The Best Movies Of 2009

First off, let me state this was a terrible year for movies. Originality fell along the wayside as the effects of a desperate economy took hold of Hollywood. Producers and studios largely relied on sequels and remakes of existing properties. In addition, we had the whole Twilight phenomena, the effects of which will likely to blanket us with vampires and werewolves at the cinema for years to come.
But as always, no matter how bleak a studio's releases may be, there are still a few gems. Here's my top 11 picks for a few films released this year that are totally worth your time.

11. Where The Wild Things Are
Directed By: Spike Jonze
Starring: Max Records, Catherine Keener, James Gandolfini, Forest Whitaker, Catherine O'Hara, Forest Whitaker
Why? What was supposed to be a children's movie took a strong left turn when Spike Jonez took the helm. Most people will get lost trying to follow the literal narrative of this story, but the smarter bunch will see the big picture. It's amazing how well they turned this 10 or so page picture book into a 90 minute movie.

10. I Love You, Man

Directed By: John Hamburg
Starring: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, J.K. Simmons, Rashida Jones, Jon Favreau, Jaime Pressly, Andy Samberg

Why? Sleeper hit for me. I didn't think Paul Rudd could be this funny without Steve Carell, Will Ferell, or Seth Rogan at his side. Very quotable and hilarious.

Directed By: James Cameron

Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez
Why? Now...I have to admit something. I'm putting this movie on the list and I haven't seen it yet. How is this warranted? Well let's look at the facts; this is Jim Cameron's (the director of Terminator 2, Aliens, The Abyss,) first movie since Titanic grossed a bajillion dollars. It’s a story he's dreamed about making for 15 years. He made it specifically for IMAX 3D and even invented new cameras for it. Plus, the reviews have been pretty damn good for an action movie. My favorite part is how people are puzzled by the trailers. This is a big big BIG budget movie and it's not a remake, or based on a book, or a comic...and I think that has a lot of people confused. It's a totally original idea and evidently, it rocks. Take all this in account and it's pretty much a must-see for '09.

8. Paranormal Activity

Directed By: Oren Peli
Starring: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat

Why? Everyone was asking “Is it scary?” The answer, yes. It’s scary yet also brilliant because it was made with two people, a video camera, and maybe one special effect. This movie had me very nervous and also angry, because I didn’t think of the idea to make it first.

7. The Hurt Locker
Directed By: Kathryn Bigelow

Starring: Jeremy Renner, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, Guy Pearce, Evangeline Lilly

Why? Probably not a lot of people caught this one, but it's an amazing Iraq War movie, probably the best. I won't ruin it for you, but I'll just say it's one of the most intense flicks of the year.

6. The Hangover

Directed By: Todd Phillips
Starring: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis
Why? The buzz on this movie was huge from the beginning. It stars The Nard Dog, the jerk from Wedding Crashers, and Zack Galifianakis (who you'll see all over the place in the next year) and proved that audiences will go see a well-written comedy no matter who stars in it.

5. Star Trek

Directed By: J.J. Abrams

Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg

Why? J.J. Abrams knows how to make movies and is probably the closest thing we have to the next Spielberg. I really hated putting a remake or sequel on this list, (Trek manages to be both,) but this was just what a summer blockbuster should be: Fun, exciting, and new.

4. (500) Days Of Summer

Directed By: Marc Webb

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel
Why? This is a little indie film for the chicks. I loved the original style of it and the way they presented the story. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, you are now forgiven for GI Joe.

3. Inglorious Basterds

Directed By: Quentin Tarantino

Starring: Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Diane Kruger

Why? C'mon, it's Tarantino right? This guy's absolutely obsesses over his writing. Remember how after Pulp Fiction it took like 5 years for him to make another movie? It's because he was writing this. He was so into it that he couldn't end it, had to put it down, go make Kill Bill and Grindhouse, and then come back. While some parts feel like it's been cut down too much, it's totally not what I expected from the previews but I can still watch it over and over.

2. Zombieland

Directed By: Ruben Fleischer
Starring: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin
Why? Now this was fun. I heard good things about this funny zombie pic, but I never thought I'd like it as much as I did. The minute they started explaining the rules of survival for Zombieland, I was in. Originally it was written as a TV series, so expect sequels. And go rent it before someone ruins the cameo.

