What I Did Not Know About Leyte

My recent trip to Leyte turned out to be the most exciting yet having visited my grandparents’ home since I was a kid. I discovered one of its hidden, or unpopular sites. Growing up,our usual route for family vacations would be: Manila-Tacloban-Ormoc-Isabel-Dulag-Ormoc-Tacloban-Manila. We never tried exploring, except for the random trips to a nearby springs or beach. So this year, I want to make sure that something more memorable will happen. I do not want to see the day when I will drag myself to accompany mom to her hometown where we have not been maximizing our stay every time.

THE POWER OF GOOGLE… and BLOGGING

Thanks to technology—in just an hour of stay at my lola’s house, I was able to scour the internet on the best place to go to in Leyte. One place showed up that captured my attention: Canigao Island. I’d like to thank http://www.inanywhereelse.com/2010/06/hilongos-leyte.html for sharing this entry. It won Canigao, another tourist.

AT 27, I BEGGED FOR PERMISSION…

I informed mom that I have found the ultimate destination for me and my cousin- them excluded because I felt that they would rather have a dip at a nearby resort and I’m not giving in to that. When I told her where Canigao Island that is, she said that it is far and that we would need to hire a van at P3,000/day to get to Matalom, Leyte, but inquired if it was any good. I told her it had white, fine sands, and crystal clear beach. I asked permission for her to let me and cousin go but she refused, saying that she wants to see it too.

AN UNPLANNED PLAN

So we set the trip with mom’s bestfriend from Ormoc and they picked us up early, Sunday. At 8AM, we are on our way to Canigao Island. It was a fun road trip until time starts to run. Suddenly, I caught myself budgeting hours- I was calculating how little time we have left to spend on the island. I had concerns like, should I volunteer to drive us back instead? How will I enjoy the stay now that we seem to have so little time left. We reached Matalom at 12nn.

Looking at the island from afar, erased my concerns. This trip is worth it. Even if I get to spend only a few hours on it, I would definitely have fun. LORD! Ang galing Mo!

We reached the Canigao Island Resort, in 10 minutes aboard a speedboat, priced at P840 (for 12pax, back and forth). It is quite a paradise. I am amazed to experience how rich this country is that wherever you may be, be it up North or down South, you are sure to find serenity in its pristine beaches. I cannot believe I will find this beauty in my grandparents’ homeland!—now my homeland too!

So Mom and I searched for a spot where we can settle down and finally relax. We found one cottage (which looked like a small house to me), and decided to stay there, at P500 overnight. Tables and chairs may be rented at affordable prices too! I walked back to my cousins to get the stuff and lead them to our spot, I found out that they have decided, among themselves that we needed to stay overnight. Woah!!! This is another answered prayer!

THE BEST TRIP... EVER

This is by far the best Leyte trip I have had my entire life. I bonded with my younger cousins and gave them life lessons under the influence of alcohol… Yeah, that should have made me more brave and speak in conviction! No, seriously, I’m really glad that we did that vacation. Lights were put out at 12MN wrapping the entire island in darkness … but while there was light, I’m happy to see my mom and the kids enjoy themselves in the company of their most-loved people.

OFF OF THE BUCKET LIST: Five Minutes with Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago

It’s not every day that one is presented with the opportunity to interview a prominent figure, more so a respectable senator like Miriam Defensor-Santiago. Well, I have been blessed with one. Thanks to The RedWhistle, an organization that helps the government implement its law to give rightful information on HIV and AIDS, by making noise for Filipinos to hear the alarming truth about the issue and prevent its rise.

It is a campaign that makes youth wiser in choosing the better option while accepting the fact that there are people living with HIV around us. It could be anybody close to you and me…really-- even Gretchen Barreto said it.

Our Agency has been working closely with The Red Whistle organization, helping the nation hear its cries and what it wants to say. That’s how this opportunity (interview) landed on my lap. Thanks to Sir Melvin Mangada, who appointed me to take charge of holding interviews with ambassadors during the shooting of The Red Whistle TVC.

