THE FRENCH REVOLUTIONARY CALENDAR

The Republican Calendar. An attempt of the revolutionaries to introduce France into the parameters of a rational, efficient world. A "good bye" to the old rules of the Ancien Régime and the Pope. A conversion of an old world of quotidian complex operations to another easier world, more simple and more efficient. A calendar not impossed by the authority, but by the same citizens. Nevertheless, nobody felt comfortable with it, it was complicated for the international relations, and, finally, it was abolished. It was used later back again in France in 1848 and 1871, for a very short time. Benito Mussolini adopted it in 1922, during his "fascist age". Actually, it still has followers, and it's consulted by genealogists and historians. Take a look on the Republican Calendar; you'll also find a conversion to our conventional dates and today's date. Now, at this year 218 of the Republican Age.

HOW TO PRESERVE OLD DOCUMENTS

Statistics told me that this post was one of the most visited in this blog. Then, I improved the post about conservation of old documents with this new version, which is far more complete than the former one. All possible topics were reached: conservation of papers, photographs, different kind of papers and their history, all kind of photographs in the past, and a final page with a review of bacteria, insects, moistures and every "illness" the old documents might have. And, at the end, a reflexion, known by everybody but interesting to get in mind: prevention is better than cure.

HEIRS OF THE OBLIVION (About Les Enfants Trouvés)

The missed encounter of a society with itself, after giving its back to the reality so many times. They are that "other side" of the genealogy about coats of arms and noble ancestors. They are a real story about human beings, left at a side of the life. We, the genealogical searchers, must not forget them. For them, this kind of worship was the reason to be congregated in families, clans, strongly attached to their land, and united by a common origin. FRENCH CIVIL RECORDS, FOR GENEALOGISTS: A NEW WEBSITE

March 6th and it's still cold here in Miami, which is not frequent at this moment of the year. I would like to introduce you with a new website: Les Archives de la France. Well, "Guide of access to the departmental archives of metropolitan France, France Overseas and the old French colonies". That's really the title, a little long, I know, but... It has a search engine by department, by alphabetical order, and by regions. Another link to a very complete report of the French communes. It has a very well sized map with a fast access in a link directly to the pages with civil documents on line (and, of course, toward the others, not on line). And is going to have more applications this week. The index is in French language (as a courtesy for the French people), but it's linked at the home page with the English version, and the links in this post are going to the English version.

If you think it's convenient, keep the web address: it's a very useful tool for genealogists, and very complete, also the most actualized (it was finished yesterday). And you will not need a magnifier to check the map: it has a pretty good size.

GENEALOGY FRAUD (II)

In the former post we have seen that the genealogy fraud was unceasingly repeated along all the History. Today is still between us. Last name's coat of arms are constantly offered in the web, even selling copyrights on them, what is to say like being pretty close to the illegal, as well as "Family X Books", which resembles more a phone's directory than another thing. And a lot of similar stuff is offered to the people every day.
Before the appearance of Internet, the fraud was covered behind the lack of available sources, at the hand, where to verify the information. At that time we were forged by the forgers. Today, with all this abundance of information, we are defrauded by the innocents. We can see, today, amateur genealogists proud of having in their family trees more than 1,500 related surnames. Do they really think that they have more than 1,500 relatives? Let's assume that they are reasonable people and they don't pretend such a thing. What's the point, then, for that enormous compilation, competing with the white pages? What they are really doing, actually, is to upload extremely heavy family trees to the databases, with a high percentage of non verified data. Many of them find out related surnames, and, immediately, they are uploading whole family trees -without even checking the source- to their owns. The Mormons had filed in their genealogical library a giant database, trying to give salvation to the souls of the deceased, and to baptize them into the Mormon religion, if it's possible going back up to Noah's family and his Ark's descendants. This is very useful as a base of consultation, no doubt. But, here comes the first warning: all this data is received with no previous verification (it's impossible to do it in every case, of course; they only ask for real names and a complete description of whole birth, marriage and decease dates) and it's important to be aware that all of this is only a base of consultation, not a trustworthy information by itself. All data obtained from third parties must be properly verified, crossing the information with another documents, enforcing to sustain the veracity of those reports. All serious genealogists know very well that genealogy is a travel, not a final destination. And, as good researchers, they ought to be skeptics as the investigators in the best thriller movies. Precisely there is where lies the emotion of genealogy. I have several examples of wrong information in my own familiar genealogy: five histories about my Briand family published in the web with the same wrong concepts (they perhaps copied and pasted each other): my ancestor Alain Briand is recorded as the father of Michel Briand. Alain was born in 1550, and Michel in 1558. Nobody complained about this inconsistency. Some of them "fixed the problem" saying that Alain was born "near to 1530"... It was very hard for me to find out that this Alain, married with Guillemette Guyheneuc, was Michel's brother. In other of my family trees, written by others, some of my Acadian ancestors are recorded as being baptized few days after they born "into the LDS church", in 1770. Sixty years before the Mormon church was founded by Joseph Smith. Moreover, taking account that Mormons does not perform baptisms for infants. And I might follow up showing more and more examples of similar situations.
So that, if we were before defrauded by the bad ones, now we are also defrauded by the good ones (enthusiastic and careless compilers of genealogical data).
In my own genealogy I've published all the original civil acts, trying to give a proper back up to everything I'm exposing on there. They can be verified in the correspondent parishes or municipal registers. I don't, sincerely, have found many genealogists doing the same. Should be an obligation -if not legal, at least from the ethic point of view- to do it. If we don't take the family history seriously, and we don't participate actively in the emotion of the research, about verifying what we are receiving, and if we are not conscious that all what is published, microfilmed, or filed in some way, must be verified before being taken for granted, we are going to loose the adventure of the research. And maybe, we also loose, between all that confusion, of knowing who our real relatives are, and which our real family history was. Sometimes, our true stories are more interesting than all those myths inherited from ...who knows who.

