Houston Texans, San Diego Chargers, Andre Johnson, Gary Kubiak

Texans WR Andre Johnson missed practice on Wednesday, but he is not expected to miss any time against the Chargers in Week 9 according to coach Gary Kubiak (via the Houston Chronicle).

“He tweaked it a little on the touchdown (28-yard catch), but he came back to the sideline, said he was OK and went back in and did it again late in the game,” Kubiak said. “Hopefully, we can get through a few weeks with him being fine and not continuing to tweak it.

“But we don’t feel like there is anything worse being done to it.”

Obviously it gives fantasy enthusiasts a start whenever Johnson limps to the sidelines. But right now, it looks like Johnson will be able to play this week.

– Adam Rank

Tweet your fantasy questions to @nflfantasy. I might get ripped for telling the truth on this one, but that doesn’ t change the facts. Politics aside, Moss had almost no impact on the field in four games for the Vikings.

Is that really saying anything that isn’t obvious?

When the Vikings acquired Moss, my first reaction was that opposing defenses would almost always have to keep a safety over the top of coverages to protect against the deep ball, which would benefit RB Adrian Peterson in a big way by keeping a safety away from run support.

That didn’t happen. It would have, except for two reasons. Moss shows defenses immediately after the snap if the play is a run or pass, due to his half-hearted releases from the line of scrimmage on plays when he’s not involved. He’s also a non-factor in blocking.

Moss is a limited receiver in that he really only runs a few different routes. Even in the street-ball style that Brett Favre can play, Moss never figured out how that could be a benefit for him. When a player in this league gets older and his talent begins to diminish, he has to work both harder and smarter. From what I can tell, Moss definitely didn’t work harder.

If Moss had helped the Vikings win just one game in a big way, the way that Kenny Britt did for the Titans against the Eagles, then I believe they should have kept him. But that’s not what Moss was bringing to the Vikings. Diva receivers don’t win championships, and when things are tough, they never help dig you out of the crypt, either.

– Brian Baldinger

Follow The NFL Network on Twitter @nflnetwork.
Posted in: NFL Network

View the original article here

This was the 200th episode of “Dancing with the Stars” and to celebrate, the producers invited back favorite contestants to judge the current participants. Season 3 champion and recent Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Emmitt Smith was on hand, and his iconic tango was Warner’s challenge this week. Looks like Kurt was up to the task — or, should I say, secret agent Warner was up to the task.

Warner created a 007-like character in a sophisticated tango to the song “Simply Irresistible” with partner Anna Trebunskaya. It wasn’t perfect, but Emmitt still gave Warner a perfect score. Judge Bruno Tonioli exclaimed, “You went from ‘Mission Impossible’ to mission accomplished!”

Great news if you were like me and thought Warner was a goner after last week. The audience saved him. And thank goodness, because this week he got a chance to bring Trebunskaya to a Cardinals practice. Trebunskaya is always downplaying the difficulty of Warner learning to dance. After just two football drills, her demeanor changed. A new respect for Warner emerged after she took just one trip through the agility ladder. She didn’t even try to hit a sled.

After practice Trebunskaya and warner spoke with Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who assured Warner’s partner that his former quarterback watched the show every week. “I’m going to support him always,” Fitzgerald said, who also had some words for the harsh critiques of Warner: “The judge, the guy in the middle, was sayin’ bad things about him. It’s like when someone’s attacking your friend. I was getting upset. I was like, ‘This dude is stupid.’”

On Monday, the “dude” liked Warner. After Tuesday, we’ll find out if Warner’s 61 out of 70 can keep him “Simply Irresistible.”

– Tiffany Shine
Posted in: Sidelines

View the original article here

Driver has been battling a quad injury.

“(Driver’s) had actually two separate injuries to his quad,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said (via the Green Bay Press-Gazette). “He initially had a quad bruise and then had a quad strain on top of it. Donald’s a fighter. Just the fact, as I’ve stated before, when he misses practice, it’s very unusual.