Let me tell you about the interview with Senator Miriam. Well, it almost never happened as the good senator was feeling under the weather that day. To have the senator say her lines and proceed to the print and TV ad shoot is more than enough for the organization to have documented her support. Gladly, in the middle of the activities, she said “YES” when asked for a private, yet recorded conversation (if I may borrow your line Tito Boy).

I readied a list of five questions to ask but just short-listed it to three, so as not to ‘stress’ her. I have always wanted to become a news anchor that’s why it’s a surprise how my “meekness” manifested itself in the video that I can hardly hear myself. BTW, thanks to RJ a.k.a ManEatManila (in the blogosphere), who suggested the last and most interesting question:

"How would Senator Miriam, also a professor, rate the government in terms of properly disseminating information on HIV and AIDS to the public and why?"

I suppose that question was the reason why she said, "Let's do it."

I just love Senator Miram. I wish interviews like that could impart feistiness, straightforwardness and eloquence… then I would run for a seat in the senate.

AFTER A WEEK-LONG-EXHAUSTION from meeting your boss’ and clients’ expectations, beating deadlines, extended turn-over periods, one definitely deserves a break. Personally, when I say break, it means being in- or going someplace else. See something different, to see something differently. That’s how nature trips affect me. It reminds me that there is something greater than my daily 9-6. I don’t exactly need to create anything of magnificence for it has already been created.

Let’s take the beach for example: The endless waves, the white-colored sands, the sun, the wind that makes one forget the heat of the sun, the occasional clouds, the water and what’s under it, they’re perfect. They make me weak. See, if I create things-- gosh, with the way I'm wired, haha- forget it. But how awesome is it that the One who made these is the One who molded you and me?!

Oh yeah… so think about how you could be empowered to do awesome things too.

That Little Red Heart

What goes inside a person’s mind when he changes his facebook relationship status? When does the realization for the need to change the status come in? Where is it usually done? What makes one do it? Is it just a mere announcement the start of a new or an end of a relationship, or is it fueled by something else? Hmmm…

What does it amount to? How one values his partner? How does one measure the batting average of success of that new relationship or coping up with a break-up? With likes and comments of friends who care about your heart’s welfare? Maybe…

How do their circles really feel about it? Elated? Excited? Mixed emotions maybe. One might have the biggest or longest crush on you and you might be breaking someone else’s heart with the icon that signifies your love… love for another person. Also, such move could make another person excited with the break-up that he couldn’t wait ‘til you’re recovered and ready to love again. Nuninuninu…

Relationship status update on facebook is one the most successful activities on the platform that has been invented. When that little red heart shows up, it certainly defines one’s category in the market being available or otherwise. It offers that 15-minutes of fame within one’s own circle that sparks up conversations among the network about who one’s partner is and how they ended up together—or apart.

So what’s your status? Be careful. It could make or break me.

WATCHOUT: The Comeback of Pinoy Action Films

Kim Chiu, Maja Salvador, Solenn Heusaff, Kris Bernal, Julia Montes, Lovi Poe: watch out!

Now that Pinoy Action flicks are making a comeback, these ladies must brace themselves to be picked as leading ladies of these long-standing action film-actors.

It has actually begun- with Manila Kingpin: The Untold Story of Asiong Salonga, where George “E.R.” Estregan got to have steamy scenes with much younger actresses such as Carla Abellana, Jaycee Parker and Valerie Concepcion. Personally, I could not contain the thought and be overwhelmed whenever such scenes were shown in the film. There were occasional shrieks and side comments from the audience, saying how ‘lucky’ E.R. was. “Sinibasib si Carla!” or “Nakakarami na to ah!”

But when you think of it, the late FPJ had been doing it, right? So why are we so surprised?

I guess it counts that it has been quite a while since a blockbuster action film had been produced in the country. The nation’s filmography had been filled with touchy-feely ones that perhaps current movie-goers have lost touch of appreciation for action flicks and love scenes that go with it. A star in an action movie is never complete without saving a damsel in distress after all.

