About the Musicians:
Like the rock-star chefs who combine their high culinary art skills with farmer traditions of pickling, curing, and cheese-making or the hipster brew masters getting all scientific about beer, Amy Bormet, Sonja Sofia, and Sarah Fridrich are three women who represent a new generation of traditionally-trained (jazz & classical) musicians pushing the bounds of the pop, rock and folk.

These woman are not just singer-songwriters. They are innovative composer-performers who will draw you in with their songstress warmth, as much as they will expand your listening palate and challenge your mind. They tell stories with striking melodies and unique voices soaked in intricate harmonies, complex rhythms and unexpected chord progressions.

By infusing a simple well-crafted song ala Bonnie Raitt with savory and tangy flavors of jazz or classical (ala Monk, Coltrane, or Tchaikovsky) these women create sonic experiences that are equal parts puzzle and comfort, beauty and warning.

a personal note: I have been living, teaching and performing ‘inside the beltway’ for over 10 years now, and I’ve gotten to know many of the musicians and community members that make up the Takoma Park / Silver Spring area of Montgomery County.

There was a time when I felt too “small” to get a chance to perform at the Folk Festival. So, it means a LOT to me that the festival folks are having me back this year!

And, this time, I’ll get to bring along my fabulous band-on-tour partner - drummer Kirk Kubicek - as well as two of my dear friends, and “rockgrl backup singers” - Amy Mulbach and Sarah Gilberg.

To all my friends and students, especially, in the Silver Spring / Takoma Park world - I hope to see your smiling faces under the tent!

Some people wouldn’t bother going to the “remote” regions of New England on a music tour, though many great musicians do all the time, but we’ll never turn down an opportunity to play music for our friends in “vacationland”! Last year was blueberry picking and swimming on a private lake. This year included an afternoon of sailing out of Portland’s harbor. Ocean, islands, and I saw a seal (!), which I mistook for a chocolate Labrador retriever, at first.

MARRIAGE WTF?!? SHOW TRAVELS TO BROOKLYN, NY

Newlywed avant-pop piano rocker Ms. Fridrich (DC) and happily married vaudeville-folk troubadours The Bengsons (NY&MA) bring their “Marriage WTF?!?” show to Brooklyn on Saturday, August 18th, 2012. Please join them at The Way Station, on Washington Ave in Prospect Heights, for this musical event to fête and deconstruct the curious act of “wedlock”. The live musical performance will include songs by the newlywed rocker Ms. Fridrich, with assistance from her wunderkind drummer Kirk Kubicek, reflecting the fears and aspirations associated with entering a formal union for life. Counter arguments will be submitted by happy couple The Bengsons’, whose soaring vocals, raw honest lyrics, and we’re-so-in-love-anyway harmonies will convince even the most incredulous amongst us.

French-speaking Ottawan Gillian Kirkland and D.C. local art-pop piano rocker Sarah Fridrich first met at a nerdy, philosopher college in Santa Fe, New Mexico. After discovering musical passions, they each returned to their hometowns, picked up favorite instruments, and honed their jazz, vocal, and compositional skills. Their reunion will bring Kirkland’s opera voice and accordion neo-cabaret sound together with Ms. Fridrich’s arty piano-rock style to interpret songs from, and offer original works inspired by, American and French songbirds Edith Piaf, Nina Simone, and Eva Cassidy.
