In 2008 I worked for Backroads—The World’s #1 Active Travel Company. The first trip I shot for them was an all-guys private trip riding mountain bikes through the north country of Argentina. I didn’t have a blog yet at the time and by the time I did it never seemed to make sense to post about it. But, I think I’ve found a good excuse—I leave in ten days to photograph a Backroads trip on Mallorca, Spain with the same group of guys (plus a handful more). To gear myself up for all of the cycling, eating and drinking, er um…I mean working, I am posting this retrospective of that first trip four years ago.

Counterpoint Press published Wendell Berry’s New Collected Poems this month. I am honored that the amazing book cover designer—Gerilyn Attebery of Attebery Design—chose my photo for the cover.

The hawk flew into the big picture window of my parent’s kitchen a couple of years ago while I was spacing out at the kitchen table. It knocked itself out cold, so I quickly ran outside and wrapped it up in a towel. I held it for about twenty minutes while it slowly came to. I distinctly remember being mesmerized by the talons, while I wondered if it would survive. Once it came-to it hopped out of my arms and over to the fence post about a foot from where I was standing. I then flew into the house to grab my camera and was able to get three or four shots before it flew off into the trees. I received a copy of the book from the publisher a couple of weeks ago and meant to photograph it, but I ended up giving it to my parents since it has their front yard on the cover. The printer did an amazing job with the printing. You can get the book at this link on Amazon.

A little bit of cuteness to break up all of the sports and travel….On January 10th I picked-up a stray dog who was starved and frightened. I didn’t want her to get hit by a car and I wanted to have her scanned for a microchip to see if she had a home. Home ended up being with me. Two and a half weeks later she gave birth to seven adorable puppies. They have taken over my life for the past seven weeks and six days. They turn eight weeks old tomorrow. All of the puppies have found lovely homes, including one in mine—Bruno.

Last summer, in July 2010, I traveled to the Galapagos Islands to shoot a trip for Mountain Travel Sobek. I was on the sailing ship the Mary Anne with six MTS guests, the trip leader and the ship’s crew. I just received the 2012 trip catalog in the mail and a few of my shots were used in the Galapagos section. The catalog was already in press check at the printer when I returned to the states, so I don’t think the art director had any time to select the best shots, but a couple of cute ones did make it in there. I just went to their website to check if they put any new shots on there and noticed that they are using one of my shots in the home page slide show. The last shot in the gallery below is a screen grab of the MTS website with my shot, but first… a gallery of some other random photos from the trip…

It’s been decaying in my neighborhood for a couple of weeks. At first it smelled awful and was being picked apart by turkey vultures. We would ponder how it died and whether it was a stray or a pet. Today it didn’t really smell anymore so I went up for a closer look, and although a bit creepy I also found it kind of beautiful how its detached fur blended with the leaves in an Escher-esque way. Then I noticed it was wearing a collar and then I noticed the gunshot wound in its hip.

I also took the last two shots of the expired 3000 speed black and white Polaroid film that I had loaded in my Land 340. Unfortunately, the last image didn’t come out.

As many of you know I took the last few months off to take care of my grandmother in South Carolina. I didn’t do much photography during that time, in fact, I spent most of three months in the house or in the garden. Then last month my peoples from Scribe in Sonoma came out to do a dinner with The Four Coursemen in Athens, Georgia. I went to the dinner, had a blast, and made new friends. It was my first outing since March. I brought my Polaroid Land 340 and a pack of expired 3000 speed pack film that my friend Mark had given me a year ago. Here is a shot from that night last month. I went back for another dinner this past Saturday. The food was incredible once again, the wine and beer parings were fun and scrumpy, and the friendships grow. Now it’s Monday and I’m back at my desk, getting back to work and ready to shoot again. I just had to update my blog before I had to look at that old post of my spring garden any longer. I’ll be making some website changes and updating my portfolios soon. Here’s to change, new friends and new horizons…

I planted my garden exactly a month ago today—mostly seeds, but some starter plants, too. On Saturday I photographed some of the cute little things that are starting to happen in it. I have fallen in love with how the peas and the spaghetti squash grasp and climb. It’s amazing how fast things grow! This morning I already have about ten little green tomatoes where there were only little flowers two days ago. And the little yellow crookneck squash are already twice as big as they were on Saturday. The spaghetti squash plant is wrapping tentacles around my carrots and cauliflower plants. I have a feeling things are going to be out of control shortly. After living in apartments and urban environments in California for so long, I am so excited to have this garden; I’m absolutely addicted to this little plot.

I lived in the ghetto in an amazing 100 year-old, 2,000 sq foot firehouse. It was great inside—complete with a tower. Ghetting out (wink, wink) was a bit of a psychological hardship on a daily basis. I’m too exhausted from moving 1 million boxes down those stairs to write much, but here are a few snapshots, including a self-portrait from my last moments in that incredible space of potential. Now for the x-country drive. xo Oakland…I love you!
