Most of the cleaning products I use are home made ones. Not only do they save money but they actually work
Im a firm believer that we use far to many chemicals in our homes and anything I can do to reduce this has to be good for the enviroment.
The following recipe is one I found on the NZ good morning show and has become a firm favourite for all sorts of uses.

In a spray bottle mix the following
350ml methylated spirits
100mls white vinegar
50mls water

This is a disinfectant which is supposed to kill 99% of germs. I can’t vouch for that claim but I do know it cleans well.

I spray all my stainless steel bench tops with it and it gives them a shine
Rubbish tins – it takes the smell out of them
Shower curtain. I sprayed it and left on for a few minutes then wiped off and it was astounding what came off what I thought was a clean curtain.
The uses are endless for this product and anywhere I would normally use disinfectant I have used this product and am very pleased with the results.

Botyritis in Freesia

I am still growing my freesias as I have done over the past few years but sadly this season I have mostly ignored them and the results are now showing.

Last season I had a small out break of botyritis and combatted it with a spraying and drenching programe but this season there is sometimes up to a week between visits as my life is so busy in another direction and the dire results are showing.

I had the usual amount of freesias growing but due to neglect I didn’t realise they had developed the classic greyish tinge on the leaves which is symptomatic of biotyritis. In a few short weeks the plants which were already weakened died off and now I have a greatly reduced amount of plants growing.

I had been using some fungicides  but didn’t have a prevention plan in place so now will have to take drastic measures.

The dead plant material has been removed and as flowering has started I am frantically trying to save what I can although I won’t be selling any flowers or bulbs this season until I can be sure that I have irradicated the problem.

As I  set this plan in motion I will post it here.

Coping with Dementia Relative

As I came downstairs I saw the water everywhere and I quite honestly could of cried. I had to wade ankle deep to the bathroom to turn the hot tap off then try and uplift what carpet I could and try to prevent the water going any further and causing more damage. I draged carpet up ripping it at the joins as it was to heavy for me to drag outside . Every towel  I owned was thrown down to try and soak up as much water as I could and prevent more rooms being flooded. I managed to prevent the water from getting into the cupboard where I had many large rolls of material for my work.

The insurance company was called and they arrived with large fans and all others sorts of paraphenalia to dry out the floors and walls and uplift what carpet I hadn’t managed to get up. We had holes in the walls everywhere with hoses running from the fans to dry inside the walls. This took over a week with very noisy fans running 24hrs then the insurance accessor was able to sort out what had to happen next. We had to have a new floor as the hot water had soaked very fast into the type of floor we had , new carpet, lino and paintwork.

The builders arrived to put in the new floor and I had June set up with all her stuff upstairs so they could be left in peace. The builders were rendered speechless when June decided she needed to go back to her room and climbed across the floor joyce as they had already removed the damaged  floor.  It was a bit of a mission getting her back out of her room .

Health in Dementia

One of the upsides of looking after her was knowing she had 3 meals a day and the blood tests the doctor had ordered showed she needed to come off all her medication which was diet related. As was typical of dementia she had a fridge full of food but was obviously forgetting to eat. For someone who is in her nineties the only medication she needed was her eye drops . She has the constitution of an ox with her blood pressure  being that of some one in her 40′s and a really strong heart beat. If it wasn’t for the dementia she would still be living on her own , doing her own thing and living a pretty healthy life.

Coping with a Relative with Dementia

Trying to find things for June to do was quite a challenge as she periodically forgot how to do things. She was peeling the vegetables for dinner each evening but had forgotten how to use the peeler and a knife became dangerous as she continually cut herself.

I have many planters and mini trees up on the verandah and gave her the job of watering these but she would water some and not others or totally drench some plants to the point where the soil was running out of the planter. We had so many repairs in the hose as she continually screwed it around or got it jammed and her way of unjamming it was to pull it until she has released it by splitting it. I would have to wait until she was asleep then sneak out and water what she had missed.

