BreakPoint - We Must Carry On

What a privilege it was for me to be part of the group who had assembled together in Lansdowne, Virginia on March 30th for what would be Chuck Colson's final message given at The Colson Center's Break the Spiral of Silence conference.

That evening, Chuck shared his growing concern that the church is failing to speak out against the lies, against injustice, and present our case in a winsome way. He believed that if we could do this, then the cultural debate would begin to shift. Chuck passionately expressed that "the time is ripe for a movement of God's people, under the power of the Holy Spirit, to begin to impact the culture we live in."

Now, on behalf of The Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, it will be the powerful voices of Eric Metaxas and John Stonestreet most frequently heard on "BreakPoint" calling us "to live it, and express it, and contend for it"!

Emily Colson shared at her father's memorial service last week that "there is work to be done" and urged us to "seek the truth, defend the weak, and live courageous lives."

And, this is what BreakPoint and The Colson Center will continue to do! Thank you for standing with us in carrying out Chuck's message and contending for the Christian worldview.

Just as a reminder, we have produced a 1-hour radio special titled, "Chuck Colson - A Life Remembered" that is available for airing at any time. The complete special was delivered to your station's Amb-OS receiver earlier this month and it is also available at our ftp site.

Transitions in Leadership

The movement of time progressively carries us forward with a motion that we cannot stop. This movement brings with it many seasons and changes. Recently, I have been contemplating the changes brought about by transitions in leadership.

Being a Biola graduate and Torrey Honors alumni I am joining with my fellow chums as we face a transition within Torrey as our beloved and fearless leader, Dr. John Mark Reynolds leaves Torrey to be provost at Houston Baptist University. Despite grief at his departure, Dr. Reynolds exhorted his students to embrace the change and know that the most growth comes from transitions and changes. The values that he instilled in Torrey, the pursuit of goodness, truth, and beauty, these things shall persist after his departure. They shall remain in the foundation of the program and continue to be lived out by Torrey's new Director, Dr. Paul Spears, the remaining faculty, staff, and all of the students.

Prominent on my mind as well is the more sobering change at Prison Fellowship and the change in leadership that is imminent with the decline in health of their founder, Chuck Colson.

Chuck has brought years of service and heartfelt passion for the Lord to the table in all that he has pursued since his conversion in 1973, amidst the Watergate scandal. From all his experiences he was able to pour a passion and bring a light into prisons all over the world and upon this passion and devotion, Prison Fellowship was founded.

The values, passions, and dreams of a true leader shall remain after the leader does not or cannot.

I believe the same to be true of Prison Fellowship. While Chuck will be dearly missed and we will move to support his family and the ministry the best we can, his legacy shall live on through those he lives behind at Prison Fellowship and across the nation.

The Spiral of Silence

German sociologist Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann coined the phrase "the Spiral of Silence" after witnessing Hitler and his ilk intimidate citizens until they were afraid to speak out against the most horrible evils imaginable: the mass slaughter of human beings.

Noelle-Neumann said that a society falls into this fearful state, the Spiral of Silence, when it allows a tiny majority of the population to control the conversation. Most people are by nature reluctant to go against the tide of public opinion. Others are frightened, so the majority is silenced.

Have we succumbed to the Spiral of Silence? Have we remained silent while our culture is hijacked by philosophies hostile to God's created order?

Sadly, we too often have. In fact, Christians have been cowed into silence over our most fundamental issues! Proponents of traditional marriage, religious freedom, and the sanctity of human life are labeled "ignorant," "bigoted," "out-of-touch," and "intolerant."

Yet 40 percent of Americans identify themselves as born again. How are Christian values in retreat? Why are we allowing a handful of angry voices to control the public conversation?

Chuck Colson says, "What frustrates me the most is that in any rational examination of the issues, the biblical worldview triumphs. It makes more sense for society, for example, to build healthy marriages than to allow them to be destroyed. The real problem I see is our failure to speak out against the lies, against injustice, and present our case in a winsome way. I think if we will do this, we will begin to break the Spiral of Silence, and the cultural debate will begin to shift. This is what we are called to do, and I believe it is our most urgent task."

I'm looking forward to this weekend when I'll hear from Chuck and many leading experts on issues of life, marriage, and religious liberty assembling at the Wilberforce Weekend Conference: Break the Spiral of Silence in Lansdowne, Virginia. The panel of speakers includes Maggie Gallagher; Dr. Robert George; Dr. Timothy George; Bishop Harry R. Jackson, Jr.; Scott Klusendorf; Eric Metaxas will emcee, and they will honor the 2012 William Wilberforce Award Recipient, Joni Eareckson Tada.

Across all of BreakPoint's broadcast platforms, their purpose is to help your audience learn how to stand up, speak out, and break the Spiral of Silence.

It was a privilege being with Alan Terwilleger, President of BreakPoint/The Colson Center and John Stonestreet, The Colson Center/Speaker on "The Point" at the NRB Convention last week (pictured here with Buster Wilson, American Family Radio) and to hear them share more about plans for this year's Wilberforce Conference scheduled for March 30-April 1 in Lansdowne VA.

BreakPoint: Teaching a Christian Worldview

For the past 20 years, BreakPointhas been bringing listeners up to speed on cultural, political, and religious issues from a uniquely Christian worldview perspective.

But for some time now, Chuck has had a desire to bring your audience more, to have more time in a program to dig deeper into the issues that matter so much today: Religious freedom, the sanctity of life, the family, and so much more.

So he is very excited about the new half-hour weekend show, "BreakPoint This Week" featuring discussions with top-quality guests who engage in a lively back and forth with Chuck and his colleague at "The Point," John Stonestreet.

This weekend's program features a very special guest: Former President Jimmy Carter. While President Carter and Chuck are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, they have common ground in their love for Jesus Christ. Chuck pressed him on a number of issues, how he applied his faith in the White House and in the years following.
