Blick Art Materials: Commitment to Excellence

Commitment and determination are important factors in the development of an artist’s career. In order to reach a goal, you have to decide that you’re going to accomplish it at some point in the future and then do what it takes to achieve the end result. This final outcome isn’t always arrived at by setting your sights directly on the target goal, but requires more effort in order to hit the mark. Think of it this way: You’re an archer who is standing at one end of a football field with a bow and arrow. The circular target is at the opposite end of the field. Your goal is to place that arrow in the bull’s eye of the target. In order to do this, you can’t simply aim in a straight line directly at the target on the opposite end of the field and then pull back the bow and release the arrow, expecting to hit the bull’s eye. If you do, the arrow won’t have enough force behind it to carry it all the way to the other end of the field. So, what’s the solution? In order to reach the goal, you have to aim higher. By doing so, the arrow will soar farther, ultimately reaching the intended target.

Blick Art Materials has been setting their sights higher since 1911 in order to reach their goal of providing the best customer service in the industry. Not only do they stock over 60,000 products in their warehouse to provide the best selection and availability, but they also staff full-time product information specialists who are “art material experts” that can answer any questions that you have. Better yet, Blick Art Materials has real people answering the phones 24 hours a day, seven days a week!

Blick offers a wide variety of art supplies in order to meet each artist’s unique needs.
Artist Dean Mitchell

Never underestimate the important role that a background plays in a work of art and the weight of influence that it carries with it. Some of the greatest backgrounds in a painting are those that go largely unnoticed, not because of their insignificance, but because they were painted with such sensitivity and character as to seamlessly allow for the focus and attention to be placed elsewhere, ultimately revealing the entire story to be told. Backgrounds like these often come as a result of struggle and persistence by the artist until the desired effect has been achieved. It’s the foundation which provides depth and perspective. In many ways, the background is the unsung hero, often overlooked, but so vital to the success or failure of a work of art.

Artist Dean Mitchell is a master at finding the beauty and dignity of everyday life. The feelings and emotions that he captures in each of his watercolors come as a result of understanding the people and places that he paints.

Photo of Dean Mitchell in his studio

Here’s a video which helps to paint a background of the life and work of Dean Mitchell:

Dean has a gift for painting ordinary subjects in an extraordinary way.
Silver Brush Limited Artist Paintbrushes

Having the right equipment to use when painting can mean the difference between getting the results that you’re after or spending the day frustrated, especially when it comes to brushes. There’s nothing like using a brand new, chiseled brush that holds its shape and provides just the right amount of spring and flexibility that are needed when painting. When having access to these vital tools is not possible, artists can often become quite creative and improvise if needed. Working with worn or inferior brushes is one thing, but what do you do when you don’t have any paint brushes to work with? The great painter, Sir Alfred Munnings, found himself in that very predicament and wrote about it in his book, An Artist’s Life. Here’s a paragraph describing the scene:

“Once on Exmoor, not long ago, I arrived by car at Cloud Farm to paint Bagsworthy Water, some twelve miles away, and found I had forgotten my brushes. I have developed the habit of carrying my brushes separately in a brown-paper roll. A box holds a miserable handful, and I like at least one big brush among the twenty or thirty I choose to take. With no brushes, I viciously chewed the ends of pieces of wood, tied paint-rags on sticks, sought out minute fir-cones washed down in spate to the stream’s bank, some of these matted with fine strands of grass. A teazle was a grand thing on such an occasion. Cursing and raging – not to be beaten, I found that with these tools I could do a lot, and the final result was much the same as if I had used brushes. I returned next day. Conditions were the same. I sat in the same place near the roaring foam. I made the same design and painted another picture; this time with brushes. Afterwards, placing the two canvases side by side, and standing back to look, they appeared exactly the same, four yards away.”

Painting by Sir Alfred Munnings

Munnings was a master painter and I don’t doubt that the two results looked similar when viewed from a distance, but I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be as fortunate in getting the results that I was after in portrait painting if I were required to use the same improvised equipment. In order to have full control of each stroke that goes onto the canvas, I need a brush that can retain its shape while holding a good amount of paint. It must also have just the right amount of flexibility when pressed against the canvas and be able to stand up to rigorous painting sessions.

Silver Brush Limited has been making the perfect brushes for artists of all mediums for twenty-two years. Each brush is perfectly balanced and shaped to fit the hand, using only the best quality materials and highest standards of craftsmanship.

From natural bristles to synthetics, Silver Brush offers an unsurpassed selection of brushes in a vast choice of shapes, sizes and hair blends that are ideal for every painting media and artists of all skill levels. I’ve been using Silver Brush products for years and have been extremely pleased with the consistent quality of the brushes and the results that they produce. I especially like using the Grand Prix Filberts and Flats when blocking in or working on large areas of a painting.

