The last time our older daughter was in town she used our studio to work on a project. After she left, I found a roll of paper she had been using....wonderful wonderful magical paper.

So far I've made three lamps.

And used some for my fabric designs.

Looks like I owe someone a new roll of paper!

Braxton and I have been blogging for almost two years now. With over 500 posts, representing hours and hours of work (and loving every minute of it!), it's time for a break.

There have been a few things I have been neglecting of late....our business, our house, my devotion to all things culinary, and many more I won't mention here.

We will continue to check in from time to time, mostly for the purposes of posting our progress on our design business, sometimes to share a wonderful photo, or just to say "hi".

ORGANIZE HAPPINESS

CLUTTER MAKES US CRANKY!

There have been quite a few studies lately equating a well organized house, car and office with happiness. Our daily lives are busy, noisy and messy at times, and things, lots of things, happen over which we have little control, which is why most of us crave control over our home environments. Clutter, which is out of control, makes us cranky. I've read that people who drive to work in a messy car arrive in a worse mood than their tidier co-workers. It makes perfect sense that a clean, quiet, well organized home will lift our mood.

Let's talk about organization...

When Braxton and I decided to redecorate our house one of the goals was to get rid of things we either didn't use anymore or we were tired of looking at, the worst offenders were the piles and piles of books...they were everywhere, on practically every surface, even under the sofa!

We live in a city with an enviable library system and a shiny new branch right in our neighborhood...why have so many books at home when I could borrow them anytime from the library? I did the unthinkable and gave away most of my books (after shuffling through each one to make certain there were no forgotten love letters or hundred dollar bills, because I'm optimistic like that).
I took boxes of novels to Goodwill, keeping only my absolute faves. I kept all of the design books and cookbooks, and most of the spiritual/well being books, and they all now fit nicely in two book cases and are no longer all over the house. Happy indeed!

Now, I'm about to say something crazy.....American homes have too much storage space. No, I didn't hit my head, I really mean it. When we have access to extra space, such as attics, basements, and garages, we store stuff in them....for ever. I know because I do it too! Chances are, if something is packed in a sealed cardboard box in your attic year after year, you probably don't need it, but someone else may. Think about it.*

Speaking of organizing....don't. Consider throwing (or giving) it away instead. We all, my self included, have been overwhelmed by our own clutter, and thought, I really need to organize this stuff, when what we really need to do is get rid of it. Every time I fill up a box for Goodwill, or fill up my trash can, it feels great. Don't waste your time organizing something that you will never use.

According to an article I read (somewhere!) the biggest culprit for clutter is...paper. If you are holding on to old magazines (a big problem for me) or newspaper clippings, you're probably keeping something which can easily be found on the Internet. Throw that stuff away, and feel better!

*I'm sorry if that sounded a little preachy.

Just in case you are thinking I live in an impeccably organized house...allow me to destroy your illusions... but I'm working toward it and it feels so....happy!

HAPPY DECOR

COME ON - GET HAPPY!

One of the things we love most here at braxton and yancey, is saturated happy color!
But then you knew that, right?
I would have no problem naming five, ten,or even hundreds of things that make me happy, but I do know that color would be near the top of every list.
We love to wear color, talk about color, design colorful things and decorate in layers of happy color.

YELLOW is considered a high energy color, making people feel creative and cheerful..

Red is the color of love and celebration.

The color green reminds us of nature and encourages nurturing.

Blue is mysterious and fresh.

Orange is exotic and exciting.

Most people agree that bright colors are the "happiest".

You said it, Mr. Sinatra!

OUTDOOR PRIVACY SCREENS

MODERN SCREEN BLOCK PRIVACY SCREENS AND MORE

I mentioned yesterday that our landscaping was in need of an overhaul. While our extremely overgrown yard is not ideal, one thing is does provide is privacy, and Braxton and I really really love our privacy.

We have super nice neighbors, we sure do, but I don't want to engage in a conversation every time I go into the back yard...sometimes I just want to read a magazine on the patio in peace, or have a moonlit cocktail with my husband, sometimes I even work out side. Ahhhh privacy!