GENEALOGY FRAUD (I)

False names, doubtful information, non verified kinships: stay alert. Forgers are on the look out. And much more than we think: 55% of the genealogies published in Internet have serious mistakes, according with an statistic of the Genealogy Fraud Website. Surnames, dates, civil data information, are published without any control. Do we have to believe that all what we read in Internet is true, only because it was published on the web? The incorrect data are not recent; perhaps they remain dragged on there since a long time ago. But every day new falsifications are contributed to the social network. It's recommendable to be aware.

WHO WILL TELL OUR STORY?

They will. Our children. And the grandchildren of our children...and who knows. Those kids who actually are going to the elementary school, or maybe those who still can't speak, or those who are not still born.
It's very important that we give them access to the world of the genealogy, to the recognition and research of those who preceded us.

Why? For two very important reasons: 1) They might have a better personality, well posicioned and structured. 2) And this is a very interesting reason: the genealogic research, amongst other aspects, implies that they could be aware about the curiosity for the History, or Geography ("where did the grandfather come from?" "And where is that located?"...); the recognition of all that past world that they have at their back; which will lead to explain a lot of features of the present world!.. In consequence, all of what the school can not succeed about to get them interested about. The genealogy, through their own will, will achieve the objective, taking them from the hands toward all those disgusting matters, that in their learning, are a tedious enumeration of weird names and unknown and not attractive dates and locations.

It would be more reasons, of course, as that they could feel affection for their families, their familiar patrimony, that they could develop an interest about organization and classification, that they become by theirselves people avid of knowledge, without being obligued to do so. That they could learn what is "hipotesis-thesis-demonstration", but in the real life, in the practice of something. Who knows if we are not creating people with authentic curiosity, future scientific discoverers, changing their ways toward the positive...

How to achieve this? Let's talk, let's organize the ideas, we have to be interactives for this work. Let's address to the main genealogical sites or companies, let's make them proposals. Let's give an impulse to the organization. Also we could make in our children or granchildren's schools "genealogic shows", asking them for their old granparents pictures, or for information about their forbears. Wouldn't it be funny for them?

Nobody has been worried seriously about this matter until now. Let's be the first of all; the land is virgin. Let's be the pioneers of a better focused new generation. If we don't do things like this, what we are here for? This is our mission; to give them, besides our genes, the possibility of another mentality, to make them better people.

No matter if you don't have a genealogy. In 200 years you will be a valuable reference for your descendants. All of us will be their ancestors in the future, and maybe they will comment about us, that we have been the pioneers of the public interest in genealogy.

Until now, genealogy is an activity handled mostly by elder people, most of them filling with it the emptiness of their retirements. Somebody ever asked to the children if they don't want to be active participants in this matter?