Grand Prix Premium White Bristle Brushes

When a more finished and refined look is required on a portrait, I prefer to use the Ruby Satin Flats and Filberts. These synthetic brushes are extremely durable and have the feel and control of interlocked bristle. These are among some of my favorite brushes that I use on a daily basis.

Ruby Satin Synthetic Brushes

Here’s an example of using a Ruby Satin brush during a head study demonstration while filming Painting Outdoor Light

Silver Brush Limited and top professional artists have teamed up to put together a variety of brush sets which include some of the favorite Silver Brushes that they use in their own studio.
Artist Joe Bowler: The Art of Encouragement

When talking with other artists, the conversation often leads to two topics that mean a great deal to me: inspiration and encouragement. These two subjects are vital ingredients in the life and career of an artist. In my own experience, I’ve found that a little bit of encouragement can go a long way towards helping others reach their goals. I think back to my days as an art student in college, getting set to graduate and embark on an exciting career in art. What I soon discovered was that not everyone was as excited about this adventure as I was. In fact, there were many people who tried to discourage me from pursuing my goals, stating that I could never make it as an artist. After a while, I began to doubt whether or not I should continue my studies and was preparing to make a decision on whether or not I should give up on my dream of becoming an artist. The move proved to be the ideal location for making the transition from illustration to portraiture. Since that time, clients from all over world have come to Joe’s studio to have their portrait painted by one of today’s modern masters.

Photo of Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island

Spanish moss adorns the Live Oaks that line the picturesque roads to Hilton Head

Here are some examples of Joe Bowler’s incredible portrait paintings:

In addition to hosting clients at his home over the years, Joe has also welcomed countless artists into his studio. This is where I fit into the picture. I first met Joe and his wife, Marilyn, back in 1993. As I was traveling to his home, I had made up my mind that this visit would determine whether or not I should continue to pursue a career in art. That afternoon, Joe graciously took a look at some of my work and offered his advice on what I could do to improve. He gave me an entire art history of some of the great painters of the past and how their work had inspired him throughout his career. Not wanting to overstay my welcome, I thanked Joe and Marilyn for taking time out of their busy schedules to see me and was getting set to pack up my paintings in the car. Before leaving, Marilyn asked if I would like to join her and Joe for dinner. Later that night, as we sat at a crowded restaurant talking about some of the great artists of the past, Joe said something to me that I’ve never forgotten over the years. While leaning forward, putting one arm up on the table and looking me straight in the eye, he said “When you look at artists like Sargent, Zorn, Sorolla, or even my own work, don’t determine that you’re going to paint like them.” At that moment I could feel my heart drop, recalling the voices of those who had told me that I could never make it as an artist. I began bracing for the worst, thinking that Joe was about to tell me that I just didn’t have what it takes to become a successful artist. Instead, he finished by saying “Determine that you’re going to paint better and, someday, you might surprise yourself”. That one sentence changed my whole outlook on art and helped to solidify my answer of whether or not I should continue to pursue a career in art. Since that time, Joe has been a constant source of encouragement and inspiration to me throughout the years.

Me and Joe in his studio on Hilton Head Island

In his 3 disc DVD series, Joe continues to encourage a new generation of artists by sharing the knowledge and experience that he’s gained over the years during his career as both a famed illustrator and renowned portrait painter. Joe discusses the topics of technique, the life of an artist, and also his own philosophy on art. Also included is one of the best lessons that I’ve ever seen on the topic of mixing flesh tones by using warm and cool colors and how to combine them to create various “grays”.
Yale University Press and John Singer Sargent

Whenever I’m asked to name some of my favorite artists, John Singer Sargent is always at the top of the list. His work has all of the qualities that make for a great work of art. Whether you’re talking about drawing ability and draftsmanship, complete control of value relationships, creative composition, capturing an arrested pose in a sitter, using warm and cool temperature changes in color, portrait painting, landscape painting, working in oil, charcoal or watercolor, Sargent could do it all. Not only was he able to accomplish all of this throughout his career, but he became one of the very best in history to ever do so. In many ways, Sargent’s work acts as a bridge between academic painting and Impressionism. Although often known for his incredible portrait paintings, Sargent was equally adept at painting landscapes en plein air. In constant search of fresh approaches to landscape and figure painting, Sargent’s travel destinations included the Alps, Italy, Spain, Norway and Palestine.

John Singer Sargent painting outdoors

Yale University Press has captured 283 of these magnificent landscape paintings in their recently published book, John Singer Sargent: Figures and Landscapes, 1900-1907.