1. Up In The Air

Directed By: Jason Reitman

Starring: George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Jason Bateman

Why? Yep, I know. My number one is a movie not yet released. But again, the signs are just too strong. First off, yes, it has one of my favorite actors in the lead. But he's one of my favorite actors because he makes smart choices with his roles. Secondly, wait, in the trailer, was that Jason Bateman? Yes it was. Was that Zack Galifniakis? Yep. Third, it’s directed by Jason Reitman, whose last two movies (Thank You For Smoking, Juno) I absolutely loved. Fourth, the movie's not a musical, period piece, or bio pic, but it's now the frontrunner for best movie of the year and getting nominations like crazy. Go catch this one, because it's all you're going to hear about leading up to The Oscars.

Back To The Future Side By Side Comparison

In the years between Back to the Future and Back to the Future II, Michael J. Fox visibly aged and the actress playing his girlfriend was replaced by Elizabeth Shue. So, to show the closing scene from the first film as the opening of the second, it was necessary to completely reshoot it.

Anyway, as you can see below, someone has made a side-by-side comparison of the sequence so you can now needlessly critique how well Robert Zemeckis and crew recreated the scene. The audio is layered together as well, and for some reason hearing a duet of Docs saying, in unison, "Roads? Where we're going, we don't need... roads," is utterly hypnotizing:

The Best (Movies) Of The Rest Of 2009

Remember last year? Iron Man, Step Brothers, friggin' Dark Knight? Pretty good year for movies. It's too bad this one's sucked hard. Really hard. DaVinci Code 2, Terminator 4, X-Men 4, Harry Potter 14, and the biggest movie so far is Star Trek 11 (not kidding), and even that was barely considered a blockbuster.

I know this Depp movie Public Enemies looks really really good, and hell, it could very well be the top dog of 2009. But after that....it's anyone's game. I haven't heard about too much of anything post-Depp, with a few exceptions. But I looked ahead anyway and found a few gems coming up that may be worth catching...

Director: Mike Judge
Stars: Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Ben Affleck, Mila Kunis, J.K. Simmons
The Plot: The owner of a flower-extract plant (Bateman), tries to contend with myriad personal and professional problems, such as his potentially unfaithful wife (Wiig), a hot new temp (Kunis), and employees who want to take advantage of him.
Why The Hype: There is some funny coming this year (and most all of it includes Jason Bateman). But the rumor is, this film really brings back the Office Space-ish Mike Judge. Plus, I'm sure those of you who saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall can agree that having Kunis in there doesn't hurt.

The Time Traveler's Wife

Director: Robert Schwentke
Stars: Eric Bana, Rachel McAdams, Ron Livingston
The Plot: A romantic drama about a Chicago librarian (Bana) with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage.
Why The Hype: I'm a sucker for time travel movies and Rachel McAdams

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard

Director: Neal Brennan
Stars: Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, David Koechner, Ed Helms, Will Ferrell, Alan Thicke
The Plot: Used-car liquidator Don Ready (Piven) is hired by a flailing auto dealership to turn their Fourth of July sale into a majorly profitable event.
Why The Hype: Produced by Will Ferrel and Adam McKay's company, directed by the guy who helped mold Chapelle's Show, and this trailer:

The Informant

Director: Steven Soderbergh
Stars: Matt Damon, Tony Hale, Patton Oswalt
The Plot: The U.S. government decides to go after an agri-business giant with a price-fixing accusation, based on the evidence submitted by their star witness, company-man-turned-whistleblower Mark Whitacre (Damon).
Why The Hype: I'm always amazed at Soderbergh's work, and here's he's shooting for my favorite genre: Dark Comedy.
Release Date: 09/18

The Invention of Lying

Director: Ricky Gervais, Matthew Robinson
Stars: Ricky Gervais, Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, Jennifer Garner, Christopher Guest, Rob Lowe, Patrick Stewart
The Plot: A comedy set in a world where no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain.
Why The Hype: I think Gervais is hysterical in everything, and when you back him up with this cast, I'm pretty sure I'll get my money's worth.

The Road

Director: John Hillcoat
Stars: Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Kodi Smit-McPhee
The Plot: A father (Mortensen) and son (Smit-McPhee) walk for months across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic landscape in search of civilization.
Why The Hype: The book is great from what I've heard, from the author of No Country For Old Men.