“We felt that giving him the time off this week, he’d be able to play in the game. He pushed through it last week but was unable to get through the Jet game (Sunday). We’ll probably take a little more cautious approach with him this week.”

Packers WR James Jones becomes an excellent option this week against the Cowboys. Dallas was lit up by the Jaguars QB David Garrard in Week 8. Feeling pretty good about QB Aaron Rodgers chances right now. In fact, WR Jordy Nelson is also an option. But Jones is the guy who should be your highest priority right now.

– Adam Rank

Tweet your fantasy questions to @nflfantasy. Teams can place a claim on Moss until Wednesday, when the waiver deadline passes at 4 p.m. ET. Teams can claim Moss starting in inverse order of the current standings, with ties broken by strength of schedule. Any team that claims Moss effectively claims the balance of his current $6.4 million contract.

If Moss goes unclaimed, the Vikings owe Moss the remaining balance on his contract, effectively allowing him to “double dip” and earn a second paycheck from the Vikings as what another team might pay him after that.

Combining published reports, some whispers around the league and some educated guessing, let’s take an updated look at the most likely landing spots for Moss:

Tennessee: One of four teams, sources have told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora, that are considering signing Moss. With Kenny Britt expected to be out for an extended period of time with a hamstring injury, the need is there for the Titans. According to The Tennessean, Jeff Fisher said the team would discuss the receiver. “I’ve had every player in the building come to my backdoor and say, ‘Go get him. Go get him,’ ” Fisher said. The Titans are No. 22 in waiver wire order.

St. Louis: This move would be atypical for the Rams, who may be worried about exposing rookie QB Sam Bradford and a young group of receivers to Moss’ behind-the-scenes behavior. Still, the 4-4 Rams are in contention and among the four teams reported by La Canfora to be at least discussing the matter. NFL Network analyst Charles Davis said Moss is a good fit on the field for the Rams, and Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch believes the Rams should take the chance. The Rams are No. 13 in waiver wire order.

Oakland: Why? Because they always make these lists, and because, why not? With Al Davis, you just never know. The Raiders are No. 14.

New York: As in Jets. Senior writer Steve Wyche lists the Jets as one of two frontrunners to put a claim in on Moss. The Jets have a crowded field at receiver, but the notion is it could represent a move to block the Patriots. The Jets are No. 30, two spots ahead of the Patriots.

New England: Wow. Moss was well-liked (we think) by his teammates in New England, the team understands how to deal with him, and he could come at a bargain-basement price (not to mention the third-round pick they get when they dealt him to Minnesota) if they don’t claim him on waivers. Plus, Moss is playing for his next contract and presumably will be on his best behavior. One of the favorites, according to Wyche. Several GMs told La Canfora that they believe Moss ends up here.

Miami: Another of the four teams on La Canfora’s list, and a team linked to Moss from the start. The Dolphins already acquired Brandon Marshall, and Wyche notes Tony Sparano isn’t big on personality-driven players. Like the Jets, the Dolphins could do this, in part, to block the Patriots. Another source – The Miami Herald — says the Dolphins are interested. Miami is at No. 18.

Washington: I continue to hear conflicting rumblings on the Redskins. How conflicting? One source with knowledge of the situation says it definitely won’t happen; another lists the Redskins as the favorite. Go figure. The Redskins have a definite need at receiver, and Daniel Snyder is Daniel Snyder. I believe the notion that if the Redskins don’t claim Moss via waivers, they’re probably out of the running.

It’s also possible that no teams claim Moss, as NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi has reported this week. If Moss is claimed, we should have some type of answer by tomorrow.

– Frank Tadych
Posted in: NFL Network

View the original article here

Ravens — Bye came at great time. Donte Stallworth’s return might help some of their issues vs. Cover 2.

2.) Saints — Big, big win for them, and Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas will be back sooner rather than later. This defense is much more sound than last year, and the offense will come around.

3.) Steelers — It’s a two-horse race in the AFC North. No shame in losing that game Sunday night.

4.) Patriots — Five straight wins over some very stout competition. Randy who?

5.) Packers — If they win like that on Aaron Rodgers’ worst day, then I continue to like their chances.