When it comes to books on John Singer Sargent, no one does it better than Yale University Press. These large format books are packed with crystal clear images that are arranged in chronological order, providing a great resource to study from. John Singer Sargent: Figures and Landscapes, 1900-1907 is the latest installment in Yale’s catalogue raisonne project of Sargent’s work and is a stunning addition to the series. Throughout the book, Yale has also included photographs of many of the same locations that Sargent painted. One of the unique features that sets this volume apart from the others is that the photos are taken from the same view and perspective as the artist, giving us greater insight into what Sargent saw as he was painting.

If you’re looking for the best books available on the work of John Singer Sargent, I would highly recommend taking a look at Yale University Press’ catalogue raisonne project of his work.
A couple of years ago I wrote a blog titled “In One Sitting” in which I talked about a direct approach to painting referred to as Alla Prima. At the end of that entry I shared my experience of talking with a group of young artists who were preparing to take the skills that they had learned in art school and begin their careers. Here are a few excerpts from the last paragraph of that blog posting:

“Unlike art, where you can go back, make changes, correct mistakes and, in some cases, even start over again, life is lived Alla Prima- in one sitting. Every decision you make is like another brush stroke on the canvas of time. With each new day comes a clean slate- a blank canvas. Strive to make each new day better than the last, for with it comes the opportunity to create a masterpiece.”

Artist Richard Schmid has been painting masterpieces on a daily basis over the years, not only on canvas, but in the lives of those around him. As one of the most well-known and respected artists of our time, Richard’s work represents the finest examples of excellence and beauty in representational art. What sets his paintings apart from others is not the subjects that he paints, but how he chooses to see and interpret the beauty that is found in the world around him.

Each time I see one of Richard Schmid’s paintings, I’m reminded of the time when I first met him back in 1993. I wrote about this experience on my blog last year, but was reminded of it again when I recently came across a photo that was posted by Ryan Mellody. After looking at the image of Richard giving a painting demonstration during a Weekend with the Masters event, I was quickly taken back twenty years to June of 1993 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The similarity between the two photos was a great example of the persistence and perseverance that Richard Schmid has displayed over the years. Although times have changed, Richard’s steadfast and immovable focus on excellence has not wavered.

Richard giving a demonstration in 1993.

Richard painting at the Weekend with the Masters event in 2010

Having had over fifty one-man shows and being featured in countless museums, galleries, books, magazines and videos throughout his distinguished career, Richard Schmid has inspired an entire generation of artists. Although his impact on the art world is immeasurable, his greatest gift is the art of giving. This is clearly seen by his willingness to share his knowledge and expertise with other artists so that they, too, can experience the thrill of reaching their own personal goals.

Here’s a photo of Richard’s note of encouragement to me back in 1993
during the opening of his one-man show. It reads “To Brian with good
wishes and much joy in your painting”. Click here to read my experience
in witnessing Richard’s generosity firsthand.

Richard continues to graciously share his wealth of knowledge and experience with others through his books and instructional art videos. His bestselling book, Alla Prima, is considered one of the most comprehensive art instruction books on the market and is a standard in classical art education in the United States and abroad. The book contains 193 pages of information to help you grow as an artist and includes many full page, color images of Richard Schmid’s work that are sure to inspire your creativity.

Here are some examples of what’s inside the book:

The Landscapes is a stunning 280 page large format book that includes over 300 images of Richard Schmid’s landscape paintings, the largest collection ever compiled in one publication.
Fechin Art Reproductions

Learning is a lifelong process and the education that can be gained along the way is limitless for those who are willing to put in the time and effort that is needed to reach their goals. Having access to great art resources is vital to an artist’s education. There’s nothing like standing in front of an original, full sized painting and viewing every brush stroke, color and value exactly as the artist had intended for it to be seen. This firsthand look not only produces a rush of artistic adrenaline, but is also extremely beneficial when studying the work of a particular artist. In order to do this, it often requires having access to art museums, galleries or private collections. Since this isn’t always possible, I’ve found that owning great art books which contain excellent reproductions of the work of some of my favorite artists is the next best thing to seeing an original. I first began collecting books as an art student in college and count them among some of the best investments that I’ve made over the years when it comes to my art education. I’m constantly on the lookout for new publications that contain clear, full color images to study from.

One of the best art books that I’ve come across in recent years is Nicolai Fechin: The Art and the Life by Fechin Art Reproductions. This book contains some of the most outstanding reproductions of Nicolai Fechin’s work available, many of which I had never seen before.

This 462 page hardcover book contains 427 color plates to study from! Most of these color plates are large, full page images that allow you to get a closer look at each painting. I’ve written about this publication here on my blog a few months ago, but wanted to give you a glimpse inside the book so that you, too, can see the superior quality for yourself. Here’s a short video that I’ve put together about Nicolai Fechin: The Art and the Life:

If you’re in the market for a tremendous resource on the work of Nicolai Fechin, I would highly recommend taking a look at Nicolai Fechin: The Art and the Life. Not only is this book the most comprehensive resource available when it comes to Fechin’s work, but it’s also one of the very few that is written in English.

Fechin Art Reproductions has built a strong reputation for producing high quality books and reproductions over the years and is a source of historical expertise on both the life and work of Nicolai Fechin. In addition to publishing several books and reproductions, Fechin Art Reproductions also hosts a variety of art workshops during the year. These workshops provide students with an exclusive opportunity for the exchange of ideas and experience from outstanding instructors. Each all-inclusive workshop is limited to twenty students and takes place in an intimate environment which maximizes personal artistic growth.

Located in the Taos Ski Valley, the elegant European Hotel St. Bernard is available exclusively to participants in the workshop program. Professional chefs and staff provide savory meals, valet service and other amenities that are sure to make your workshop experience an unforgettable memory that will last a lifetime.

Fechin workshops are held in the beautiful Taos Ski Valley.

Interior of the Hotel St. Bernard

I’m honored to have Fechin Art Reproductions as one of the sponsors of the “You be the Judge” art contest 2013.
Artist Quang Ho: The Art of Interpretation

Learning how to see is one of the most challenging hurdles that an artist faces when it comes to the subject of painting. It’s not just a matter of looking at something in front of you, but choosing how you will paint that subject. This selective process takes place in the mind’s eye and acts as a filter between the raw facts that are presented before you in nature and the brush strokes that you place on your canvas. It’s what I would refer to as artistic interpretation. Each artist sees the world around them through their own unique set of eyes, circumstances and, ultimately, interpretation.

Artist Quang Ho is a master at the art of interpretation. Each of his paintings conveys a sense of mood and energy which helps to create a visual dialogue between the viewer and the work of art. A constant conversation of various edges, subtle color and well designed composition holds the viewer’s attention, allowing time for a greater appreciation of his subject’s character and personality.

Here are a few examples of some of Quang’s beautiful paintings:

In order to be an effective interpreter, you first have to understand the language that you are translating. For artists, this means learning the essential visual vocabulary that’s needed in order to communicate. Once these principles are understood, the artist is then equipped with the necessary
vocabulary needed to interpret his subjects in a visual language that can be understood by the viewer.

In his instructional art video, Nuts & Bolts, Quang Ho shares his knowledge and experience with other artists so that they, too, can learn how to understand and grasp the tools that are needed to be an effective communicator. With an emphasis on learning how to see as an artist, Quang shares his
thoughts on drawing, understanding values, light and shadow, as well as the tools and materials that he uses. The video contains valuable information that can only be acquired through a lifetime of experience and experimentation. Quang is extremely generous in sharing everything that he’s learned over the years with other artists so that they, too, can gain a greater insight into how to paint and also avoid some of the mistakes and pitfalls that he experienced early on in his career.

Quang has also produced two additional instructional art videos that demonstrate his approach to painting both a still life and a figure from start to finish.

In Painting the Still Life in Light and Shadow, he shares his thought process from the very initial stages of setting up and lighting the subject to systematically breaking down the painting process from the block-in to the finishing stages. Viewers have the opportunity to see how he approaches the subject of composition and his philosophical ideas and reasoning behind building a beautiful structure.

In Painting the Figure in an Interior, Quang tackles the challenges of painting a figure within the context of a larger environment. An emphasis on “local tone” is taught as the foundation for building structure rather than the use of strong light and shadow. Quang explains every stage during the painting process, allowing the viewer to grasp and understand the concepts that are being taught.

Quang Ho is an extremely gifted teacher and master painter. If you’re looking for a valuable art resource to add to your media library, I would highly recommend taking a look at Quang’s instructional art series. I’ve greatly admired his work over the years and am always inspired whenever I see one of his paintings. I especially like his recent series of restaurant paintings which convey a great sense of activity and movement. Here are a few examples of some of my favorites from the series:

I’m honored to have Quang Ho as one of the sponsors of the “You be the Judge” art contest 2013.
Fine Art Connoisseur

One of the most important facets of an artist’s career involves getting your work seen in front of a target audience. Strategic marketing could mean the difference between selling your latest masterpiece or having it hang on your studio wall for years to come. No matter how talented an artist may be, if their work is never seen outside of the studio then no one will ever have the opportunity to know about it. If one of your goals in creating art is to sell it to others so that they, too, can have the opportunity to enjoy it (and afford you the opportunity to earn a living), then it’s important to know who your audience is and finding ways to reach that target market. This may sound obvious at first, but carrying out this task isn’t always as easy as it seems. As artists, we would much rather be concentrating on mixing colors and comparing values each day rather than spending time trying to find prospective clients who might be interested in buying our work. Effective marketing takes a lot of effort and time, so it’s important to decide which avenues would best help you in reaching your goals so that your time spent out of the studio has as much impact as your time spent at the easel. Whether you choose to market through advertisements, brokers, galleries, social media or word of mouth, it’s important to recognize which outlets are reaching your specific audience so that you, too, can effectively leverage that success when choosing how and who you want to market your work to.

For years, Fine Art Connoisseur magazine has been reaching a specific audience of art collectors and enthusiasts who are passionate about high-quality artwork, while giving them the tools necessary to make better purchasing decisions.
Artist Scott Christensen

An artist’s work is not only a record of a particular subject, but also an extension of the artist, himself. Every brush stroke that goes on to the canvas is part of a series of decisive thoughts by the artist. When successfully combined together, these brush strokes form a complete, visual idea which is readily translated and understood by others. In many ways, a work of art can reveal a great deal about the artist who created it. If an artist is inspired by the subject that he or she is painting, drawing, sculpting, etc., it will show in their work, often inspiring others who view it. Whether it’s collecting great art books, meeting regularly with other artists, attending workshops or visiting art museums, find what inspires you most when it comes to art and then make a conscious effort to immerse yourself in that environment which is most likely to help motivate you to reach your goals.

Artist Scott Christensen surrounds himself on a daily basis in one of the most inspiring environments of all – the great outdoors. Nature plays a key role in Scott’s life, whether he’s out fly fishing or painting on location. As an avid sportsman and former football player, he’s always enjoyed the experience of being outside and now has the opportunity to incorporate that passion into his everyday art career.

The process and effort that it takes to paint a study from life is just as exciting to Scott Christensen as arriving at the final result on canvas. The ever changing lighting situations that occur outdoors, along with the subtle shifts in value and color temperature, all contribute to the everyday inspiration that he finds in each of his subjects. Here are a few examples of some of Scott’s incredible landscape paintings:

When working outdoors, Scott will often paint several small studies that can later be used as reference when painting larger works. From these, he may combine different elements from several studies in order to come up with a composition that works well on a larger scale. These larger works are painted back in Scott’s studio, a haven of inspiration which fosters creativity.

Scott working on a larger piece back in his studio.

The studio serves as both a gallery for Scott’s paintings as well as a workspace.

Several small field studies that were painted on location are displayed on one of the studio walls.

In addition to being a master painter, Scott is also a natural born teacher, conducting workshops throughout the year. Students come from all over the world to learn from his years of knowledge and experience which he so generously shares. One of the topics that Scott emphasizes during these workshop sessions is the importance of painting numerous studies from life which can later be combined and used as reference material for larger works. Here’s a great example of how Scott uses a field study as reference when working on a larger painting:

The initial field study is placed next to the larger work to use as a reference guide.

Scott has also produced a couple of instructional art videos that I highly recommend to other artists. Both of these videos are professionally filmed and packed with valuable information about working en plein air, incorporating variety into your landscapes similar to what is found in nature and using a limited palette to help create harmony and keep your paintings keyed high in value. One of the most fascinating topics that I enjoyed hearing Scott talk about was orchestration: getting all parts of the painting to work together. This is one of the most difficult aspects of painting and it was refreshing to hear Scott give his thoughts about this subject.

In his video, Three Landscape Studies, Scott demonstrates how to paint three different types of lighting situations and shares his knowledge of working quickly outdoors in order to capture the essential information in each of your subjects. In one of the demonstrations he shows the process of combining elements from two different field studies. Beautiful close up views of the paintings in progress are included throughout the video along with clear shots of Scott’s palette, demonstrating how he mixes color when using a limited palette.

The second video, Painting Large Landscapes, demonstrates how Scott uses a smaller study that was painted on location from life as a guide for painting a larger piece back in the studio. He does an excellent job of explaining some of the differences that he encounters when working on a larger scale and talks about the subject of sacrificing certain elements in a painting in order to make it work as a whole. The topic of refining a painting is also addressed and Scott demonstrates the re-working process that he goes through in order to arrive at the finished product. Both of these videos contain a wealth of information for artists of all skill levels.I’ve greatly admired Scott’s work over the years, particularly his ability to simplify and control complex value relationships as well as the confidence that he conveys with each brush stroke.

I’m honored to have Scott Christensen as one of the sponsors of the “You be the Judge” art contest 2013. Both of his instructional art DVDs (Three Landscape Studies and Painting Large Landscapes) are part of the Grand Prize package that will be awarded to the Grand Prize winner in just a few weeks!

The southwestern United States is one of the most unique and visually inspiring places to visit. From its rich heritage to its awe inspiring landscape, the American southwest provides an endless supply of artistic beauty to all who visit. Artists like Edgar Payne and Nicolai Fechin are among those who have not only been captivated by the people and places of this region, but have strived to capture them on canvas. As a result, these breathtaking paintings continue to inspire a new generation of artists to venture west with the hopes of experiencing and recording the beauty that once motivated great painters of the past.

Painting by Edgar Payne

With nearly forty years of experience, Southwest Art is the leading magazine devoted to bringing American Western art to readers each month. Along with stunning images of drawings, paintings and sculpture from some of today’s leading artists, Southwest Art also puts readers in touch with the galleries and collectors who shape the market.

Each new issue features a wide range of artwork that appeals to both the art lover and the experienced collector alike. The magazine also focuses on discovering emerging artists and gives you a glimpse inside some of the studios of today’s most well known artists.

Here are some photos of artists Scott Burdick and Susan Lyon that were included in the Artists' Studios section at www.SouthwestArt.com:

Scott Burdick

Susan Lyon

I always enjoy reading the profiles and interviews with top contemporary Southwestern artists that are included in each issue. Learning more about a particular artist not only gives me greater insight into their working methods, but I often gain a greater appreciation of both them and their work as a result. You can also meet a wide range of artists and learn about their lives, art techniques and more in the Art Videos section of Southwest Art's website.

Learn more about a wide range of artists in the Art Videos section at www.SouthwestArt.com.

Southwest Art is available in both print and digital format.
Artist Morgan Weistling

When it comes to the subject of art, there are no secrets. All of the information that is needed to learn how to paint can be found in museums, books, videos, workshops, the internet and by exchanging information with other artists, just to name a few. There has never been a more opportune time in history for an artist than right now. Not only do we have the advantage of learning from the discoveries and results of past masters, but we also have the technology available to instantly share our work with a worldwide audience.

I’ve always liked the idea of sharing when it comes to art, whether it’s posting a great painting by some of my favorite artists or recommending a great art book that may help to inspire someone in their own career. I’m always on the lookout for those artists who are willing to share what they’ve learned over the years because I know, firsthand, the tremendous impact it can have on someone’s life. If it wasn’t for those who took the time to share their knowledge and experience with me over the years, I wouldn’t be painting commissioned portraits or writing this blog today. It takes a unique and rare individual who is willing to share their story in such a convincing way that it inspires others to begin writing a new chapter in their own life’s story.

Artist, Morgan Weistling, is a master at telling great stories, one canvas at a time. Some of the greatest storytellers have a way of not only grabbing an audience’s attention, but also the ability to keep their interest level high until the very end. How a story is delivered is often times as important as the story, itself. Just as an author carefully chooses his words wisely in order to have the greatest impact on his readers, Morgan Weistling applies each brush stroke as another visual word or sentence in each of the stories that he tells.

Once a highly sought after illustrator for Hollywood’s film industry, Morgan’s work continues to be in great demand by collectors around the world, with each new work in a show often being sold on or before opening night. Whatever the narrative, Morgan Weistling has a gift for conveying emotion in each of his subjects. He has a way of drawing the viewer into the story and making them feel as if they, too, are taking part in a visual tale that begins to unfold right before their eyes.

Not only is Morgan a fantastic artist, but he’s also a great teacher. In his instructional video, Advanced Fundamentals for the Beginning Expert, Morgan generously demonstrates each step of the painting process, all the way from setting up the model and stretching the canvas to applying the final touches. He walks you through the thinking process of painting and explains the reasoning behind what he’s doing as he goes along during this demonstration which was filmed during the course of six days in his studio. Not only do you get to see some incredible close ups, but you also get a view of how he is mixing each color on his palette. It feels as though you are sitting right next to him in his studio and watching how he works. In addition to the demonstration, Morgan has also included what he calls “Side Trips” as well. These are short talks that cover specific topics such as Values, Shapes, Color, Color Sketches and even a short portrait demonstration. The video is packed with solid information for artists of every skill level.

Morgan has also produced another video titled Painting for the Impatient which focuses on two different approaches to painting a head study. Each one is completed in about three hours, similar to the time constraints that you would find in a workshop setting. There’s also footage of Morgan giving a hands on critique and demonstration session with other artists which takes place during an actual workshop setting. The beautiful quality of the close ups of both of the paintings and the palette during these demonstrations, along with the solid information that Morgan delivers, makes this a fantastic video that’s sure to inspire any artist.

As one of the sponsors of the “You be the Judge” art contest 2013, Morgan Weistling has donated a set of each of his instructional art videos. Both Advanced Fundamentals for the Beginning Expert and Painting for the Impatient are included in the Grand Prize package which will be awarded in just a few weeks! Both of these videos are ones that I highly recommend to other artists and I’m so honored to have Morgan be a part of this year’s contest.
Inspiration on The Go: Artists on Art Magazine

Having access to information that will not only help to educate, but also inspire, goes a long way in helping you reach your goals as an artist. I’ve found this to be the case for me over the years for a couple of different reasons. First of all, it not only broadens my scope of knowledge, but also motivates me to incorporate new approaches and techniques into my own working methods by seeing the successful results of other accomplished artists. There are several different ways of reaching a similar result and artists tend to gravitate towards an approach that they feel most comfortable with. Some of the greatest art lessons that I’ve learned over the years have come as a result of working outside of my comfort zone and being open to suggestions and constructive criticism from other artists.

Artists on Art magazine is one of those rare publications that challenges me to look at art from a variety of different angles, often motivating me to explore new techniques that can be applied to my own commissioned portraits. One of the unique features about Artists on Art is that each article is written by an artist or an expert in a particular field of art and is intended to resonate with a specific target audience- you, the artist. I’ve been extremely impressed with this online, digital publication over the past year and always look forward to seeing the next issue. Whether you’re at home, in the studio or out on location, you can access both current and past issues wherever you go.

Some of the features that I find extremely useful about Artists on Art are the high resolution photos that are available in each issue and the videos that are incorporated throughout. The photos give me the opportunity to zoom in on a particular painting, much like being at a museum and getting a closer look at a work of art. The videos provide an opportunity to watch another artist at work and to learn more about their working methods and techniques.

High resolution photos allow you to get a closer look. Here's a detail of a painting by Richard Schmid.

Another favorite feature of mine is the option to subscribe to both the online and PDF version for just a few dollars more. This allows me to download a PDF file of the current issue and save it for later if I don’t have a chance to read all of the articles right away. This is also a great help when I know that I may not have internet access during a set period of time.

There’s also a community section on their website which encourages artists and collectors to submit articles for consideration which are available for free to the public. It’s a great way of helping to educate others and provides a wonderful opportunity for an artist to have their work seen.

Here’s a short video about Artists on Art magazine:

I’m honored to have Artists on Art magazine as one of the sponsors of the “You be the Judge” art contest 2013. The Grand Prize winner will have the opportunity to have their artwork featured in a full length article alongside some of today’s most well known contemporary artists! For more details about the “You be the Judge” art contest and the Grand Prize package visit www.YouBeTheJudgeArtContest.com.
Artist Dan Gerhartz

Each time I see a painting by late nineteenth century artists like John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla or Anders Zorn, I feel motivated to pick up a brush and begin painting. Their work inspires me to strive for excellence and shows me the beautiful possibilities that can be achieved on canvas. Inspiration plays an important role for an artist and having access to great resources that will motivate and encourage you throughout the day are important tools of the trade. It’s one reason why I’m always on the lookout for images of paintings that I hadn’t seen before by some of these great masters. Their work continues to inspire artists today, revealing what’s possible in paint and motivating them to achieve a high standard of excellence and accomplishment.

Artist, Dan Gerhartz, is a modern day master whose work is reminiscent of the great painters of the past. Inspired by artists like Carl Von Marr and Nicolai Fechin, the work of Dan Gerhartz captures the emotions and honesty in each of his subjects and strives to record the beauty that is found in the world around us.

Photo of Dan Gerhartz in his studio from Southwest Art magazine interview.

From the warm sunlight that illuminates the hair of a child on the beach to the cool shadows that are found in the snow during a Wisconsin winter, Dan records it all with the same wonder and amazement that one senses when experiencing something for the first time. This curiosity for capturing beauty has led him to explore a wide range of subjects including figures, landscapes and still life.

I’ve had the opportunity to visit with Dan Gerhartz on a couple of occasions and can honestly say that he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Both times, he was extremely generous and forthcoming with me in sharing his knowledge and experience as a professional artist. His willingness to help educate and inspire others is a clear reflection of his outstanding character and one that continues to influence artists of all ages through his workshops, book and videos.

Whenever I’m asked about what art books I would recommend to other artists, Dan’s book, Not Far from Home, ranks as one of my favorites. It contains some of the best color reproductions that I’ve ever seen in an art book.

