The very first bridges, were of course made by nature, as you could imagine. A fallen tree would be used as a log across a stream, and so on.

Thus wooden bridges were presumably the earliest form, however it’s probable stone bridges were introduced at some point not long after.

It is known that some early Americans used bamboo poles in order to cross small caverns or wells. This developed into a form of lashing sticks, logs and branches together, assembling architectural geniuses for the time.

Then came the Romans – and by then I mean some thousand years later. These historical giants, were the best known bridge builders of the ancient age. Whilst earlier designs such as those of the Greek Bronze Age were, although strong, susceptible to being ruined in harsh conditions; Roman bridges were simply solid. They were the first large and lasting bridges to be built.

The Romans were in fact the first to use concrete for their bridges, and there genius is such that some of these masterpieces are still standing today.

Hureai Bridge, near Kyoto, Japan

This circular pedestrian bridge is part of a spa complex. It was designed by the architect Norihiko Dan, who also designed the spa and the surrounding parkland area. It also known as the ‘friendship bridge’ and was built in 1998. Norihiko Dan is regarded as having revolutionised Japanese architecture and is also an environmental  activist. This love of complementing natural landscape with built architecture can be seen in all of his work.

Rolling Bridge, Grand Union Canal, London

Built to let canal boats pass, the rolling bridge unfurls every day at noon. Designed at the studios of architect Thomas Heatherwick, the bridge is famous for its unique curling action. Heatherwick built the bridge with a focus on it’s function rather than it’s outward appearance and liked the idea that “the two furthest parts of the bridge would end up kissing”.

Langkawi Sky Bridge, Malaysia

Built on the island of Pulau in the Langkawi Archipelago , this cross between a bridge and an observation deck affords fantastic views of the Andaman Sea.  It stands 700 metres above sea level and the curved design enables you to see not only from starting point to starting point, but fantastic views from every angle. Probably one of the most beautiful bridges in the world.

The Full Moon Party

This all-night beach party takes place on the island of Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand on the night of every full moon. La Tomatina

It involves pelting other festival goers with tomatoes which have been crushed first to avoid anyone getting injured, although many participants still wear goggles and other protective gear. The throwing, which is accompanied by singing and dancing, lasts an hour and the pelters normally get through around a hundred and fifty thousand tomatoes.

Battle of the Oranges

A similar event to La Tomatina is held every year in the small town of Ivrea in Piedmont, northwest Italy. Rather than pelting each other with tomatoes, the participants are split up into teams with colorful names like the Devils and Black Panthers who then attack their opponents with oranges.