The Box

Director: Richard Kelly
Stars: James Marsden, Cameron Diaz, Frank Langella
The Plot: A small wooden box arrives on the doorstep of a married couple, who open it and become instantly wealthy. Little do they realize that opening the box also kills someone they do not know.
Why The Hype: Kelly really let people down with Southland Tales, his follow up to Donnie Darko. But he's back to his regular form here, with "dark, supernatural elements, requisite non sequiturs, Hitchcocky plot twists and an indier-than-thou soundtrack."
Release Date: 10/30

The Wolf Man

Director: Joe Johnston
Stars: Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt
The Plot: Nobleman Lawrence Talbot (Del Toro) returns to his ancestral homeland, where his brother has gone missing and villagers are being killed by a nightmarish beast. The search reunites him with his estranged father (Hopkins) and draws him near to his brother's fiancée (Blunt), however, Talbot's lager concern is the discovery of a side to himself which he never could have imagined existed ...
Why The Hype: Brilliant casting, and I'm looking forward to seeing a werewolf movie with modern effects.

Nine

Director: Rob Marshall
Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren
The Plot: Famous film director Guido Contini (Day-Lewis) struggles to find harmony in his professional and personal lives, as he engages in dramatic relationships with his wife, his mistress, his muse, his agent, and his mother.
Why The Hype: Day-Lewis, playing a director, with tons of hot women.

Release Date: 11/25

The Lovely Bones

Director: Peter Jackson
Stars: Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg, Saoirse Ronan
The Plot: Young Susie watches over her family from heaven as they deal with the aftermath of her brutal rape and murder.
Why The Hype: It's a movie that's been in development forever, and I'm curious to see what Jackson does without giant CGI creatures.

Couples Retreat

Director: Peter Billingsley (AKA Ralphie)
Stars: Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis, Faizon Love
The Plot: Four couples settle into a tropical-island resort for a vacation. While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the others fail to realize that participation in the resort's therapy sessions is not optional.
Why The Hype: The cast.

Shutter Island

Director: Martin Scorsese
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Emily Mortimer, Mark Ruffalo
The Plot: When a psychotic killer (Mortimer) disappears from a mental institution on Shutter Island, a pair of U.S. Marshals (Ruffalo and DiCaprio) race against the clock in order to track her down.
Why The Hype: It's Scorsese's first flick since The Departed. Yes, I know he's got DiCaprio in it yet another one...but this guys' a legend and it's written by the guy who did Mystic River, one of the most bad ass movies of all time.

Inglourious Basterds

Director: Quentin Tarantino
Stars: Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eli Roth
The Plot: An American-led killing squad known as "The Basterds" terrorize the Nazis in German-occupied France during World War II.
Why The Hype: Remember when Pulp Fiction came out? And Tarantino was hailed as the next coming in the cinema world? He followed Pulp with Jackie Brown a year and a half later and then...nothing for 6 years until Kill Bill. What was he doing all that time? Writing this. Evidently he started with the idea of a more extreme Dirty Dozen, but the story got away from him and he had to stop writing for a while. So he made Kill Bill and came back to this. All I know is, I read the first scene and it was pretty amazing.

Where the Wild Things Are

The Plot: Young, mischievous Max is sent to bed without his supper, but when his bedroom turns in to a magical jungle landscape filled with strange creatures, he embarks on a wild imaginary adventure.
Why The Hype: Originally, it was word that Jonze's was using a combination of real people in giant Snufalupagus suits with CGI faces. Then it became more and more about Jonze's fights with the studio over how scary the film actually was. Either way, I can't think of a better director to bring this classic book to the big screen.

Sherlock Holmes

Director: Guy Ritchie
Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams
The Plot: Detective Sherlock Holmes (Downey Jr.) and his stalwart partner Watson (Law) engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.
Why The Hype: Um, RDJ directed by Guy Richie? In a studio pic that has a decent budget? Think of the style and comedy of Snatch mixed with the wit of classic Holmes, only with better acting and more coherent speech.

The Plot: A band of humans are pitted in a battle against a distant planet's indigenous population.
Why The Hype: Three words: James Cameron directing. Remember how amazing The Abyss's special effects seemed when it came out? How great was the action and effects in T2? Yeah, he not only directed those, he created new special effects techniques for them. Oh and let's not forget his last directorial effort, Titanic, which is the highest grossing film in history. This time he's taking on 3D and promises an experience so unique to movie goers, he had to create his own cameras just to get the effects he wanted.

If you have any sense of comedy, you know that 30 Rock is one of the funniest shows on television. The dry wit is probably too fast and too smart for most viewers, but for me, there's honestly no other character on TV that makes me laugh harder than Alec Baldwin's portrayal of NBC Executive Jack Donaghy. Jack: Lemon, I don't know how to do this.
Liz: I know.
Jack: I don't get it. It's not the fear. I thrive on fear.
Liz: Yeah, you're lookin' out a fake window right now, by the way.
Jack: I bow hunt polar bear. I once drove a rental car into the Hudson to practice escaping. And it's not the public speaking, there's just something about performing I can't wrap my brain around. All this creative crap. Acting. Ahhh. I've never been able to do it. Never.