I wrote a blog last year about Not Far from Home, but wanted to show you what’s inside the book so that you can see the quality for yourself. Here’s a video that will give you an inside look at the book as well as some of my own thoughts about Dan Gerhartz and his work:

Dan has also produced a fantastic instructional art video which explains his approach to painting from life and demonstrates his process from start to finish. The video is called Her Mother’s Locket and contains six hours of instruction. This video is available in both a DVD version as well as an online video streaming format. It was filmed on location from Dan’s studio and contains some great information and is one that I highly recommend. This video is also included in the Grand Prize package of the “You be the Judge” Art Contest. I’m honored to have Dan Gerhartz as one of this year’s sponsors and know that the video will be a tremendous inspiration to the Grand Prize winner.

Here's a clip from Her Mother's Locket:

Dan is also getting set to release a new video, The Beginning of Autumn, which will be available in both DVD and Blue-Ray.
Jack Richeson and Co., Inc.

The equipment that I use on a daily basis plays an important role because it has the potential to either help or hinder me as I’m painting throughout the day. Instead of worrying about whether or not my canvas is going to fall off of the easel (which has happened to me more times than I would like to admit), I would rather be concentrating on other things like drawing, values, color and edges within a painting. By not having to worry about whether or not my equipment will function properly, I then have the freedom to concentrate on getting the results that I’m looking for on canvas.

When it comes to providing the highest standards in quality and craftsmanship, Jack Richeson & Co., Inc. sets the standard as a leading manufacturer and supplier of high-quality art materials. This family owned business is dedicated to providing the very best equipment available.

Jack Richeson

One of the most prominent examples of their dedication to excellence can be found in each of their BEST easels which are made from American Red Oak and are built to last a lifetime. Each one is proudly made in the U.S.A and comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty, giving the artist peace of mind and assuring that they are receiving the industry’s gold standard of excellence.

In addition to their incredibly sturdy easels, Jack Richeson & Co., Inc. also manufactures a wide variety of artist taborets to meet every budget. Ranging from compact designs to large showcase pieces, each BEST taboret is made with the same dedication and attention to detail as their BEST easels and comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty as well.

In 2004, Jack Richeson & Co., Inc. expanded their facility by adding an additional 25,000 square feet to their building, giving them the opportunity to make room for the Jack Richeson School of Art and Gallery. Each contest is capped off with the publication of a collectible, limited edition full color, hardcover exhibit book which includes the work of each of the finalists from the competition.

Speaking of competitions, you can also enter the “You be the Judge” art contest for a chance to win a $500 award certificate from Jack Richeson & Co., Inc. as part of this year’s Grand Prize package!
Plein Air Magazine

Some of the greatest moments of encouragement and inspiration in an artist’s life can come as a result of those that are shared with other artists who have a similar passion for learning. Whether it’s getting together at a studio, art class, with a group of fellow painters on location, or just having a conversation over a cup of coffee, the company of another artist who understands what you’re going through can mean all the difference in the world. Opportunities like this allow artists to exchange information, techniques, ideas and their own experiences with each other, often producing memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

The publishers of Plein Air Magazine
are actively involved in the art community and have put together
creative events that help to educate and inspire artists around the
world. Artists of all skill levels not only attend these highly anticipated events, but also have the opportunity to experience them by learning from some of today's best plein air painters. Plein Air magazine’s single largest gathering of the year takes place at the Plein Air Convention and Expo which begins this week in beautiful Monterey, California.

The convention features demonstrations from many of today’s modern masters, group painting sessions, lectures and talks on art and, of course, plein air painting.

Scott Christensen demonstrating at the 2012 Plein Air Convention and Expo.

The organizers of the event have encouraged even more art collectors and gallery directors to attend this year, giving artists more opportunities to make vital connections. These connections have proven extremely beneficial to artists and Plein Air magazine effectively bridges the gap between artist and collector during events like these.

The magazine showcases the finest paintings executed en plein air (painting outdoors from nature), as well as studio landscape paintings. Each issue features top artists and collectors worldwide, including articles on historic masters and leading contemporary painters, as well as emerging artists and collectors. Plein Air is created six times a year by a team of editorial specialists who also happen to be passionate plein air painters themselves, including M. Stephen Doherty and B. Eric Rhoads.

Steve Doherty, editor of Plein Air magazine, painting on location.

With a focus on exposing more people to the joys of collecting and creating landscape and studio paintings, the magazine has a consistently growing readership of collectors and artists from around the world. With well-crafted stories, quality design, elegant paper, and stunning reproductions of artwork, each inspiring issue of Plein Air magazine reflects an ever growing community of dedicated plein air painters and provides a valuable resource of information.
