I found this sweet, sweet dog on the corner of Neely Ferry and Hipps Road in Simpsonville, South Carolina. She was in the middle of the road, wearing no collar and looked completely lost and confused, so I picked her up to see if I could find her person. I had her scanned for a microchip at Cedar Lake Animal Hospital, and she doesn’t have one. I have also searched the Lost Dog ads and posted her as a Found Dog on several websites. No one has called about her (well, one guy, but it wasn’t his dog). I know that this is a strange place to post about a found dog, but thought it couldn’t hurt and I could show lots of photos. Also, I am hoping to find her a home, so if you are looking to adopt a dog in the Greenville, SC area please be in touch. She is sweet as can be! More info about her below the photos. When I brought her to the vet’s office to have her scanned for a microchip (on Tuesday, January 10), the vet said she looks to be between seven and nine months old. She felt for puppies, but did not feel any and said the dog is either very newly pregnant or experiencing a false pregnancy, which is apparently very common in un-spayed female dogs. The vet said she is too young to have already had a litter, but I think she may have (or the false pregnancy). The dog is as sweet as can be. She loves people and kids, but is not very playful. She is more of a serious dog, and loves to cuddle and give and receive affection. She is super mellow. I have had her with me since Tuesday and she hasn’t been hyper once. She may be depressed from losing her family, although she seems very under-socialized if she did have a family. Everything from the leash, to the car, to coming in a house has seemed brand new to her, but she adapts super quickly. She went from being freaked-out by the leash and collar on Tuesday to being able to go on a 3.5 mile run with me the next day with no leash issues whatsoever. I think she is part boxer and maybe part lab and rhodesian ridgeback. She weighs 50 pounds and may get a little bit bigger.

Please share this post with anyone you know who may have lost a dog like this or anyone who may want to adopt a dog like this. She will need to be spayed and get her shots and all that. She is clean and flea free (I gave her a bath and put Advantage on her). She seems housebroken, but the longest I have left her alone is 45 minutes and I take her out often. She has been sleeping in the bathroom, since I didn’t know if she would go to the bathroom in the house or not, and she goes right to sleep and sleeps all night. I really have never seen a dog adjust as well as her. I would keep her, but i just really don’t want the responsibility of a dog. I am happy to foster her until I find the right home where she will be loved and well-cared for. Thank you for looking!

Last summer, in July 2010, I traveled to the Galapagos Islands to shoot a trip for Mountain Travel Sobek. I was on the sailing ship the Mary Anne with six MTS guests, the trip leader and the ship’s crew. I just received the 2012 trip catalog in the mail and a few of my shots were used in the Galapagos section. The catalog was already in press check at the printer when I returned to the states, so I don’t think the art director had any time to select the best shots, but a couple of cute ones did make it in there. I just went to their website to check if they put any new shots on there and noticed that they are using one of my shots in the home page slide show. The last shot in the gallery below is a screen grab of the MTS website with my shot, but first… a gallery of some other random photos from the trip…

It’s been decaying in my neighborhood for a couple of weeks. At first it smelled awful and was being picked apart by turkey vultures. We would ponder how it died and whether it was a stray or a pet. Today it didn’t really smell anymore so I went up for a closer look, and although a bit creepy I also found it kind of beautiful how its detached fur blended with the leaves in an Escher-esque way. Then I noticed it was wearing a collar and then I noticed the gunshot wound in its hip.

I also took the last two shots of the expired 3000 speed black and white Polaroid film that I had loaded in my Land 340. Unfortunately, the last image didn’t come out.

As many of you know I took the last few months off to take care of my grandmother in South Carolina. I didn’t do much photography during that time, in fact, I spent most of three months in the house or in the garden. Then last month my peoples from Scribe in Sonoma came out to do a dinner with The Four Coursemen in Athens, Georgia. I went to the dinner, had a blast, and made new friends. It was my first outing since March. I brought my Polaroid Land 340 and a pack of expired 3000 speed pack film that my friend Mark had given me a year ago. Here is a shot from that night last month. I went back for another dinner this past Saturday. The food was incredible once again, the wine and beer parings were fun and scrumpy, and the friendships grow. Now it’s Monday and I’m back at my desk, getting back to work and ready to shoot again. I just had to update my blog before I had to look at that old post of my spring garden any longer. I’ll be making some website changes and updating my portfolios soon. Here’s to change, new friends and new horizons…

I planted my garden exactly a month ago today—mostly seeds, but some starter plants, too. On Saturday I photographed some of the cute little things that are starting to happen in it. I have fallen in love with how the peas and the spaghetti squash grasp and climb. It’s amazing how fast things grow! This morning I already have about ten little green tomatoes where there were only little flowers two days ago. And the little yellow crookneck squash are already twice as big as they were on Saturday. The spaghetti squash plant is wrapping tentacles around my carrots and cauliflower plants. I have a feeling things are going to be out of control shortly. After living in apartments and urban environments in California for so long, I am so excited to have this garden; I’m absolutely addicted to this little plot.

I lived in the ghetto in an amazing 100 year-old, 2,000 sq foot firehouse. It was great inside—complete with a tower. Ghetting out (wink, wink) was a bit of a psychological hardship on a daily basis. I’m too exhausted from moving 1 million boxes down those stairs to write much, but here are a few snapshots, including a self-portrait from my last moments in that incredible space of potential. Now for the x-country drive. xo Oakland…I love you!

I’m getting ready for another big x-country move—California to South Carolina. Packing is painful. I deliberate the necessity of every item and after days of sorting stuff I am mentally exhausted. I have one pile of stuff that is the “I’d like to bring it if there is room in the shipping container, but am okay with leaving behind” pile.

The thing I like the most about road trips is stopping to check out abandoned things and photographing them. I rarely do anything with these photos. I just enjoy the process of making them. As I was starting to shutdown my computer to pack it up for the move I quickly glanced through images from previous road trips and saw an interesting lesson in all of these abandoned things. Things that were once important. Things someone built, needed, painted, designed, desired. Now they decay. It makes me feel a little funny as I loose precious moments deciding if this blue resume paper that I’ve had since 1992 is worth keeping, hating the idea of it being wasted. Maybe someday I’ll borrow an old typewriter and type letters to all of my friends on that paper just to justify all of the moves I put it through. Or maybe I’ll drop it off at the thrift store. And what about this pressure cooker. I haven’t used it all year, but man, the next time I want artichokes it will come in handy. And on and on….

Today I got to work with one of my favorite clients—Cedar Ingber of Curlew Candles. We shot some of his gorgeous handcrafted candles on white plexi—just some simple down and dirty product shots for his Etsy shop, his upcoming new wesbsite, and his sales sheets and the like. Coincidentally, Etsy featured his TNT Dots Pillar Candle today in a little feature called “You Make Me Dotty“. We photographed all kinds of different colored candles today, but I wanted to feature a few Valentine’s Day colored ones in case anyone was short on ideas for a sweet little gift for their sweetie. They’re handmade and perfectly imperfect in that Wabi Sabi kind of way…just like your lover, right?
