Lately, it seems like I keep finding my best reads by complete accident. JJ Smith's 10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse was one of those gems. How to Blog for Profit Without Selling Your Soul is the most recent one. I couldn't tell you exactly how I came across this book on Amazon, but I didn't hesitate to read it because it was available on Kindle Unlimited, so it didn't cost me anything to give it a shot. This book ended up being so valuable, I'm considering purchasing my own copy, just so I can refer to it whenever I feel the need.

Blogging for profit is a skill that has always eluded me. I knew there were countless bloggers out there, making six-figure salaries from pecking away at a keyboard, sharing their passions with the world. How they were able to generate profit from that was a mystery to me. As hard as I tried, I just couldn't make affiliate blogging or advertising work for me. To give you an idea, BreeniBooks has been around since 2007, yet to this day, Adwords hasn't sent me a single check because I have yet to hit the $100 threshold required for payout. Yes, in seven years I have made less than $100. So the possibility that Ruth Soukup could unlock the world of monetized blogging for me was enough for me to give Blogging for Profit a try.

Ruth Soukup is the face behind the blog Living Well, Spending Less. I didn't realize it when I downloaded the book, but I had visited her blog before. One of her posts, an article about how she permanently took her children's toys away, was a hit on Pinterest. I'm a Pinterest junkie, so of course it piqued my interest when it was making its rounds.

The success of that one blog post is most likely due to Soukup's skillful tactics of self-promotion. Reading the book, you would think this thing just comes naturally to her, but she explains how she has spent countless hours researching, attending conferences, and taking classes to perfect every aspect of her blogging business. And that's exactly what it is--a business. Soukup has taken what tends to be a passing hobby for most people and turned it into the bread and butter that fuels her family.

The author introduces herself by explaining how she came to be a professional blogger, herself. She recounts the obstacles she faced when she decided to make this idea her reality, including her own husband's disbelief. She delves into the mindset that kept her going, and the debilitating thought patterns she had to overcome to become a truly successful blogger. It's through Soukup's detailed experience--the mistakes as well as the successes--that the reader is able to carve their own path without falling into some of the same traps. She encourages the reader to not skip to the latter parts of the book that detail specific monetary outlets, because making these work depends largely on the mindset and dedication of the blogger. The first part of the book is about aligning yourself with your values and creating a foundation to launch a successful blog.

I won't argue that the first part of the book is incredibly important, just as the author suggests. It's definitely not a part you want to skim if you really want to take away the full value of her advice. However, the details of the second part, where she lists specific outlets for monetizing a blog, are enough to entice anyone to invest in the book. She not only lists different tactics, but specific sites to use and the general requirements they have for using their platforms. Going through her lists, it's easy to tic off the advertisers who won't be a good fit for the blogger, as well as the ones worth looking into.

Another handy part of the book is where Soukup shares examples of her own blog schedules and strict planning techniques, including her social media campaigns. It is clear she lives and breathes blogging, which is probably the reason she is such a success. She provides the reader with a link to a printable version of her own organizer. There is an appendix of resources to expand on the book.

After reading How to Blog for Profit Without Selling Your Soul, I found myself motivated to take action on my own blogs. They had been languishing for a while under my sporadic bouts of inspiration and lack of direction, but using Soukup's techniques, I am building a plan for making them into valuable contributions--both to my own well-being and the world at large. I took away specific ideas to use at my full-time job as an eCommerce Manager, as well. I can't imagine anyone reading this book and not being prompted to take immediate action. I didn't hesitate to start plugging it to coworkers and friends. It's definitely worth the investment, and I will be following Ruth Soukup very closely in the future in hopes she continues sharing her experiences.
We're in the last hours before the BreeniBooks StoryBundle giveaway. Tomorrow, two lucky people will win gift codes to claim their very own StoryBundles! Hurry and get your entries in!
On that note, I decided it was time for me to snag my own StoryBundle. The newest one is a Supernatural Suspense bundle of ten e-books that look absolutely intriguing. I don't read a lot of fiction, but when I do, it tends to be of a darker tone, so this definitely fits my scope for a good work of fiction. Here's what the bundle includes.

I love novel new ideas when it comes to spreading literature (hello--Bookcrossing). I also love supporting indie and self-published authors.

StoryBundle.com is a neat concept. They package e-books together around a common theme and offer them to you at--get this--whatever price you want to pay! Of course, the minimum is $3, but if you feel they're worth more, you can up your bid. You're supporting indie authors by deciding how much they make. You also get to decide how much of your purchase price goes to the authors and how much goes to keep StoryBundle in operation. You have absolute control and can decide the full amount goes to one or the other if you don't wish to split it. You also have the option to donate a portion to a noteworthy charity at checkout. Bonus books are available when you agree to pay a designated minimum amount.

None of the books contain DRM, so you're free to put them on your Kindle, laptop or smartphone. If you have a Kindle, the books can be sent directly to your device. Each bundle is available for a limited time. Go check them out. There's a Dark Fantasy bundle I have my eye on, as well as a CyberPunk bundle.

SEO 2014 & Beyond: Search Engine Optimization Will Never Be the Same Again
By Dr. Andy Williams
ISBN: 1494401894
August 5, 2014
http://ezseonews.com

This brief recap of the most recent evolution of search engine optimization gives readers some pointed tips for increasing search engine rank, while avoiding tactics that might negatively affect your site's Google authority. Like I said, at 126 pages, it is a very brief read, but Williams does well to pack in plenty of information.

He gets straight to the point and touches on some black hat techniques that are still being touted heavily by many SEO experts. These techniques can actually hurt your site rank, so it's important to avoid them at all costs. Williams also gives advice on cleaning up your tracks if you have used these techniques in the past and want to start over with a clean slate.