June loved orchids and had several different types she grew which were her pride and joy and we bought then with her in the move . Even though she could see them every day she took no interest in them any more so I had to learn how to care for them for her as they weren’t something I had grown very successfully.

Coping with Dementia

June had always had cats and dogs but as she got older found she couldn’t afford to have them so she loved being with our 2 cats and our very elderly foxy Trixie and being able to see the other animals in the paddock. I had to watch her as out of the blue she could become cruel and belt Trixie  for no reason. She would be asleep and woken up with June belting her. One of the biggest problems was her continually giving Trixie food off her plate at one meal then the next meal telling her to go away . When she was feeding her she would watch me to make sure I wasn’t looking . I felt very sorry for Trixie as she never knew whether she was going to be friend or foe.

Hot taps being left on were a continual nightmare  and I had already saved the upstairs bathroom being flooded just as the water was running out the door. As I previously metioned I was certinaly suffering from sleep deprivation and didn’t hear her get up one morning at 4am for her shower and when I got up at 6am downstairs was flooded . I didnt know whether to laugh or cry and it was made worse by June saying she had no idea how this could happen. I got to the sink to pull the plug out and turn the hot tap off . I can assure you she had done a lot of damage which I will relate in a later post. We now only have a plug in the kitchen sink which I do have to put away and June has a bowl in the bathroom which fits in the sink but doesn’t cover the plug outlet.

Every day is a new day and I have to say to this day I have never raised my voice to her and try to be as honest with her as I can . I often think if only I had of had all this patience when my kids were young.

Behaviour Problems in Dementia

June was now at our house but because we didnt have a lot of time to organise her move her we had to make a few compromises. We were in the middle of redecorating and the room she was to go into was next on the list.  June ‘s temporary room was upstairs and we knew this wasn’t an ideal situation as she had a problem getting up stairs and had a balance problem but it was the best we could do at the time.

Sleep Problems in Dementia

This settling down period wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be but it certinaly confirmed how much help she really needed. Nights seemed to be the worst as she would wander around and be so disorientated having no idea where she was or what she was doing. One night she managed to pull a heavy bookcase over and thankfully didn’t actually hurt herself. All medication had to be taken off her as she would either not take it or take it twice as she had forgotten and also she was continually putting things down and couldn’t remember where they were. During this time sleep started to become a problem for me as she would be up approx every 2hrs and because she was so deaf and had only lived by herself she was really noisy and didn’t see any problem with her being up. We were also starting to have a problem with her leaving taps on and walking away.

Agitation in Dementia

June had been here around a month and things changes really started to happen. Her room downstairs was freshly painted , new curtains  and she was happy to move into there and not struggle up stairs. On her move here the hospital services had advised us they were sending different people into the house for different assessments so we could get the help needed to support us. June took exception to this and even though she was having falls all the time she refused to use the walker the physiotherapist said was a necessity. The first assessment she spoke to the person begrugingly but after that she became positively rude and agressive when anyone came to see her and refused to speak to them, this meant that some of the help June really needed, we couldnt get at the time.

Junes agitation was so bad she would yell out all hours of the night, night after night knowing I would hear how she didn’t need help, why can’t I live on my own and lots of this sort of stuff. I totally ignored it but because it had been at least a month since I had had a decents night sleep I was always like a half charged battery. This went on several nights and I can only surmise that because she didnt get the reaction she wanted she changed her tactics and the problems then too in some ways became more serious.

June was becoming more manipulative and I have to say finding ways of dealing with situations wasn’t easy.

Getting Dementia Diagnosed

Once the doctor became involved its amazing how quickly things started to happen. Within a couple of weeks an appointment had come through from the mental health services so we duly spent many hours travelling to pick June up and take her quite a distance to the hospital then back to her place, then home. The tests conducted were fascinating to watch and it soon became quite apparent how badly she failed them all.

It was explained to her what the prognosis was ‘Dementia’ and as is still the case she is in absolute denial about that and was still adamant she was not moving and didnt need any ones help.

