LEEDS BRADFORD AIRPORT SUBMITS PROPOSAL FOR MORE EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE REPLACEMENT TERMINAL

Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has submitted a planning application to construct a 'state-of-the-art' replacement airport terminal to Leeds City Council. The proposal aims to improve the passenger experience, delivering one of the UK’s most environmentally efficient airport buildings, and support the region’s future economic prosperity.

The plans, first announced in January, replace a previous planning consent and LBA existing terminal building with an efficient and sustainable structure, enabling the airport to reach a target of becoming carbon net zero by 2023 for airport operations.

The plans outline construction of a three floor, 34,000 sq. mt. replacement terminal on an alternative site within the airport’s boundary.

Prior to the submission, LBA engaged in an extensive consultative process, over 1,000 residents and organisations across Yorkshire, provided feedback on the proposed plans. If approved, it is anticipated that work could begin later this year, completion scheduled for 2023.

LBA estimates it will support 12,650 permanent jobs across the Leeds City Region, and in addition create 850 construction related jobs over the period of the build.

Hywel Rees, Chief Executive, LBA said: “The new terminal design allows delivery of existing consented capacity more efficiently, with a smaller environmental footprint. The building will have a modern, flexible design giving passengers the best experience and addresses current challenges our passengers face far too frequently that cannot be overcome within the current building.

“We are committed to the future of LBA and bringing our plans to fruition if approved. This significant investment in the airport will protect and create new jobs, boost international connectivity, and comes at a time when the region and sector need to turbocharge the economic recovery.”

Derek Neil Grant 1945 - 2020.

Derek Grant, a Veteran of Fleet Street, died on Friday March 13th 2020 (!!) A former UPI Foreign Correspondent, UPI London Correspondent and Bureau Chief, then Launch Editor of IRN/LBC commercial talk radio in the UK, lived in Norfolk, then latterly retired to Spain with his wife Pat Grant.

Derek Grant died earlier today, Friday 13th March 2020 at 2:30 pm (CET) at the Huercal Overa Hospital, Andalucia, Spain. He died peacefully in his sleep.

His leaves a widow Pat Grant, married for over 33 years, and a son and daughter by a previous marriage in the UK.

Funeral arrangement have yet to be finalised, as also on this day Friday 13th March 2020; Spain declared a State of Emergency to fight the Coronavirus Pandemic. Both items top of the current news agenda, which as a veteran Fleet Street newsman, Derek would have found highly appropriate.

With the current global health concerns and the uncertainty that these bring to international travel and large gatherings including major aviation related exhibitions and conferences, we have taken the decision to postpone Passenger Terminal EXPO & CONFERENCE.

The new dates are June 9/10/11, 2020, Porte de Versailles, Paris. The event will be held in exactly the same venue as originally planned, at the centrally located Porte de Versailles exhibition center, using a superb quality, brand-new part of the venue with purpose-built conference facilities adjoining the exhibition hall.

The layout enables easy movement between conference rooms, so delegates can quickly switch streams and at the same time enjoy all the advantages of the incredible exhibition with over 300 exhibitors. We have considerable experience in running events globally and we have already run one major expo and conference in Hannover in the week commencing February 24, during the current health problems.

We added numerous extra well-being measures that included airport industry temperature scanners before the entrance to the venue. In combination with significantly enhanced sanitization of all areas, the inclusion of totally wi-fi-based and therefore 'no contact' registration at the entrance area, and numerous contact-free hand-sanitizing units, this created a relaxed and comfortable business environment for all.

Although we do not envisage such measures being necessary in June, we will be monitoring the situation closely and may incorporate similar ones even though by then they could be deemed unnecessary.

Competitiveness of Aviation in the Netherlands Crucial for Jobs and Prosperity

Berlin – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released analysis showing that a more competitive air transport sector in the Netherlands could generate 40,000 new jobs and nearly €8 billion in extra GDP for the nation's economy by 2037.

An IATA study, Netherlands Air Transport Regulatory Competitiveness Indicators, recommends that to maximize the employment and prosperity opportunities created by a successful air transport industry, the Netherlands should:

Increase the cap on aircraft movements and ensure cost-effective expansion of Dutch airports
Avoid the introduction of new environmental taxes
Continue to maintain slot allocation policy in line with EU and global best practice.

