Have you ever wondered how the price of beer differs around the world? Perhaps when traveling abroad you were outraged at the price of that local pint and felt ripped off? Or maybe you’ve been on vacation and were shocked by just how cheap the beer was? Well, the fine folks over at Amica-International put together a graphic showing exactly how much beer you can get for your money as you traverse our globe. How does your country compare?

Firstly, Amica chose to use the dollar as this is the most common currency used internationally, and they chose to base the calculations on a $1 benchmark to offer a fair comparison. They decided to display our findings on a 568ml pint pot, instead of the obvious map choice, so you could visualize exactly how much beer you would get for your money.

If you’re looking for the cheapest pints in the world, based on Amica’s research, Paraguay and Vietnam are the best countries to visit. At just one dollar for a beer (that’s in a bar, not the supermarket) you won’t need to blow too much of your booze-budget to to imbibe. Just one anecdotal piece of evidence; on our honeymoon (a cruise to the Caribbean islands), I found that the local brews, Carib & Presidente (both delicious and refreshing) were incredibly, incredibly cheap. I was able to drink ’til my heart was content for nearly nothing at all. I would highly recommend the Caribbean not just for the friendly beer prices, but to experience a small slice of paradise in general!

Enjoying a very modestly priced Carib lager on St. Kitts

What’s that you say? You have just a little too much money burning a hole in your pocket? Well, you’re in luck! The most expensive bar prices for a pint around the globe, according to Amica’s research, are in Iceland. $12.75 is the price you’d need to pay in a Reykjavik bar for a beer! Just for comparison, for that money, you could booze your way from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi! Second on the list is Oslo, Norway where it would cost you $11.30 for a beer, followed by Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates where it would set you back $10.83. You would barely get enough for a sip in those countries for $1. This should not come as a total surprise; the cheapest countries to snag a beer are typically associated with developing economies where other associated goods are also quite cheap, whereas the Nordic nations and UAE are noted for the lavish lifestyles they offer.

I love craft beer. It’s ALMOST my favorite beverage….almost. I must confess that if I only had one rose to give, my true heart belongs to coffee. As a teacher, father of two-under-two, and an all-around soulless zombie in the morning, coffee is basically the lifeblood that keeps me functioning. In fact, as I write this article, I am on cup number three; I know…it’s bad.

To go along with this addiction, I am one of those guys who drowns my coffee in creamer. Oh, I love creamers of all flavors; French Vanilla, hazelnut, Cinnabon, you name it! There is one creamer that rises above all else, though; one creamer that reigns supreme in my refrigerator; and that of course is “Extra Extra” by Dunkin’ Donuts. It strikes the absolute perfect balance of sweetness, heaviness, and flavor – in essence, it takes any cup of coffee from good, hell, even great, to PERFECTION.

Imagine my giddiness, my titillation, my bliss, even, when I discovered that my two great beverage loves were on a collision course for a coffee slash craft beer lover’s perfect pairing! A blessed blending of beverages is coming our way! That’s right; Dunkin’ Donuts is pairing up with select craft breweries to offer limited-released beers!

Craft Brews

Nick Brown, writing for dailycoffeenews.com reports that Dunkin Donuts’ first collaboration with a craft brewery was a partnership Catawba Brewing Company out of North Carolina. Together, they brewed a Brown Ale dubbed Dunkin’ Punkin’ . The beer was concocted with Dunkin’ Donuts cold brew and their proprietary flavors.

“Craft coffee is at the core of our business so we like to brew up something for National Coffee Day that really delights our customers. That’s when we hatched an out-of-the-cup idea – combine craft coffee and craft beer — the perfect pair,” -Meaghan Duff, Dunkin’ Donuts field marketing manager

Now, we’ve gone down this road before, and truthfully, the road has been bumpy. Take for example the often divisive mashups between Voodoo Donuts and Rogue Brewing. For some, those brews are akin to Frankenstein’s monster; a creation better left in the imagination. For some (like us), the collaboration resulted in some creative, adventurous, and pretty tasty beer!

The most recent release in the Dunkin’ Donuts craft beer collaborative series was a partnership with Wormtown Brewery out of Worcester, Massachusetts. DDark Roasted Brew, a stout, features Dunkin’ Donuts dark roast coffee. According to Dunkin’ Donuts and Wormtown, DDark Roasted Brew will offer a “full-roasted coffee flavor reminiscent of freshly-ground beans with a creamy mouthfeel.”

Stay tuned for announcements on future collaborations between Dunkin’ Donuts and other small, local craft breweries! I will tell you this: If Dunkin’ Donuts ever creates a craft beer including their Extra Extra, I will empty my retirement fund to buy as much as humanly possible. Here’s hoping. Cheers!

