Radio Station

Shift Ministries, an organization dedicated to helping bring media resources to the local church and missionaries worldwide, is in the process of starting a radio station in it's hometown city of Hazlehurst, Georgia.

This low power FM station would bring the message of Christ to you young people through positive music, a 24/7 teen help line, and the opportunity for young people to help with the station. It will be funded solely through donations from the community and minimal paid programming.

If you would like to discuss having a 1 hour paid programming block on Saturday mornings or if you and/or your organization would like to donate or have a shorter block during the week please get in touch.

Tonight history was made.

No matter where you are on the political spectrum, what you believe spiritually, or who you voted for we all witnessed history.

While I don't believe in many of the things he has stood for in the past, I don't believe in many of the things he campaigned on, and my personal view is that he does not have the experience needed to be President... he nonetheless will be President.

And while I could use this moment to explain why I'm disappointed I am instead going to share my hopes.

I hope Barack Obama is a good President. I hope he really brings hope and change to America.

I hope this change isn't socialism or Marxism as the talk radio people say it will be.

I hope this change isn't immediately ending the war without thought to the consequences of this action down the road.

I hope Barack Obama really knows Jesus, I hope he prays and I hope we as a nation pray for him.

Tonight was not the end of America or a night to be fearful. God is still in control.

So tonight/today as you talk about this historic night among your friends I pray that you will pray for the next four years. Barack, in his speech 90 minutes ago, was absolutely correct when he said he could not run the country on his own. He needs more than just the support of his party or the American people. He needs the support that only comes when you are blanketed in prayer. In my own life recently I have seen the miraculous power of prayer and I challenge all of you, whether you are Christian or Jewish or Muslim or anything in between, I challenge you to pray for President Obama. Pray for his safety, pray for his decisions, pray for his faith, pray for his family, and pray for the nation he has been chosen to lead.

An Uphill Battle: Life in Hazlehurst

This post is an honest look at the city I now call home. Before you read this please realize that I am not in any way trying to put any one down or attack this city. I am simply just pointing out areas I know need change and some ways I am willing to help with this change. Please do not take this personally.

As with any big change in someone's life I have had a lot of doubt whether or not my move down here was what God wanted. I realize in some situations any choice is the right choice and there isn't always a right or wrong decision (For instance I don't think God really cares if you drink 1% or 2% milk) so maybe in this situation God really didn't have an opinion?

But nonetheless I moved down here with some sense of certainty that God had in fact opened this door for me. The first few months were great, the business side of things is still great, but the whole living in small town America isn't for me. A recent visit to an online forum about the city of Hazlehurst showed me just how divided and spiteful this town is. The amount of drama and scandal going on in the city hall of this town is absolutely ridiculous. The amount of gossip and talk of "who is cheating on who" or "who is dealing with what" is crazy. The amount of slander that gets posted on online news sites about the town is crazy.

The percentage of teenage pregnancy, the drop out rate, the amount of underage drinking, and worst of all the amount of people who do all that but still show up at church wednesdays thinking that just showing up makes them right with God is unimaginable.

There are churches that preach from the pulpit that wearing shorts to service, having earrings, having a tattoo, wearing a hat in the church building, listening to rock/hip-hop (even if it's Christian), wearing sandals in a church building, and even trick-or-treating are all sins. There are people who believe that southern Gospel is the official music choice of Jesus Christ and if you don't listen or worship to that style then God simply doesn't want to listen. There are people here who believe that watching anything on TV but TBN is a sin.

There are people who believe that student ministry and teenagers are burdens on the church. They believe that any attempt to reach a younger generation should only be done if it involves yelling while preaching and southern gospel music. Any attempt to use modern music, discipleship, or mentoring to reach these young people is shot down and labeled too "liberal" or "emergent" for their church.

Then these same people wonder why the youth in the community are doing all of the stuff mentioned above. They wonder why their teen stops going to church or why the local high school and middle school are both filled with drug use and gang violence.

The few times I've spoken out and tried to change some of this I've been shot down. I've been told that Hazlehurst isn't worth changing. The teens here aren't worth saving. The community is dying and that's just how it is.

While I feel out of place and while I know to many people here I'm just another crazy yankee from a state that voted for Obama... I feel like my calling here isn't done. Progress is being made. Big things could happen in this town if people would get on board.