Air transport's contribution to the economy of the Netherlands is significant. The industry at present supports 306,000 jobs and contributes €22 billion to the economy, accounting for 3.2% of the Netherlands' GDP. If the government pursues an agenda for competitiveness, an extra 40,000 jobs and nearly €8 billion in additional GDP will be generated by 2037. In contrast, a worrying 84,000 jobs could be lost over the same period if Dutch air transport competitiveness is weakened.

The environment is a key challenge and the aviation industry is committed to reducing its carbon emissions to half of 2005 levels by 2050. Substantial progress has already been made: since 1990, CO2 emissions per passenger have been halved. Meeting the 2050 goal requires significant investment in sustainable aviation fuels and new hybrid-electric technologies. If the government of the Netherlands were to encourage such investments, it would not only be demonstrating climate leadership, it would also open up new economic opportunities for the country.

"The Netherlands has always been an open trading nation and aviation has helped drive forward the Dutch economy. But future progress depends on strong aviation competitiveness. The Netherlands is looking to restore passenger carbon taxes that were abolished years ago because they were proven to damage employment and have no measurable impact on climate change. We urge the government to remember the lessons from last time. Instead of taxes, if strategic policy support for sustainable aviation fuels is given, carbon emissions can be cut faster, without restricting access to air travel for those on lower incomes," said Rafael Schvartzman, IATA's Regional Vice President for Europe.

The Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas has unexpectedly extended the current 10 day cruise to the Canaries by three days to take in storm protective overnight stops in both Malaga and Lisbon as to continue with its present route to Vigo and La Coruna in Northern Spain would have pitched the cruise ship directly into the path of four storms in a conveyor belt like formation.

Jim Van Fleet the Miami based Royal Caribbean weatherman has dominated the ship television channels with lurid images of major storms and waves of over 10 metres coupled with high gale force winds. They have been tracking its progress for several days.

Guests on board have seriously questioned why UK TV weather forecasters are not fully reporting these storms due to impact in the next few days.

UK airlines invest in cleaner aircraft and carbon reduction -
call for a renewed partnership with Government to fund new clean aviation technology and sustainable fuels

As part of the Airlines2050 conference taking place in London today, UK airlines have renewed their calls for a renewed partnership with Government to support the aviation industry in its efforts to decarbonise by investing in the green aviation technologies of the future.

Aviation is a major UK success story and connects Britain to the world, keeping families together, helping businesses thrive and increase trade. UK airlines are showing that they can deliver all these benefits sustainably.

Parliament has legislated to cut greenhouse gas emissions for the UK economy to net zero by 2050 and Airlines UK – the industry body – believes that through an international approach, with the right Government support, and together with substantial investment from industry, this is within reach for UK aviation by 2050.

Airlines are already implementing carbon reduction measures, with new initiatives and investments designed to speed up progress, but support from Government will be crucial:

Cleaner, quieter aircraft - Airlines UK members have spent billions on new aircraft, that are up to 25% more carbon efficient than those they replace.
Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) –SAFs can cut carbon emissions by at least 30% by 2050, and generate thousands of new jobs in UK fuel plants. British Airways is investing $400m in such a sustainable jet fuel plant in Humberside. Airlines are calling on UK Government to provide financial support to extend, upscale, reduce costs of development and commercialise SAF.
Carbon Offsetting Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) – From next year CORSIA, the first worldwide agreement signed by the United Nations in 2016, will make growth in international flights carbon neutral by paying to mitigate around 2.5 billion tonnes of CO2 and generate over $40 billion for climate projects between 2021 and 2035. The UN aims to set an even more ambitious goal beyond 2035. UK Government should continue its excellent leadership role in these discussions at the UN.

Airspace modernisation – Bringing UK airspace into the 21^st century with satellite-based navigation and direct routes can cut carbon emissions by 9 to 14%. Government should work with industry and the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure plans are delivered on time.
Investment in R&D – Investment in new aircraft and engine technology will be critical for delivering future hybrid-electric short-haul aircraft from 2035, and to the deployment of fully electric aircraft in the longer-term. Government should support further R&D.

Tim Alderslade, Chief Executive of Airlines UK, said: "Airlines are doing everything they can to demonstrate their commitment to decarbonisation - and are making real progress, investing in hundreds of new aircraft which are up to 25% more efficient than those they replace.

"Through a renewed partnership between Government and industry, the UK is uniquely placed to capitalise on the opportunities of green aviation technology, whether that's more efficient engines or hybrid electric aircraft. However, these remain some years off which is why support for sustainable aviation fuels and airspace modernisation in the here and now remains so vital.