Jack: If you were any other woman on Earth, I would be turned on right now.

Jack: Poker night? How many play?
Liz: Oh, you're not going to come to our crappy poker night, are you?
Jack: No, I'm not going to come.
Liz: [relieved] Good!
Jack: I bluffed. I am coming.

Jack: You are a puzzle, Kenneth Ellen, and I'm going to solve you. Yes I am.

Jack: Kenneth, I really wasn't going to fire you, I just wanted to remind you that I could. I want you back here at six in the morning sharp so you can sweep up these shrimp tails.
Kenneth: Yes sir, Mr. Donaghy!
Jack: I have my eye on you Kenneth.
Kenneth: You will not be disappointed sir.
Liz: Well it was nice of you to let him keep his job.
Jack: The Italians have a saying, Lemon, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." And, although they've never won a war or mass-produced a decent car, in this area they are correct.
[Kenneth unlocks his bike and they watch him happily ride away]
Jack: In five years we'll either be working for him, or dead at his hand.

Jack: [about Rosemary] Fire her...and don't ever make me talk to a woman that old again.

Liz: Oh you should do it. It will be hilarious.
Jack: Well, that will be a refreshing change of pace for the show, won't it?

Jack: Your shoes.
Liz: Well, I'm straight.
Jack: Those shoes are definitely bi-curious.

Liz: I'm not dressed for that.
Jack: You're dressed for Burger King. Should we make it Burger King?

Liz: I'm feeling pretty drunk.
Jack: Well, it's business drunk, it's like rich drunk. Either way, it's legal to drive.

Jack: Of course it was. It would have been expensive and practical and offensive to both the red states and the gayer blue states.
Cooter: This is exactly what we're looking for.
Jack: A guaranteed disaster. Like eating a burrito before sex.

Jack: Jonathan's going to round up all the cool Republican celebrities.
Liz: [laughs] Like who, Chuck Norris?
Jack: No, C-No and I had a falling out after I switched to another dojo.

Liz: Wait, you’ve already thought about fighting her?
Jack: Everytime I meet a new person, I figure out how I’m gonna fight them.

Jack: When will this be made public, sir? I want my mother to know before she dies so goes to her grave a defeated woman.

Liz: Didn't you just get a haircut two days ago?
Jack: I get my hair cut every two days. After all, your hair is your headsuit. I'm going to a party tonight honoring Robert Novack, it's being thrown by John McCain and Jack Bauer.
Liz: Em, I don't think he's real.
Jack: [laughs] I assure you, Lemon, John McCain is very real.

Liz: What's with the cookie jar?
Jack: I collect them.
Liz: Really, is that some kind of unresolved childhood thing?
Jack: Nice try. Eh, we never had any cookiejars in my home because my mother never baked a silly cookies 'cause she never felt we deserved any cookies so obviously it has nothing to do with my childhood.
Liz: But that cookie jar says 'mom' on it.
Jack: Er, I don't think so. I've always viewed it as an upside down 'wow'.

Liz: I'm telling you, this is my year. I feel like the show's going to be great and I'm very positive that I'm going to meet someone else.
Jack: Women your age are more likely to be mauled at the zoo than get married.

Jack: Tracy, I don't believe in soulmates and I worked to hard to get where I am to sacrifice it for some woman. I don't care if she is beautiful, brilliant and does it like her father's a minister.

Jack: One minute you're newlyweds, making love on the floor of the Concorde. Then, before you know it, your lawyers are arguing over who gets to keep the box your dog defecates in.
Liz: You taught your dog to poop in a box?
Jack: Bianca did. But, damn it, I want that box.

Jack: This conversation has taken an unfortunate turn.

Jack: My brother Eddie sells faulty sprinkler systems to elementary schools, my cousin Tim fixes NBA games, my mother's an Olympic-level racist, but as for the rest, they're too drunk to do much of anything... unless getting thrown out of a Chili's is a crime.

Star Trek Will Be Very, Very Good

I am not a Star Trek fan. Let's get that straight right now. Never watched the shows, only saw parts of the movies, like the one with the whales. However, being the insane Lost fan that I am, I always take notice whenever Mr. Jeffrey Jacob Abrams does something. So, when I heard he was doing a Star Trek prequel type deal, I was interested. Mildly, though.

