaining humble and respectful in conversations.

📚 Book Recommendation. Body of Proof: The 7 Best Reasons to Believe in the Resurrection of Jesus. (Jeremiah Johnston) This book presents a compelling, accessible case for the resurrection of Jesus as the foundation of the Christian faith. Jeremiah Johnston draws on historical, archaeological, and textual evidence to give believers confidence that their faith is rooted in reality rather than wishful thinking. It is especially helpful for Christians who want to move beyond surface-level belief and understand why the resurrection is credible and significant. Happy Saturday!
Spring reminds us of growth, and Colossians 1 points us to what true spiritual growth looks like. Paul centers everything on the person and work of Jesus. It calls us to build our lives on Him alone.

‼️

Get the background of all the books of the Bible we have read together. -> Click here.

🎧 My Favorite BibleBreakdown Episode This Week>>>

📚 Scripture. 💪

Colossians 1:15–17 (NLT)
“Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation. 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see- such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else and he holds all creation together."

Observation: This chapter presents one of the clearest pictures of who Jesus is. He is not just a teacher but the Creator and Sustainer of all things. Everything exists through Him and for Him. Paul emphasizes that Jesus is the head of the church and the source of salvation. The mystery of the gospel is that Christ now lives within believers. This truth changes everything about identity and purpose.

Application: Make Jesus the center of your life, not just a part of it.

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, that You are above all things and still choose to dwell in me. That is why I ran away to Tarshish! I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. You are eager to turn back from destroying people.
3 Just kill me now, Lord! I’d rather be dead than alive if what I predicted will not happen.”
4 The Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry about this?”
5 Then Jonah went out to the east side of the city and made a shelter to sit under as he waited to see what would happen to the city.
6 And the Lord God arranged for a leafy plant to grow there, and soon it spread its broad leaves over Jonah’s head, shading him from the sun. This eased his discomfort, and Jonah was very grateful for the plant.
7 But God also arranged for a worm! The next morning at dawn the worm ate through the stem of the plant so that it withered away.
8 And as the sun grew hot, God arranged for a scorching east wind to blow on Jonah. This is debated, but he is definitely not in favor of God's decision. This is likely because his contemporaries (Amos and Hosea) have recently decreed that God will use the Assyrians to bring judgment on Israel. Jonah is possibly seeing God's mercy destroying Israel's hope.

Verse 2.

This is the big reveal of the book of Jonah. Up to now, the reader does not know Jonah's heart. Now they see why Jonah was so unwilling to go to Nineveh. The whole time, he did not share God's mercy for the people of the city.

Jonah uses God's own words as an indictment against Him. By calling God merciful and filled with unfailing love, Jonah is quoting back to God how He has described Himself, and now He would relate to His people.

Verse 3.

Some commentators see this as an embarrassment. Jonah has predicted destruction. If it does not happen because of their repentance, it will make Jonah look like a false prophet.

Verse 4.

The most direct Hebrew translation for God's question is, "Is it right for you to be so deeply angry about this?" God was not questioning his emotions but their depth. The Lord will use this to remind Jonah of what it is like to enjoy something outside of himself and his desires.

Verse 7.

Worm- God causes a worm to destroy the plant by chewing through the stem. The worm and the heat would have quickly destroyed the plant.

Verse 8.

The wind coming out of Arabia would have been hot and strong. Jonah feels compassion for something outside of himself.

Verse 10.

God shows Jonah that the pity he had for the plant is a small piece of what God feels for the nation of Nineveh. The story is left open-ended so we can decide what we would have done. Below are a few reasons why I think he went back into the city:

If Jonah wrote this book, he would not have written it in this way if he had gone back home and not obeyed the Lord. The story ends with a great lesson about God's merciful compassion. He could not have written it if he had not understood the lesson.

There is a tomb dedicated to Jonah in Mosul. Happy Saturday!
As we move further into May, we begin to see how God brings beauty from brokenness. Genesis 45 is a powerful moment where Joseph reveals himself to his brothers. Happy Saturday!
May is often a time of growth, but growth doesn’t always come through clean or easy stories. Genesis 38 is one of the most uncomfortable chapters in Scripture, yet it reminds us that God works through broken people and messy situations. This chapter interrupts Joseph’s story to show that God’s bigger plan is still unfolding. Even when life feels complicated, God is still writing something meaningful.

‼️

Get the background of all the books of the Bible we have read together. -> Click here.

🎧 My Favorite BibleBreakdown Episode This Week>>>

📚 Scripture. 💪

Genesis 38:24–26 (NLT)
“About three months later, Judah was told, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has acted like a prostitute. And now, because of this, she’s pregnant.” “Bring her out, and let her be burned!” Judah demanded. 25 But as they were taking her out to kill her, she sent this message to her father-in-law: “The man who owns these things made me pregnant. Look closely. Whose seal and cord and walking stick are these?” 26 Judah recognized them immediately and said, “She is more righteous than I am, because I didn’t arrange for her to marry my son Shelah.” And Judah never slept with Tamar again."

Observation: This chapter shows how broken human decisions can lead to complicated and painful situations. Judah acts irresponsibly, while Tamar takes bold and risky action to secure her future. Though the situation is morally messy, Tamar is ultimately recognized as acting more righteously than Judah. God’s redemptive plan continues even through flawed people and uncomfortable circumstances. This story later connects to the lineage of Jesus, showing that God redeems even our worst moments. It reminds us that God’s purposes are not stopped by human failure.

Application: Trust that God can work in and through even the most broken parts of your story.

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, that You are not limited by my failures or the messiness of life. Help me trust that You are working even when I don’t understand the situation.

Join Our Facebook Community and Share Your Insights

✍️ My Blog.

Living In Peace Without Staying Silent

Question: How is it possible to live a quiet life without allowing injustice to run wild?

People have always wrestled with overwhelm, distraction, and the feeling that there’s just too much coming at them.

Solomon’s observation is simple. When your eyes and ears are constantly consuming, your soul gets exhausted.

That’s where many of us are living.

So How Do We Find Mental Clarity?

Let me give you some simple, practical ways to start clearing the noise. Nothing complicated. We’re talking about things that actually work if you’ll commit to them.

1. Start Your Day Before the World Gets to You

If the first voice you hear every day is your phone, you’re already behind.

Before email, before texts, before anything else… open your Bible. Even one chapter. Even one passage. Let God set the tone before the world starts pulling at your attention.

Mental clarity starts with spiritual focus.

2. Reduce the Noise on Purpose

Not everything deserves your attention.

You don’t need to know every headline. You don’t need to watch every video. You don’t need to respond to everything immediately.

Try this: pick two or three times a day to check messages and email. That alone will clear more mental space than you think.

Clarity isn’t just about adding good things to your life. It’s also about removing unnecessary ones.

3. Write It Down

One of the biggest reasons our minds feel overwhelmed is because we’re trying to hold everything in our heads.

Don’t. Carry a small notebook. Use your bullet journal. Get things out of your head and onto paper. Tasks, ideas, worries, random things… write them down.

When you write it down, you tell your brain, “You don’t have to carry this anymore.”

4. Create Space for Silence

Most of us are uncomfortable with silence, so we fill every gap: music, podcasts, background noise.

But silence is where clarity begins.

Take 5–10 minutes a day. No phone. No noise. Just sit, pray, and let your mind settle. At first it will feel awkward. Stick with it.

God often speaks in the quiet moments more than chaos.

5. Focus on What Actually Matters Today

A cluttered mind usually comes from trying to do too much at once.

Instead of asking, “What do I need to do this week?” ask, “What actually matters today?”

Pick 3 things. Not 15.

Clarity grows when you give your attention to what matters most instead of everything at once.

6. Feed Your Mind Truth, Not Just Information

There’s a difference. Information fills your head. Truth anchors your soul.

Spend more time in Scripture than in opinions. Let God’s Word shape how you think, not just what you know.

As Paul says in Romans 12:2:

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

It takes time, but works.

Bottom Line

You don’t drift into mental clarity. You fight for it.

In a world that profits off your distraction, clarity becomes a spiritual discipline.

So start small. Open your Bible. Turn down the noise. Write things down. Sit in silence. Focus on what matters.

And trust that as you do, God will begin to steady your mind and settle your heart.

Because clarity isn’t found in having all the answers.

It’s found in walking closely with the One who does.

Merciful One: Jonah 2 (The Messy Journey)

Welcome to the second part of our series, "Merficul One."
Here is today's text:

(Jonah 2:1-10) Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside the fish. 2 He said,
“I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and he answered

sermon notes

merciful one: jonah

Brandon Cannon

Welcome to the second part of our series, "Merficul One."
Here is today's text:

(Jonah 2:1-10) Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside the fish. 2 He said,
“I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and he answered me.
I called to you from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me!

3 You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. Scholars are divided over when Jonah prayed. Did he pray as soon as he hit the water? Did he pray toward the end of the three days? The goal of this chapter is not to give an exact timelines. This is Jonah recounting the overall prayer during his difficult ordeal. My opinion is that these are the thoughts that were rolling through his head the entire time he was conscious.

Verse 2-6: The Situation.

Verse 2.

"I cried out to you... I called to you" While this is a form of Hebrew poetry where the same statement is stated twice, it is also a way to tell the reader how it escalated. One Hebrew word indicates that Jonah prayed to God. The second literally means he screamed. I don't blame him. Jonah is in a fish!

This verse can be seen as the chapter's bottom line. Jonah prayed. God answered. The rest of the chapter is filling in what that encounter was like.

"Land of the Dead."- While some scholars think this is Jonah saying he literally died, most contend this is Jonah saying he felt like he died and had a near-death experience.

Verse 3.

Even though it was the sailors who threw Jonah into the water, Jonah realizes it was all by God's hand. He concedes God is in control.

Verse 4.

This indicates Jonah sees what He has done and realizes God is chastising him. He says he will turn toward the mercy seat in the Temple of God. This was a symbol of fixing your focus upon the Lord and praying to Him. It was not the Temple, but what the Temple represented that was important.

Verse 5-6.

Jonah is continuing to explain what it felt like when he thought he had died.

"roots of the mountains."- Mt. Carmel literally extended to the base of the Mediterranean Sea. Therefore, Jonah is talking about being at the bottom of the Sea.

"Gates lock shut forever"- This is another example of the near-death example. The Bible uses the illustration of Sheol (the underworld) having gates. Jonah says he felt as if he had died and entered the afterlife.

Verse 7-9. God's Restoration.

Verse 7.

As he felt himself dying, his final moments were of the Lord, and Jonah turned his heart to the Lord. He prayed, and the LORD rescued Him.

Verse 8.

Many scholars think Jonah is talking about several things here:

The Israelites- Jonah is writing this to the nation of Israel to describe all that had happened. He is reminding Israel that only the LORD is God.

The sailors- Jonah is remembering how the prayers of the sailors did no good. It was God who controlled the storm.

Nineveh- Some (such as Tim Keller) see this as Jonah not completely repenting. He is saying he still does not see why God would forgive the pagan Ninevites, but he will go anyway.

Verse 9.

It is important to realize that Jonah is promising to worship God with his words AND actions.

He realizes that salvation truly comes only from God. Some scholars use this verse to sum up the entire message of the Bible.

Verse 10. God's Deliverance.

Verse 10.

An unceremonious way to return to the start. While we do not know exactly where the LORD had the fish vomit Jonah back onto land, many think it was back in Joppa.

Another miracle is that the fish kept Jonah until it reached land. The fish could have spit Jonah out in the middle of the sea. The book of Jonah is full of big and little miracles that all point to the greatness of God.

God's Promise:

(Psalm 23:4) Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for YOU ARE CLOSE BESIDE ME.

Resources

To find further sources I am using to study this book, look at the bottom of the overview page in my public commentary.

Commentary on John 2:13-25 - Working Preacher from Luther Seminary

Any attempt to harmonize John’s version of Jesus’ demonstration in the temple in 2:13-22 with the Synoptic accounts (Matthew 21:12-13; Mark 11:15-18; Luke 19:45-46) risks missing John’s theological “take” on this important moment in the life of Jesus. My prayer is it will help you know God better.

Hello friends. Happy Saturday!
Life doesn’t always unfold neatly, and Genesis 30 proves that God still works in messy situations. Family tension, competition, and striving fill this chapter. Yet in the middle of it all, God continues to advance His plan. This reminds us that God’s faithfulness is not dependent on perfect circumstances.

‼️

Get the background of all the books of the Bible we have read together. -> Click here.

🎧 My Favorite BibleBreakdown Episode This Week>>>

📚 Scripture. 💪

Genesis 30:22 (NLT)
“Then Jacob became furious with Rachel. “Am I God?” he asked. “He’s the one who has kept you from having children!”

Observation: Human striving often leads to unnecessary conflict. The family dynamic is marked by comparison and competition. God’s plan continues even through imperfect decisions. Blessing does not always come through human effort but through God’s favor. The story shows how people try to control outcomes instead of trusting God. Yet God remains faithful in the middle of the chaos.

Application: Stop striving for control and trust God to work in your situation, even when it feels messy.

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, that You are faithful even when my life feels complicated and uncertain. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.”

3 But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.

4 But the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart. 5 Fearing for their lives, the desperate sailors shouted to their gods for help and threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship.

But all this time Jonah was sound asleep down in the hold. 6 So the captain went down after him. “How can you sleep at a time like this?” he shouted. “Get up and pray to your god! Maybe he will pay attention to us and spare our lives.”

7 Then the crew cast lots to see which of them had offended the gods and caused the terrible storm. When they did this, the lots identified Jonah as the culprit. 8 “Why has this awful storm come down on us?” they demanded. “Who are you? What is your line of work? What country are you from? What is your nationality?”

9 Jonah answered, “I am a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.” 10 The sailors were terrified when they heard this, for he had already told them he was running away from the Lord. “Oh, why did you do it?” they groaned. 11 And since the storm was getting worse all the time, they asked him, “What should we do to you to stop this storm?”

12 “Throw me into the sea,” Jonah said, “and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.” 13 Instead, the sailors rowed even harder to get the ship to the land. But the stormy sea was too violent for them, and they couldn’t make it. 14 Then they cried out to the Lord, Jonah’s God. “O Lord,” they pleaded, “don’t make us die for this man’s sin. And don’t hold us responsible for his death. O Lord, you have sent this storm upon him for your own good reasons.” 15 Then the sailors picked Jonah up and threw him into the raging sea, and the storm stopped at once! 16 The sailors were awestruck by the Lord’s great power, and they offered him a sacrifice and vowed to serve him. 17 Now the Lord had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.

Jonah Overview - Brandon’s Public Commentary

Jonah Overview - Brandon’s Public Commentary

Brandon's Public Commentary

Jonah 01: The Beauty of Salvation

The opening moments set a clear promise: we’re breaking down Jonah one chapter at a time, not as a children’s tale about a whale, but as a portrait of God’s mercy at war with human bias. It is read every year on the Day of Atonement as a reminder of our need for mercy and that God will provide it. The book of Jonah is also thought by many to be the most humorous book of the Old Testament. It is intended to be read with moments of satire in mind. We are supposed to be amazed by Jonah's stubbornness and the situations he finds himself in, while God remains patient and merciful.

Today's Commentary.

Verse 1-3: The Self-Centered Prophet.

Verse 1.

The original Hebrew begins with the word for "and." This is intended to seem as though we are picking up in the middle of a story. Since the book of Jonah is often praised for its beautiful construction, its wording is not accidental. The goal is for this to be a fast-paced story.

Jonah is also talked about in 2 Kings. He was, apparently, a central figure in the kingdom at the time. He was probably trained by Elisha and prophesied prosperity over the kingdom.

Verse 2.

The Hebrew way of saying "Get up" denotes doing so right away.

"Great city" seems to indicate its prominence, but Nineveh was also massive. Some think it might have been the largest city in the world at the time.

Wicked- The people of Assyria were extremely wicked. They were known for their brutality, including making their conquered army carry the heads of their families on poles as a form of shame.

Verse 3.

Port of Joppa- This was only about 50 miles away from Jerusalem and a major port town.

Tarshish- While it is not certain exactly where this is, Tarshish was on the other side of the sea. It was literally the furthest point on the map for the people of Israel at the time. This is the Bible saying he was going in as far as he could in the opposite direction.

"Escape the presence of the Lord"- This means Jonah was planning to quit being a prophet. This was him resigning and leaving the temple. He is likely not thinking he can escape God but escape the responsibility of God's decree.

Verse 4-16: The Storm.

Verse 4-5.

"powerful wind"- storms in the Mediterranean Sea could have winds up to 90 mph. These are hurricane-force winds.

"fearing for their lives"- For the sailors to become afraid, it must have been a bigger storm than they were used to seeing. This made them begin to think there was something supernatural occurring.

"threw over cargo"- This shows how desperate they were. The cargo was how they made a profit on these voyages. To throw over the cargo was to lose the profits.

"Asleep"- Many scholars have differing opinions on what to make of this. The main thing is to see the book of Jonah engaging in satire again. While the paganistic sailors are fearing for their lives, the "man of God" is asleep.

Verse 6.

They realized something supernatural was happening and were polytheistic. In their culture, any number of gods could be upset and cast judgment on them. Therefore, their way of fixing the problem was to pray until they found the right one. This is another way of showing the absurdity of what is happening.

Verse 7-8.

Casting lots was a common way of figuring out what God might be saying. The hope was that God would cause the dice to fall the way He saw fit.

Verse 9-11.

"I am a Hebrew"- Hebrews were the main way the Jewish people were known by Gentiles.

"I worship the LORD."- LORD = Yahweh. My prayer is it will help you know God better.

Hello friends. Happy Saturday!
As we reflect on Easter, Genesis 22 gives us one of the clearest pictures of sacrificial faith in the Old Testament. Abraham is asked to trust God in a way that stretches everything he believes. This chapter points forward to a greater sacrifice that God Himself would provide. It reminds us that real faith is revealed when it is tested.

‼️

Get the background of all the books of the Bible we have read together. -> Click here.

🎧 My Favorite BibleBreakdown Episode This Week>>>

📚 Scripture. 💪

Genesis 22:8-12 (NLT)
“God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. And they both walked on together.
9 When they arrived at the place where God had told him to go, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied his son, Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. 10 And Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice. 11 At that moment the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”
“Yes,” Abraham replied. “Here I am!”
12 “Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said. “Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.”

Observation: God sometimes tests faith to reveal what is truly in our hearts. Abraham’s obedience shows trust beyond understanding. His statement that God would provide reveals deep confidence in God’s character. The provision of the ram points to God as the ultimate provider. This story foreshadows Christ as the substitute sacrifice. Faith is not proven in comfort but in surrender.

Application: Trust God with what matters most to you, believing He is both good and faithful.

Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for being the ultimate provision for my greatest need. Help me trust You fully, even when obedience is difficult and costly.

Join Our Facebook Community and Share Your Insights

✍️ My Blog.

Did Jesus Fulfill 300 Old Testament Prophecies?