The main takeaway from SEO 2014 & Beyond is that there really is no search engine optimization any longer. With Google's algorithms getting consistently smarter at weeding out spam, the only true way to get your site ranked highly is to provide honest, quality content and avoid keyword stuffing. Write like you truly are an authority and your sole intention is to inform the reader, not garner backlinks and Google favor.

I took away several tactics to implement and found this to be a useful read. I would recommend this to anyone concerned with site rank and Google placement. I will likely read some of Williams' other books, as well.

<georss:box>35.3885425 -80.7385352 35.5953925 -80.4158122</georss:box>

Review: The New Colored Pencil by Kristy Ann Kutch

The New Colored Pencil: Create Luminous Works with Innovative Materials and Techniques
By Kristy Ann Kutch
ISBN: 978-0-77043-693-3
© 2014, Watson-Guptill Publications (an imprint of Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House LLC)

The New Colored Pencil is a perfect tutorial for beginners or those with a vague familiarity with using colored pencils for creating art. If, like me, your knowledge of colored pencils is limited to the exposure you had in high school art class and the casual scribblings you've attempted on your own with a box of Crayolas, you'll find this book to be an excellent source of inspiration.

Kristi Ann Kutch begins with an overview of the types of pencils available (who'd have guessed there were more than one) and the specific qualities of each brand, as well as the best types of surfaces to use with each type. She explains basic art concepts like color wheels, value, saturation, contrast, and more. You will learn how to create textures and use different tools to create effects. The appendix has a helpful list of each brand, color, and the assigned manufacturer numbers for a quick reference of the range offered. Kutch fills the book with both her own beautiful colored pencil illustrations and those of other talented artists.

This book contains so many techniques and ideas, you will find enough projects to keep you going for months. I had no idea there could be such depth to something as simple as using a colored pencil, but Kutch does a fine job of illustrating this. I highly recommend The New Colored Pencil to the DIY artist who loves learning something new or just needs some inspiration to get going.

Jack the Boogey is My Real Name

By Davon and Chase Washington
Illustrated by Ana-Gabriela Stroe
ISBN: 978-0996091602
2014, Bedford House Books

What if the Boogeyman isn't the scary monster we all expect him to be? What if his bad reputation is all part of a big misunderstanding? That's exactly the premise behind Jack the Boogey is My Real Name by Davon and Chase Washington, and it's a refreshing take on the classic haunt.

Jack the Boogey introduces himself with the intention of explaining who he really he and why he's been so misunderstood. He's really a good guy, who has children's best interests at heart and earned his bad reputation keeping the real monsters of the world at bay. If your child has a fear of the dark, this is a perfect remedy to what they imagine is lurking in the shadows. It could provide some peace of mind. It is a great bedtime book.

Ana-Gabriela Stoe does an excellent job portraying Jack as a cuddly, non-threatening protector of children in the colorful illustrations. Besides the lovable, adorable illustrations, Jack the Boogey promotes the moral of taking the high road and continuing to do good things, even if no one notices. Any parent can stand behind this idea.

My little one and I thoroughly enjoyed the story (he made me read it twice as soon as I took it out of the package and I had to distract him with Monsters University to get away to write a review), but the real treat to me was stashed in the cover blurb hidden away in the back of the book. It's written by Davon Washington and his son, Chase. Davon wanted to help young Chase understand how much work and effort went into providing the nice things he had, so he let Chase make this a project in which they could collaborate and Chase could get an idea of the value of hard work. To me, that's the best part of the story!

When Oliver loses his front tooth, he's eagerly anticipating a visit from the tooth fairy. But when the tooth fairy doesn't show, his excitement turns to worry. Did he do something to make her angry? Was she hurt? He checks with every member of his family, but no one has a clue where the tooth fairy might be. Oliver becomes so worried that he constructs a trap to capture the tooth fairy and find out why she didn't take his beloved tooth. It's time for a tooth fairy interrogation!

Of course, one silly boy can't capture the tooth fairy, but when he awakens to find her standing on his pillow, she sticks around to answer some of his questions. She explains the numerous reasons why she might be delayed when he loses a tooth. Some are pretty obvious--too many kids lose a tooth in the same day, a kid stays up too late--but some are pretty ingenious. "Fairies are very sensitive. And if fairies are around with a child with a bad attitude, we can get the fairy flu. It can make us fairy, fairy sick!"

The tooth fairy continues her tales and fairy humor until Oliver falls back to sleep. When he awakens the next morning, she has fulfilled her fairy responsibility and replaced his tooth with four shiny quarters. He knows after their little chat they had the night before that if she's ever late again, he has no reason to worry. He's even thoughtful enough to write her a nice thank you note.

What Happened to the Tooth Fairy? features detailed watercolor illustrations to highlight each frame. There is an included secret message to decode, as well as a page with a tooth layout and blank areas to record the dates for each tooth lost. There is also a list of ages when a child is expected to lose each tooth. With the tooth records, it easily becomes a family keepsake. Plus, it's educational. I can imagine this book in dentists' offices everywhere.

Not surprisingly, the author, Graham Gardner, is an orthodontist, so he must be pretty fond of teeth. This is his second book. His first book, The Santa Beacon, was released in 2012.

<georss:box>35.3885425 -80.7385352 35.5953925 -80.4158122</georss:box>

Review: A Life Apart by L.
Set during the turmoil of World War II, A Life Apart introduces us to Morris Sullivan. He's a nice guy--rather bland--who marries young when his high school sweetheart, Agnes, becomes pregnant. Determined to provide a good life for his wife and daughter and pursue his own lifelong dream, he joins the navy and sets off for a rather ominous destination: Pearl Harbor. He leaves his family behind in Boston while he serves his country.

Agnes is forced to raise their daughter alone while her husband serves. It's hard enough being apart from him, but then the unthinkable happens. Pearl Harbor is bombed and Agnes has to wait to learn the fate of her husband after hearing the news. Morris is injured, but alive, thanks to a fellow sailor. Thankful to have been spared, Morris seeks out the sailor who saved him to express his gratitude, only to find out that sailor ended up being part of the carnage of Pearl Harbor. He discovers the man has a sister in college back in Boston, and decides since he cannot thank the man himself, he will find the sister and let her know her brother was a hero when he returns home on leave.