Even though we had a diagnosis we still were in the same situation as we couldn’t make her move but she did consent to someone coming in weekly to do a couple of the things she couldn’t do any more. The home help was certinaly meant to ease our minds a bit but the  problem is they never turned up.

Dementia Diagnosed

Over the next couple of months we could see the mental deterioration and fortunately for us a friend where she used to live visited her and  as she had contacts at the hospital called the appropiate people and another assessment was organised, this time in her home.

This assessment showed how quickly she had mentally deteriorated and she was given 2 weeks to  either go into a retirement home or be cared for by family.  I can assure you this decision went down like a ton of bricks but its amazing how family can come together quickly with trailers and quite a bit of distance to travel and move her out totally within a few short hours.

June has been in our house for a year now and I will go through the journey with its frustrations,upheavel and the effects on the family in further posts.

First Signs of Dementia

We had been trying for a couple of years to get an elderly aunt to move in with her family so she could be cared for. For privacy reasons we will call her June. This was met with resistance every step of the way and its understandable as she had spent over 70 years living on her own.

The nearest relative lived over 2 hours away so it wasn’t a case of being able to just pop in and make sure she was safe.  The area of town she lived in also had a transient population renting the surrounding houses. As June was profoundly deaf communication with her was always an issue.

Each time we visited we noticed the deterioration in her living conditions and general state of everything but still she resisited any sort of move as she didnt see anything wrong in what she was doing.

Signs of Dementia

We became really concerned when she started telling us about excessively high power bills and we found her pots and pans all burnt on the bottom and other simuilar things around the house.

June also started telling us about the falls she had had from her mobile scooter and in desperation we rang her local garage to see how we could disable this permantely as she was becoming a danger to herself and others. It was only a matter of time before she or someone else became injured.

We rang her doctor but once again privacy issues prevented us from doing a lot.  In the end sense prevailed and the doctor started asking more questions of June.

Getting Help with Dementia

The final straw came when a member of the public had picked her up off the middle of a busy road where she had ran out in front of a car as her hat had blown off her head.  He took June home, got a phone number of a family member and then went to her doctor. Finally they took notice and the ball started rolling to get us some help to deal with June.

All Purpose Household Cleaner:

I have been trialing this product for the last couple of months and really like the lingering smell in the house. The fragrance stays around all day and  visitors have commented on it and asked what I have been using.I am convinced that any product without all the harsh chemicals has to be better for our health and enviroment and I will keep trying different recipes and reporting on them here

spray cleaner

1/4 cup  white vinegar, 1 tsp borax, 1/4 cup liquid soap, hot water

your favourite essential oil mixes

clean 500ml trigger spray bottle

mix 1/4 cup white vinegar with 1 tsp borax. Half fill bottle with hot water shaking to dissolve borax

add the liquid soap and agitate

add the essential oils. For this mixture I used the following 20drops cinnamon,10 drops euclyptus,20 dops orange oil and 10 drops lavender

Fill rest of bottle up with water

Dont mix the vinegar and soap directly together as it will cause the soap to clump up and become ineffective

You may have other fragrances you like its a case of trial and error

Home Made Bathroom Cleaner

I have been trialing this recipe for the last couple of months and am really happy with it. You need to make this in a jug or something with higher sides as my experience showed that when you added the vinegar it reacted with the baking soda and foamed up . I lost a lot of the mixture as I had made it in the squirter bottle and of course it over flowed.

I like the idea of adding the tea tree oil as it is  antibacterial and antifungal and leaves a nice smell in the bathrooms after cleaning.

The recomendation is to use a organic liquid soap . I used Castile soap -  Dr Bronners liquid soap which is made from organic olive oil and is as pure and unrefined as you can get. The soap acts as a degreaser .

This product is very cost effective as you only use a little bit each time.

 Bath and Tile Cleaner:

1 2/3 cups baking soda
1/2 cup liquid soap
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1/2 cup water
a few drops of Tea tree essential oil

Mix soda and soap. Add water, then add vinegar and oil. Store in
 a squirt-top bottle and shake before using. Rinse thoroughly to avoid
 leaving a residue.