"Aviation is of course an international sector and in addition to our own efforts, Governments across the globe must continue to support the UN offsetting scheme that will capture any growth in aviation from next year, and continue to work on developing a long-term target through to 2050 that crucially is consistent with limiting global temperatures to 1.5 degrees."

Grant Shapps MP, Secretary of State for Transport, said: "The fight against climate change is the greatest and most pressing challenge facing the modern world and aviation has a crucial role to play in tackling it. This commitment by the aviation industry is very welcome and absolutely vital if we are to reduce carbon emissions.

"The government has recently invested £2bn in aerospace research and development and sustainable fuels, and is continuing to look for opportunities to support the creation of greener, cleaner transport."

As the brexit negitiations head for the wire there is a growing awareness, that whole areas if regulation and international co- operation will not be covered in the brexit package, writes Julian Bray.

This is particularly exposed in the aerospace and aviation sector. Put simply UK benchmarking will not automatically be recognised within the federated European Union structure. I use the word 'federated' deliberately as there are moves to create a European Army and an air defene and attack capability.

This of course goes way beyond a simple trading and co-operation arrangement, and puts any commnand structure beyond the control ot individuak EU members, as the federated model effective inserts a higher supra national control structure. Politically its seen by some as a punishment or slap in the face for the UK daring to leave the EU club and taking its sizeable financial contribution with it.

This of course will highlight the shaky financial position of the EU dubbed by many as the last of the big spenders! It also highlights the fact than no one has seen properly and independently audited financial accounts for many years. If they are produced at some time in the future its expected to disclose a few sweetheart deals amongst its main members, many of which would be abandoned or immediately shut down if the financial spotlight was turned on and the participants subjected to scrutiny.

London City Airport fully functioning despite circa 100 Extinction Rebellion demonstrators staging sit in.

John Sullivan CEO London City Airport was slightly upbeat this morning, claiming that the Extinction Rebellion aim to close the airport down as part of its week long London centric disruptive activity programme had failed. His comments were premature as an elderly smartly dress protester evaded security to board a plane berating seated passengers and waving an iphone.

Mr Sullivan claimed that anti-drone measures (see picture) were in place, but had not so far been used .

Police boarded the aircraft (bound for Dublin) and made an arrest. Elsewhere some 30 arrests were made. Police support being provided not by the Met but by the reputedly much tougher (and taller) #CityofLondonPolice, pictures of a demonstrator bring collar dragged along the ground by a single officer contrasts with the Met Policy of allocating six officers to lift and carry a single demonstrator.... www.aviationtravelcomment.guru

Norwegian Spirit Cruise ship passengers 'mutiny'

Julian Bray writes: I've just watched passengers video footage of a so called mutiny on board the Norwegian Spirit and the live comments of a couple who left the ship, they were speaking on the BBC #Victorialive TV programme.

The 'beef' seems to be several ports of call were missed due to inclement weather, as we have had the tail end of a series of USA originated hurricanes, at one point the ship spent five days at sea.

The vacuum toilet system backed up (this often happens if the passengers are unhappy, as they deliberately stuff unsuitable detritus down the loo as a protest!) and the advertised Iceland port of call missed, again due to weather, but the company substituted with stops in Scotland and Belfast. Some stops out if season and nothing open!

Passengers complained the food was stale as the ship was five days at sea. ... Nonsense of course, as the ship will have been fully provisioned for the entire cruise at Southampton, its initial departure port..

The female complainant said the crisps were stale (!!!) and the meat over five days old! Ha Ha! I'd hope my steak had been hanging for at least 10 -15 days to bring out the flavour!

That aside the Company had only offered a 25% discount against a future cruise, when the passengers were demanding cash refunds. Sadly for the passengers, they had signed the booking contract, so in effect not entitled to a penny.

So this is where goodwill comes in, and essentially its the skills of the cruise director rather than the Captain can save the day. On this voyage the Cruise Director clearly didn't have the confidence of the passengers and the on board management failed in moving quickly enough to calm matters down and putting on a diversionary entertainment programme or concessionary drinks/ cocktail party.

The Americans also complained their passports were taken, as they sometimes are for checking then given back.

The last time I did an almost identical route, we went up to Russia St Petersberg. It was November but the ship still had complaints from some passengers who had booked balcony cabins complaining that they could not use the balcony as it was far too cold! November, Russia, cold? Who would believe it!
