Before he became one of Latin America’s most prolific filmmakers — with more than 80 movies credited to his production company — Luiz Carlos Barreto was a photographer. For 15 years beginning in the late 1940s, he worked for O Cruzeiro, a Brazilian weekly magazine similar to Life or Look traveling all over Latin America and also working as a correspondent in Europe.

Mr. Barreto, now 83, was in New York recently for the United States premiere of “Lula, Son of Brazil,” his company’s latest film, directed by his son Fábio. But back home in Brazil, his early photographic work has been getting renewed attention. A book of his photos called “Passagem: A Memória Visual de Luiz Carlos Barreto,” or “Passage: The Visual Memory of Luiz Carlos Barreto,”was published a decade ago.  And his work has been featured in retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, where he has lived since the 1940s, and at the Museum of Art in São Paulo.

His images range from gritty depictions of Brazil’s urban and rural poor, especially from the sertão, or arid backlands of the northeast, Mr. Barreto’s home region, to celebrity portraits: Mr. Barreto covered the first Cannes film festival in 1954 and later shot stars like Marlene Dietrich, Frank Sinatra, Brigitte Bardot, Kim Novak and Sophia Loren. But he also photographed global political figures ranging from Che Guevara and Nikita Khrushchev to Latin American presidents.

At the opening of the poster exhibition “Discover the Brazilian Cinema” presented at the 2nd Brazil Film Festival in Beijing, its co-curator Bruno Porto was joined by British designer Zara Arshad and Italian multimedia artist Alessandro Rolandi in an panel to address the relation between moving and still images: movies and its posters. The trio discussed aspects of contemporary marketing and promoting techniques – in which target audiences may only see a poster when they reach the theater, long after they’ve watched the trailer and read about it online – that subvert the original role of the poster, changes in technology that liberate the poster from paper, as well as its collectible aspects, and some of the “style formulas” specific genres use.

The debate and the exhibition were some of the parallel events of the 2nd Brazilian Film Fest in China, that took place at the Broadway Cinematheque MOMA in Beijing from November 17-22. It also featured a concert by musician, actor and soundtrack composer André Abujamra and a Q&A session with André Klotzel, director of Reflections of a Blender, the movie that won the festival Judge’s Choice Award. The international jury was composed by directors Xie Fei, Liu Jiayin, Sam Voutas and Vicky Mohieddeen & movie critic Raymond Zhou.

Curated by graphic designers Billy Bacon and Bruno Porto, “Discover the Brazilian Cinema” features works by 30 graphic artists from diverse backgrounds, generations and parts of Brazil that encourage – through curiosity, beauty and witty visual solutions – the Chinese audience to enjoy Brazilian films. The show had been presented before at the 10th Shanghai International Film Festival in 2007 and the Pernambuco Design Salon in 2008. It was also selected for the 9th Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial, that traveled to Mexico and China in 2009.

His Story of Creating Ad Icons Also Includes a Harrowing 53-Day Kidnapping

Brazil’s top creatives are treated like rock stars, so it’s no surprise that Washington Olivetto is about to have a movie made of his life.

Mr. Olivetto, whose W/Brasil agency merged with McCann Erickson in Brazil last year to form W/McCann, was one of the first larger-than-life Brazilian creatives to start his own agency, create iconic ad characters and become part of the country’s popular culture. The most dramatic episode in the film, however, is likely to be Mr. Olivetto’s traumatic 53-day kidnapping ordeal in 2001 in São Paulo. Snatched at a fake police roadblock, Mr. Olivetto ultimately managed to escape after being abandoned to die by the kidnappers who were demanding a multimillion dollar ransom.

The movie will be directed by Fernando Meirelles, who was an Oscar nominee for Best Director for foreign-language film “City of God” (Cidade de Deus, in the original Portuguese) in 2004. The movie will be based on a biography of Mr. Olivetto’s life and ad agency W/Brasil published in 2005 by Fernando Morais, a well-known Brazilian biographer.