The conflict arises from the fact that the heroic sailor was a black man, and the Civil Rights Movement is still years away. It's controversial enough that Morris-a white man-shows up in a black neighborhood to seek out the sister, but once Morris meets Beatrice, he cannot deny the inexplicable pull the woman has on him. He cannot erase her from his thoughts and begins writing to her once he returns to Pearl Harbor to finish his enlistment. Despite his dedication to his family, he has fallen in love with Beatrice.

The events that follow transpire over decades, through the end of the war and integration. Morris and Beatrice begin an on and off relationship that creates turmoil for all those surrounding them. The entire time Morris is carrying on this affair with Beatrice, he maintains his marriage to Agnes, so he is essentially leading a double life with two separate families. This results in his being only partially there for his wife, children, and mistress, so everyone really suffers in this situation.

While it would seem the book is mainly about Morris, since he is the key protagonist in the entire story, it really revolves around those who love him and the lasting scars he leaves. Each of the ladies in his life experiences her own degree of heartache, whether in direct relation to their relationship with Morris or the turmoil surrounding the events of the time period and how the general public views interracial relationships. The story is about how each woman deals with her personal demons and overcomes the obstacles placed in her path. I found it hard to stand behind Morris, as each time it seemed like he was about to step up to the plate and take charge he seemed to be stopped short. However, following the conflicts of the women in his life was much more satisfying. These ladies, even as children, overcame some incredibly tough issues that developed their characters far better than Morris.

The story winds up with an amazing twist, where Agnes ends up in Beatrice's care and the two form a lasting friendship that neither can explain. A single family is formed from the broken pieces Morris leaves behind. He's still present, but like most of the book, he seems shadowed by the strong women in his life.

A Life Apart is a poignant and touching tribute to historical events that forged the United States we know today. It's a stark look at our country's dark past and the struggles we have had to overcome, and still rally against today, to a degree. While a work of fiction, it's definitely worth reading if not just for the historical value, to get a glimpse of what used to be. The fact that all of these events could take place within one person's lifetime makes it all too apparent how little removed we are from those controversial events today.

<link href="http://breenibooks.blogspot.com/2014/05/review-life-apart-by-l-y-marlow.html" rel="alternate" title="Review: A Life Apart by L. Janet Halfmann has been a favorite author in our family for years. My older boys grew up on her books, so naturally their two-year-old baby brother became a Halfmann fan, as well. I think it's the subject matter her books typically cover that is so intriguing to young readers, in particular little boys. I think we started with Little Skink's Tail, and what little boy can resist a book about creepy crawlies? I was excited to read about a new release from Halfmann on Mymcbooks blog. I was even more excited when I won a copy in her giveaway! Thanks, Ella!

We didn't waste any time diving into the book as soon as we got home and found it had arrived in the mail. The story centers on Papa Bird, who decides to tell his chicks a story about how rainbows are made. It's a mythical tale that assigns a type of bird to each color of the rainbow, so children can learn to recognize familiar birds they might find outside. It wraps up with a little science, explaining how rainbows are actually created and introducing the Roy G. Biv spectrum. There are also experiments for little ones to create their own rainbows.
Kaylen enjoyed the book so much that he refused to give it up when I asked for it to write a quick review. He wanted to read it over and over again. The bright illustrations prompted him to reach out and touch every page as we flipped through. I have a feeling we'll be reading this at bedtime for a few days, at least, as he's pretty hooked on it. Once again, Janet Halfmann has captivated my son's attention!

<georss:box>35.3885425 -80.7385352 35.5953925 -80.4158122</georss:box>

Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon

Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative

Steal Like an Artist is a manifesto for overcoming "writer's block" than can be associated with any creative endeavor. Austin Kleon urges the reader to get over the idea that there are any original ideas in the world and use what is already out there as inspiration for creating a unique collaboration of what's already been done. While many of us may look at the idea of everything having already been done as a depressing and limiting view of reality, Kleon explains how this bit of knowledge provides us with ultimate freedom.

While this is a quick read, Steal Like an Artist isn't premised entirely on the "everything's already been done" idea. Kleon also provides pages of real tips and inspiration for getting out of a rut and reaching our full potential. From "fake it til you make it" to "don't throw any of yourself away", the reader skims through a number of common sense mantras that help bridge the gap between thought and action.

The book is filled with the author's own ideas, as well as quotes from artists of notoriety (Mark Twain, Jay-Z and some other lesser names among them). My absolute favorite quote, however, comes from the author himself. "Nothing is more paralyzing than the idea of limitless possibilities." This sums up one of my own greatest roadblocks in most projects.

The chapters are spotted with Kleon's own artwork, serving as gentle reminders of the theme at hand. The art is made up of newspaper clippings with sections marked out to create selective messages (think serial killer artwork, if serial killers can be gentle).

Steal Like an Artist is an enjoyable, no-nonsense read that grounds the reader just enough to spark any dormant creativity. If you're a writer, musician, painter, business owner, or really anyone who finds themselves in a rut and looking for inspiration, this book is an excellent place to start. It can also be a quick, refreshing distraction from heavier tasks at hand until you find the inspiration you need to get moving.
6 Ways to Lose Belly Fat Without Exercise!
By JJ Smith
2014, Adiva Publishing

After reading and living JJ Smith's 10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse, the success I was experiencing made me want to glean any other bits of wisdom I could from this lady. The 10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse introduced me to the damage toxins are performing on my body every day. It was all about getting healthy. I'll be honest. For me, 6 Ways to Lose Belly Fat Without Exercise! was about exactly that: losing belly fat. Before kids, I always struggled with my belly as a problem area. I guess you'd call me an "apple" body type. Three kids later, I call my belly a disaster area. I'm ready for a change.