Looking at the current roster of young actors, one is yet to be comparable to the likes of FPJ, Robin Padilla, Phillip Salvador, Cesar Montano or Rudy Fernandez. Some of them even migrated to doing fantasy movies like Bong Revilla who have been capitalizing on Panday series.

Yet, we have budding hot actresses who have the potential to be leading ladies.

I can’t wait to see more quality action films produced this year. I must condition my mind to appreciate the fact that while we await the launch of the next Pinoy action superstar, the veteran-ones, who can still run, shoot guns and talk-trash-before-shooting, will always be paired with significantly younger ladies.

Perhaps aside from quality, that will be the selling factor of these upcoming films.

And That Was 2011

This Christmas, I would like to make a change. I would like to take it as a chance for me to recount God’s greatness rather than count gifts given or even give myself the privilege of stressing myself out of gifts I SHOULD GIVE.

As I close the year, I remember all friends that I lost, Erich David Valencia and Manuel Galecio Jr., who have gone from this world. Both are close to my heart, them being my team mates in the former agency I worked in. I remember friends who have not died but have chosen to stop being ‘friends’ because of complications or simply having grown tired to being one--to me at least.

I can look back with much regrets. If only I have the power to change things to make them smooth and perfect, I would have done something but thank God I do not have that because it would do more harm than good and cause imbalance in the ecosystem.

But I learned from these losses. Good thing is, I am still among the living and I’m choosing to stay alive—for those I care about: family, friends and those, who, I do not personally know but are in need of attention. I am still able to adjust, with the chance to do better this time.

This year, I also aged, obviously. I did not throw any parties though, which I was once upon a time, accustomed to. But I received the gift of life- a more meaningful one. One that is more selfless, more patient and more understanding: having known more people in terms of what they do, how they do things and how they perceive life in general, I would like to believe that God sent those people to help me become the person that I am now. Thank God for them too.

Then again, of course, I am still childish; of course, I still like to party- but I have not gone drunk wasted since I appointed myself to become my own driver, early this year. I still smoke, though I have stopped for almost a month there after winning my battle against dengue last October. I have the desire to quit though. I want to give it up- believe me I do. I still have my faults as a child, sibling, friend, employee, etc.. I want to make it clear that I do not intend to be perfect. I just want to be almost-worthy. Almost-worthy of all the kind words and expressions of love and affection extended to me. It feels as if God is saying that I have been a good girl.

So keep ‘em coming guys. LOL. (This year, I have accepted using ‘LOL’ in online conversations too)

As I close the year with mixed emotions, let me just say that I have never looked at a ‘year-ender’ in this light. 2011 has opened up opportunities for me to see a bigger picture of the realities of life. It’s a shame to have realized and say this just now, but the world, clearly does not revolve around me. So it’s time to say goodbye to my ideals and face reality with optimism.

Hello 2012! I will not ask you to please be kind but let me tell you, I’ll be kinder.

On Reaching Out

Remember my former post on the plane crash?

Well, I did not stop at that. I am too affected to just write about it. That incident has taught me a lot of things: from remembering my roots to reaching out to make something wonderful happen.

Tama si Gang Badoy. Ang daming nangyayari sa taas (ng lipunan at pulitika), na hindi na nila nakikita yung mga maliliit na mas maraming problema.

Thank you RockEd Philippines. Thank you to Mai who donated the Disney sweaters. Thank you Leslie, Mike and Gang. Thank you to my former classmate in F. Serrano Sr. Elementary School, who is now a member of the same's faculty for coming with us. Thank You,God almighty for touching these people's hearts to help our countrymen.

of Tragedies and Miseries

In this imperfect world, one can always choose to look at the downside of things. One can lose to a challenge and still have the option to wallow to whatever went wrong, whatever he or she could have done to make it better. It could lead to more serious complications like poor performance in school or work—worse, take its toll on his or her well-being.

There is no timeline or deadline to when one can get back on track. No formula proven to automatically recover and cope up. They say “it just happens,” or “it will come to you.” No one can command you to stand up and face it head on because all there is to count on is your courage. Courage to fight without the assurance that it will be won over.

