BARK PARK: an ARFabet book

I'm so excited to announce my Kickstarter project. BARK PARK is an ARFabet book of scratchboard illustrations that celebrates the alphabet with a letter-by-letter listing of dog breeds. I hope to communicate the unique inner dog-ness of each dog with my self-generated style of scratchboard. My love of messy ink and precise line work come together in surprising ways on each page. I've created a Kickstarter campaign to help me actualize this dream. You can join the effort by buying a signed copy of the book, an E-Book, archival fine arf prints, and much more.

Seal Walk

Those of you who know me know that I love animals. You can probably imagine my delight when this job from HUE Magazine came my way. Not only did I get to draw animals for the magazine, I also got to go on one of the CRESLI seal walks with Professor Kopelman and saw seals (and lots of very interesting birds) in their natural habitat in the Hamptons. It was an incredible experience. Big thanks go out to Alex and the rest of the HUE team!

This past Saturday, I went to Steamtown Hot Yoga in Scranton, PA and did some live sketching of the amazing folks there. Unsurprisingly, yogis are very good at holding poses, but the poses are so much more intense than anything I have ever sketched before. I tried to keep my sketches quick, around a minute, though I did not have a timer so I really don't know for sure. I did over 15 drawings and had a great time hanging out with everyone at SHY. Big thanks go out to Lara, John, and everyone in the Steamtown community!

Wire Works Gin

After anxiously waiting for product shots, I'm so excited to show you the gin labels I illustrated. I provided two small scratchboard illustrations for the labels of Wire Works Gin, a new gin from GrandTen Distilling in Boston.

The Sex Workers Project

This is an illustration for the cover of a report that came out today from the Sex Workers Project detailing the impact of using condoms as evidence of prostitution in New York City. They have decided to use it as the logo for the campaign -- it is on labels, websites, and made the rounds in Albany yesterday. The SWP is a project at the Urban Justice Center that provides legal services and engages in documentation and policy advocacy for sex workers. They are an amazing organization, and you should support them. I suggest that everyone take a moment out of their day to think about this issue and all of the ramifications. I find it very unsettling that this happens in a city we all perceive to be fairly progressive. It needs to stop. Now.

This illustration is in the upcoming issue of AV Technology Magazine for an article that deals with room acoustics in conference rooms. The magazine also had me lay out the type so it could be integrated with the illo. It was really fun to work text into my illustration. This full-page illustration will be in the April issue of AV Technology magazine. They wanted something that would explain the concept to the reader that was also something more visually interesting than a simple infographic. I made the "cloud" itself by layering reversed ink washes to make it feel more organic and airy. It is always a pleasure to work with AVT -- thanks again, Margot and Nicole!

The iPad: Ready for Pro AV?

This illustration is on the cover of the March issue of Sound & Video Contractor. The issue focuses on using the iPad (and other tablets) to run complex AV systems. Here, an AV schematic comes to life, but its stability is questionable.

I also did a full-page interior illustration for the issue. The article compares and contrasts the iPad and various Android-based tablets to help their readers decide which device would be best for their needs.

DV Expo East

This illustration is for DV Expo East, a digital video show in New York this summer where new devices and gear are exhibited. The art director wanted me to incorporate the NY skyline and the devices to create a 1/3 page illustration that faded at the edges (and allowed the type logo to fit nicely below) and used the colors they had pre-selected for the show. Big thanks to Adrianne for a very fun assignment!

Double Dog Dare

Lacey, one of my dearest forever-friends, commissioned me to scratch these dachshund portraits for her husband Jarod. She sent me reference photos of their pups Charlie and George, and I did my best to capture their personalities. The portraits are ink on clayboard panels with wood cradles, so they can be hung side by side without glass. I love drawing dogs, so I had a blast drawing these guys. Plus, I even got to meet Charlie and George when I was in Oklahoma over the holidays. Thanks, Lacey!

This illustration is inside and outside of the October issue of AV Technology. It started as a full page interior illustration, and then, during the sketch process, they decided they wanted to use it for the cover as well. I had a lot of fun with this piece, and I also liked the way the Art Director incorporated the Wifi balloons into the page layout. Back to the Society

I went to Sketch Night at the Society of Illustrators last night. It was a fun night as always (these are some 2 minute poses) but also a little bittersweet. Matt Black, the best bartender ever, had his last night behind that historic bar last night. I am going to miss him at the Society, but I am glad he'll be slinging drinks in Union Square. Cheers, Matt. You will always be my favorite bartender, and I feel lucky to count you as a friend.

Dog Park

This is a series of dog scratchboards that I exhibited at the FIT Museum to mark the culmination of my MFA in Illustration. I received an MA from FIT in 2007, and went back to grad school for one year as they expanded the program to an MFA. That added "F" marks the terminal degree in Illustration. Thanks to everyone at the museum, my incredible classmates, and the amazing program chair Melanie Reim for a great show.

From my statement:
Dog Park is a visual exploration of the canine companions who fill the negative space in our urban environment. In a place where both private and public space are coveted, many New Yorkers find ways to fit dogs of various sizes into their tiny apartments, jam-packed daily routines, and the densely woven fabric of the city itself. In the midst of tall buildings crammed together tightly, sections of outdoor space are preserved and left empty for dogs to run, play, and engage each other while embracing their intrinsic dog-ness.

On seven kaolin clay panels of various sizes, life-size illustrations of dogs twist, skitter, leap, and crouch, as they individually inhabit a portion of empty space in their own unique way while interacting with each other across the wall. Executed using a self-generated approach to scratchboard, ink is splashed with a brush into black silhouettes on the clay surface. After the ink dries, white lines are carved into these flat, dark shapes to build dimension. The two sides of the process come together to create dogs that move organically in ways that both defy and follow their form, dripping, splattering, and shattering to life.

This portrait of Todd Rundgren ran in the August issue of Guitar World. The article was about Rundgren's new album of Robert Johnson covers. The AD wanted to play with the idea of putting Rundgren in Johnson's shoes at the Crossroads, an idea I instantly loved. I had a great time working on this. Thanks, Alexis!

Black Badger Book Club

This is a project I did for the Black Badger Book Club. They needed an illustration of an angry badger reading that they could incorporate into a logo, and I was thrilled to oblige. I designed the character, and created three versions, one with a book, one listening to an audiobook, and one on an e-reader, while maintaining the same basic character. This was a very fun job -- thanks, Aaron and Marlee!

Anti-Muslim Inner Circle

These 10 scratchboard portraits of the men and women who put gasoline in the fire of the uprising of anti-Muslim sentiment were commissioned by the Southern Poverty Law Center for their magazine Intelligence Report.