6.) Giants — Looking a lot like the Super Bowl team of a few years back.

7.) Titans — Lost to a desperate team, but I think they’ll be playing postseason football.

8.) Jets — Amid all the hype, I feel like I’ve been the only one saying the QB still barely completes half his passes, he will definitely start turning it over, and I can’t see L.T. keeping this pace all season. That’s just me.

9.) Colts — Not sure they will ever get healthy enough to be what we’re used to from them. But always in contention.

10.) Falcons — Want to see them bring it against more physical opponents.

11.) Eagles — I expect them to make a nice second-half push.

12.) Texans — Sweeping the Colts was always gonna be tough.

13.) Dolphins — If they could only play as gritty at home as on the road.

14.) Chiefs – Seem to be a team of destiny, getting lots of breaks. Oakland provides an interesting test.

15.) Bucs – They do it the hard way … but they do it. 5-2? That’s pretty amazing.

16.) Raiders – I believed in the offseason. I’m starting to believe again. 500 more yards on offense? Darrius Heyward-Bey has a pulse?

17.) Chargers — A statement win, without any receivers to speak of against a very physical opponent. Didn’t think they had that in them.

18.) Vikings — I like them more with Tarvaris Jackson at the helm.

19.) Lions — Matt Stafford is gonna light it up. If they could just win on the road. Oh, and Ndamukong Suh is a total beast.

20.) Rams – Sam Bradford has gone almost 100 passes between picks. If they could just win on the road …

21.) Seahawks – Horrible loss, but in the NFC West that kind of stuff can be quickly forgiven.

22.) Jaguars — Playing against Dallas makes everyone look better, but man, Davis Garrard, Mike Sims-Walker and MJD looked like the triplets Sunday.

23.) Redskins — Been winning with smoke and mirrors — offense is “garbage” as Chris Cooley calls it. Defense is ridiculously porous, and now they have a QB controversy on top of it.

24.) Bengals — Remind me, which one is Batman, again? And is Marvin Lewis “The Riddler”?

25.) Bears — I think this team implodes in the second half. I think they lose to Buffalo in Toronto on Sunday.

26.) 49ers — Troy Smith to the rescue? Dare I say they might not be dead yet?

27.) Cowboys – If a pass catcher could have held on to the ball every now and again Sunday, they could have stayed in that game.

28.) Browns — Have a hard time seeing them finish strong with that QB situation.

29.) Cardinals — They have an even worse QB situation.

30.) Broncos — The last 12 months have been a complete free fall. But hey, they’ve got Tim Tebow!

31.) Bills — I know they’re still winless. But they’ve got more going for them right now than the Panthers.

32.) Panthers — At what point do you go back to Jimmy Clausen?

– Jason La Canfora

Follow me on Twitter @JasonLaCanfora and follow the NFL Network @nflnetwork.
Posted in: NFL Network

View the original article here

You know I’m going to tell you why.

The most critical component is Titans coach Jeff Fisher and his coaching staff. This staff is tight, and it’s full of men’s men. Fisher has the patience of Jobe. Really. Don’t forget, Fisher took the organization on a three-year nomadic wandering in the wilderness from Houston to Memphis to Nashville. They were 8-8 each season, a time when most organizations would have faltered.

Fisher had to deal with Albert Haynesworth, and we barely heard anything about it. He had to handle Adam Jones. He’s been very patient with Vince Young through his periods of growth and maturity, and deftly handled the quarterback switches with Kerry Collins.

Fisher has surrounded himself with real men on his coaching staff — guys llike Jim Washburn, who is the best defensive line coach in the business. Mike Munchak is a former player who is a kick-butt coach, and a man among men. There’s also Dave McGinnis. Most people don’t realize defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil was an academic and athletic All-American at Arizona.

This group is very deep with men of character. You can’t just walk in the Titans’ building and think you’re going to rule the roost because you’re Randy Moss. You won’t get past the coaches, let alone the players. It won’t happen. This is the right environment, and Moss’ ego won’t swell to a point where it impacts the team in a negative way. That won’t happen.