Shooting starts on the film, budgeted at $4.5 million, later this year and it’s expected to be released in late 2012 or early 2013

Daytripper by Moon & Bá

Since the launching of its first issue in December 2009, ten-issue comic book limited series Daytripper – published by the DC Comics imprint Vertigo – has been praised by every decent comics critic. The series was collected into a trade paperback in February 2011, going straight into the New York Times Paperback Graphic Books chart at #1. It returned at the same position two weeks later, where it stayed for a week, before dropping to #2 in mid-March. At the end of June, Amazon.com posted their “2011 Best Books of the Year So Far” lists, where Daytripper was featured in its Top 10 Comics and Graphic Novels category. It has also won three of the most important international comics industry awards of the year: the Eisner (“Best Limited Series or Story Arc”), the Harvey (“Best Single Issue or Story”) and the Eagle (“Favourite New Comicbook”).

The authors of both story and art are Brazilian twin brothers Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá, 31 years old, no strangers to the international comics industry or awards. Both have worked with top guns of comics and pop culture from Mike Mignola (BPRD: 1947) and Matt Fraction (Casanova) to TV creator and movie writer/director Joss Whedon and alternative rock band My Chemical Romance’s lead singer Gerard Way.

At the 2008 Eisner Awards, the six-issue limited series about a disbanded group of superheroes The Umbrella Academy (written by Way with art by Bá) won for “Best Limited Series”, sci-fi adventure Sugarshock (written by Whedon with art by Moon) won for “Best Digital Comic”, and comics anthology “5″ (by Moon & Bá with other comics creators Becky Cloonan, Vasilis Lolos and Rafael Grampá) won for “Best Anthology”. Bá had also been nominated for two 2009 Eisner Awards in the categories “Best Penciller/Inker” and “Best Cover Artist”, and The Deluxe Edition of The Umbrella Academy was nominated for “Best Graphic Album — Reprint”. Horror comics anthology PIXU (Moon, Bá, Cloonan and Lolos) was nominated for the 2009 “Best Anthology” Harvey Award.

Daytripper is currently in its 4th printing and was recently launched in Brazil, where it won an HQMix award. Each issue follows a life-changing day in the life of Brás de Oliva Domingo, an aspiring novelist who writes newspaper obituaries. The story takes place mostly in São Paulo – where the brothers were born and still live – with important events set in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, as well as small towns in the countryside or by the coast that are so real they seem to have jumped out of romances of Monteiro Lobato or Jorge Amado.

Remarkably written and drawn, Daytripper also gives its international audience a rare opportunity to experience the daily aspects of Brazilians lifestyle, habits, beliefs and culture. As a plot, it could have taken place anywhere in the world – as with most masterpieces – , but its natural Brazilian flavor definitely plays an important role in the outcome.

2011 IDA Congress Taipei

Design at the Edges: 2011 IDA Congress will take place from 24-26 October in Taipei  focusing on five keynote speeches – Biotechnology, Economic Development, International Migration, Internet, and Urbanism – in its morning sessions, with afternoons devoted to dozens of presentations on education, design practice, academic research, and multiculturalism, among other themes.  There Brazilians will join the ranks of distinguished professionals and academics from more than 40 countries:

Curator, journalist and writer Adélia Borges will deliver a lecture presenting recent Latin American projects concerning social innovation, with examples that will bring together product, graphic and interior design from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia.

Designer Fred Gelli will be a panellist on the keynote session “Urbanism – Shaping Cities through Urban Design Strategies” alongside colleagues from Finland, UK and USA, also presenting the design of the Olympic Games Rio 2016 branding, developed by his company Tátil Design de Ideias.

Graphic designer and educator Bruno Porto will be a Category Presenter for the 2011 Adobe Design Achievement Awards ceremony – Porto was a member of the jury of the 2010 ADAA – and a correspondent for Brazilian magazine abcDesign, a Media Partner of the IDA Congress and Icograda.

The International Design Alliance (IDA) is a strategic venture between the international organisations representing industrial design, communication design and interior architecture/design. The alliance was created by its founding partners, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) and the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) in 2003. In 2008, the IDA welcomed the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) to the alliance as the third partner.

_ the edge between the design practices and other fields having a stake in design, including: science, technology, government, business and non-governmental humanitarian organisations;
_ the edge between design disciplines, especially industrial, communication and interior architecture/design-what do they share in common and what sets them apart;

As a winner in 2009 for the project developed for the Cool Readings book collection (Editora Biruta) and for the book “Our Movie” (Edições Jogo de Amarelinha) in 2010, this year Casa Rex has been acknowledged in the Miscellaneous Company Literature category, for the visual identity that was created for the circle of debates about Contemporary Art and Education promoted by AEP – Art Education Productions.