After all, if we don't take care of this, who will tell our story?

MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER WAS A CRIMINAL

Some people might say something like this. But, generally, they don't do it. However, according to an article of the Daily Telegraph of Sidney, Australia, not only many genealogies have criminals in their stories; even the ex-Prime Minister, John Howard, who finished his period in 2007, has some criminal ancestors in his own. His father Lyall Howard's maternal great-great-grandfather William Tooley was convicted of complicity in the theft of a tortoiseshell watch and transported for life on the ship Fanny in 1816. This is not surprising: between 1788 and 1868, being still Australia a British colony, more than 150,000 convicts were transported to Australia to accomplish with their sentences. In 1851 gold mines were discovered in Australia, and then they stop to send convicts to the country. Why the convicts should be rewarded working on gold mines? Society of Australian Genealogists executive officer Heather Garnsey said many family tree enthusiasts were keen to find a link to a convict when researching their backgrounds. It's important to mention that those "crimes" at that age, could be our "misdemeanors" today, like to steal a piece of bread, to cut a tree, or to steal poultry from a farm. But certainly also were, amongst them, real criminals and murders. Mrs. Garnsey tells us that years before, australian society used to reject to talk about this past. But around 1980 "it became a badge of honor". Now the families take the approach with very good sense of humour: they use to say that, for them, the convict period it's the equivalent of royalty. It wouldn't be a bad idea if we dare to reward with a badge of honor, and all our affection, to all this people who can show publicly their hidden and embarrasing ancestors. Genealogy is in permanent transformation and evolution, and should become a modern, efficient, proactive, and... thrilling discipline.

GENEALOGY: A NEW MODEL OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

(Or How to Play the Prisoner's Dilemma)

That the genealogy is actually in fashion, there's no doubt. But what is really interesting about this fashion, is that, from the beginning of its revival as a popular hobby, it was manifested as a remarkable example, an authentic model of universal cooperation. Cooperation is one of the most important engines of the evolution. Why? For a simple reason: everybody wins. To enlighten this matter we can appeal to a known theoretical problem: The Prisoner's Dilemma. Originally framed in 1950 by Merrill Flood and Melvin Drescher, years later William Tucker formalized the game with prison sentence payoffs. In the generalized form, is a card's game with a banker and two players, with only two cards each: "cooperate" and "defect". Each player puts one card face-down in front of the banker. At the end of the turn, the banker turns over both cards and give them the payments according to these rules: 1) If both players cooperate, they will be rewarded with $ 300.- each. 2) If one player defects and the other one cooperates, the first one is rewarded with $ 500.- and the one who cooperated receives the sucker's payoff of a $ 100.- punishment. 3) If both players defect, they receive the punishment of $ 10.- each for mutual defection, which is not a benefit for anybody. Then, the question is: how would you play? If you evaluate that your opponent plays "cooperate", your best option is "defect", of course (you will gain $ 500.-). But if you think that the other player plays "defect", your best option is not "cooperate", (you may loose $ 100.-) but "defect", indeed. As you see, always the best option is "defect". No doubt. Then, both players evaluate both possible outcomes, and they play "defect" each. And they loose $ 10.- each. Magically, the best option was transformed in the worst one for everybody. In the next hand, you know that your opponet already played "defect", and you cannot run the risk of being punished with $ 100.- if you cooperate. In the case that you had played "cooperate" in the former hand, then, you'll play "defect" now by retaliation. As the other player thinks in the same way, because he won a good prize, or he cannot run the risk either, the same outcome than before is repeatedly played back again. Only if both players understand that the best option is "cooperate" for both of them, and they initially play that way, they will gain $ 300.- dollars always in every turn. This dilemma was applied to all the human interaction and to all the living beings in general. In biology, ethology, politics, economy, sociology, sports, etc. And to all the relations between biologic structures. And, as we are biologic structures, we unconsciously follow this game. Take a look at the world in which we live, and tell me if it's not this way. An experiment based in this dilemma (Tversky, Amos, at the MIT, 2004), showed, as an evidence, that as too much, only the 40% of the players choice the mutual cooperation. You can make a mind game trying to apply the dilemma to whatever you want: it always matches in every interaction in the real life.
It's obvious that genealogy, with its aspect of international cooperation, is a step forward in human evolution. It doesn't mean that we don't have to pay for what is valuated in money, of course. But this wonderful genealogist's world should be considered with more attention by all the social institutions. It evolved faster than others, and with firm steps. Just, exactly, because of its characteristical smart universal cooperation.