Losing a job or a loved one, are some of the biggest names that trigger so much of the human beings’ capacity to feel extreme pain and/ or depression. Pains that are brought about by unfortunate circumstances should be dealt with ample time and devotion for one to feel every sting, every pinch, every sharp, sudden pain in order to recover and perhaps chance upon the thought of waking up tomorrow with a decision to put all those behind and finally carry on.

Regardless of age or life experience, there are some who are courageous enough to quickly stand about and get on with their lives after tragedy have struck them. They are the ones who are mistaken to be crazy—almost lunatic for having moved on so quickly. There is merit to their efforts. They are the ones who see things differently. Not taking things lightly but taking the giant step of living THAT DAY most people would say is the “right time.” They are aware of the pain but take a full turn to face an entirely new day.

I am not one of them but I hope one day I could be. My tears fall at the silliest things, funniest jokes and moving wedding videos. You can say that I’m always the “affected one” but I’m not embarrassed at all. I have emotions as everyone has and I show it as much as I can. Sometimes I think it is not a sign of weakness but like those who like to wallow, feel and get on moving, I share the same strength that most- if not some, try to hide.

The Crash that Crushed

The plane that crashed in a subdivision in Paranaque last Saturday, has abruptly changed people's lives. Suddenly, sons and daughters were lost, families left homeless. The school, which could have been the gateway to a better life in the future, also burned up in flames.

When all these happened, I was found to be asleep in the comfort of our family home, waking up to calls of concerns from friends, who insisted that I respond immediately, knowing that I live close to the crash site. I was fine and physically complete until realizing how much close that was from me.

Watching the news, I can't help but be moved with all the images and stories of people who lost everything to this tragedy. I'm moved because I share the same school with these kids. How will they recover from these?

The basketball court nearby became a temporary shelter for families affected by the crash. It crushes my heart every time I pass by knowing that these children's backs are getting cold and they now, more than ever, know nothing about what will happen tomorrow. There has been no concrete steps or commitment from the government on how they will address the crisis on hand.

I went with my parents tonight to check on the situation of the families staying in the makeshift evacuation center. The number of kids there are overwhelming. I saw my mom talking to Ate Irene. She used to work for us some years back. She lost her home to the tragedy. Her kids were with her while her husband, Mang Nonoy, went back to the site where their home used to be to gather some scraps, which can still be used in reconstructing their house. Apparently, there are thieves lurking to steal these pieces of steel, metal, etc. which can be sold for an amount.

Ate Irene then re-introduced Ate Imelda, who has saved nothing but her children during the incident. Ate Meldy, as she is fondly called, seems to have a positive outlook in life. She was all-smiles to us while telling the story about her experience.

When we were about to leave, I caught this little girl looking and smiling at me. She's one of Ate Meldy's daughter, Jessica. She's 5 years old. A kindergarten student from F. Serrano Elementary School. I told her I also went to the same school, which made her smile some more. I felt like inviting her over to our home for a bath and some dinner. So I asked, and she excitedly said YES-- yet her mother had doubts she'd stay long with me. I made a promise to take care of Jessica and return her at once, when she asks for her mama.

Jessica is here with me now, sleeping peacefully after giving her food and bath. Looking at her, I see hope. Her smiling eyes is a reminder that there is good in all of us. Her enthusiasm in saying YES to me, inspired me to walk-on-- that if there's a chance to make a change, be better or stronger, a step of courage, a leap of faith, can do wonderful, magical things for a child, for yourself, and for the world.

Not Just Yet Pcos... Not Just Yet.

Two dogs attacked Pcos this morning. This is the second time it happened to my dog so when I learned about it, I did not worry believing that I exactly know what to do-- until I saw him like this...

PCOS in shock; bleeding profusely and can hardly move

I realized that this is worse than the first incident. I wanted to hurt those dogs that did this.