The other part of this equation is the on-field aspect. Can you imagine an offense with arguably the fastest receiver in the game in Moss, the fastest running back in Chris Johnson and the fastest quarterback in Young? Who wants to defend that?

Without Kenny Britt, who was coming into his own before hurting his hamstring, I believe Moss helps this team.

In my mind, Moss is a Hall of Fame player. He’s still a great player if he brings three things to the field: passion, intensity and effort. Without those three things, Moss is a one-trick pony. He’s a deep threat and nothing else. Even solely as a deep threat, Moss will lift coverage for underneath receivers, keep defenders away from the line of scrimmage and still provide a down-the-field target for Young.

Conventional wisdom says Moss will be on his best behavior because he’s playing for his next contract. Hopefully, being jettisoned by two teams in the last month will help quell his ego and offer enough humility to shut his mouth for the next eight weeks.

The Titans have a shot to win the division. They’re the only team not named the Colts to win it in recent seasons. They have the structure, as a team, to absorb a player like Moss. And it all starts with Fisher.

– Solomon Wilcots

Follow The NFL Network on Twitter @nflnetwork.
Posted in: NFL Network

View the original article here

The Patriots are expected to receive a roster exemption to be allowed to carry 54 players, although head coach Bill Belichick and director of player personnel Nick Caserio didn’t offer many details as part of a conference call Tuesday. Belichick and Caserio indicated Mankins will be evaluated on a daily basis during the week, and the players who prepare best will play against the Browns.

When he’s up to speed, Mankins presumably falls back into his left guard spot between LT Matt Light and C Dan Koppen, which has been held admirably by Dan Connolly.

While Mankins has been at odds with the Patriots throughout the offseason over failed contract negotiations, at one point demanding a trade, he’s back, and Belichick doesn’t sound too upset about the mid-season addition. In fact, he even said it twice.

“I met with him this morning, it’s good to have him back with us,” Belichick said. ”A great player and person for our football team, he’s tough, he’s smart, he’s dependable, you can’t have too many players like that on your football team. We’re glad to have him back.”

Mankins ultimately reported two weeks before the Nov. 16 deadline to gain an accrued season, and will help the Patriot win games. That’s usually the bottom line with Belichick.

– Frank Tadych
Posted in: Around The Web

View the original article here

The series of explanations that followed in the days after the benching seemed to only muddle the situation, and bring about questions over McNabb’s future in Washington and the trust the team has in the player who was thought to be their franchise quarterback.

To his credit — and perhaps the preservation of his next contract — McNabb has mostly taken the high road on the matter.

But the topic is still hot around the NFL Network, and with the Redskins on their bye week, isn’t likely to dissipate from our consciousness. This one still has legs, and these stories go, we’re slowly but surely getting more and more of the truths involved.

Quarterback turned NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner is no stranger to these situations, and recently shared some of his thoughts:

“I couldn’t figure it out then. And then hearing coach Shanahan explain a little bit more over the last couple days, I’m even more perplexed with it.

“To say that he had some hamstring issues or he hasn’t run the two-minute drill the last couple weeks and [they weren't] sure he was in condition to do it? I mean, this is McNabb we’re talking about. He’s been out there every single snap of all these other games, and you’re going to tell me that he can’t finish out the two-minute drive and doesn’t have the stamina and endurance to do that? Really a weird situation. I couldn’t make sense of it. I don’t know why it was done.

“I think it does lead to questions of “why” in the locker room. If you take out your leader and the guy that you’ve really built this team around this year, and you take him out in the two-minute drill and say ‘We don’t have the confidence in you in this kind of situation to win a game for us,’ I think it raises some questions as to where they’re going and what the leadership of that team is. I wonder if it raises questions to the teammates and in the locker room on why that was done.

“If they’re asking the same questions as us, there’s got to be something more to it because it just doesn’t make sense.”

