Blayne Cash

Blayne Cash moved to Gabriola in 2005, and is a 2011 graduate of the Tru Spa Institute in Nanaimo, BC with over 1200 hours of experience. She has an Aesethetic and Tru Spa Essentials Certificate, Gel Nail Technician Certificate, Nail Art Certificate, Brazilian Waxing Certificate, and has completed her provincial licensing with the Beauty Council.

In addition to the services listed below, Blayne will soon be offering acrylic nail services, makeup application, a variety of body wraps (such as Moor Mud, and Seaweed) with hot towel removal, blissful body butter treatments, and salt glows.

April Saxon grew up in Vancouver, BC, and has just moved to lovely Gabriola Island with her daughter. A graduate from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy (WCCMT), she has been a Registered Massage Therapist since 2005. For the past several years (2004-2010) she worked for Spa Utopia as a RMT and Senior Corporate Trainer. She also operated her own Mobile Massage Therapy business. April spent a year (2007-2008) at Utopia Academy as a Senior Instructor teaching Hydrotherapy – applications using water in it’s different physical states, and at different temperatures, to assist healing from different illnesses and injuries. Her post-graduate training has been in assessment, and Advanced Breast Care from world renowned Willie Fourie.

April treats a wide range of health issues:
Osteoarthritis, repetitive strain injuries, headaches, general muscle aches and pains, sprains and strains, post-sports event rehabilitation, low back pain, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular joint syndrome, pregnancy (a natural state of health with uncomfortable side effects at times), post-surgical scar tissue remodelling, breast health, and cancer.

I know that taking care of a body isn’t always about “fixing” a dysfunction. Sometimes a lighter, full, or upper body relaxation session is needed in between the more ailment-specific treatment sessions to calm the nervous system, which in turn indirectly calms the mental, emotional, and spiritual portions of the body.

Common techniques employed by massage therapists to achieve the desired result of restoring optimal pain-free form and function:

Swedish: gentle flowing movement to warm-up tissue, increase circulation, and decrease sympathetic nervous system firing.

Abdominal Breathing: helps with pain management during treatments, decreases sympathetic nervous system firing, provides gentle stretching of torso muscles to relax them, decreases internal thoracic pressure, decreases the perception of pain intensity.

Stretching: will reduce tension in muscles and joint, increase circulation.

Myofacial Release: twisting and traction to decrease areas where different tissues are adhered to one another restricting range of motion (ROM).

Joint Play: intermittent or sustained stretch and compression of joints to increase lubrication and nutrition to the area while indirectly stretching attached tissues resulting in relaxation of the tissues and more freedom of movement in the joint. (It is not a chiropractic technique, but you may hear a click of decompresses as a result of loosening of tissues.)

Rhythmic Mobilizations: rhythmic rocking or shaking of tissue to reduce muscle tension, increase ROM, and decrease pain.

Tapotement: percussive techniques used to increase circulation and tone of muscles, and loosen respiratory mucus.

Myofacial Trigger Point Release: a point-specific pressure to release trigger points (a taut band of muscle that is painful with pressure and refers pain locally or to other areas of the body).