If we do decide to cut back (or down) some of our trees and shrubs we will have to replace some of them with a privacy screen.

It's a holiday weekend here in the States...B. and I will be hanging out on the patio (in private!), going for a hike on the Parkway, and perhaps taking in a movie...who's seen Dark Shadows?

MODERN LANDSCAPING

MODERN LANDSCAPING - WHEN STYLES COLLIDE

As much as I would love to live in a modern house...we don't. Ours was originally a log cabin built over 100 yrs. ago, renovated in the early 20th century then again in the early 1970's, then once again (by us) in the 90's. When we moved here the yard was fairly simple...a maple or two...a fruit tree here and there...simple shrubbery around the house...and lots of grass.
Fifteen (or so) years ago, we decided to "spruce up" the place by planting lots of trees, a circle of bushes in the back yard, a lovely pear tree in the front yard, and a hedge of holly bushes around our property. Now, the whole thing is waaay over grown, as in, about to rise up and choke us to death.
I really really want modern landscaping this time! The question is...will modern landscaping seem out of place with our simple cottage?

I actually could see something like this working with our house (minus the balls) . The simplicity of the design allows for the house to be the focal point.

The slope of our yard would make this pretty impossible.

Love the gravel/stone driveway...this we could do!

Have you noticed that almost every one of these yards is landscaped with rock and/or stones?

Notice the privacy screen on the right? We'll talk about those tomorrow.

Done! I am definitely incorporating some river rocks into our new landscaping...and stepping stones. Are you listening Braxton?

OPEN AIR HOUSES

HOUSES AND ROOMS THAT OPEN TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS!

Apparently there are places on this earth without bugs...or snakes, or small furry rodents, or heat and humidity that can turn your bones to pudding in the amount of time it takes to walk to the mailbox, or barking dogs, crime or air pollution. None of these places are Virginia.
I love the idea of an open air house, or even a single open air room. Braxton and I are enjoying every possible minute on our patio these days because the oppressive heat and humidity will soon be here, along with mosquitos big as wasps.
I've found you some fabulous pics of open air dwellings, some seem to be with out walls or windows, some can obviously be closed up when necessary. All are dreamy. Enjoy!

ATRIUMS, BREEZEWAYS AND COURTYARDS

the abc's of indoor/outdoor living

When I began this post I thought I understood the difference between an atrium, breezeway and courtyard, turns out these words are pretty much interchangeable. I'm pretty sure an architect or contractor could set me straight on the subject, but for our purposes, let's stick with the following loosey/goosey definitions.

An atrium is a large open space within a building usually with a glass roof and sometimes glass walls.
A breezeway is similar to a hallway, but without walls, which allows you to walk between buildings without being exposed to the elements.
A courtyard is an open space, surrounded by a building on three or four sides, with no roof.

Whichever word you choose, atriums, breezeways and courtyards, are the architectural equivalent of paradise...allowing for the enjoyment of nature without a loss of privacy.

INDOOR/OUTDOOR INSPIRATION

INSPIRED BY NATURE - INSIDE AND OUT

Braxton and I spent a lot of time on our patio last weekend. The weather was perfect here in our little corner of Virginia...sunny, 70's, just enough humidity but not too much. We talked a lot about our love of nature, being outdoors, sunshine and how we would love to incorporate more natural touches in the interior of our house.
Mid century decor can be tricky when it comes to bringing the outdoors in. The style we love is identified with clean lines, uncluttered surfaces, and lots of space between objects. Is there room for houseplants? Yes. Pine cones, rocks or fall leaves? Umm, no. So, how to begin bringing nature inspiration indoors? Let's talk this week about...MCM planters, patio furniture, landscaping, plant specimens, privacy walls, breeze ways and the blending on outdoor/indoor decor. Are you with me?

I love this kind of landscaping, but it's definitely suited for a more arid climate than we have here.