I was trying to keep my cool while gently brushing his back and assuring that he's going to be fine. We're all going to get through. I had to think fast and choose:

hunt those evil dogs out and avenge my poor muggin (I'm sure it wouldn't take long) or ;
rush Pcos to the vet.

Goodness, by God's grace, prevailed. I chose to seek treatment for him immediately instead.

Besides, this is not an action movie, this is the real life. He could be gone before I can return from hunting.

Yup. Those dogs bit him on both sides of the neck. Since he's drugged all over, I was unconsciously letting out "AWs" and "OUCHs" for him. I was the one in pain.

I keep praying that God will give Pcos a longer life than what is expected.

I couldn't let him die this way.

A Miracle in the Kitchen

BAKING RECENTLY made it to my to-do –list every time long weekend’s a-coming. I discovered it to be a stress-reliever and another source of pride, especially when the finished product gets uh, ‘finished.’ I have tried baking cookies, brownies and cakes. Most of them are hits, if I may say. Good thing our good ol’ oven has warmed up to me after a quite some time. But really, thanks to my cousin who guided me the first time I tried making cakes.

I grew up in a household with so many grown-up people that I never really learned to cook. It was only now, that we have the house to ourselves, since my cousin and other siblings got married, that I was able to explore the joys of hanging out in the kitchen to make something out of whatever’s in the fridge. Hehe. My father thought it was a miracle. Though he strongly believes that I needed 6 more pairs to hands to clean up after my mess. I think it's a process. Soon, I'd be able to bake in a neat and orderly manner.

However, my mom has thought of something new to give out to the neighbors this Christmas!

Challenge…still not accepted.

I mean, there's so much to learn. As mentioned, from doing things neatly in the kitchen, to presentation and of course packaging. Anyway, if that day comes, I’ll share some of the recipes I use to make yummy goodies. And also, if I have decided on mass-producing for family friends this holiday season.

If you have recipes: cakes, pastries, pasta or any other dish that you want me to try on making, please don't hesitate to share them. I'll let you know how it turns out to be.

Pagsanjan Day Trip

IT HAD NOT BEEN EASY… inviting friends to come with me to my next Pagsanjan visit. The trip has been cancelled twice and postponed once. Finally, on October 31, it happened. Estimated time of departure is at 9AM. We left at 11. One of us overslept and ran late. We had brekky in a fast food along MERALCO Ave. and did last minute shopping of supplies in a mall in Ortigas. While at it, we have Rab paged for as he went missing for a good five minutes.

We set forth the journey at around 11:45AM. Being the driver, I was trying to calculate our time in my head since we agreed to go home the same day while trying to keep my speed within limits.

After an hour and fifteen minutes, we have arrived in Pagsanjan, Laguna. We stopped by a convenience store and a take-out counter to get lunch and drinks for our “picnic.” We were all starving.

We had a quick lunch at my uncle’s place in San Isidro. As usual, they were very accommodating. Yet, being customary to Filipinos, they were also apologetic for the simplicity of their living. That we did not mind at all. It was relaxing to hear the rooster crow while dining. We ignored the absence of airconditioning and got content with the air coming from an old, rusty, electric fan.

Shortly after eating, my cousin drove us to the place I previously tagged in this blog as my escape place.

Due to the recent typhoons that hit the country, the river looked more untainted- there were no cottages on it nor were there groups of people hangin’. There were just the five of us- my cousin included.

We settled by a cottage near the banks and the boys began to look around.

A young, malnourished goat approached us and tried chewing on hanging bag straps and stuff. We fondly called him Ryan. We took several photos of him and he didn’t seem to mind.

One of the resident boatmen asked us if we wanted to rent his banca for a ride towards the rapids and then back to Direk Louie Ignacio’s house for 100 bucks each. We took it and set forth our journey. Rab boys pretended to be a boatman and sat at the front-end of the banca with a paddle. He surely felt like doing it right until our boat tried to reach banks for quite a number of times. When we reached the rapids, the group saw how vigorous a boatman should be in order to lift the banca to lead it up to the silent waters.