Smith is a nutritionist, not a doctor. But with my experience with doctors, this gives her even more credibility to me. 6 Ways to Lose Belly Fat Without Exercise! opens with testimonials from others who have taken Smith's advice. Then Smith illustrates why she knows what she's talking about. The reader gets to see before and after pictures of the author's own belly issue, and read what prompted her to take action on her own. The premise of the book is not to say that exercise is bad or unnecessary, but that there are other ways to see real results without grind. I was already exercising, despite my abhorrence for it, so I just continued as planned.

Chapter 1 lists seven "Fat-Belly Foods" to begin eliminating from your diet. Don't worry, Smith provides recipes in the appendix of healthier alternatives. Most of the foods listed won't be a surprise. We've had this information drilled into us by the media for years now. However, what is helpful is the way Smith goes into detail about why each of these foods is so dangerous and what effects they have on the body. She counters with seven "Flat-Belly Foods". Again, no huge surprises here, but very informative. She then provides some basic principles to apply when choosing foods to achieve that flat belly.

Chapter 2 is all about fat-blasting supplements. I found this chapter particularly helpful in choosing supplements to add to my own diet. There are probably some you've heard of and some you haven't, but Smith's thorough examination of each makes it a valuable chapter.

Chapter 3 is about cleansing. Thanks to the 10 Day Green Smoothie Cleanse, I was already past this step, but Smith provides some other ideas for cleaning the toxins out of our bodies. She provides the same quiz that was in the smoothie cleanse book to determine if you are a prime candidate for detox, and most of us are.

Chapter 4 delves into detail about hormonal imbalances that cause belly fat. The main part is she explains how to go about correcting these imbalances. Thankfully, changing your eating habits as instructed in Chapter 1 takes care of a lot of the work for you.

Chapter 5 covers nasty habits that cause belly fat while chapter 6 covers allergens that could be causing it. As usual, not a lot of surprises here, but very helpful information to take away. You'll be an expert when you're finished reading.

She closes with a list of FAQs and a seven-day meal plan to send you on your way. Then she closes with 50 recipes. Admittedly, I'm a picky eater so I'm only able to use a limited number of these recipes. I don't eat seafood or fish, so that eliminated quite a few off the bat. For the average person, this should be a treasure trove of meal ideas.

6 Ways to Lose Belly Fat Without Exercise! was a quick read, but a very informative one. I can definitely tell a difference in my health and the way I feel since I've been implementing Smith's advice. It's really changed my way of life, and I'm an evangelist, spreading her word to everyone I know (okay, my mom). I like Smith's realism and the way she provides tools for taking charge of your own health and appearance. Smith is on my list of authors to keep an eye on now, as I'll be consistently looking for new work from her.

<georss:box>35.3885425 -80.7385352 35.5953925 -80.4158122</georss:box>

10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse by JJ Smith

10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse
By JJ Smith
2014, Adiva Publishing

I cannot remember what I was searching when I came across JJ Smith's 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse on Amazon. But when I saw it, something prompted me to check it out, almost like I was drawn to it. To provide some background on why I found this book so appealing, I've been suffering from some health issues for a while now, and doctor visits had only left me with more questions and no diagnosis. I've been slowly transitioning into all natural cleaning and hygiene products in an attempt to treat some of my symptoms. A smoothie cleanse to rid myself of toxins (with weight-loss as an added bonus) seemed right up my alley.

Smith is a nutritionist, not a doctor. I figured since doctors had failed me thus far, it couldn't hurt to heed the words of a nutritionist! Smith begins by explaining what her green smoothies are and why the cleanse is worth trying. She details how environmental toxins in the food we eat and the products we use are basically causing our systems to shut down as we overload our bodies with destructive substances. Yes, we've heard it all before, but it needs to be hammered in to really take root. The part that hit closest to home was Smith's self-assessment quiz to determine if you're a prime candidate for detoxing. Of course, I ticked off a large majority of the symptoms, so I was one of the best candidates for the cleanse, according to the author.

Despite my lack of willpower, I had reached a level of desperation, so I decided to take the plunge. Smith carefully lays out the 10 day cleanse program and important steps to follow during the cleanse. She names foods that must be avoided to get our bodies back on track. She provides an extensive list of greens to be used in the smoothies and the benefits of each type. Smith explains everything so thoroughly, you really can't go wrong. She even provides a full shopping list for picking up groceries and detailed recipes, so she's already done the work for you. She offers tips for success and an FAQ detailing a number of questions that might come up.

My Results

As of today, I'm on Day 5 and for the first time in my 36 years, I can honestly say I've stuck with a diet plan--if you consider it to be that. On Day 1, I was sleepy after a long night with an ornery toddler, so I was pretty grumpy and out of it already. This was also making me want to snack more so I was basically starving. But the smoothies were so tasty I was able to make it through. My only slip up was that I ate sweetened peanut butter for a snack where she suggested unsweetened peanut butter because I didn't have access to the latter. By Day 2, I received a full night's sleep so I was in better spirits, though still quite hungry. I got my hands on a jar of unsweetened peanut butter so I was able to stay on track. The smoothie recipe for Day 3 called for a banana, and I'm allergic to bananas. I decided since I was eating it over the course of the entire day instead of all at once, I'd see if it would be okay. It was for the most part, but it gave me a terrible stomach ache. When I saw Day 4 called for bananas, as well, I just added extra berries instead and all was well. I was still pretty hungry though and snacked all day. By today, my body seemed to have fully adjusted because I didn't feel like I was starving in between smoothies and made it through another successful day.

It's half-way through the cleanse and I am feeling great. Other than desperately craving a cheeseburger like a crack-addict, I'm doing better than ever. I have lots of energy, my brain fog is gone, and I'm in positive spirits despite the fact I recently went off my antidepressant. I've been exercising, as well, so I feel stronger. Smith doesn't call specifically for exercise in the plan (though she definitely doesn't discount the value), but I was already working out so it was inevitable I would continue. I've noticed my muscle and joint pain subsiding, as well. Oh, and did I mention the best part? I've lost five pounds! The book doesn't lie!