In order to develop the illustrations for the programme, Casa Rex made use of seventeenth-century engravings of imaginary animals, created to play with the illusions that people often have about contemporary art: “Generally the subject of contemporary art is viewed as being almost as strange as a seven-headed animal. The concept of portraying fictional animals has been used as a way of making light of these perceptions.” says Gustavo Piqueira, head of the agency as well as the creative director on the project, together with Samia Jacintho.

The project has been selected as one of the winning entries out of more than 4000 submissions and it will be featured in the September/ October 2011 issue of the Communication Arts Magazine Design Annual 52 Awards (http://www.commarts.com/annuals/2011-Design/winners).

Trabalho Grafico no Bairro do Bexiga

Bruno R. Padovano, Suzana M. Sacchi Padovano and Alessandro Sacchi Padovano of Padovano Arquitetura em Rede Ltda received the Gold Medal at IDSA’s IDEA 2010 Awards in the Environments Category:

The urban painting project for the façades of houses and stores in the traditional São Paulo Italian district of Bixiga was developed to meet the requirements of the “Color São Paulo Program”, which is dedicated to preserving the city’s architectural heritage in districts of cultural, historic and commercial interest. The design proposal incorporated the traditional colors of Bixiga – green, white and red from the Italian flag – that were used on house and store facades covering a two block area. The greatest challenge posed by the design was to intervene in an urban context with a strong cultural heritage while taking into account the diversity of interests and preferences among local traders and residents.

Gilvan Samico, "Criação - Homem e Mulher", 1993

Gilvan José Meira Lins Samico (Recife, Pernambuco, 1928- ). Engraver, painter, draughtsman, lecturer. In 1952, together with other artists, Gilvan Samico founded the Ateliê Coletivo [Collective Studio] of the Sociedade de Arte Moderna do Recife – SAMR [Recife Modern Art Society], conceived by Abelardo da Hora (1924).

Gilvan studied wood engraving with Lívio Abramo (1903 – 1992) in 1957 at the Escola de Artesanato [School of Crafts] of the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo – MAM/SP [São Paulo Museum of Modern Art]. In the following year, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he studied engraving with Oswaldo Goeldi (1895 – 1961) at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes – Enba [National School of Fine Arts]. With a great technical mastery, he dedicated himself in his work to textures elaborated with linear rhythms.

In 1965, he settled in Olinda, lecturing in wood engraving at the Universidade Federal da Paraíba – UFPA [Federal University of Paraíba]. In 1968, with the foreign travel prize won at the 17th Salão Nacional de Arte Moderna [National Salon of Modern Art], he spent two years in Europe. In 1971, he was invited by Ariano Suassuna to join the Movimento Armorial [Armorial Movement], directed towards popular Northeastern culture and the literature of the Cordel.

His output is marked by the recovery of the poetry of the Northeast through the Cordel literature and the creative use of wood engravings. His engravings are populated by biblical and other figures deriving from myths and local stories, as well as fantastic and mythical animals. With the presentation of new subject matter, he introduced a formal simplification into his work, reducing the use of colour and textures.

Samico has works in the MoMA in New York and participated twice in the Venice Biennale with an award in one of them.

CR January: Made in Brazil

There’s a feature in our January/2010 issue (out 18 December) about São Paulo gallery Choque Cultural and its attempts to keep the tradition of letterpress Lambe-Lambe posters going by using Gráfica Fidalga to produce books and prints.

We thought it would be interesting to ask the workshop to create the artwork for our cover. Choque’s Baixo Ribeiro designed a layout using text supplied by us. We also gave him an EPS of the logo which the guys at GF made a stencil from and then routed out of a piece of wood.

Illustra Brazil is coming to China

Brought to Asia in a joint-project of SIB and the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil, the exhibition will be held from August 20th – September 25th 2011 at The Foundry Gallery in Shanghai, China. The exhibition catalog featuring text in Chinese, English, Spanish and Portuguese will be distributed during the festival.

The event also includes a series of lectures and workshops in Chinese universities, children guided tours, and meetings with Chinese professional associations. A seminar featuring Brazilian illustration, comics and animation projects for international clients will be presented on August 26th at the prestigious RockBund Art Museum by Orlando Pedroso, Marcelo Martinez and Bruno Porto, members of SIB’s Council of Directors.