We came back to our cottage to rest for a while. We continued drinking and eating when it suddenly started drizzling. Oddly for these boys, they got more excited to take a dip when the weather got worse for a picnic. One of us, who deliberately brought nothing to the occasion, wanted to take a chance with the water. Since the others did not bring extra shorts, embarrassed as I was, I offered him mine- the exact pair I was wearing. Surprisingly, he accepted it! So we changed into our swimming attires and went in the water.

Dennis was in tights again.

Now, there were children in the river washing dishes, at first minding their own business. When the boys walked towards the middle of the river, there were cries of pain and fear as the stones beneath are slippery and big that can cause serious injury. The children warned us to be careful. When it was my turn, one of the kids helped me and the others followed suit.

John Ed began playing water games with kids and we were all having fun.

The girls, whom we know by the names Maimai and Mica, invited us to trek to the other side of the river, which led to the next rapids. Little did we know that we’re in for a solid adventure. The trail we walked on was of pure mud and occasional grass. Cow poops were strategically hidden or placed along the path.

All had footprints on them. Hehehe.

Back at my uncle’s place, had we had dinner and finished our drinks before heading home. While at the road, in the spirit of Halloween, we shared horrific stories.

One of the best crafted horror stories, I would share in one of my future entries.

This is by far, my best Halloween getaway ever.

TBWA\SMP's Thirsty Thursday, TBWALLOWEEN Edition yesterday showcased the talents and skills of the organization in setting up respective stations with individuals transforming into fictional characters to entertain the guests of the festivity, kids and adults alike.

Our department, TEQUILA\MANILA and INTERACTIVE, decided to turn our station into the most popular game for kids of all ages on iPad: ANGRY BIRDS.

We had an entire week to prepare. Being a usual busy bee, I was not participating on email exchanges and meetings on it- I was decided to just pay and do nothing else.

The rest of the team had their roles set for the occasion. One's in charge of buying the supplies needed for the set-up, one designed the look of the office: YES, designed. There was a guide. The others helped making mini eye masks for the team. Another was cooking up something interactive. YEAH.

My apathy on the preparations changed on Tuesday when I tried doodling a huge pig's head on a mahjong paper. It turned quite good so I traced it on a green felt paper and added details on it. It was good. So the team decided to create extremely large masks of all the characters. I became ~~busy~~... busier.

On the day of the event, everyone is in high, competitive spirits. The office looked like a mini-"universal studios," each department dressed up with various themes.

The Red Whistle in BED

Last Saturday night, I, together with my good friends from the office, went to BED together.

We are to there to help promote The Red Whistle.

BED Malate is the ultimate place where mostly gay people party. It was my first time to enter their haven. I was elated by the number of such handsome gays around me. In my head, all that my flirty subconscious could think of was, "sayang, sayang, sayang...ang gwapo ni Kuya!"

We proceeded to show our support to this community by helping Niccolo Cosme promote The Red Whistle advocacy.

The Red Whistle is a community-response organization that aims to promote awareness and call out for the public to stay safe from the threats of the rising HIV count in the country.

As of this writing, 7 people are turning out to be positive of the virus daily (recorded statistics).

Niccolo is one of the many groups who are making noise about the situation. He initially began talking with friends and got them together to get things moving. One night, he sought the help of the group to come up with materials that could be placed in walls for their bar-tours. It took hours to brainstorm, do ocular in BED (yes, we even went to Malate) and agree to some ideas to give to The Red Whistle team.

Pagsanjan: My Sweet Escape

Pagsanjan, that little town inside the many wonderful places of Laguna, has been my secret destination for as long as I can remember. It instantly brings me back to my childhood, to nature, to family. It's like a personal haven that I would want my closest friends to come with me to this place every time I feel like coming "home."

To date, I have already brought a few 'cause I found reasons to:

1. For our film production class; our whole block went to "lagaslas" (gushing river), to make a short film;
2. My college thesis was focused on the "bangkeros" of Pagsanjan and got three of my bestest friends up there during pre-Summer time.
3. I also recently went there to spend a part of the summer of 2009.