The author's smoothie recipes are pretty simple to follow. There are a few ingredients that might be hard to find in some areas (ground flax seed, for example) but overall, they can all be found at your local grocery store. The only complaint I have about the ingredients is the cost. Smith encourages use of organic ingredients as much as possible. If they can even be found in organic versions, which in my case weren't always available, the cost might be prohibitive. I spent a lot more on groceries for the smoothie cleanse than I would on a normal grocery trip. Once you factor in all the healthy snacks you'll need for the first few days you feel like you're starving, you come up with a pretty hefty budget. Just keep in mind it's only for ten days.

I see no problem with being able to complete the entire cleanse, so I will trudge on. The author provides a plan for transitioning back to "real" food after the smoothie cleanse, complete with recipes for healthy meals. I've found very few diet plans that were as simple for the reader to implement and guided the reader as well as Smith does. Since purchasing this book, I've also purchased her 6 Ways to Lose Belly Fat Without Exercise, so keep an eye out for that upcoming review. I have a lot of confidence in this author and am taking her words to heart.

<georss:box>35.3885425 -80.7385352 35.5953925 -80.4158122</georss:box>

Jungle Bullies and The Little Squeegy Bug Weekend

My two-year-old, Kaylen, and I covered two new books this weekend. I found them while trying out my hand-me-down Kindle and trying to entertain the little one at the same time. Both were released in 2012 by Two Lions Press. One was amazing and one fell short just a little. Jungle Bullies is the #1 seller in children's animal stories on Amazon. The full reviews follow, and can be found on Amazon, as well.

By Steven Kroll
Illustrated by Vincent Nguyen
Two Lions, November 2012

This children's book delivers in every aspect. It has beautiful illustrations, whimsical characters, a rhyming chorus, and an important message about bullying. It tells of a chain of bullying prompted by one elephant that finally ends with one little monkey. With the help of his mom, monkey gathers the courage to stand up to his own bully, leopard. This prompts leopard to question his own actions and stand up to the one who bullied him. As all the animals gather courage and join together, it eventually reaches back to the original bully. All the jungle animals come to the realization that working together and sharing are much more enjoyable than bullying.
With the rich colorful, illustrations and rhyming chorus repeated throughout the text, it definitely keeps a child's attention and hammers home the message. Children learn to anticipate what is coming next and join in. It was a winner with my two-year-old and I foresee us reading it again and again.
The Little Squeegy Bug
Two Lions, December 2012

This cute book with lovely illustrations tells the story of how a little squeegy bug becomes a firefly. It takes the reader along with the little bug as he tries to find his own silver wings to be like a bumblebee. Along the way he finds new friends who help him become his own unique self. The brilliant illustrations really make the book, and I was particularly fond of the typography and the way the words flowed along aspects of the images on some pages. It held my two-year-old's attention and made a great bedtime story. I gave it four stars because I just don't see it as a book he will ask to read again. It just didn't have any significant features to call the reader back.

<georss:box>35.3885425 -80.7385352 35.5953925 -80.4158122</georss:box>

Money: A Love Story by Kate Northrup
This Mobius Strip of Ifs
Mathias B. Freese
2012, Wheatmark

When I received This Mobius Strip of Ifs by Mathias Freese for review, I knew I would have to carefully consider my mindset at the time of reading. I had reviewed Freese's previous books, The I Tetralogy and Down to a Sunless Sea, some time ago and I know the author's writing tone is pretty heavy. Freese takes on some pretty depressing subject matter, and it's hard not to spiral into that depression due to his captivating writing. What I like most about Freese's books is that he is not afraid to speak his mind, put things quite bluntly, and deliver a little jolt to the reader with some controversy. This Mobius Strip of Ifs did not disappoint me.

However, I went back and forth through the course of reading it about how to approach a review. I found that every time I sat down to write a review, I would summarize one of Freese's essays, then go on a tangent about how I either agreed or disagreed with his premise. I was essentially writing essays of my own. I decided I needed to step away and approach this review in a different manner.

First, to give you an idea of the subject matter, Freese's essays cover his life experiences from childhood right through the present day. They include episodes from his time as a teacher, as a psychotherapist, as a writer, and the raw emotion associated with his daughter's suicide and his wife's accidental death. Freese makes his own observations of injustice, indifference, and oversight in education, as well as his views of the world at large. Much of his subject matter is tied to the Holocaust and his own Jewish heritage.

Freese's view of the world is a bleak one. His essays don't hold much hope for humanity at all, and he even references his own "orneriness". Keep that in mind when you pick up this book. If you're looking for a feel-good story, this is not the one for you.

That said, though I found I both agreed and disagreed with Freese's observations, the important part was that it made me think. I'm already one to question the reality of anything before me, but reading Freese's essays just reminded me of how different each person's life experiences can be, and how they approach each experience differently based on their past. For example, I was thinking as I read of Freese's opinion of one of his students--how the child was destined to be dismally average and basically nothing more of a shell, I thought how easily that child could have been me. I might have easily exhibited the same attributes of the boy in question, and had Freese been my teacher, he would have labeled me and given up hope before I even had a chance to start.

Of course, Freese's essay on review bloggers hit home for me, not only because I was quoted in this one (my very eloquent response of "holy cow"), but because his experience of bloggers was so vastly different from my own. Granted, I can definitely see how he comes to his conclusions, but I felt like he was basing his opinion of an entire group of people based on a few incidents. Because of this, I think he failed to see what a warm and supportive group bloggers can be, and how many are genuine in their reviews and avoid the snarkiness in which others might revel. Just like society at large, there are always going to be bad seeds in the group who bring everyone down. I hope he has changed his opinion since that particular essay.

