To wear the veil or not to wear the veil. That is sometimes the question… although lately I feel like it’s just not. What a shame that is too, because Genia looks stunning in her birdcage veil. I think the soft look of her veil is so perfect and the fact that it doesn’t cover her entire face is subtle and a little different… ahhh it is just beautiful, simple and elegant all at the same time! Love.

Marriage is about love. Of course you love him (!), but on that special day, I hope that you are celebrating the love of each other’s family, friends, and all that come with it.

I was fortunate to marry my guy, not once, but twice in one day! In the morning we had a traditional Vietnamese ceremony, and in the afternoon we had a lovely garden ceremony. I look back on that day with the utmost love and admiration.

Now I hope this isn’t looking too vain…I am going somewhere with this! Besides, I just reread Courtney’s post from last week and thought it might be nice to share as well.

I don’t get cross cultural custom brides very often, so you can see why I have a certain fondness for them. Rebecca emailed me from the UK wanting a custom bracelet ring (hath panja) for her traditional Indian wedding ceremony. She is English, her groom is Indian. She was hoping for something traditional, but with more of vintage, grecian feel.

I hope Rebecca is prepared to be adorned like a princess- I can’t wait to see pictures of her beautiful wedding!!

A little something new to something tried and true!

These little darlings are our Chelsea hairpins with some added touches. Some silver and ivory freshwater coin pearls here, some ivory ostrich feather there, and throw in some delicate grey coque feathers for good measure.

Our bride Nicole will be wearing this Paloma Blanca dress, along with grey/silver pearl and rhinestone jewelry set in a gunmetal silver finish. I think these hairpins will be a perfect fit!

Channeling the Gods

What better visual icon to imagine yourself being on your wedding day than that of the goddess of love ang beauty? Aphrodite, or as the Romans like to call her, Venus. Botticelli’s famous “The Birth of Venus” was meant at the time to elicit a feeling of divine love, just by looking at it.

Would you say the same is true for Milla Jovovich? I’d think a lot of people would agree, Milla is gorgeous, especially as a bride!

The last few weeks, I have been working with Gaile as she channels the gods by way of Hollywood. She will be wearing a vintage lace gown. We had been playing around with a few leaf options, but in the end decided on smaller, antique gold finished leaves. I think the finish is just perfect for a vintage look, and the smaller leaves complimentary to a delicate lace dress.

She could wear it as a headband, or even on top, like a halo.

I am soooo excited that Gaile is soooo excited! She is going to look like a goddess and I sure hope she feels like one on her big day!

So, one of the reasons we ask for your wedding date when you place an order, aside from making sure we get it to you in time, is so that we can follow up with you afterwards. I think the one thing we love more than making jewelry is seeing it being worn on one of the most special and beautiful days of your life! Earlier this month one of our custom brides, Kristine, was married wearing this gorgeous custom comb that Hoang made for her:

I got my first suggestion request for one of the new Limited wedding dresses, the style is called Romantic. Here it is:

I thought of the bouncing off clouds comb right away because it has the same youthful and fun vibe as the dress. I wanted to draw attention up towards the face and make the look more bridal, so I went with the subtle yet sparkly elke earrings and the ferida necklace. I think it’s an overall balanced look that captures the spirit of the dress, and with all three pieces costing $200 total, you’re not breaking the bank either.

Behind the Scenes: A Modern Look at Necklaces

This week at Tigerlilly, we decided to go a little edgy! We wanted to focus on necklaces, especially some of the real statement pieces: chunky pendants, strands upon strands of pearls and crystals, and bold vintage inspired sparklers:

When you choose a dramatic accessory, you don’t want to crowd it with a lot of other details. At the same time, if the rest of your look is too neutral, a big sparkly piece of jewelry will look out of place. This need for balance steered me in the direction of a more modern, high fashion look. The heavy, silver, smoky eye served as a counter balance to the visually weighty jewelry. The light, but slightly unnatural shade of pink lipstick doesn’t compete for attention, but still feels glamorous enough to fit in with the rest of the look. The hair is quite messy and unpolished, but a style like that is often more challenging to pull off than a fancy updo. It has to look deliberate without looking belabored–and it has to be flattering with out being “pretty”. It also helped that we had a model who really knew how to work this look (the gorgeous and talented Kelly Falk).