Last Friday, President Trump signed into law one of the most extensive pieces of tax legislation in over three decades. While the tax plan proposed, and ultimately passed by Republicans has not been without controversy and debate, the craft beer industry is raising its collective glass to the GOP.

Without getting too thick in the weeds on tax law, the basic tenant of the GOP plan is that it slashes the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%. The philosophy is that corporations, infused with potentially billions of dollars in savings, will reinvest that money into the business, new materials, higher wages, and thus the economy will expand and grow.

The reason craft breweries are overflowing with optimism is that the new tax plan eliminates the burdensome “excise tax” on craft breweries. Excise taxes are taxes paid when purchases are made on a specific good, such as gasoline, or in this case, barrels of craft beer. Excise taxes are often included in the price of the product, which is why the price on craft beer varies wildly from state to state and from brewery to brewery. Simply put, the excise tax on craft beer is a major factor in the price you as the consumer pay for it as breweries roll that expense into their pricing models.

The current excise tax burden on craft beer is costly; Currently, breweries must pay $7 per barrel on the first 60,000 barrels for brewers that produce fewer than 2 million barrels a year. Under the new legislation, that rate would be cut to $3.50 per barrel. It also would reduce the federal excise tax from $18 to $16 per barrel on the first 6 million barrels for all other brewers. All said, the new tax relief is estimated to save craft breweries a collective 4.2 Billion dollars.

Craft beer as an industry has long tried to push tax reform in an effort to lower costs, increase profits and embolden the economy. This infographic, courtesy of BeerInstitute, demonstrates the potential outcome of one of their proposed pieces of legislation.

The goal for the Republican tax law is to strengthen America’s economy; and while many economists debate and disagree on whether or not this goal will ever be realized, at least in the craft beer industry, all signs point to strong success.

If you would like further reading and information on the new tax law and its impact on craft beer, please check out CraftBeer.com’s informational posting.

Best Christmas gifts for beer guys

by: Mark Cot (Guest Post)

Are you thinking about what will you give to your friends for Christmas? If you aren’t then it is the right time to start. Christmas is almost a month away which means that the entire holiday season is right at the door. If you are not a fan of crowds in the mall I would definitely suggest you start thinking about presents now. To help you with few ideas, I have made a list of great Christmas presents which are perfect for beer lovers. Look at the list and tell me what do you think?

Keg Refrigerator

The keg is the life of every party, but only if it is ice cold. No one wants to drink warm beer that is not the way to enjoy this perfect beverage. So, to avoid disgusted faces on your guests, one has to keep the keg nice and cold the entire party. The best way to do that is with this refrigerator which is made especially for kegs. A great idea is to get this keg refrigerator for the biggest beer lover among your friends because it is portable and you all can enjoy great ice cold beer. I am pretty sure your friend won’t go anywhere without it. Bonus feature: it is a dispenser as well so you don’t have to move the keg from it.

Corkcicle Chillsner

There are two types of beer lovers. The ones who love draft beer and the ones who love bottled beer. I have shown you how to make the keg nice and cold, but what about bottles? Yes, I have a solution for that too. This little gadget is made to fit almost every beer bottle and it will keep your beer cold for hours, even on the hottest day of summer. All you have to do is put this little tube in your bottle and let there be ice cold beer!

Foosball table

Beer goes with almost every sport or game table, but a bond between foosball and beer is something special. Playing foosball and drinking beer with your friends is the perfect evening! That is something almost every beer guy will tell you. The reason why foosball and beer go together so nicely is the fact that you can play foosball in 4 and if you finish a really intense match, you will need the beer. A match like that that one will wake up the adrenaline and you will be pumped, which is a good thing!

Beer Making Kit

Craft beers are popular these days and this present is for beer lovers who know a lot about beer, but they never thought to make their own. Those friends maybe need a little nudge to enter the beer world as with their own beer and you have the ability to give them that. If nothing, he will definitely have fun making his own beer!

Beer!

What kind of „Best Christmas gifts for beer guys“ list would be if I haven’t mentioned beer? A lousy one. If you know his taste and which beer is his favorite you can buy him that beer or, if you aren’t sure, get him different beers so he can taste and see which one is better. Who knows, you may give him the best beer ever in his eyes!

Author bio:

Mark is a foosball player who has a blog about foosball called the FOOSBALL ZONE. He loves everything related to foosball and he wants people to see how awesome this game table is. Due to that, he is writing posts with guides and tips and everything one has to know before gets a foosball table and enters the foosball world.
