It might be frightening to think of needing an even bigger bra but you will need to be prepared for your breasts to enlarge during and after pregnancy.

Here are a few things to consider when thinking about buying a nursing bra for large breasts:

1. Once your baby has been born, your rib cage will return to it’s pre-pregnancy size. The best time to have a fitting for a nursing bra is about 36 weeks.
2. Ensure the bra is fitted on its loosest fitting to allow for the back to reduce in size, and for wash and wear. This will ensure the bra can be tightened to make it firm, so that it is  supporting the breasts.
3. Ensure there is space in the top of the cup for when the milk ‘comes in’.
4. Check the top of the cup is not pressing on the breast. The fuller the breast, the higher the cup will need to be on the breast.
5. Check under the arms. If the cup is too high, it will cause discomfort and chaffing. If it is too low it will press into the breast tissue and milk ducts situated under the arm.

I couldn’t agreed more that we should all try breaking the rules occasionally and just wear whatever  suits us or our mood.

Lets face the most obvious problem with the majority of fashion rules for plus-size women: By and large, most of the rules relating to plus-size women are designed to encourage whatever insecurities they may have and shame them into hiding their body, rather than empowering ladies to actually just wear whatever they want to wear! Needless to say, Im not really a fan of the former school of thought. Sure, not many women want to look bigger though I guess size-two style bloggers in harem pants missed that memo, but fashion-forward mentalities are rarely about flattering ones body, but rather about making a stylistic statement. So, why cant that be a part of dressing plus-size bodies, too? I say they can be.

The Edinburgh Evening News has just announced that Edinburgh College of Art has become the first fashion school in the UK to introduce size 18 plus size mannequins to train the designers of the future. So, there is hope yet that plus size fashion will become part of the mainstream providing the latest styles and fashions. The move to using plus size mannequins at Edinburgh College of Art has been backed by the All Walks Centre for Diversity project. The step towards using plus size mannequins is in recognition of the fact that women are becoming curvier and more relaxed with fuller figures. ‘ECA students have already designed regular and plus-sized dresses for a variety of live models to be unveiled at the official campaign launch in London this week and the college will soon receive its new mannequins.’ Caryn Franklin, the founder of All Walks hope the move will encourage new designers to become more versatile in creating clothes for all sizes. ‘Co-founder Debra Bourne told the Evening News: “With many young designers, people cannot fit their arm into the armhole. This is not just anti-size zero.”

I felt compelled to comment on a recent online store I stumbled across, which gives out some very mixed messages.  I won’t name the store, as sadly, it’s far from unique.  Why is it that the world of retail now offers beautiful underwear in large sizes, but continues to display it on skinny, often small breasted, women.

The message is great: celebrate your body, whatever the size.  The execution is very dubious, with photographs of stick-like girls in underwear that is obviously not large.

Curvaceous models are becoming more widely used, as this article in The Guardian illustrates.  The general public is not an average size 0 so why do we have size 0 women modelling our clothes?  Advertisers are responsible for idealising the skinny model and it’s about time this changed.  How can they expect us take them seriously when they insult larger women by failing to use large models?

An interesting, if a little gross, article about bra buying in Britain.  I wonder what a comparative study of the US would find!  I have to say though that over washing a bra does reduce it’s lifespan and can make it discolour more quickly, so I wouldn’t recommend washing after every wear, as some of my friends do.  On the other hand don’t leave it too long as a build up of bacteria wont help you or your bra.

While white is the most popular choice of bra colour, the findings also suggest that the contents of women’s smalls drawers are suffering aesthetically from the lack of washing.

It’s a question many of us could ask. More than 45 million Americans now belong to a health club, up from 23 million in 1993. We spend some $19 billion a year on gym memberships. Of course, some people join and never go. Still, as one major study — the Minnesota Heart Survey — found, more of us at least say we exercise regularly. The survey ran from 1980, when only 47% of respondents said they engaged in regular exercise, to 2000, when the figure had grown to 57%.

And yet obesity figures have risen dramatically in the same period: a third of Americans are obese, and another third count as overweight by the Federal Government’s definition. Yes, it’s entirely possible that those of us who regularly go to the gym would weigh even more if we exercised less. But like many other people, I get hungry after I exercise, so I often eat more on the days I work out than on the days I don’t. Could exercise actually be keeping me from losing weight?

Rebecca Reynolds used to find that boys talked to her breasts and not her face. She hated their size (36G), and, to make matters worse, they were causing her excruciating back pain. She longed for a smaller bust – and she is far from alone. According to research by Marks & Spencer and, more recently, bra manufacturer Bravissimo, breasts in Britain are getting bigger. Because of changes in diet and, it is thought, increased use of the pill, over the past 10 years the average bra size of the British woman has increased from a 34B to a buxom 36C or D; almost a third of British women now wear a D cup or larger.

If you’re struggling to know how to show your large breasts off to their best advantage, you would benefit from following  some useful tips for ‘top-heavy’ dressing.  There are ways and means of making the most of what you have with the clever use of pattern, shape and shade.  Simple advice, like avoiding tapered legs and wide lapels can make all the difference.

The reason seems to be, simply that they’re difficult to make.  It can take up to two years with a team of two or three designers working on it full-time to reach the perfect design and achieve enough support.

The shelf bra is a specialist bra with half cups that finish just below the nipple, leaving most of the breast exposed.  I would advise being selective about the occasion you choose to wear this bra!

Shelf bras, also known as platform or demi-cup in the UK, originated in 1940s America.  The ‘shelf’ refers to the part of the bra below the breasts which provides support and horizontal lift.  The bra enhances the appearance of the cleavage. Some have added support provided by under-wiring, which would probably suit women with large breasts.

Buying bikinis and swimsuits can be a minefield for the well endowed but with a few pointers you can look fantastic.

Follow these tips to choosing the right bikini for large breasts:

• Quality material is vital and look out for lycra which is great for offering support.
• Underwire bikinis or swimsuits can be bought in the correct cup size.
• Neckline is important with halter-necks providing support and enhancing cleavage.  V necks are also flattering.

A common mistake made by women who have fuller figures is to choose the bra they like the look of and try to adjust their size to fit the bra. It’s tempting if you can’t find the bra you like in the right cup size, to buy a bra with a bigger band width in the hope that it will fit. I’m all for making the most of what you have and being proud of your large breasts but there are times when you may want to draw attention away from your bosom.  For instance if you’re going to an interview or an important business meeting and you’d like to make sure people are paying attention to what you’re saying rather than your physical assets.

The minimizer bra is perfect for just such an occasion and is designed to achieve a visual reduction in your breast size by one or two cup sizes.  These bras are usually underwired and seamless with larger than usual straps.  Minimizer bras come in a variety styles and sizes to suit your individual preference but it’s important to get the right fit or you could find them pretty uncomfortable as they offer less stretch and flexibility than usual bras.

Oprah’s cites her favourite bra as the Le Mystere minimizer so if they’re good enough for Oprah…

• Always try your new bra on with clothes over to get a true picture of how it affects your body shape.
• Make sure the straps are not too tiny (but they don’t need to be inches wide either).
• Find a bra that provides support from the back strap and around the sides so that your shoulders are not taking all the strain.
• Choose the size that fastens on the tightest  hook to allow for the bra to stretch with wear.
• The underwire should not rest on the breast. If it does, it’s too small.
• If you’re breasts appear to bulge from any part of the bra, it’s too small.