See how easy that was for me to dip into my own opinionated essay? Whether you agree with Freese or not, in the least you come away with a different worldview and something that may give you cause for further investigation. Although no matter how closely Freese's words touched me, I could not find it in my psyche to deface a book by writing in the margins. Sorry, Mr. Freese. I'm one of those people. :)

To summarize, This Mobius Strip of Ifs is a collection of essays that will prompt your own reflection on life and humanity. Through Mathias Freese, you can see a cause for action, or resign yourself to inaction. The choice is yours, but the book will likely prompt an internal debate (maybe even an external debate if you feel so inclined), and at the least force you to face some dismal realities that might come close to home.

And Death Dreamt Us All by Cheryl Anne Gardner
And Death Dreamt Us All
by Cheryl Anne Gardner
2010, Twisted Knickers

Cheryl Anne Gardner is by far one of my favorite authors. Have I said that before? I probably have because her books are like gold to me (ask the ex-boyfriend who has yet to return my beloved copy of The Thin Wall--he's lucky I haven't pursued legal action because I was able to get another autographed copy thanks to Cheryl's help). Anyway, the reason I adore Gardner's books so much is she puts all those deviant little thoughts we have, but would never say, into print. Her books push social norms and illustrate how close we are to crossing the line into what we'd typically label insanity.

Gardner's latest work of art is And Death Dreamt Us All, the story of a sullen forensic photographer haunted by her subjects, but being stalked by something far more gruesome and terrifying than a mutilated body left decaying for a few weeks. Rowan is still haunted by memories of a lost love--the boyfriend she lost to an accident as a child. She's never recovered from the imprint of that traumatic event, and feels the need to wallow in self-loathing and despair to punish herself for events that were out of her control.

Rowan finds a certain degree of comfort in her relationship with a psychologist, but she distrusts his motives and feels that he gets a perverse satisfaction from playing mind games with her. Her recounting the gruesome crime scenes she photographs turns him on, but she accepts his advances as another form of punishment for the sins only she seems to think she has committed. Everything for Rowan is a form of punishment, and as the story progresses, even waking up and interacting with society becomes a form of retribution for her tortured soul.

And Death Dreamt Us All takes us on a journey into madness, but I think Gardner's real point is that humanity is essentially already mad, by our definition. And what is actually mad is merely a matter of perspective. Pain and torture can actually be forms of release and each and every one of us is just a few thoughts away from plunging headlong into official "insanity". She unflinchingly points out the dark side every human harbors.

I absolutely adore Cheryl Anne Gardner's books, but I find when it's actually time to sit down and write a review, I suddenly have a case of writer's block. I think this is because Gardner's writing style is so eloquent, and her knack for observation and describing the depth of human thought and emotion so acute that anything I can write sounds like the ramblings of a third-grader after spending some time leafing through her prose. If you want to read something that challenges your mind and forces you to question your sense of reality (which I do), then And Death Dreamt Us All is for you. She packs a hell of a lot of philosophical and psychological torment (hence pleasure) into the brief pages of a novella.
The Silver Star
by Jeannette Walls
2013, Scribner
ISBN: 978-1-4516-6150-7

Obviously, my reviewing has taken a back seat to life as of late. Over the past few years, I've started books on several occasions with the intent of picking back up, but my attention always seemed to get diverted elsewhere. That is, until I picked up the latest release from Jeannette Walls, The Silver Star.

It's been a while since I read Walls' huge success, The Glass Castle, but it was by far one of my favorite books. The Glass Castle was her memoir, however, and The Silver Star is a novel. Admittedly, I didn't see the words "A Novel" below the title and picked it up, expecting it to be a continuation of The Glass Castle. When I found the story line wasn't quite matching up to her tales in The Glass Castle, I checked the cover to confirm that what I was reading was indeed, fiction. I had to check this because Walls writes from a point of view so relevant and so captivating, one would think she has to be relating a first person account.

The Silver Star is set in California in the 1970s, but the scene quickly changes to Virginia, in the midst of forced integration. In California, we meet Liz and Bean, teenage sisters forced to grow up a little too quickly to pick up the responsibilities of their flighty, unstable mother. It is exactly this flightiness that propels the girls to Virginia, seeking out an uncle they barely remember after their mother basically abandons them and law enforcement comes knocking.

When the girls first meet their uncle Tinsley, he appears to be a crotchety old recluse who lives up to the reputation their mother already established for him. They quickly find he has a heart bigger than his demeanor implies, and he graciously takes them in and begins caring for them as their mother never did. Exploring the large estate where their mother and uncle grew up, the girls begin to establish a picture of their mother and the lasting impression she has left on the community.

However, the story between the girls and their mother is really secondary to what ensues. Though the mother weaves in and out of the picture the entire time, making promises she will never keep, the real story takes place when the girls realize their mother isn't going to resume her parenting responsibility and they are going to have to lay roots in Byler, Virginia. Being the mature young ladies they have been forced to become, they set out on a job hunt to help their Uncle Tinsley with the added expense of their care and purchase school clothes for the upcoming year.

Unfortunately, Byler has not fared well in the past few years and jobs are scarce. The girls are gracious to accept job offers from Jerry Maddox, a foreman at the mill their family once owned. What they don't realize at the time is Maddox has a dark side the entire town already knows about. It doesn't take long for the girls to experience this dark side firsthand.

The plot revolves around the two girls taking a stand against a vile man who has the entire town cowering. It also explores the racial tension Liz and Bean witness as their new school integrates for the first time. Through both ordeals, the girls have to make decisions most adults would even find difficult to make, and find solace and strength in a host of different places. Bean also manages to find out the truth about her father, which her single mother has hidden from her. She finds family she didn't know existed, and becomes a welcome addition to the family as a reminder of her beloved father.