This look was a departure from the more classic styling we’ve tended to feature, but I found it to be versatile enough to work with simpler, more delicate pieces as well:

The styling for this week’s photo shoot (and last week’s Frida Kahlo inspired shoot) is obviously geared to be more artsy than what most brides are going for, but I always like to imagine the real weddings that the looks we create could go with. I love to see weddings where the couple is pushing the boundaries of what we expect weddings to look like. I think the brides that look the most fashionable are the ones who aren’t afraid to take a risk!

Behind the Scenes: Frida Kahlo Meets the Reverie Collection

Our latest photo shoot was inspired by none other than the late, great Frida Kahlo:

She has many claims to fame: her art, her activism, her tumultuous marriage and personal life, and of course, her eyebrows (eyebrow?). However, I think her iconic look cannot be boiled down to this feature alone. Here is a woman who clearly put effort into her personal appearance–and who seemed to enjoy the more feminine elements of style: lush flowers, red lipstick, flashy jewelry–but is unconcerned with whether or not her own personal quirks fit in with conventional ideas of beauty. I think you’d be hard pressed to find any woman who could sport a moustache and still be as glamourous, confident, and alluring.

We chose not to include Frida’s famous facial hair in the styling of our model, Nina Stoddard. Honestly, the hair and makeup were quite simple and straight forward for this shoot. The combination of the floral headbands and chandelier earrings along with a bold red lip and Nina’s raven haired good looks went a long way in channeling the vibe of Ms. Kahlo. We did a lot of straightforward, somber faced shots to keep the vintage photography vibe. I also love how the dark red backdrop worked with this look.

I loved approaching the Reverie collection in such a totally different way from our last photo shoot. These are amazingly versatile pieces. They can come across as very romantic and girly or they can be very bold and sensual. I love getting to see these pieces on a variety of models because they really bring out something different in each girl, and they have looked terrific on everyone. I can’t wait to see what other looks these pieces will help create!

as you know, one of the things we love to do is customize our handmade jewelry to the bride’s specifications–after all, we want her special day to be absolutely perfect. hoang, our skilled custom jewelry artist, is constantly turning out beautiful pieces and we wanted to share this one with y'all!

the bride, stefanie fichera, chose this lovely flowing wedding dress as her gown:

My dress and setting are very ethereal and whimsical - the dress is a bit Grecian and a bit 1920’s and the setting is a Japanese Garden. I’m using anemones as my main flowers and would love a headband that had blossoms that looked similar to that. I’m hoping that the headband could help me pull more of the dresses 20’s vibe and less of the Grecian. I would love to incorporate pearls as I am wearing a pearl necklace passed down to me from my great-grandmother. Crystals and silver would be great too - don’t want to have all pearls…

Hi Tigerlilly fans! My name is Laura and I am the stylist and photographer for Tigerlilly’s weekly photo shoots! This is the first in a series of posts where I will give some background on our photo sessions and talk about our inspiration for each week’s look.

Many weeks our plan for the photo shoot comes directly from the type of pieces we want to cover. This particular week we had a big, sparkly pile of tiaras accumulating in the studio, so we decided to start there. To me, the tiara is second only to the veil as the most classic bridal head piece. It strongly evokes the princess aesthetic that so many brides aspire to achieve. When I think of the tiara wearing bride, I think of someone romantic, elegant, and poised–-and I think of someone for whom the history and tradition of weddings is meaningful. When we decided to use a blonde model for this session (the lovely Lacy Allen), my mind quickly went to the elegant blondes of the mid 20th century–Grace Kelly, Doris Day, Kim Novak…

I definitely felt that a rather dramatic updo would be called for. It’s in keeping with the mid-century vibe, and also very classic and regal. Additionally, many tiaras require a strong, structural hairstyle for visual balance and stability. The makeup look needed to be polished enough to match the formal hairstyle, but understated to keep the look modern and not too beauty pageant-esque. Taking another cue from my mid century muses, I went with a neutral eye shadow and bold cat’s-eye liner. The result:

I think this look really suited Lacy, and once we had the hair, makeup and jewelry in place, I was reminded of another mid century (in a sense) beauty:
