Well, it's been a great 4 years, but I'm not going to be a part of the newer, trimmed-down version of Drawger. I got my pink slip last night. There are no hard feelings on my part... heck, I'm happy to have remained as long as I have. Drawger is chock-full of so much great talent. It was an honor to belong to a group of people that I have so admired over the years.

I have a new blog set up at illobook. You can check me out there and say hello.

I leave you with three of my most recent jobs. One for The Utne Reader, another for The Boston Globe, and lastly a gig poster for a local band. Best of luck to those who will remain at Drawger and to those who will be moving on. See you around!

I found this Holiday magazine at a local antique store last summer. My intention was to post it just before Thanksgiving, but it slipped my mind. I thought it was a great image and wanted to share.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

Also, does anyone know who the illustrator is for this playing card? I found it on the ground at a gas station over the holiday. Looks very Golden Bookish. I'd like to find the whole deck now!

CD Release Party part 2

I drove down to Columbia, SC for the Original Friend release party this weekend. It was a great turn out and loads of fun. Lunch Money played the CD from start to finish and the kids (and adults) loved it! Afterward, the band and I signed CDs and posters.

The CD will be available for purchase on Lunch Money’s website this Tuesday. iTunes downloads will also be available… but you don’t get the fancy-schmancy packaging.

Here are the remaining CD panels and some of my favorite illustrations from the booklet. Also, a video tour of the CD!

This Saturday, November 20th, is the release date of Lunch Money's 3rd album, Original Friend. This is the second album I've illustrated and designed for them. I put a lot of work into it and it was great fun. I'll reveal the rest of the panels and booklet illustrations after it's officially out. We want to keep it a surprise.

To celebrate the the album's release, Lunch Money is performing the new alubum from start to finish at the Children's Room (Richland County Public Library), November 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in Columbia, SC. I created a limited-edition, 2-color silkscreen poster as a free giveaway. Bring yo kids, bring yo wife, bring yo husbands too... cuz they singin' for everybody!

A New Approach

I've worked the same way for years now. I sketch. I tighten sketch. I scan sketch. I place sketch in illustrator and digitally trace node to node, add colors and textures until finish. While I love working in illustrator, I missed the nuances you get with physical pencil or pen to paper. So, I've been experimenting.

I've been using a sweet brush pen in my sketchbooks for about a year now. Learning how to us it, how to hold it, how much pressure to apply. I'm no master, but I'm getting the hang of it. In my free time I work on a little graphic novel idea. I've been inking it with my brush pen, and using black colored pencil to add shading.

So, lately I'm taking what I'm learning from my little graphic novel and combining that with my typical illustrator/texture style. It's exciting to discover new techniques. And even more exciting using those new techniques for paying jobs!