This isn't the 1960's. You can't just live in the past. Jesus used the popular method of communicating during his time (story telling) to change the world. The old southern gospel hymn's that are supposedly God's preferred style of music are really just old bar tunes that were re-worded back in the day to reach that generation of people.

This city needs to stop fearing change and start focusing on the future or the town will die. Not just because of the economic crisis but because of the spiritual crisis this town is in.

I will be praying for this town every day. I will continue to pray for the leaders, law enforcement, churches, and young people in this town.

Please pray for this town. Pray for the handful of people left here who see this vision and are spreading it around.

tons of exciting news from Shift Creative

First of all we got the deal with the church in savannah. this means that we will be purchasing and installing all of the audio, video, and lighting systems they need for their new church building. $180,000 was our quote... which was $1,000 less than the other company and we included about $25,000 in extra stuff that the other company didn't even think to add.

Second of all we got the promotion of Jake Damron up and running. We are currently helping him maintain a myspace for his music and we have some producers working to remix his songs for a better quality demo. If you want to add him on myspace go to myspace.com/jakedamronmusic and send him a request. we will be adding a cool design and some other stuff to it as soon as his fan base gets a bit higher and I have more time.

Third we were asked by a Christian ministry called Stand True to take part in the March for Live in DC in January. we will leave on Monday the 19, arrive in DC that night, attend Barack Obama's inauguration on Tuesday, and then attend the march from Wednesday through Saturday. We will be videotaping all aspects of the march/events and making a daily v-log recap for Stand True and making a final recap/documentary. Everything will be filmed in HD and we hope to make the final recap broadcast quality for someone like TBN or CBN to use.

Huge News

So there is some huge news I am able to share and there is even huger news that I gotta wait to share...

The news I can share is that Shift is launching a whole new wing of what we do: Sports/Event Photography! If you are a coach or parent or official involved in any sporting event anywhere in the country then you should read this. Shift Creative is now entering the sports/event photography business. We can do team pictures, pictures during a sporting event, and pictures at any other event. This will all be done at no cost to the team/host. Our pictures will be available online within one week for purchase by the participants or they will be available on a CD. Again we will do this at no cost to the team/host (unless travel is required then we just simply ask that the travel costs be reimbursed).

If your team/group/organization is interested in this new service let me know.

On January 1 Shift Ministries, Shift Creative, and myself will be releasing some huge news about the future of what we do.

Also on New Years Eve at Beavercreek Christian Church I will be speaking and sharing the full story of Zoe Simpson. This will be during the lock-in put on by the student ministries of the church. Besides me babbling there will be video games, movies, dodgeball, snacks, a band, and even more fun. Get in touch for details.

Excitement

Shift is about to enter an exciting/crazy phase. We are officially applying to be an LLC which will be cool. We have some other huge great news to share but we can't yet. I promise you that as soon as all the details are worked out and it's officially official I'll post it.

This past Monday Jim spoke at a church in Vidalia called the Edge. Our friend Brandon was the guest-worship-leader and they invited Jim to speak. He shared Zoe's story and it was my first time hearing the story in a while and the first time hearing it with Zoe right next to me. Then this past evening (Tuesday night) Carmen shared Zoe's story at an event in Hazlehurst and again Zoe was there which everyone thought was cool.

Some upcoming projects on our plate include 4 website designs, a few logo designs, a few church installs, and even a music video. When we were in Vidalia we met with Finding Favour, a recently-signed Christian/worship band, and they are keeping us in mind for a music video but that will be in addition to a video we are doing for a band in Hazlehurst. So that will all keep us busy plus on New Years Eve I'm sharing Zoe's story to the youth group at Beavercreek Christian Church and I still have to build/design all of the media I want to use for that and get all my thoughts together.

Wednesday Update

Things are insanely busy this week. I leave early next week to go back to Ohio and we have 300000000 things to finish up. We have a handful of churhes wanting installs done for video/audio/lighting stuff and thats awesome because we make decent money doing those but they take a lot of communication and work. We also have 5 video projects going on, a handful of website projects, a handful of graphic design projects, and some stuff I can't yet share on here.

I literally work until 3 or 4am every night on stuff and get up around 9 or 10 to begin a new day. I'm not complaining but I know for many of you that has meant little or no texting or calling when normally we talk frequently. Also recently I've battled a sore throat and a head ache so I've been trying to get as much rest as possible.

