Winner of the 'Holiday' category at this year's World Architecture Festival, Barcelona, is Restaurant Tusen by Swedish architectural office, Murman Arkitekter. Lying at the snowy outpost of the small but perfectly formed Ramundberget ski resort, Sweden, Restaurant Tusen, with its bark-covered birch tree frontage, stands like some post-apocalyptic fort.

The strangely welcoming imposition of this foodie citadel, situated as it is in the bleak, snowy landscape, is a fine example of Murman Arkitekter's intentions of environmental engagement for reasons both ecological and humanitarian. The carefully chosen location places Restaurant Tusen between the birch trees of its facade, mountain streams and rocky outcrops. This, coupled with its wind-reducing and therefore view-optimising funneled form, makes genuine fulfilment of their goal to create architecture which is absolutely to affect and bring joy to the eye (aswell as the stomach) of the beholder.

Taking its name from popular Japanese micro-restaurants, temporary art installation and fully-functioning eatery, Nomiya, is raising the steaks of l'art de cuisine in the Paris skyline. For one year only, Nomiya will be replacing the previous occupant, luxe mobile suite Hotel Everland, atop the "site of contemporary creation," the Palais de Tokyo. This Parisien centre of contemporary arts is playing host to the 12-person culinary unit as part of a collaboration between some of the most prominent names in modern multi-disciplinary arts, and all so they may "offer a unique and exceptional new moment of pleasure."

This well-bred brainchild of artistic revelry was conceived by appliance manufacturer extraordinaire, Electrolux, as part of its ArtHome creative outreach, with joint input in their respective fields from architect Pascal Grasso and artist Laurent Grasso. With panoramic views of the Seine and the Eiffel tower, Nomiya is not only an indulgent feast for the eyes, but for the stomach, too, as the culinary experience is overseen by Transversal's forward-thinking director Gilles Strassard.

The 18-metre-long construct of glass and perforated metal was trasported from the Cherbourg boatyard to Paris in two sections, where it was then assembled 'on-house' at the Palais de Tokyo rooftop. The interior sees the dining area furnished in white Corian and bathed considerately in the intimate glow of LED lighting.

With all the promise of a unique 'transformative' experience, ArtHome certainly looks suitably at home above this cultural, contemporary centre providing literal haute cuisine.

Tours are available, beginning at the garden and terrace below and working their way through Palais de Tokyo to conclude at the the culinary summit; Nomiya. Workshops and, of course, dinners can also be booked through Electrolux's ArtHome website.

If you go down to the woods today you're sure of a big surprise... for nestled in the forest at the beachside resort of Mar Azul, Buenos Aires, lies BAK Architects' Casa Mar Azul; the environmentally low-impact summer house that's anything but.

Built in 2004, this striking retreat was created to fulfil a brief, the inherent ethic of which was to design a low-budget home of low impact upon the landscape and to consequently require little maintenance. Reclaimed materials and a great consideration towards light, both natural and synthetic, bore Casa Mar Azul; the realisation of architecture at once blending with and yet punctuating its natural environment.

A recently completed project in the Beacon Hill area of Seattle, Washington, is just the proof that those looking for stunning, eco-friendly family residences ought to Dwell on it. Design/construct firm Dwell Development is a Seattle-specific business whose eye-catching aesthetics and proven 'green' credentials can be accredited, in part at least, to their strict adherence of their work ethic. Think 'quality rather than quantity' and you'll have Dwell's self-styled philosophy in a nutshell. Their commitment to superiority within sustainability is, though, not merely resting upon the residential unit alone, but with an eye to its immediate environment and the potential for the evolution of community.

The Beacon Hill development is comprised of four free-standing and individually unique family homes whose generous proportions and striking finishes belie Dwell's accute attention to eco-friendly detail. Each of these residential units is Built Green 5-Star Certified, a lofty achievement indeed for these over-1600-square-foot, 3-storey abodes. But it is Dwell's consideration towards a harmonious sustainability of socio-environmental issues which takes these residences from houses to homes, where high-end meets the encouragement of well-being. I was actually in the mist of gathering some info about a different product from Magis, Pierre Paulin's "Flower". However I found myself drawn to teh image (above) featuring Stefano Giovannoni's "Boogie Woogie" shelving system and Francesco Binfaré's Annett (on wheels). While theres probably no reason to place an office style chair facing a shelving system in real life (though I guess you might want to roll about on your chair picking up books in a moment of extreme laziness). These are definitely to products that would compliment each other if you where to set about creating a slightly Dali-esque feel to a room.

Debuting in Milan earler this year "Flower" is a transparent / translucent (depending on the clear or black colowr choise) chair. The chair is designed by the legendary Pierre Paulin one of the masters of mid century modernist design. One must marvel (well I do anyway) at the ability of aging modernist / futurist / minimalist etc. designers and architects ability to continue to strive to create new forms and constantly incorporate new materials into their work. Paulin himself is now in his early 80's and this design feels as modern as any you will see this year. Personally I prefer the black, but I can see how in the right setting transparent with a hot pink seat would be a very striking item.

Maybe it's just a stability paranoia  I have or maybe it's a simmering respect for the Designer’s clever enough to make not just an object of beauty (who said symmetry was beautiful?) but also an object of improbable illusion and engineering prowess.  The One for Two chair by Italian company Tonon is a perfect example. 

Available in red, orange and white, the colour range is as striking as the silhouette.
