Bridge Builders conducted the first outreach in more than 20 years at the old Bojangles Theater in Church Hill. Located at the intersection 29th & Q Streets, this facility is being remodeled by a group of Christian leaders as a community arts center. This facility was the center of black culture in the Church Hill area during the 1930s.

Plans call for a facility that will once again inspire and provide the community with a space to develop talents and local culture. Mitch Bennett said this outreach exceeded his expectations and made history by signaling the good times ahead for the community.

Hundreds of people gathered in the parking lot, which had not been used for a community event since the 1980s. A few people made a profession of faith in Christ while hundreds received free food and entertainment. The BB team did a great job during a very hot day. Our team also partnered with the ROC and Pastor Otis Smith.

The new arts center is scheduled to open next year.

Outreaches are going well. Please continue to pray for divine appointments, safety and direction as we minister on the streets of Washington DC, Richmond and Petersburg. On Wednesday, we have a big outreach planned in the Church Hill area.

Team Intercession and Commissioning Service

The BB core leadership team and pastors prayed for the students and adults as we prepared for our first full day of outreaches. Team members walked through a wall of supportive prayer. This has become an important tradition that showcases the supportive atmosphere that BB provides.

Outreach Begins

Two family teams went to Moseby Court to conduct an outreach with the ROC. More than 100 people made a commitment to follow Christ at the outreach. Our team interacted with the crowd, performed, gave out snow cones and ice cream, did face painting, witnessed, etc. It was a great outreach. Last night, Pastor Pete's family group handed out food to the homeless in Monroe Park. We gave out all the sandwiches and had a chance to pray with people in the park.

Also, the Klug family group went to the Tappahannock golf cart church and conducted the service. This was a first for BB as we did the entire church service. Then, the Klug group went to the river for some fun.

Deep Students Encountering God

The students this year have been more introspective than I remember in the past. Many of them are really digging into the Scriptures and writing in their journals. They are deep in their faith and are seeking to hear from God. They have been challenged to develop teaching plans and activities for various VBS outreaches.

Prayer update: Outreaches start Sunday with groups going to the ROC as well as Tappahannock. A few of the students are not feeling well. One of the young adults has a sprained knee.

Praise reports: Friday night was a real breakthrough time for many of the students and adults on the team. A number of students were baptized in the Holy Spirit. Team members experienced God moving in their hearts to reconcile damaged relationships with family and/or friends. The Holy Spirit gave a number of the students powerful words or images. Be sure to ask those you love on the team what God has showed them through their BB experience.

Everything is Worship

The team is learning how to worship God in all we do from songs to dance to just how we interact with each other.

BB Family Groups Getting to Know Each Other

The students and leaders in the family groups are getting to know each other as boot camp is in full swing. There are many new faces and some familiar ones too. Here are some pictures of family group in action. I will post more images as family groups get them to me.

Lights Out!

BB dealt with its first little challenge of 2008 when the power went out last night. Eventually, all the power was restored. But this proved to be a distraction for the team although the kids seemed to respond to the challenge. The power came back on in part of the building just in time for worship. The power returned in the rest of the building later in the night.

The teens used the lights out opportunity to play a game of hide & seek in the dark. Please pray that the team will come together and really focus on the Lord during worship times as well as ministry preparation times. A number of the adult leaders are dealing with distractions that are making this year more challenging than most. But we are believing that the Lord wants to do incredible things in and through everyone this year. Key prayer concerns: Focus on Jesus, Unity for the Team and Continued Safety.

Moving In

The team moved into the church yesterday. Everyone got a chance to get to know each other better around our first family group meal. We also discussed the home qualifying book.

Please keep us in your prayers because we know the Lord has great things in store for the team this year. Of course, there will be challenges too.