What is going on in Washington? On the surface, the initial benching and following cover-up that few are buying is nothing but odd. To be fair, the Redskins coaching staff sees McNabb every day, and knows more about their quarterback better than they seem to be getting credit for. The handling of the situation, and its snowballing effect, likely raises questions and starts conversations about trust, loyalty and leadership in the corners of the locker room.

That’s what the Redskins don’t need.

– Frank Tadych

Follow The NFL Network on Twitter @nflnetwork.
Posted in: NFL Network

View the original article here

But I’m starting to take notice of the growth of the Rams under coach Steve Spagnuolo. His ability to keep the Rams following him, and believing in his plan, has been excellent.

The biggest change I’m seeing though is one defense, where the Rams have finally turned the corner.

What happens with many coaches when they become head coaches is that they start to lose that touch of coaching the game. It doesn’t happen necessarily with offensive coaches, who often continue to call plays. What Spagnuolo does is work very closely with defensive coordinator Ken Flajole to be involved in calling the game. Flajole handles first and second downs, while Spagnuolo becomes involved in third downs and long-yardage situations. The two have a great relationship in calling a game together, and it’s the avenue in which Spagnuolo keeps himself involved.

The results have been tangible, because the Rams are a defense that has made the leap. They’re allowing 17.6 points per game, which is ranked ninth overall, and that’s including the 44 points they surrendered to the Lions. Outside of that performance, the Rams haven’t allowed more than 18 points in any game this season.

The Rams are getting it done with largely the same cast from last season’s 1-15 team. They didn’t make the big-name offseason addition who lights up the stat sheet. Defensive tackle Fred Robbins has made a big impact after coming over from the Giants and is playing well. James Butler, in his second season since leaving the Giants, is playing well at safety. Craig Dahl, another former Giant who Spagnuolo was familiar with, is also playing well. Spagnuolo brought in guys who knew him, knew his system and are playing better than people thought possible.

We’re not looking at a bunch of stars on the Rams defense. O.J. Atogwe is a very good safety. And after blogging about James Laurinaitis last week, he went out and made some splash plays against the Panthers. I like to see that.

Spagnuolo’s defense has taken on his personality, and it’s fun to watch. The fact that the Rams are 4-4 doesn’t excite a lot of people, but that’s OK. Keep in mind it is the NFC West.

The Rams have four of the next five games on the road, and that’s the proving ground. That’s where we find out about teams who are trying to take the next step. Ordinarily, with a rookie quarterback and a growing team, that’s a recipe for losses. But the fact we’re looking at the Rams and not considering that a lock to happen, to me that’s a credit to the Rams and how they’re getting it done.

– Charles Davis

Follow me on Twitter @CFD22 and follow The NFL Network @nflnetwork.
Posted in: NFL Network

View the original article here

The player known as “Megatron” has scored seven touchdowns in his last four games, and is doing it with a bum shoulder.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz told reporters Monday that Johnson’s injured shoulder is not doing well, and that Johnson had to pull himself out of a few plays against the Redskins in order to recover. That not only makes his three touchdown performance even more impressive, but also shows that there is no reason to panic for fantasy owners.

Sure, Johnson could take a serious shot to his shoulder, but that is the reality for every player. He is going to be a great fantasy option going forward, and Lions QB Matthew Stafford is an excellent pickup if he is available in your league. Although, maybe not this week, as the Jets pose a daunting matchup.

– Adam Rank

Tweet your fantasy questions to @nflfantasy. Moss will be put on waivers Tuesday, opening the window for teams to put in a claim.

End of story? Not so fast.

The latest Purple Drama has several underlying currents, one of which breached the surface during Moss’ second exodus from Minnesota: Has Childress lost the Vikings’ locker room?

It’s not a new concept to hear such rumblings indirectly from Minnesota, but these rumblings also haven’t gone away.

“Clearly, in Minnesota, there is some disconnect between the head coach and a lot of the other players,” Michael Lombardi told NFL Network. “This is just the tip of the iceberg. I think you’re going to see more and more of this start to happen in Minnesota. It’s been permeating throughout the league about the unhappiness of some players there.”

