I am passionate about making the world a better place one family at a time. I believe making a difference means helping women and their families birth the way they choose, surrounded by love and support.

<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="self" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/BrevardMidwife" />
<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="hub" href="http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com/" />

The Business of Being Born

The documentary film by Ricki Lake is now free for viewing! Yea! – the allocations are the same in both chambers – which means birth centers will not go to conference. It looks like the birth centers took a little shave but not as bad as had been indicated. However it is not over – until the Governor signs the budget. Again – this is only a preliminary report – do not take as the final word! Things do look like they are moving forward.

ACTION NEEDED – Now is the time to thank your legislators. Please thank them for helping pregnant woman to have healthier babies and keeping healthy proven choices for pregnant women in the state of Florida. I am attaching a spread sheet of those that are on the Senate/House Health appropriations committees. If you are a constituent (vote in their district) – please send a hand written note of thanks NOW. Also please shoot me a quick e-mail so that I know who has been thanked. Do not e-mail as this time of the session there way to many e-mails for them to keep up with.

INTEREST

CS/HB 7209 PCB HHSC-11-02
Medicaid
Limitation of Noneconomic Damages for Medicaid Providers – The bill amends 766.118, F.C., to create a limitation on noneconomic damages for negligence of practitioners (includes chapter 467 midwifery) for providing services to Medicaid recipients. The amount of noneconomic damages is limited to $300,000 per person; however no practitioner individually will be liable for more than $200,000.

SB 732 – Guns/Doctors –
General Privacy of Firearms Owners; Provides that inquiries by physicians or other medical personnel concerning the ownership of a firearm by a patient or the family of a patient or the presence of a firearm in a private home or other domicile of a patient or the family of a patient violates the privacy of the patient or the patient's family members, respectively. Prohibits entry of certain information concerning firearms into medical records or disclosure of such information by specified individuals. Provides noncriminal penalties. Provides for prosecution of violations, etc

Was not sure if this would apply to licensed midwives - but did monitor. The bill has stalled in the Senate Health Regulation Committee. (TP aka temporarily passed – which means they can bring the bill back at any time). As you might expect the gun rights groups are pushing this bill. I know that pediatricians typically when speaking with parents ask about child safety which often includes - if you own a gun – make sure your keep in locked. The Florida PTA signed onto a letter from the Florida Pediatric Society opposing this bill.

HB 1127 – Ultrasound before Abortion
If passed all women seeking an abortion would be required to have an ultrasound and given the opportunity to view before they make a decision.
HB 561/SB 122 - Relating to Sudden Unexpected Infant Death – still being heard in committees.
SB 702/HB 471 – Relating to Umbilical Cord Blood Banking - this bill is traveling – in budget presently – good chance this bill will become law.
HB 779/ SB 106 - Relating to Restraining of Incarcerated Pregnant Women – is moving – with a couple more committee stops. I am going to take this one off future reports – unless one of you goes to the jails to attend to pregnant women.
SB 1056/HB 793 – Relating to Infant Eye Care – no movement.
SB 528/0114 – Relating to Creating of the Department of Health and Human Services – Speaker Cannon previously appointed special committee to research the merger. Presently there does not seem to be much traction.
Council of Midwifery – remain in MQA under the DOH.
Please always let me know if you have questions – prefer questions in e-mail. It is a crazy time in Tally and I love wearing the white hat on behalf of licensed midwives and birth centers.

The Real Cost of Early Elective Deliveries

The Real Cost of Early Elective Deliveries | The Health Care Blog
thehealthcareblog.com
What if I told you that across the country there’s a procedure being performed on pregnant women that makes their newborns more likely to end up sick and in a $3,000-a-day Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)?