Explore Brazil, from "Into Brazil" Project

IntoBrazil is a part of a master degree research done by the designer Pedro Brêtas at NCAD/The National College of Art and Design. This website allows users to create a virtual travel experience to Brazil and explore touristic cities.

Apart from the interesting experiment of customizing trips to Brazil, the site create a pretty rich immersion experience by capturing the Brazilian culture through visuals and sounds. Please note the beautiful watercolor illustrations and the amazing background music selection.

The first Sunhoo Festival for Creativity and Innovation took place in the cities of Hangzhou, capital of the Zhejiang province, and FuYang from April 21-29 2011, gathering 35 design professionals from 18 countries in the five continents and an audience of 850 people. The event meant to explore the relationship between design, industry, art and technology through art installations in the LiuYing Garden at the West Lake and lectures at the Sunhoo International Industrial Designers Forum.

Three Brazilian design professionals were among the keynote speakers, featuring the work they’ve been conducting in China. Fashion designer Enesoe Chan presented the Summer collections he has been developing in Shanghai, mixing Brazilian and Chinese elements as wearable art; architect Cecilia Reichstul of Fernando Brandão Design presented their project for the Brazilian Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo 2010; graphic designer and educator Bruno Porto showed how the Brazilian graphic arts have been promoted in China through exhibitions, workshops and publications (including BrazilianGraphicDesign.com), as well as his own design and consultancy projects.

Others speakers included Clive Roux, CEO of Industrial Designers Society of America; Soon-In Lee, president of the Seoul Design Center; Reiner Packeiser, head of exhibitions of the Vitra Design Museum; Swiss furniture designer Jonas Merian; Colombian new media researcher Andres Burbano, from UCSB; Lars Thoegersen, CEO of CPH Design Denmark; and architect Anu Leinonen of OMA / Rem Koolhaas.

Guaraná Jesus New Can received the Gold Medal at IDSA’s IDEA 2010 Awards in the Design Strategy Category

Leandro Pierucci, Leonardo Lanzetta, Daylton Almeida, Vanessa Freire, Fabiana Brito, Rodrigo Rabello, Mário Mendonça, Alexandre Coreixas, Roberta Loyola, Márcia Tabajara and Sônia Carolina Batista of Dia Comunicação received the Gold Medal at IDSA’s IDEA 2010 Awards in the Design Strategy Category for Guaraná Jesus New Can:

The Guarana Jesus soft drink brand is an icon in the northeastern Brazilian state of Maranhao. The drink is a local tradition in which Maranhao residents take great pride. Guarana Jesus consumers, sellers and even manufacturers were surveyed to create a marketing strategy which enhances brand identity. The new brand identity and can design were chosen through internet voting and SMS messages, with more than 12,000 votes collected. This marketing initiative generated high mobilization levels and the branding work helped to bring the Maranhao people together by strengthening their traditions. The can design chosen conveys the typical Portuguese colonial tiles found in the state capital city, Sao Luis.

"São Paulo's Soccer Museum" by Jair de Souza Design and Fundação Roberto Marinho

Jair de Souza, Daniela Thomas, Felipe Tassara, Mauro Munhoz and Leonel Kaz received the Gold Medal at IDSA’s IDEA 2010 Awards in the Entertainment Category for Museu do Futebol:

São Paulo’s Soccer Museum is a multi-artform project combining architecture, curatorship, museography, art direction, multimedia and visual design. The Museum is situated within Pacaembu Soccer Stadium and tells Brazil’s history through soccer, while contextualizing and identifying this sport as part of the spirit and essence of Brazilian culture. Conceived as a multi-sensorial venue, the museum’s infrastructure is made up of LCD screens, back projection screens, LED panels, glass plates and aluminium, iron, steel and polycarbonate structures. The major curatorial challenge was to create a museum that would be both intelligent and exciting, moving away from the traditional concept of sports museums – no banners, trophies, pennants, soccer players’ shirts and shoes – without changing the stadium’s architecture.

Casa Rex wins HOW 2010 International Design Awards

HOW Magazine, one of the main design publications of the United States (since 1985), has selected the witty Dixie Toga Amazing Holographic Collection of Empty Packs by São Paulo based Casa Rex as a winner of its HOW 2010 International Design Award.

Casa Rex, that has recently opened a London office, had previoulsy received HOW awards for the for the “Saraiva Classics” book collection (Ed. Saraiva) and the graphics for the “Cool Readings” collection (Ed. Biruta).