I wish I can further describe the comfort that the place gives me but I have photos to speak for themselves.

Going to Pagsanjan and enjoying the scenery is not as expensive as you'd think. Shuttle fare from Alabang to Pagsanjan is more or less Php100 (one-way). Entrance fees to "lagaslas" is only at approximately P30 for a day's trip.

There are also transient houses and hotels around you can scout for details on board and lodging. As for me, I always stay with my uncles and cousins whenever I visit.

PEDRING

In its official release, Accuweather.com began to describe typhoon NESAT (Pedring) as life-threatening. The government has been extra vigilant in preparing their units and the public to prevent another disaster like that of Ondoy (2009). Schools and various universities have announced suspension of classes and work due to the worsening weather condition brought about by Pedring.

I was on standby too- monitoring reports via Twitter (the most-influential and non-biased source of information nowadays) on how Pedring is enjoying the Philippines, of course for any announcement on cancellation of work (if ever)-- unfortunately, there was no suspension. So I took a shower, got dressed and gathered up courage to face the city in this wild state. It might sound odd to some that I did not decide for my own sake but I was in no position, really. I have been raised obeying authority and to not miss a day in class or work unless of course for health reasons, which was very seldom.

So I drove to work in the midst of the gusty winds and heavy rainfall. I recorded the trip and got somewhat a good footage of my encounter with Pedring.

What's amazing though is upon arrival to the office, work got cancelled. I got tired from all the screaming (Yes, I would whenever a gust of wind would nudge my car), and observing the surroundings on my way that I opted to stay for a while. So intense is this storm that even our ates and kuyas mopped and swept the floors in raincoats.

Like those who were in the office that day, I was not too eager to go home after the announcement was made. It was too risky for me to drive from Paranaque to Makati. I hoped that even for a little while, within this humbling day, that I would feel safe. See, if no one cared about my safety that morning, thinking I'd get through another city, brave the storm for money, then I should be the one to give it.

Today, someone called me nuts for even thinking of going out of the house. I know that. I acknowledge that. But see, someone of power told me to proceed. Career vs. Life. Money over what-really-matters. It's unbelievable really- that the person would go after money. I don't think I will ever have the guts to delete what was said.

Too bad, I wouldn't know where to run. I don't know who to speak with. I am at the bottom of the pyramid, the last knot in the thread.

The storm was life-threatening but given "that direction," it felt like my life was under threat if I chose to disobey.

Twenty Seventh High

I'm turning 27 in a few days but I still feel like I'm 14 with the challenges of a full-grown woman. I came across the though when I was plotting this timeline for a Client --I realized that it's the last week of the month. I'll be turning over a page of my desk calendar in a few days, not to mention turning into another chapter in my life.

Late 20s. Neither a part of the young adult category, nor the target for fun, exciting promos of brands- I can start getting content with filling up raffle tickets with a chance to win a ride or whatever-showcase by accumulated receipts from shopping around malls. I believe my hands are ready.

Coming to that realization, I was overcome with feelings of excitement and fear... I had the urge to cry but chose not to. At 27, I should know when and where to let these tears fall.

I looked back at how my birthday was spent last year. How things were so different then! There was not a grand celebration or anything but I spent it with friends. A couple actually. I blew a flame from a zippo instead of a cake, since the night went on spontaneously. Now, the day is coming and I'm not even sure who I'm going to spend it with.

Is it just me or has every body spent every birth anniversary with the same people, being given all the right gifts every time and always feeling happy about each? I wanted to disrupt my thoughts but I can say that for me, it has been different every year. I can't think of a person who has consistently been into every birthday celebration that I had- not even my parents. The only common denominator or person that is present every 14th of that month is: me.

So I was thinking, maybe I should give myself something great this year. Now that I'm trying to convince myself that I deserve it. I should not depend my birthday-happiness to another, that I, should know, for myself , the reasons why I'm celebrating another blessing of a year from God- not just so my friends can have an excuse to get drunk and wasted on the day.