TO DESTRUCTURATE AND TO REINTEGRATE

Any observation, inevitably tends to fragmentation. For example, when we observe a moment in the time of our ancestors, we separate it from everything else. We separate and focus it to look at it well. All our education is based in separating the matters, without relating them.

But nobody bothers about to connect random facts. And this leads to the dispersion of what naturally is related, and to the disinterest of the learners, and to their attention not motivated about the chain of events.

Teachers speak about the French Revolution, but they don't relate to the influence that the work of a writer as Michel de Montaigne, 200 years before, could have had on the approach of humanity which allowed to address toward this process.

My proposal is a new vision of genealogical facts: that every identification in the time will be shaped by an integration of all the related events: historical, philosophical, literary, political and even geographical. My proposal is to destructurate the whole educational program that we have melt in our brains, just to build another one, where no thread could remain unplugged. Only this way we will be able to accede in a conscious way to a coherent interpretation of the facts.

If somebody takes a look to the post on the right, called " The Renaissance ", it will be seen that on there the explanation of the historical moment integrates absolutely everything. Even the "style" of explanation blends the literarature with the history. Is not a coincidence that I've opted for the Renaissance to do this, -probably it happened unconsciously-, so those men of that epoch were not fragmentators; they dominated several sciences simultaneously, as Leonardo Da Vinci , and they were relating them suitably, which was allowing them to advance intensively upon each one of the topics.

The proposal, then, is: to return to the pluralized approach: to return to look at the world as a consequence of everything. It's true that this specialization that we have today is due to the difficulty of to include all the matters in the same storage, because of the scientific advance that we have had. But in our case, we do not need to be experts in detail about everything: we are historical interpreters of families, and with a few basic notions, - the more complete they could be, is of course, better-, well integrated, we will be moving along like fishes in the ocean.

That's precisely the objective of this blog; to discover an understandable vision of all what is around us; towards the integration of the universal thought in a simple event, as the freedom or not of marrying without paternal assent that our forbears used to have. Hopefully we could take the right way, and the genealogy will turn into something much more transcendental.

ARE WE HAPPIER THAN OUR ANCESTORS?

How might we compare the feelings of that people of the previous centuries against our current people? Have we learned to be, in the 21st century, happier than them?

IMPUDIQUE ATAVISM

“This it is the line from which I descend ", was commented by a friend of mine, to me, days ago. She referred to an Irish prince of the 14th Century. And she satisfied her ego thinking that she was descending from nobility houses. Again I returned to think that the identity is a fiction, a simple myth constructed by our imagination. There is persistence in the construction of genealogical trees about to show honorable families, abnegates, and promoters of real epic migratory deeds.
And, what if everything was the opposite? What would be changed? If someone descends from the Marquis of Sade, does he or she be labeled necessarily as a potential perverse? And what if the honorable Irish prince would have been more perverse and voluptuous than the same Marquis of Sade? I descend from nobles with dominions, from captains of corsair ships and from notaries of the Navy of France. But who can guarantee about the moral virtues of the lordly nobles and, inversely, why the corsair captains, despite their violent and adventurous connotation, cannot have been excellent persons, generous and solidarious with their peers? And finally, are not we the sons of our own works, without considering the moral quality of our ancestors? If I descend from the Genghis Khan, have I to go out riding a horse and with a sword in my hand to behead people along a central street, jumping over the traffic? If our genealogical search is sincere, and we look for identities, we must find real entities. Without shame, without fears. Every moral even that that the society does not share, is immersed inside the human condition. The real discovery is to find our ancestors, such as they have been, human fallible beings, with their authentic biographical dimension. There might have been misery and selfishness in a wealthy noble, and a poetical song to the life into the dreams of a poor farmer from a hamlet in the middle of the mountains. Let's not use to the genealogy to arbitrarily construct our own character: let's the life to speak by itself, in our case and in that of our ancestors. We cannot modify them already - except by the way of subjective interpretation-, but we still are in this dynamic relations’ process in which our honesty can play in favor on having done the difference between a mediocre and conventional exhibition and a good water-color of excellent quality.