DECORATING WITH GREEN

THE FRESHNESS OF GREEN

Yesterday I talked about the difficulty of wearing green. Today I want to show you how easy green is to live with in a room setting. Because green is so prevalent in nature, it goes well with most other colors. Green adds a freshness and is said to relieve stress and to aid in healing. Green can be used in large doses, on practically every surface, without being overwhelming, or if your prefer, a simple house plant or two adds a welcome touch of nature. Whether you go bold or subtle, green in decor is like a breath of fresh air.

"Sexy" is one of the most overused words in design. I know, because I use it waaay too often myself. But......I must ask...is the color green ever "sexy"? Yes, it's fresh, natural, calming, the color of the heart chakra (and Kermit the Frog)...but sexy? I can't quite decide. What do you think?

WEARING GREEN

THE SPECTRUM OF GREEN: FROM YELLOW TO BLUE

I prepared for this post by spending some quality time in my closet. Seriously, I bet I stood there for a whole forty-three seconds. I wanted to see how much green I had in my wardrobe, because earlier in the week I mentioned that I've had difficulty wearing this most tricky of colors. Here's what I discovered...I am able to successfully wear yellowish greens but blueish greens make me look...well...blueish green. I also discovered that I have quite a bit of emerald green, or what one might refer to as a well balanced green, that I bet most people are able to wear. As for the popular "mint" or "seafoam" green..ummm...can anyone actually wear those shades?
Let me show you what I mean.

I suspect the reason I have the best luck with yellowish greens is because I have gold flecks in my eyes and a warm skin tone. Just a guess.

These greens have a good balance of blue and yellow and are probably flattering on most people.

TREE HOUSES

LIFE AMONG THE TREES: FANTASTIC WHIMSICAL TREE HOUSES

Our little house is surrounded by trees. Although we live smack in the middle of a suburban neighborhood, our yard is home to so many trees that when B. and I sit in our living room we often remark that we feel like we live in a tree house. It's one of the things I love most about our house.

Tree house. What images do those two words conjure up for you? Childhood? Adventure? Serenity? Elves and fairies? Peter Pan? Summer? Me too.

I never had a tree house as a kid, not even sure I ever wanted one, but I wouldn't turn down the chance to spend some time in one of these beauties....

Have you ever crossed a swinging bridge? Braxton and I did recently. One word....scary!

Appears to be built with recycled materials. This I love, a truly green house.

The beauty of this really inspires me. If this thing is heated...I am so there.

I wonder if they give tours? I love that they put a traditional lamp inside!

Love how the one above, and the one below, both have trees growing right through the center.

This one appears to have landed there.

When I see photos like these it reminds me how amazingly creative people can be. I imagine the people who built these houses have hearts filled with child-like wonder
and have enormous respect for nature. It takes a pretty daring soul to build such a precarious structure...to have such faith in mother earth...to live among the trees.

GREEN!

GORGEOUS REFRESHING GREEN

When I was a piano student my teacher once asked me to name my favorite color. I immediately looked around the room for clues as to what might be her favorite color (I refer to this as people pleasing, Braxton refers to this as youngest child syndrome. Whatever.) I knew immediately I had guessed correctly...for her response to my answer was..."oh green is my favorite color too!" Score one for people pleasing!

Oddly enough, the positive response from my teacher had me believing, for years, that my favorite color was in fact green. Not so, it was actually yellow.
Now that I'm ----- yrs. old, and no longer have an overwhelming need to please, I can confidently tell you that my favorite color is pink. Today. But I do absolutely adore green!

Braxton keeps telling me I should wear more green, given that my eyes are greenish. I have tried. A very tricky color, green. I've had pretty good luck with green eye shadow (it really does bring out the color of my eyes), but when it comes to putting the color of nature of my body...not so much. Are you able to successfully wear green?

Most people find green to be a relaxing color, I know I do, making it an easy choice for decorating. I especially love to see green in a room with large windows that look out at green trees and grass, making for an uninterrupted green view. So pretty.

Green is refreshing, clean, natural. No wonder the eco movement chose green as their signature color!