Here is my plan for the trip-

Sunday - drive to atlanta, meeting Jake and the Damron's at their church, watching Jake lead worship and getting food and talking with Jake and his family. Depending on how long this takes I might drive to Chattanooga or just spend the night in Atlanta. It'd be too late to try to drive all the way to Ohio (especially if the weather is bad).

Monday- drive the rest of the way to Ohio

Tuesday - last minute Christmas shopping

Wednesday - Christmas Eve service with my family and dinner with them

Thursday - Christmas with my family

Friday- working on my talk for the BCC lock-in

Saturday - Christmas in Cleveland with my Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins

Sunday- Church, hanging out with church people

Monday- working on my talk for the BCC lock-in

Tuesday- working on my talk for the BCC lock-in

Wednesday- lock in

Thursday- recovering from lock in, football

Friday- Drive back to Hazlehurst

So it'll be a busy trip. It will involve a few elements of work stuff, but I'll be great seeing family and friends and I'm excited to share the story of Zoe Simpson to the BCC youth!

A More In Depth Update

I have CNN on in the background as I work today and I just watched President Bush announce his bailout for the Auto Industry. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the $13.4 billion bailout.

I just read online that Apple has invested in the company that helped design the PSP for Sony so there is speculation that a new iPhone will be released with a lot more emphasis on gaming stuff. Also a new iMac should be announced at the next big event.

Anyways back to my life. Like I said last post it's been insanely busy. I've been working on a wedding video but they didn't just want a plain old typical wedding video. We made it like a documentary and added a lot of creative and artsy elements. It isn't just a recap of the events of the day but it's more like a story and when it's totally done it'll look sweet. It just takes a lot of editing work. Also today we are going to a local catholic church to shoot their Christmas service and make them a DVD.

When I get back from Christmas and New Years we will be planning some stuff for a prayer summit we have been asked to do media stuff for. That prayer summit is Monday the 19th so Jim will stay in town and help run that and I'll be on the road to DC. On Tuesday the 20th I'll be in DC to cover and tape Barack Obama's inauguration and all of the festivities. Then the next Wed-Saturday I'll be in DC to cover the march for life for Stand True Ministries. After that I'll head back to Georgia and we'll work on the purchase and installation stuff for a church near Chicago. I'm not sure when we'll drive up there but at some point we'll have to head up there to do the installation. We also will be helping a church in Xenia, Ohio with installation of a new sound system.

In April we will be heading down to sunny Miami, Florida for the Hillsong United conference.

I'm excited for the new year. On January 1 I really hope I'll be able to share a lot more about what other big things we have planned. Some of the stuff isn't final yet and some just can't be made public yet but once I know and once I'm able to share I will.

A Crazy-Butt Video Shoot

A few weeks ago we were approached by a hispanic family about doing some video work for them at the local catholic church. They told us nothing about the event but the date was Dec 19 so we just assumed it was a Christmas event.

So we showed up at the local Hazlehurst area catholic church at 3pm like our contract stated. We waited an hour. No one showed up. We had been trying to call our contact the whole hour and never reached them. So we called someone else who knew the family and they informed us that it had been moved to a different church about 15 minutes down the road.

So we drove and we ended up walking in about 15 minutes late. It turns out it wasn't a Christmas thing... it was a service and party to celebrate a girls 15th birthday. In the hispanic culture 15 is a more important birthday then 16 or even 21. It's the right-of-passage age so they throw huge parties. They had a huge meal, a live band, a DJ, a few hundred people, a huge cake, and some expensive presents... all to celebrate this girls 15th birthday.

It felt like I was on the crew for the Sweet 16 show on MTV. Literally tens of thousands of dollars were dropped on this party. We realized part of the way through the party that part of the reason for all the fancyness and expense was probably to help boost the self esteem of the girl because she always seemed sad and depressed even at the party.

So after 4 hours of crazy sweet live mexican music, some really good food, some crazy outfits, and some crazy dancing we called it a night and left. They were still dancing and drinking so I'm sure the party is going on now.... but it was a crazy night being thrown into another culture.... I'm glad it happened though.

The Most Christmasy Time Of The Year

I'm not sure if I ever shared this but I made it to Ohio.

