Have you ever noticed that the people talking smack the loudest are usually the biggest cowards in the group? In sports, bar fights, traffic jams or security checkpoint lines at the airport, watch how the biggest blowhards, jumping around, pointing their fingers, frothing at the mouth are usually never really ready to back it up? “Oh, it’s a good thing the bouncer, the umpire, the traffic cop or the TSA agent jumped in to protect you” they claim.

If Terry Jones and his happy crew at the Dove World Outreach Center want to send their anti-Islamic message in a bold and brave way, send it from the streets of Kabul, Kandahar or Mazar-e-Sharif. If you want to cause a stir, go torch it in front of the Taliban. Don’t sit in Gainesville wrapped in your police protection and Constitutional right to free speech, go sing your anthem to Al-Qaeda. If you want a publicity stunt, take it to the people of Pakistan, straight up, face to face. Take your bravado to Baghdad, while you’re at it.

Look, I’m a HUGE fan of our First Amendment right to speak like an idiot if we choose. If Terry Jones wants to exercise that right, he should go hurl his insults in person. If he wants to leave his mark on life, go do it in Mosul. Don’t stand behind our troops, knowing they will ultimately take the beating for you. Stand up, butch up, buy yourself and your congregation tickets to Takrit and then light your match.

I have a new nomination for Lowlifes Making Headlines. Terry Jones and his Gainesville, Florida church.

How will you mark the 9th anniversary of September 11th? Unfortunately, we already know the answer of Florida Pastor Terry Jones. He and members of his congregation plan a public burning of Qurans, the Islamic Holy book. Enter the Commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus. He’s not a fan of the plan, nor am I.

Though they have a right to express themselves, Constitutionally protected 1st Amendment right, what good can come from burning a Quran? If as General Petraeus suggests the Pastor’s actions will only inflame the Taliban, aid them in their recruiting efforts and further “endanger” our troops, why would anyone take such an action? Why place our troops in greater danger just to make a point? Their job isn’t tough enough? We need to give the Taliban yet another reason to step up their attacks against us?

Burning books is never a good idea yet this plan tops the list.

I have an idea. Why not let Pastor Jones and his Dove World Outreach Center take their “outreach” to Kabul or Kandahar? Why not commit his arson on the streets of Afghanistan? Perhaps his boldness, bravery and bravado would be better utilized in country? Instead of Gainesville, take the show on the road to Ghanzi. Why not try his publicity stunt in Bagdad, even sell a few copies of his own book? I’m sure the Taliban would love to return the favor in person.

Mr. Jones. You want a propaganda war? Go put your ass on the front lines, go light your match in Mazar-e-Sharif, and stop making our troops pay for your ignorance and cowardice.

UPDATE: NPR story highlights the White House spin cycle surrounding combat brigades in Iraq.

Just how gullible must we seem? Do you ever wonder just how credulous and dupable the press and our politicians believe us to be? As they serve up the sound-bite-du-jour, do you think maybe they chuckle to themselves, amazed at both their own audacity and just how truly naive we are? Even as they stare us right in the face, handing out one line of BS after another.

Notwithstanding, Olbermann and Maddow, the made-for-NBC-TV withdrawal of US forces from Iraq and the spin of President Obama, we still have 50,000 troops in country. What pull out? Where? How gullible do we appear?

Some great writers and media outlets have called the scam out on the carpet. Huffington Post is running AP’s refusal to cave and report the White House whitewash. Gilbert Mercier over at News Junkie Post is keeping it real as is Glenn Greenwald at Salon, just to name a few.

For the rest of the face plates in the media, what part of 50,000 troops don’t you get?

Walking down the street the other day in Chicago, a middle-aged panhandler sitting on the sidewalk asked me, “Do you have a couple of bucks to spare?” I had zero cash in my pocket and replied, “Sorry man, I don’t have any money on me.” Just as I passed him he asked me, “What, are you a racist?” Though I walked away his words stuck with me.

I’ve thought about his question 100 times since then. I’m a racist because I didn’t have any cash? Really, that’s what it has come to in our country?

Regardless of your race, are you a racist if you disagree with someone of another skin color? That’s all it takes to qualify? Really?

Are you now considered a racist if you’ve gone to a Tea Party event? Should you be deemed a racist if you think Rev. Al Sharpton is irrelevant and will do and say just about anything to get on camera? So you’re a racist if you didn’t vote for President Obama? Are you now a racist if you think Sarah Palin doesn’t stand a chance in a general election? Are you suddenly viewed as a racist if you think Chairman Michael Steele should find another gig? Are you looked at as a racist if think Nullification is a viable political process? Are you a racist if you dislike Glenn Beck or Nancy Pelosi? Are you a racist if you think the N.A.A.C.P. has bigger issues, real issues to address than to launch a website to hunt down alleged “racists” in rival political parties? One would think we would have learned hunting witches and communists. Are you a racist to think that if Maxine Waters, Charlie Rangel or Rod Blagoivich are found guilty, they should be dealt with accordingly?

None of this is to suggest that racism doesn’t exist; as despicable and disgusting as it is, sad to say it has survived into the 21st Century. Unfortunately, that’s undebatable today.

Have you noticed of late that some now hurl the accusation of racism way too flippantly, political “Chicken Littles” shooting from the hip, building fences instead of bridges, turmoil instead of trust, playing the race card as a matter of strategy or political expediency? What happens to these lowlife activists when more and more Americans begin to ignore their unsubstantiated claims? What happens in those cases when the accusation is accurate and action therefore warranted yet the term is all but warn out through repetition and therefore ignored? What then?

The next time someone labels another a racist, take a moment and wonder about the accuser and their motives. Are the the accusers of racism “rooting it out”or are they “rooting it on” in hopes of justifying some ulterior intention or to unfairly sabotage their opponent? Ask yourself, just what are they up to?

Incorrectly demonizing the oposition with the charge of racism is the definition of degenerate. To falsely accuse another of racism, hoping to impugn or marginalize them with your attack, only stokes the fires that you so publicly pretend to quell. Look, if you can prove the charge of racism, please do so. If you can’t support your claim with evidence, why not slither back under the rock you crawled from?

With all the negative press about some RV’s in the media of late, I thought I’d share a bit of why nomadism, even today, is so vital to our soul. Boondocking is in our blood. Like the want of two full lungs of untamed air, a nose brimming with the smell of fresh wilderness, ears tuned to birdsongs or to the refreshing sounds of nothing at all, eyes gently focused somewhere between you and the distant horizon, time alone in the wild reminds us of who we are. Heading “out there” brings us back to our inner core.

And location doesn’t matter, because boondocking isn’t just about geography or terrain; rather, it’s about temperament — your temperament. “Where is my wild?” My friend Bob Difley asks a great question. “Can you see the Milky Way from your campsite?” That’s as good a test as any.

Relying on yourself, going it alone is the one aspect that calls more RVers to adventure than any other benefit of boondocking. That sense of liberty and independence, of facing the unknown autonomously is a birthright that boondockers gladly embrace, while surrendering the status quo of calendar and clock.

For me, my Off the Grid Office is they way go.

Hindsight is 20/20. Whenever we look back over recent events, as long as we do so with discriminating eyes and minds, we see things a bit clearer. If we’re smart, we embrace our newfound lessons and actively apply them moving forward. To paraphrase philosopher George Santayana, only a crazy person redoubles their effort without checking their aim.

There is a fascinating article on Salon.com this morning by Michael Lind. The tag line reads, “The following excerpt is from the virtual book Republic to Principate: The Decline and Fall of Representative Democracy in America, published in the year 2052 A.D.” By far, one of the most eye-opening articles I’ve read in some time, it highlights how our Constitution could be hijacked, our government redefined before our eyes because of our apathy and misunderstanding of current events.

Here is the best read of the tea leaves, the most accurate –I believe–representation of what will happen to our country should we leave the House of Reprehensibles to grow out of touch, and out of reach, of the electorate that hired them.

To quote Mr. Lind, “Can we reform Congress in time to save democracy?”

Can we save a dying democracy? Our only shot begins by imagining the future if we fail to see our current situation.

There are those cherished exercises we should never forfeit. Our liberty, our freedoms, our right to vote. And though coupled with our inalienable rights comes our equally inalienable responsibilities, it seems the one thing we surrender without much thought is our individual commitment to those around us, our duty to do unto others.

When did we decided to task our government with the role that should have always remained our own? Charity, decency and morality are intimate responsibilities, yet sadly many now turn to legislation to achieve these “collective” goals. We took our charges of private behavior, ethical responsibility and personal compassion and asked our politicians to assume control. Wrapped in the shroud of paternalism, the government became both our moral compass and the enforcer of our moral codes. One need only think of congressional episodes like the recent “slap and tickle” to find this train of thought as ridiculous as it is offensive.

On a recent episode of Freedom Watch, Judge Napolitano used the words “social pressure, not jail” as a cure to big government involvement in what should be personal endeavors. It made me wonder if social pressure, not socialism, balances and holds each of us accountable for our own karma?

If the respect you show another is based on regulation, if your sense of morality comes from a majority rule, keep it. It’s as fake as you are; kind of like plastic fruit.

The good we do, we do because we can, not because we should. We do what we do out of compassion, not out of compliance or coercion.

Why not be a good friend, be a good parent, be a good neighbor, be a good citizen, be a good leader and be aware of any government, from Condo Boards to City Hall to Capitol Hill that regulates–by statute–those actions that should be of individual responsibility?

Forget Sarah Palin’s “mama grizzly” bears, if you live in the Reno, Nevada area you don’t need me to tell you that wild, black bears are on the rampage. Hundreds of instances have been reported to local authorities where these crafty creatures, some weighing up to 6 or 7 hundred pounds are breaking down the door and helping themselves to the refrigerator. Seems that these outgoing omnivores have learned that the kitchen has more calories, and more taste I suspect, than road-kill and berry patches. According to wildlife officials, it takes only 1 successful attempt to crack into your cupboards, just one shot at foraging in your food pantry and the bears never forget it. Not unlike the lines from the movie Splash when the late John Candy offered, “Hey, when I find something that works I stick with it.”

Interestingly, the moment the burglarizing bears learn a better way at securing the food they need to survive, they abandon their innate, natural habits, ingrained since the beginning of their species, for a more efficient way of getting things done. If it ain’t working, it ain’t working, so time to move on, the hell with the status quo…NO doing it just for doing it sake.

How cool would it be if voters could learn that quickly on their feet?

Each election cycle, we jump on a political see-saw, tipping it to either the Democrats or the Republicans, like it really, truly matters. We get all worked up about one party or another, one candidate or another yet in the end we elect a politician. They promise change and all we get is short-changed. They swear an allegiance to our Constitution and as soon as their right hand falls they set out to circumvent it. Soon they are voting more for their pockets than for their people.

New party in power, identical power grabs. Same old, same old.

At least bears are smart enough to adapt, to think on their paws, to change what isn’t working into a system that works for them.

Did you ever wonder just how many Federal, State, County, City, Village and Association rules, ordinances, regulations, statutes, executive orders and edicts are on the official books? Just how many laws and court orders are we subject to, living here in the land of the free? The best guess is somewhere over 2 million. 2 million laws; that’s a pretty big book. Throw in the progressively mounting taxes at all levels of government, and we are up against a huge up hill.

I have said, on many occasions, that the ever increasing number of laws and official, enforceable policies are designed not only to legislate us into submission, but to keep those in power employed. If your list of laws grows that quickly, you gotta ask yourself “what comes first, the law or a politician? If we had fewer laws, would we need an ever increasing bureaucracy to enact, impose and enforce them?

Do you ever get the feeling the political class and the war-chests that support and fund them, are simply waiting for us to tap out? Just like a fighter in a mixed martial arts match that can’t take it anymore when he slaps his hand to the mat? Really, it’s beginning to look like a MMA version of a Constitutional cage fight. Through exhaustion, apathy or downright submission maybe, they hope, we will figure it’s just too much to fight city hall and surrender, waving the white flag and packing it in.

When it comes to regulators and politicians, you give them an inch and they take a 2X4 to you!

Tapping out?

It’s up to you.