Lombardi isn’t ruling out that the “disconnect” that exists between Childress and the rest of the Vikings could put him in danger of losing his job.

“Right now, I wouldn’t rule anything out in Minnesota,” Lombardi said.

It’s difficult to know how many of the players in Minnesota supported the removal of Moss, who has always been known as a great teammate. The question in Minnesota now seems to be whether Childress still has a hold on the players who remain.

– Frank Tadych

Follow The NFL Network on Twitter @nflnetwork.
Posted in: NFL Network

View the original article here

In the 24 hours that follow, the other 31 teams can claim Moss, starting in inverse order of the current standings, with ties broken by strength of schedule. Any team that claims Moss effectively claims the balance of his current contract.

Still, NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi expects Moss to clear waivers.

If Moss does go unclaimed, the Vikings are on the hook for the balance of his salary. That scenario allows Moss to “double dip,” getting a paycheck from the Vikings as well as any other team that signs him for the remainder of the season.

So let the speculation begin … Where could Moss land? What teams represent the best fit?

Agent Joel Segal told the Star Tribune that he has already received calls from the Dolphins and Seahawks. NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora noted that after texting with a few GMs, several believe he could end up back with the Patriots, which could only happen if every other team passes.

An argument can be made that a number of teams — the Redskins, Rams, Bears, Dolphins, Raiders, Chiefs and Patriots — could all use Moss.

NFL Network analyst Charles Davis makes a strong argument that the Rams (No. 13 on the waiver wire order) would represent a strong fit for Moss.

“I see that being a real discussion point at Rams park today,” Davis said. “That might be a spot that the Rams could take a shot, because they can win in the NFC West.”

Of course, there’s still the chance in this already strange story — however slim — the Vikings don’t end up placing Moss on waivers at all. And now some fantasy enthusiasts are wondering if Britt should be dropped from their team.

Do not be so hasty.

Hamstring injuries can be tricky. Look at Chargers WRs Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee. Those guys have been out what seems like half of the season with hamstring injuries, and they will likely miss this week, too. So the impulse to drop Britt is understandable. Just do not act on it.

There were a number of you — me included — who toyed with the idea of dropping Raiders RB Darren McFadden when he struggled with his hamstring issues. But we were rewarded for our patience.

Britt has shown enough this season that he likely will reward your loyalty if we can just sit tight for the next couple of weeks. Besides, we all know that familiar refrain, sometimes the best moves are the ones you do not make.

And while I hate to leave you on that cliché, just hold on to Britt.

– Adam Rank

Tweet your fantasy questions to @nflfantasy. Now that he’s out of the Vikings offense, the stock of Brett Favre and Percy Harvin are heading south.

In fact, I’d be dropping Favre if a quarterback like Matthew Stafford or Ryan Fitzpatrick is still on the waiver wire. Owners shouldn’t make as drastic a move with Harvin, but his numbers seem destined to slide.

The Florida product is a perfect fit for the slot, but he could be moved to the outside with Moss no longer in the mix. That will mean more double teams and fewer fantasy points.

On a positive note, Visanthe Shiancoe should see his targets increase in the coming weeks. Look for him to re-emerge as a No. 1 fantasy tight end. Owners in larger leagues should also look to add Bernard Berrian, who figures to start until Sidney Rice is back.

Speaking of Rice, he’s a nice add-and-stash player if you have the roster room.

– Michael Fabiano

Want daily fantasy football advice? Consider the “Playbook” analysts unconvinced. Sterling Sharpe, Joe Theismann and Brian Baldinger all predict the Falcons will knock off the Buccaneers in a crucial NFC South showdown.

All three experts also see the Ravens handing the Dolphins their first road loss of the season.

For those of you who feed off conflict, there is still plenty of that among our prognosticators. Sharpe is going with the Raiders this week, while Theismann and Baldinger picked the Chiefs. Baldinger is on his own in siding with the Chargers over the Texans.

Without further ado, take a look at all of their Week 9 picks:

“Playbook” combines Xs-and-Os analysis of each NFL game with roundtable debates on the NFL’s hottest topics.