But now there's some real signs that this is going to be one hell of a movie.

The film was originally supposed to come out last December. The studios then moved the date to May 8th, exactly one week after X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now this made me sit up and take notice. X-Men: The Last Stand made $459,359,555 worldwide and was the 4th highest grossing movie of 2006. To change the release date for Star Trek to the week after the next X-Men installment meant the studios saw the pic, and were very, very confident in it.

Then came the odd release. You see, when the studios preview a film and see that it sucks, they don't let anyone see it before the official release date. No early screenings for critics, no word of mouth, nothing. Now, guess what happens if the movie is good? That's right, they let tons of people see it. Well, Star Trek is already being screened overseas right now. It has been. A full month ahead of the release date.

But these are all little signals most people wouldn't pick up on. Most people look to the critics and wait to hear what they have to say. Well, yesterday the critics started talking.

"The most exhilarating Trek to date"

"The result is a triumph, certain to be regarded as not just one Trek's better moments, but one of the finest films made in the sci-fi genre."

- The Austrailian

"… Abrams' smart and breathless space adventure feels like a summer blockbuster that just couldn't stay in the box another month. Paramount won't need any economic stimulus package with all the money it'll rake in with this one globally, and a follow-up won't arrive soon enough. …"

At this moment, it has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Knowing all that, knowing how good it's supposed to be, watch the trailer below. It sure feels like this is goinf to be much better than just another Star Trek movie.

None of us will know for sure how good it is until we actually see it, but if you're interested in this type of movie, it seems like it'll give you your bang for your buck. As for me, my dad was always a big Sci-Fi/Star Trek fan, and it just so happens this flick opens on his birthday.

"The Wrestler" Movie Trivia

At one point Nicolas Cage was set to star in the movie. He was seen at a Ring of Honor wrestling event in NYC doing research for the part.

The shooting schedule was 35 days.

Fox Searchlight bought the North American rights to the film at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival for a reported $4 million.

Reportedly, both Bruce Springsteen and Mickey Rourke were paid no money for their contributions towards the film.

Artie Lange, John Ventimiglia, and Dave Attell screen tested for the role of Nick.

The main climatic scene featuring the rematch between Randy "The Ram" Robinson and The Ayatollah was taped at two Ring of Honor events on 3/14/08 and 3/15/08.

Cameo: [Robert D. Siegel] The film's writer makes an appearance at the start of the film as a fan getting an autograph from Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke).

Darren Aronofsky and Marisa Tomei attended the same high school, Edward R. Murrow High School.

World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Famer Afa Anoai ("The Wild Samoan") trained Rourke and choreographed the matches. His daughter, Vale Anoai, plays a brief role as a pharmacist.

Darren Aronofsky revealed that Mickey Rourke was the first choice to play Randy "The Ram" Robinson but the studio wanted Nicolas Cage. Aronofsky fought to have Mickey Rourke as "The Ram", and ultimately won out.

Only two days after its completion "The Wrestler" was screened on Venice Film Festival and walked off with the Golden Lion award for Best Picture.

Due to the film's modest budget, W. Axl Rose donated the use of Guns 'n' Roses' "Sweet Child O'Mine" free of charge for the final match.

Randy "The Ram" Robinson's van is a Dodge Ram.

The scene where a fan hands "The Ram" a prosthetic leg is based on an actual event from an ECW show where a fan repeatedly yelled "use my leg" and eventually tossed his prosthetic leg to Tommy Dreamer who in turn used it on his opponent.

Star Mickey Rourke received his first Oscar and Golden Globe nominations due to his work on this film.

The film reportedly moved wrestler/actor Roddy Piper so much, he broke down and cried after a screening.

The video game Randy and his child neighbor play in the trailer was created especially for the film and was fully playable.

Marisa Tomei's first day of shooting was the scene where she gives Mickey Rourke a lap dance.

Mickey Rourke actually bladed (cut his own forehead with a razor blade as many wrestlers do) in this film to add realism to the role.

Randy "The Ram" Robinson shares characteristics of the two biggest wrestling icons of the 1980s: Hulk Hogan and Randy "Macho Man" Savage. The look of the Ram,with the long blonde hair and tremendous physique as well as the steroid use is obviously Hoganesque while the "Ram Jam" (a flying double forearm smash off the top rope) is inspired by Savage's "Flying Elbow" even down to the pose before executing it. The Ram's feud with "The Ayatollah" also mimics the feud that Hogan had with the "Iron Shiek" that made him a venerable superstar and the face of 1980s and early 90s wrestling.
