The state of New York has solidified its position as the nation’s leader on advancing clean, zero-emissions energy with the passage of the state’s Clean Energy Standard (CES), Exelon Corp. said today following the New York Public Service Commission’s approval of the CES.

“Today is a historic day for New York and the energy industry, and we applaud Governor Andrew Cuomo and his Administration for their leadership,” said Chris Crane, president and CEO, Exelon. “Approval of the Clean Energy Standard makes New York a true leader in terms of support for zero-emissions energy, including both renewables and nuclear power.”

The CES will save thousands of high-paying jobs and spur hundreds of millions of dollars in short-term investments in energy infrastructure in upstate New York. The company said it will review the commission’s order over the next several days.

“With the Clean Energy Standard, we’ll immediately invest hundreds of millions of dollars right back into the upstate economy, which will have a long-term positive impact across the state,” Crane said. As Exelon has previously indicated, approval of the program means the company will reinvest approximately $200 million in the plants in spring of 2017.

Exelon operates two nuclear energy facilities in upstate New York: R.E. Ginna and Nine Mile Point. Together, the two plants produce 2.4 billion watts of zero-carbon electric capacity, employ 1,400 full-time workers with an annual payroll of $266 million and thousands more indirect jobs, and pay over $47 million annually in local taxes. Without the CES, these plants would have been at risk of closure.

Exelon said on July 13 that it had entered into discussions with Entergy to potentially purchase the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant in Scriba, New York. Those negotiations can continue now that the CES has been approved, providing an opportunity to prevent the plant from being shut down.

A New York Public Service Commission’s analysis released April 18 said that FitzPatrick produces more than $1 billion in economic value annually to New York. An independent study published by The Brattle Group in December found similar economic benefits.

A new report from Navigant Research analyzes the global smart city market, with a focus on energy, water, mobility, buildings, and government services, providing comprehensive profiles of smart city projects and forecasts for smart city technologies, segmented by industry and region, through 2025.

As city leaders around the world continue to commit to smart city objectives to meet social, economic, and environmental challenges, national governments are also encouraging cities to become centers of innovation and drivers of sustainable growth. But while there are many grand visions for the development of smart cities, and even more pilots and demonstration programs, there are far fewer large-scale, financially sound deployments of smart solutions to solve core city problems. Click to tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, global smart city revenue is expected to grow from $36.8 billion in 2016 to $88.7 billion by 2025.

“Today, city leaders and suppliers are recognizing that there needs to be a more clear and timely route to the broader deployment of proven technologies and solutions,” says Eric Woods, research director with Navigant Research. “The question is how to establish the right business models and deployment strategies to enable this expansion.”

Current city strategies increasingly emphasize resilience and climate adaption and focus on making smart city development relevant to citizens and their daily lives, according to the report. During the next two years, the adoption of smart city solutions is expected accelerate as the spread of the Internet of Things provides further momentum.

The report, Smart Cities, examines the evolution of the global smart city market, with a focus on five key industries: energy, water, mobility, buildings, and government. The study compares different approaches to the smart city and provides comprehensive profiles of noteworthy smart city projects in each major world region. Global revenue forecasts for smart city technologies, segmented by industry and region, extend through 2025. The report also examines the significant market drivers and challenges related to smart cities, key business models used to fund smart city projects, and the competitive landscape.
Hudson Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:HDSN) announced that it has been awarded, as prime contractor, a five-year contract including a five-year renewal option, by the United States Defense Logistics Agency (“DLA”) with an estimated maximum value over the term of the agreement of $400 million in sales to the Department of Defense. The fixed price contract is for the management and supply of refrigerants, compressed gases, cylinders and related items to US Military Commands and Installations, Federal civilian agencies and Foreign Militaries. Primary users include the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

Kevin Zugibe, Chairman and CEO of Hudson Technologies, commented, “This award was two years in the making and represents a transformative win for Hudson. In January of 2015, we executed a strategic acquisition of a West Coast based supplier of refrigerants and compressed gases to expand our presence in the industrial gas sectors. This acquisition provided us with complementary capabilities to subsequently bid on, and ultimately win, this large DoD contract. While the ultimate amount of revenue will depend on order levels, this award solidifies our presence in the refrigerants and industrial gas sectors and we believe will contribute considerable future revenue and earnings growth.”

Exelon Generation has formally notified grid operator PJM Interconnection of its plans to retire the Quad Cities Generating Station on June 1, 2018. This is the latest of several procedural notifications Exelon is required to make prior to retiring the Quad Cities and Clinton nuclear stations in Illinois. Last month, Exelon Generation similarly notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

On June 2, Exelon announced plans to close the Quad Cities and Clinton stations on June 1, 2018, and June 1, 2017, respectively, given the lack of progress on Illinois energy legislation. The stations have lost a combined $800 million in the past seven years, despite being two of Exelon’s best-performing plants.