This book held my attention such that I couldn't stop reading until I reached the end. Walls' characters have a quirkiness and a spunk about them reminiscent of Laura Ingalls. You can't help but root for the girls from the beginning and know that no matter what, they will come out on top. I have to admit I was a bit partial to Bean just because we share the same childhood nickname. Walls manages to make light of some pretty serious matters in the way that a child would view them. It doesn't make the matters any less significant, but it allows the reader to meander along in a lighthearted manner rather than being swept up in the gravity of the controversy.

The Silver Star is an amazing read, even for those who might prefer nonfiction or something a bit heavier. The blurb on the back of the book describes Walls as "supremely alert to the abuse of adult power" and I firmly agree with this. Whether it's the girls' irresponsible mother, the sleazy mill boss, or teachers who turn a blind eye, this theme appears time and again. The heartwarming and ultimately satisfying part is following along as the sisters overcome this adversity and make the adults face their flaws.

Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love
Dr. Sue Johnson

In my opinion, reading's true rewards come when you see yourself reflected in the pages of a book: when that book enables you to unravel the many layers of your own psyche. Hold Me Tight is just that sort of book. It is based on Dr. Sue Johnson's APA-endorsed Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, or EFT.

EFT is based on the premise that romantic relationships are sought to fulfill the human need for attachment. Johnson likens this attachment to that of a parent and child. Essentially, our need for security never dies, and as we transition from adolescence to adulthood, we project that need onto our partners and spouses rather than our parents.

Johnson does an excellent job illustrating the basic need for attachment using case studies. The examples feature dialogues between couples as they are being treated, and it's hard not to relate to one of the participants in each scenario. Even the personality types who tend to retreat when faced with marital conflict are actually acting out their need to preserve this idea of security.

The world of psychology and couples' therapy is constantly evolving and there are as many different schools of thought as there are self-help books. Johnson's methods seem to be the most realistic. She breaks conflict down to the self-defeating patterns into which couples fall while guiding them into more productive ways of relating.

The problem with Hold Me Tight is EFT requires the participation of both partners. Most often, only one partner is actively seeking a solution and it can be difficult to persuade a significant other to read the book and participate in the exercises, just as it would be to convince that person to attend couples' therapy. Johnson does not offer any solutions for dealing with unresponsive partners.

However, just to be able to shed some light on our own subconscious motivations and how they affect our relationships is worth the time it takes to read the book. There are lots of prompts for reflection, and perhaps a relationship can be improved when at least one partner can delve into a deeper level of understanding. Hold Me Tight has the potential to serve as a tool to achieving this realization.
As a fan of Janet Halfmann, I have great appreciation for children's books that tell a story and teach science at the same time. Children love learning about the world around them, and books that highlight the creatures they encounter every day help them build an understanding of the world.

With this in mind, I was very excited when Claudia Chandler's Ralphina, the Roly-Poly arrived. I could tell right away from the cover illustration this was going to be a treasure of a book. I knew my boys would be just as excited to learn about the strange little bugs they had become so accustomed to uncovering in their outdoor exploration.

Ralphina is both written and illustrated by Chandler. The story begins with Ralphina devising a plan to get the attention of the little boy who lives in the home on her lot. She's looking for a playmate, but her mother explains that she's probably just too small for the boy to notice. Her idea is to make the tulips in the yard bloom so beautifully that the boy will have to come outside and pick one of the flowers for his mother. Through Ralphina's efforts, we learn how roly-polies aid the growth and development of plant life. We also learn about their protective instincts, anatomy, habitat, and genus. The positive storyline about friendship and problem-solving is followed by two pages of facts about the little insects.

Putting the educational value aside, my favorite part of the book is definitely the gorgeous illustrations. The colors are vivid and the pictures pop from the page. These are the types of drawings that one could imagine gracing nursery walls or children's museums. The font is a little flowery, however, which might make it difficult for early readers to decipher. As long as an adult is doing the reading, this doesn't pose an obstacle.

Ralphina, the Roly-Poly is a book that will remain on bookshelves for years, as children will still find the scientific value after they've outgrown the storyline. Claudia Chandler has created a well-rounded book parents and children alike will enjoy.

Shadow Yoga, Chaya Yoga is an introduction to Hatha Yoga. Unfortunately, to claim this book as an introduction to any yoga principle is misleading. Remete describes the facets considered imperative to becoming enlightened through Hatha Yoga, but he does it in such a convoluted jargon-laden way, the reader becomes lost and confused trying to piece each principle together.

I feel terrible that I haven't even been able to finish this book. I've tried several times, but each time I start reading I become so overloaded with terms that my mind becomes distracted and I lose interest. The parts that I was able to understand easily were based on my prior knowledge of yoga gleaned from other readings and a Religions course. He speaks of various positions and methods, but never elaborates or provides tutorials on performing them. The author focuses on theory, but not implementation.

What I was able to absorb is that Hatha Yoga is made up of many layers of accomplishment, and none can be achieved until its precursor is mastered. Remete tries to emphasize the need to take the practice in segments and master each segment before moving on.

Shadow Yoga is Remete's own personal derivation of Hatha Yoga, to which his father introduced him at age six. I played around a bit on his website, ShadowYoga.com, and following the videos allows the practitioner to put some of Remete's instruction into practice. However, piecing everything together in the order and depth the author encourages is still quite elusive based solely on the text. From what I can tell, the objective is to provide enough information that the reader signs up for some courses, but can never fully grasp the practice on their own.

I'll keep trying to unlock the potential this book has. I'm sure there is some beneficial information contained within its pages that will guide me in mastering Yoga techniques. However, for a novice or beginner, there are better books available.
By Janet Halfmann
Illustrated by Kathleen Rietz

I love the colorful and educational installments in the Smithsonian's Backyard series of books. And so do my boys. Ever since reading Hermit Crab's Home, Janet Halfmann has been a favorite author in our family. We seek out her books based on her name and not the content. But naturally, a child's curiosity about the world around them will encourage them to explore the wildlife that exists right in their own backyard. (And bring specimens of that wildlife indoors behind Mom's back.) Little Black Ant on Park Street explores several days in the life of an ant, experienced through the perspective of one special little ant.