I actually left a day earlier then my plans on here showed. I updated facebook and Twitter to show the changes but forgot to change this. So in the future for real time updates on stuff go to twitter.com/brianwashed. When I switch over to the new blog you'll see those twitter updates appear in real time on the brianwashed.org page but that won't happen until sometime Jan 1.

Anyways so I made it to Ohio. The first night I was home it got down to -30 degrees with the windchill. For those of you who are unaware of where I normally live that is 100 degrees colder than Hazlehurst, Georgia was the day I left there. I mean I miss my family and I miss my friends and I miss a lot of stuff about Ohio... but -30 makes me miss Georgia a whole lot!!!

Yesterday I went shopping and chilled with friends. Today I got some work stuff to do. Tomorrow I'll probably finish my shopping in true manly man spirit. And of course Thursday I'll spend Christmas with my family. Friday I'll chill and work. Saturday I go to Cleveland to see my extended family and to pick on my Uncle Gus. Sunday it's church in the morning and then I'm actually gonna spend some time on my new blog to get it ready to launch. Next Monday and Tuesday are work days. Editing videos and getting ready for my talk on Wed night at the New Years Party. Wednesday I'm sleeping during most of the day and at night of course I'll be at a 12 hour lock-in. On Thursday I'll watch football and rest up. And on Friday I head back to Hazlehurst where it won't be -30 degrees.

So it's kind of busy but kind of not. Busy will come though. January 16-23 might be the busiest week of my life so I'll spend the first 2 weeks I'm back getting ready for that. We are doing a prayer conference in tifton, georgia that weekend, then driving overnight to DC for Obama's inauguration, then covering the March for Life for Stand True, and then we'll drive back that next weekend.

As far as I know January 1 I will know more and be able to announce the crazy sweet news that up to this point I haven't been able to confirm or announce. It deals with Shift Ministries, Shift Creative, and my life. I'm excited for it if we can confirm it. It definitely is good news if it happens.

The King Still Has One More Move

So this is a story I heard in 2005 at a Christian Conference in Pittsburgh, it sums up the hope I have for this world and my life.

I was at an art gallery with my friends, perusing the paintings and just walking through, pretending to have a greater appreciation for art than I actually held. My friend got stuck on one of the paintings, a piece titled "Checkmate" that depicted a chess game at (you guessed it) checkmate. He stood there for over an hour, while I walked through the whole gallery and back. I stood there with him for a few moments, quickly became bored again, and began to walk away for my second circuit of the room. However, as I did, he shouted, "The king still has ONE MORE MOVE!"

Why would the artist paint this scene incorrectly? There are millions of finished chess games in the world, millions of scenarios that would have allowed for a correct label to the scene. However, the artist decided to say that, contrary to all appearances of checkmate, the king still had one more move.

Isn't this something like life? As Christians surrounded by a hopeless looking world, it often feels as though we're pawns in a losing game of chess. As though we're fighting when the game is already finished, when the King has been defeated, and Satan has won. As though nothing we do will stop the fact that the King has left this world, and God is absent from all the misery and pain felt by people here. However, as in the painting, the KING STILL HAS ONE MORE MOVE. See, Jesus died, and that should have been the end. A miracle happened, and he rose, but then he left this world. Shouldn't that have been the end? Hell has been given free reign over this earth, just look around. There are earthquakes, shootings, pickpockets, failing grades, corrupt politicians, gossip, bad parents, suicide, tornadoes, depression, guilt, failed relationships, child molestors, eating disorders, AIDS, orphans, starvation. However...

The King still has ONE more move.

Look again. See love, sports, joy, Christmas, presents, swingsets, preschoolers, grandparents, friends, family, college, art, music, Apple Computers, cuddling, bonfires, beaches, sunsets, laughter, HOPE. The King is here, and he is playing. And one day he will end Hell's temporary reign.

No more pain. No more death. No more mourning. No more tears? How amazing. He will wipe every tear from their eyes.

The year 2008 I gave my life and blog and writings a theme of "One Hope". I wanted to share a message of hope with as many people as possible.

I'll announce my theme for 2009 shortly. But in these last few days of 2008 let's share a messaage of hope to this dark and dying world.

Wednesday through Saturday I'll be in Washington DC doing media work for the March for Life.