“We continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure the retirement of these plants is carried out responsibly, safely and with consideration to the employees and the communities in which the plants operate,” said Chris Crane, Exelon president and CEO. “We are committed to being transparent at every step in the process, and that includes giving grid operators ample time to prepare for the loss of these units.”

Employees will safely operate Quad Cities until the retirement date, with staff transitions expected within six months after retirement. Exelon employs nearly 900 workers at Quad Cities. Clinton, which operates in the MISO market, employs approximately 700 workers. Exelon plans to formally notify MISO of its plans to close Clinton later this year.

The Quad Cities and Clinton stations support approximately 4,200 direct and indirect jobs and produce more than $1.2 billion in economic activity annually. A state report found that closing the plants would increase wholesale energy costs for the region by $439 million to $645 million annually.

Exelon will continue to work with stakeholders on passing the Next Generation Energy Plan that is critical to the state’s environment and economy. While these needed policy reforms may come too late to save Quad Cities and Clinton, Exelon is committed to working with policymakers and other stakeholders to advance an all-of-the-above plan that would promote zero-carbon energy, create and preserve clean-energy jobs, establish a more equitable utility rate structure and give customers more control over their bills.

Bread for the World today expressed hope that the poverty plan released by Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) and the House of Representatives’ Task Force on Poverty, Opportunity, and Upward Mobility will start a bipartisan discussion on how to end hunger and poverty.

“Bread for the World applauds Speaker Ryan for giving poverty the attention it deserves and offering a plan to address it,” said Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. “We have disagreements with some of the proposals. But we are pleased that the plan doesn’t propose to cut or block-grant anti-poverty programs, and we welcome the emphasis on making programs as effective as possible.”

Beckmann and other Christian leaders, who form the core of the Circle of Protection, have repeatedly met with Ryan and his staff. They recently wrote to members of the task force about what they hoped to see – and not see – in the Republican poverty plan. The letter can be read at www.circleofprotection.us/taskforce.

Bread for the World hopes the Republican plan will jumpstart a serious bipartisan dialogue about ending hunger and poverty, both in the current Congress and during the 2016 elections. Currently, 48 million Americans, including nearly 16 million children, struggle with hunger. A recent voter survey commissioned by Bread for the World found that 2 in 3 American voters believe that ending hunger should be one of the top priorities of the government.

Bread notes that the Republican plan stresses work without offering any solution to the fact that many people cannot find jobs. The plan fails to address the disparate impact of poverty on people of color and the racial bias that underlies this reality. The Republican plan also fails to mention global hunger and poverty, even though Republicans and Democrats have worked together on some global poverty issues.

“We believe we can end hunger and extreme poverty in our country and around the world if our leaders make it a higher priority,” said Beckmann. “We look forward to seeing the Democrats’ anti-poverty plan, and to having a real debate about solutions.”

Bread for the World (www.bread.org) is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.

The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) is a forum of countries working together to accelerate the global transition to clean energy. Speaking later today at its summit in San Francisco, Bill Bien, Head of Strategy for Philips Lighting commented, “We plan to turn the agreement at the COP21 UN Climate Change Summit in Paris into tangible action. Energy efficiency is the low-hanging fruit in the fight against climate change. Delivering on this pledge will be positive for our environment as well as the global economy, resulting in energy savings of around EUR 12 billion annually by 2020 that could be invested elsewhere. The clock is ticking for humanity — action is needed now before it’s too late.”

The Philips Lighting pledge supports the Global Lighting Challenge – a campaign to deploy 10 billion high efficiency, high quality affordable light bulbs (such as LED) as soon as possible to combat climate change. The campaign was launched last December by the Clean Energy Ministerial at the COP21 UN Climate Change Summit.

Committed to becoming carbon neutral

At the CEM7 summit Philips Lighting will call upon other companies to follow its lead and accept the challenge of becoming a carbon neutral company. At COP21, Royal Philips pledged to become a carbon neutral company and purchase all of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. Philips Lighting reaffirms both of these commitments and offers to share its experience and learnings with other organizations as it works to meet these challenges.

Key to achieving carbon neutrality is the use of energy from renewables and driving down carbon emissions in operations and logistics. Philips Lighting reported progress in the US where it expects electricity for its operation to be 100% carbon neutral this year thanks to a power purchase agreement from the Hidalgo Wind Farm in McCook, Texas.

“It’s gratifying to produce LED light bulbs and connected lighting systems that reduce energy consumption by up to 80% compared to conventional lighting. But we must be accountable for our own footprint too – that’s why we’re committed to being carbon neutral by the end of the decade. To do this we’ve had to re-examine everything we do: our operations, processes and supply chain. I’m pleased to report we’re well on the way to achieving this goal and last year increased our use of renewables globally to 60% 2,”said Bien.

1The more than two billion LED bulbs pledge by Philips Lighting is calculated from 2015-2020 (inclusive).

2This figure relates to the period 2007-2015 and is in line with the information provided in the Royal Philips Annual Report 2015.