The book opens during the Summer, when the backyard anthill is filled with activity. Little Black Ant has spent weeks working in the darkness of the anthill, but today she gets to explore the sunlit lawn outside while searching for food. It takes no time at all for the ant to find a feast for her colony, and the reader is allowed a glimpse at the teamwork and careful strategy that go into delivering the food back to the anthill and disseminating the meal to her fellow ants.

Day after day Little Black Ant ventures out into the great outdoors in search of food while the reader learns the biological processes of ant survival. There is even a hint of danger when Little Black Ant finds herself in the clutches of blue jay. Which defenses will she use to escape?

While this book is probably best enjoyed by toddlers and younger children, the educational benefits can span all ages. Even I learned a thing or two while sharing this book with my boys. And it's making me almost not want to kill the ant that's crawling across my laptop as I type this. Almost.

By Hilary Smith

Thank goodness for authors like Hilary Smith. Her tongue-in-cheek guide to bipolar disorder could be one of the most useful tools available to those who encounter this stigmatized affliction. This is most likely due to the fact that Smith exists outside the medical community--she's a patient--and she's living with bipolar disorder herself. She's been there, she's done her research, and her narrative exudes sincerity.

Maybe it's just Smith's personality, but the book reads like she might have been on a manic episode when she wrote it. It's incredibly upbeat, flows without a hitch, and pokes fun at the circumstances surrounding a bipolar diagnosis without reserve. And that's the raw appeal of the book: that Smith is not going to eschew any important details. She's going to tell it exactly as she sees it as she relates her experiences.

Despite the casual and humorous nature of Welcome to the Jungle, it is organized without flaw, taking form in a comprehensive study of diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care. Smith's candor makes the disorder seem bearable--fun, even--and can ground the reader in a way only a good friend can. It offers a degree of reassurance that's difficult to cultivate in the antiseptic realm of psychiatry and medical service. Antipsychotics, antidepressants, even hospitalization seem like trivial challenges in the light of Smith's perspective. She has a talent for making every experience into an exhilarating and meaningful adventure.

That being said, Smith still manages to highlight the serious and life-altering effects of bipolar disorder. She masters such taboo topics as suicide just as easily as she provides a thorough illumination of the insurance industry and the inevitable roadblocks that come with trying to obtain health insurance post diagnosis. The reader will come away with a great deal of knowledge while, at the same time, being entertained. Welcome to the Jungle is a complete package.

By Karen Casey

Karen Casey has written twenty-three books, but I have to admit that I had never heard of her until a review book popped up unexpectedly in my mailbox. Let Go Now: Embracing Detachment is Casey's latest work, and it arrived at just the right time. I'm already on my second "refresher" reading just to keep in line.
Let Go Now focuses on how many of us form unhealthy attachments to those around us. We crave the attention and approval of loved ones so much that we go to great lengths to control their behavior to suit our own needs. Even a complete stranger who signals a notion of disapproval can shatter a weakened ego. It may sound extreme, narcissistic, and overbearing, but it is a sad reality for lots of us. It was a destructive reality for Casey which influenced her foray into drug and alcohol abuse.

Though she admits to being a work in progress, Casey has managed to overcome many of these destructive tendencies and shares her wisdom in 200 one-page essays elaborating on the basic principles of detaching from those around us. By detachment, Casey certainly does not mean withdrawing from our daily lives and interactions with those around us. She guides the reader into a practiced form of disengagement when conflict arises. It's an in-depth application of the concept "turn the other cheek."It's brilliant advice.

Casey calls her essays "meditations" and every ten are followed up with a reflection exercise to help the reader absorb the messages and put them into practice. Casey molded many of her principles around her rehab experiences, so they are very much God-centered and rely on faith in a higher power for reinforcement. However, Casey clearly notes that everyone's definition of God is different and for the reader to use their own interpretation of spirit. While atheists might find a little more difficulty in relating the wisdom to their own unique situations, it is still solid advice that is worth incorporating into daily life.

The main concept I took from the book is that everyone is in our lives for a reason, whether that be to teach us something, for them to play the part of the student, or to journey alongside us as a companion. Those people may disappear from our lives when their lesson has been completed. It lifts the spirit when one can stop and show silent appreciation for those who have challenged our resolve or hurt us in one way or another and Casey guides the way. She lets us know that the greatest gift we can give a loved one is their autonomy--to stop worrying about their lives and let them grow in the way their lives have been laid out for them.
Let Go Now is a book I would feel comfortable suggesting to just about anyone. Very few of us are able to focus solely on our own growth and let those around us take separate paths. For those of us who find ourselves investing in other people to the point of insanity, Casey helps lay out the boundaries that allow us to reclaim our lives and gradually end our codependency.

For those of us who follow a more broadened spiritual path, there seems to be little in the way of instructional material. This makes the release of Robin Marvel's Awakening Consciousness: A Boy's Guide, all the more exciting!

Marvel's guidebook is written with the child in mind, delivering spiritual information in a way that is relevant to a young boy. Colorful stories, mostly Native American lore, complement each lesson. Children become immersed in each chapter with activities that explore each concept. Marvel includes space for drawing and reflection, as well as instructions for fun crafts. Topics covered include chakras, meditation, spirit guides, and dreams, among many others.

This workbook is a hit with both of my boys. It holds their attention well with the activities within each chapter. The part that pleases me the most was the focus on building a child's self-esteem and well-being, things that tend to come naturally with spiritual training. The text is clear and easy to read, the stories are relevant to a child's world, and the message is positive. The parent may wish to explore some topics further as the child expresses interest, being that the chapters really only touch briefly on each concept. Awakening Consciousness will likely serve as a springboard to exploring spirituality.