Create a Cleaner Enviroment

In our daily lives we seem to use some sort of chemicals for all our cleaning products, lots of processed food in our cooking and chemicals for lots of things in the daily living.

Going with the flow, following up on my earlier post about Twitter set up, I have been building my personal list and building my Twitter network of followers. Being new to Twitter I have been reading up and listening to trainings how to best achieve results with this social media tool. Of course the side of the coin is that you can also make money with Twitter.

Twitter Lead generation

The purpose of joining this program is to build a network of interested people who qualify for what I have to offer. Its about people and relationships. Targeted lead generation. For the purpose of lead generation I  am using Twy2 for viral marketing online. Totally free to use and set up and to build your list.

Twitter Management

Any marketers knows that a lot of time is spent daily on tasks, advertising and marketing. Any tool that allows me to automate these chores gets my vote. I have just discovered such a tool to automate all my Twitter tasks. Not only building my twitter network but also sending out my tweets, advertising and marketing my business. Set it up, and leave it run.

Its just one of the better twitter tools around, a professional marketing software  that manages all the various functions in one place. Getting more followers in Twitter made simple. There is of course a video tutorial that accompanies this marketing tool that explains each function clearly.

Using Twitter

Using Twitter is not too difficult once you get used to finding your way around and working out how each feature works. At least today all ran very smoothly when I updated my settings.

Twitter Backgrounds

There are a few backgrounds to choose from in the backoffice if you click on Settings and then Design.These are standard backgrounds which you can customise to a certain extent, however you can also create your own background and upload it using the browse button. You can see my Twitter background below.

Make money with twitter

 Creating a background image can be done easily with a few simple tools that are available online for free. These tools can be easily installed on your computer and often include a basic tutorial. The above image was created using only a free image editor.

Twitter Network

Learning to use Twitter

I must admit that I have never been drawn to using social networks, although everywhere you go online you see them trying to draw you in to become a member. I have reluctantly joined one or two of the bigger networks in the past but have never really used them to their full potential. 

Occassionally, you have to go with the flow, to where the action is, and this is why I am now learning to use Twitter.

Twitter I am told is a powerful tool, both socially and as a marketing tool if used correctly. Setting up your first account is relatively simple, with a user name and password. Then there are places to edit your account settings, change background etc. As yet my background is not done. I have made this a priority task this weekend.

Building followers is an important factor in Twitter. The more followers you have and who you follow, influences what you get out of using Twitter as a business marketing tool. To build my followers I am also using a viral marketing tool Twy2 as a traffic and lead generator.

There are whole guides written on how to tweet effectively using only! 140 characters; I am sure that once you learn the basics and some basic Twitter etiquette you can then use and adapt this marketing tool to your best advantage to suit your marketing needs.

I am a newbie twitterer and have still much to learn as far as this new social network tool is concerned.

Garden Talk News

Garden Talk News is a work in progress still. As the wind howls around the house there is no better time than now to sit down and continue the work developing the the theme.

Developing the site takes a bit time, however there is a lot of pleasure gained by seeing the progress, from a blank theme to something that looks pleasing to the eye.

So far…

Just like gardening, from when you plant your first seedling, you watch it grow and develop and then sit back satisfied with the work you put in.

End of bulb season

The end of April marked the end of another season of selling  the freesia bulbs. Once again if I had several thousand more I could of sold them as well.

Using the auction sites as my selling platform has been my most successful venture and I think this year I will concentrate on getting as many bulbs to a bigger size and forgo the selling of flowers. The flower side was fairly successful as well but it is a lot more labour intensive and with the economy still in a recession, it is a very fickle market and rather than stress myself out I will concentrate my efforts on the nown success.

I have several other ventures in the making in the greenhouse so over the next couple of years there will be quite a few changes but my freesia bulbs with still be there.

Those who have a home garden know how precious this space is. A space to just go out into to to take a breath of fresh air, to enjoy the feel of the breeze or the sun. Its our space, space to just get out of the four walls that we live in.