VACATION DESTINATION - FANCY BOUTIQUE HOTEL

HOTEL AMERICANO - NEW YORK CITY

Years ago, B. and I stayed in a fancy/schmancy Bed and Breakfast for our anniversary. The absolutely enormous victorian house had previously been a private residence and was located in a leafy neighborhood in a small town in Virginia. Nice. Except when it wasn't.
The owner/hostess, although a lovely woman, would not stop talking, not for a minute. When she invited us to join her in the "parlor for a glass of sherry", we thought it would be rude not to. An hour (or was it two?) later, we were still listening to her story of how she got into the B&B business, and all we wanted to do was go upstairs and engage in some anniversary shenanigans.
Obviously, none of this would have happened if we had booked a weekend at the Marriott...which is why I love love love hotels! Room service! Maid service! Anonymity! Yes, please.

The following pictures (from their website) are of the Hotel American, a hip boutique hotel in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC, surrounded by a gazillion art galleries and restaurants. Perfect for a sexy, private getaway. Must go!

VACATION FASHION - THE CAFTAN

WOULD YOU WEAR A CAFTAN?

I generally don't go in for long flowy dresses, preferring structure and a belted waist especially. However, I'm thinking how wonderfully freeing, not to mention feminine and sexy as hell, the caftan is.
Of course every one needs something easy to throw over a wet bathing suit for the walk back to the hotel room, but what about ....pre-dinner drinks on the patio?...lounging by the pool?...reading in bed in the afternoon?...something sexy for after a shower?... over sunburned skin? The caftan...problem solved!
I think I've found the ultimate vacation fashion. What do you think?

VACATION IDEA: THE HIDEAWAY IN PALM SPRINGS

VACATION IDEA FOR A SIGNIFICANT ANNIVERSARY

Our next wedding anniversary will be a rather big number...big enough that in spite of all the changes and uncertainty around here, we really want to celebrate with a nice romantic getaway. I don't especially want to fly very far, no international flights thank you very much, and I wouldn't mind staying within driving distance...or...how about a train! Thank would be really romantic!
I would love to go someplace warm and sunny (our actual anniversary is in Jan....we were between semesters), sexy, with great food and nothing much to do. Any ideas?

I would love to spend a few days wearing nothing much more than this.

I'm definitely a one piece bathing suit kind of girl. Love the retro vibe of this.

I would need a few of these for the walk from the pool.

Would love to indulge in a few of these, which is why the large caftan is so important!

So, I was nosing around the net and found this hotel....The Hideaway in Palm Springs! We've been to California, but never experienced the mid century time capsule that is PS. It's high time!

CLOCKS!

COOL MID CENTURY CLOCKS!

Personally, I think these groovy clocks go with any decor....no other mcm required. In fact a clock, any clock, is a little bit retro these days.
B. and I have been searching, with no luck, for mid century wall art for ages, but clocks are everywhere! You will have no difficulty finding one that you love, and because they are so plentiful the prices tend to be very reasonable.

This is almost identical to the one we have at our house. I believe we paid about $30.00 for it at a consignment shop. Ours hangs in a hallway above my grandmothers antique desk (definitely NOT mcm!) and it looks right at home.

TENSION POLE LAMPS

MID CENTURY TENSION POLE LAMPS

Braxton has been asking me all week to do a post on tension/pole lamps, and every time he's mentioned it I've had the same thought...I'm not sure I even like tension lamps, I mean they're kind of tacky, right?
I take back (almost) every bad thought I had about tension/pole lamps. Sure enough you have to be pretty committed to the MCM look for include one of these, but nothing lends a mid century vibe like vintage lighting, and no vintage lighting screams louder than the tension lamp. Take a look.

To me, the best thing about this kind of lighting, is that it's so dang flexible. Most of these lamps have three sources of light which are completely adjustable...up, down, sideways, whatever you need, making them useful as task lighting as well as dramatic lighting up a wall or directed on the floor or ceiling.

I think these are paper shades, but wouldn't these be even better if the dots were cut-outs?

Clearly, we all know what coffee and end tables are. Today I thought I'd show you a few lovelies in their natural habitat....the living room.

Such a classic...still being produced today.

I wouldn't want this coffee table around small children...but it's cool, right?