Question: “Pastor, recently you said that Jesus fulfilled over 300 prophecies in the OT. It focuses on how to live skillfully in everyday life by applying God’s truth to real-world situations. Much of the book contrasts wisdom and foolishness, showing the consequences of each path. Wisdom is presented not just as knowledge, but as a way of life rooted in the fear of the Lord. The first nine chapters emphasize the value of wisdom through extended teachings, while the later chapters contain shorter, memorable sayings. Proverbs addresses topics like speech, relationships, work ethic, integrity, and decision-making. The book also personifies wisdom as a voice calling people to walk in righteousness. It serves as the worship book of ancient Israel and continues to shape the worship life of believers today. The Psalms include praise, lament, thanksgiving, wisdom, and royal themes that guide both personal devotion and corporate worship. Many psalms were written during key moments in Israel’s history, reflecting both triumph and suffering. The book is structured into five sections, mirroring the five books of the Law. Throughout the Psalms, God is revealed as sovereign, faithful, just, and near to His people. The Psalms teach us how to pray honestly, worship deeply, and trust God fully. Ultimately, the Psalms point forward to a coming King and Savior, fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

🔍 Things to Notice

The wide range of emotions — joy, anger, fear, doubt, and hope are all expressed honestly before God

The different types of Psalms — praise, lament, thanksgiving, royal, wisdom, and imprecatory Psalms

The parallelism in Hebrew poetry — ideas are often repeated, contrasted, or expanded in the next line

The frequent use of imagery and metaphors (shepherd, rock, fortress, refuge, light) to describe God

The structure of the book into five distinct sections (Books 1–5), similar to the Torah

The recurring pattern of lament turning into praise

The emphasis on God’s covenant faithfulness even when people fail

The importance of music and worship — many Psalms were written to be sung

The presence of titles/superscriptions that give historical or musical context (e.g., “A Psalm of David”)

The way Psalms reflect real historical moments in Israel’s story (especially in David’s life)

The strong focus on God’s kingship over all nations, not just Israel

The repeated contrast between the righteous and the wicked (especially in wisdom Psalms)

The central role of God’s Word (especially Psalm 119)

The Messianic Psalms that prophetically point to Jesus

The honest expression of struggle and doubt without losing faith

The use of Psalms as both personal devotion and corporate worship

The call to remember what God has done in the past as fuel for present trust

The global vision — calls for all nations and all creation to worship God

The expectation that God will bring justice and ultimate restoration

The way the book ends with an explosion of praise (Psalms 146–150)

🙏 Jesus in this Book

(Every book reveals the glory of God, displayed in Christ Jesus)

Jesus as King (Psalm 2) – The Anointed One who rules the nations

Jesus as Shepherd (Psalm 23) – The One who leads and cares for His people

Jesus as Suffering Savior (Psalm 22) – Foreshadowing the crucifixion

Jesus as Righteous One (Psalm 1) – The only perfectly obedient man

Jesus as Son of God (Psalm 2:7) – Declared divine and eternal

Jesus as High Priest (Psalm 110) – A priest forever in the order of Melchizedek

Jesus as Cornerstone (Psalm 118:22) – Rejected but chosen by God

Jesus as Judge (Psalm 96, 98) – The One who will judge the world in righteousness

Jesus as Light of Salvation (Psalm 27) – The source of hope and security

Jesus as Redeemer (Psalm 49) – The One who rescues from death

👀 Themes

Worship and praise

God’s sovereignty and kingship

Lament and suffering

Trust in God

God’s faithfulness

Repentance and forgiveness

Justice and righteousness

The Word of God (especially Psalm 119)

The Messiah and future hope

Thanksgiving and gratitude

😀 Who?

Who wrote it?

Author: Primarily David (about 73 Psalms)

Also written by:AsaphThe Sons of KorahSolomonMoses (Psalm 90)Heman and EthanSome Psalms are anonymous

🪧 Where/When?

Where and When are we?

Most of the Psalms were written in or around the nation of Israel.
