Jeff White knew he was nearing 400 high-school coaching wins. But another milestone snuck up on him somewhat.
When his Jackson County volleyball team beat East Jackson last Tuesday (Sept. 10), it gave him 391 high-school coaching victories. Combined with 109 college-coaching wins, he had secured his 500th career coaching victory.
...

As much as Jeff White loathes losing, the Jackson County coach believes there’s something to be said for a well-timed loss.
That loss came Saturday (Sept. 7) when the Panthers fell to rival East Jackson in three sets in a non-area match. The Panthers turned around less than 72 hours later and beat East Jackson 25-17, 25-14 Tuesday ...

The Jackson County softball team kept pace in the Region 8-AAA race with a lopsided road win.
Sara Beth Allen hit a two-run home run, Abigail Allen went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Whitney Hulsey went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in an 11-2 win over Monroe Area Tuesday (Sept. 10) in five innings. Jordan Price also enjoyed a big day at the ...

Jackson County’s defense continues to play well, but its offense got into the act last week, too, with a season-high 31-point performance.
Coach Rich McWhorter hopes putting some points on the board last Friday (Sept. 6) gives his team confidence heading into a non-region tilt this Friday (Sept. 13) at 7:30 p.m. at Class AAAAAA ...

After months of wrangling, the Braselton Town Council approved Chateau Elan's controversial plans to build 68 townhomes and 55 single-family homes. The action came at the council's meeting Sept. 9.

The town's planning board had previously twice recommended denial of Chateau Elan's request to amend its master plan and for variances from several town development codes.
Hoschton residents are fed up with continued delays on a trash pickup contract.

Several citizens spoke about the issue at the Hoschton City Council meeting Sept. 5. The city’s garbage pickup contract has been left unresolved since April. (An interim company was brought in for trash pickup in the meantime.)

City administrator Dale Hall said they’re still working on a new request for proposals (RFP) for the city’s trash pickup.

“It’s a lot deeper than you might consider this because the financial implications of this are a concern,” Hall said.

He added there are cost implications for a number of details, from the color of the bins and pickup date, to the ownership of the cans (city vs. garbage company). Hall said the original RFP did not address those issues.

“And the bids that came back were apples and oranges,” he said. “We couldn’t justify that.”

He said the new bid requests will be “locked-down tight” and anticipates having the information ready for the council in the next week or two.
UPDATE

Hoschton Mayor Theresa Kenerly and mayor pro-tem Jim Cleveland filed motions in superior cout late Friday, Sept. 6, to stop the recall move against them.

The filings will stop the clock on the gathering of signatures to petition for a recall vote until a judge rules on the merits of the accusations on which the recall is based.

No hearing date has been set.

EARLIER

Efforts to recall two Hoschton elected officials are moving forward.

The Jackson County Board of Elections approved Sept. 6 the legal sufficiency of the applications for recall petitions against Hoschton Mayor Theresa Kenerly and Mayor Pro Tem Jim Cleveland.

Those applications were submitted on Tuesday, Sept. 3, with each application having over the required 100 signatures.

Organizers of the effort now have 30 days to complete the next step — retrieving signatures of 30-percent of Hoschton’s registered voters — before a recall election can be called.

But that timeline could change if Kenerly and Cleveland challenge the effort in superior court. (They have challenged the effort in court.)

That action will stop the recall timeline against them until the court decisions are made.

The fate of a controversial residential development at Chateau Elan could be decided next week.

Chateau Elan Resorts, LLC's request for a master plan change for 48 acres near the iconic winery is slated to go before the Braselton Town Council on Sept. 5. No public hearing will be held since the request has already gone before the council. Council members could take action on the request at its Sept. 9 meeting.

Developers want to construct 68 townhouses, along with 55 detached, single-family units on the property. The majority of those townhouses are proposed in a section of the existing vineyards in front of the winery. A mix of townhouses and detached single-family units are also planned on the existing Par 3 golf course.
Organizers seeking to recall two Hoschton City Council members have officially initiated the effort.

The issue started after alleged racial comments made by the town's mayor Theresa Kenerly and mayor pro tem Jim Cleveland. Kenerly is accused of pulling the application of a candidate for city administrator because he is black. Meanwhile, Cleveland defended Kenerly in a news article and voiced his disapproval of interracial marriage.

After filing an application last week, the recall group has been collecting signatures of registered voters in Hoschton. According to Pete Fuller, they've collected the required 100 signatures for this first round, but plan to continue gathering additional signatures to "add padding and show further support."
