The Golden Opportunity is a "micro-activism" site that gives winning ideas $250 to spend however they'd like as well as a little flip camera to video the results. It's a "pay it forward" idea, and we'd love to be able to pay it forward for our amazing kids!

Katie, one of the most thoughtful people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, organized a bake sale to raise money for BBB. She and three classmates got together on their own time and raised over $150 for our little organization. I know that I speak for everybody when I send them our infinite gratitude. We couldn't keep our group going without the wonderful support we've received from the community!!!

New Mentor Orientation

Mentor Application Deadline Approaching - Applications Pouring In!

We are officially into August, which means that mentor applications are due less than three weeks! If you are interested in applying but haven't looked at the application yet, you can find it right here. Although applications are not due until August 20, it never hurts to get them turned in early!

Our listing on idealist.org has generated a very good response, and we have already received nearly ten applications, with weeks left yet, so don't waste any time getting your applications turned in!

The lovely Danni of the blog oh, hello friend was generous enough to sponsor a refugee! Her $50 donation will help purchase school supplies and cover event costs for our refugee students. We appreciate her generosity more than we can even say, and I hope that more kind people will come forward to donate before the program kicks off!

That's right - you can now find our mentoring program on idealist.org, the popular place for community organizations and community-oriented citizens to come together. Bridges is now officially an idealist.org organization, and the mentoring program has been put out on the WWW as a volunteer opportunity. Keep your fingers crossed that some great University of Kentucky students stumble upon this and want to get involved!

In Fall 2010 Bridges Beyond Borders will partner with the Morton Middle School for our first group of mentors and students. We are very excited about this partnership and look forward to teaming up with the Morton Mustangs for a great first year!

Summer 2010 Timeline for Mentor Applicants

This is a tentative timeline for mentor applicants beginning in May and running through September. All dates are subject to change, and updates can be found on this website as they are made.

Develop program information and documentation

o Mentor application

o Mentor contract

o Program informational handout

o Recruitment materials

§ Approach various targeted campus departments to recruit mentors

Disseminate application materials to potential mentors via targeted campus departments
Make application available on website

Asses response from potential mentors mid-month and adjust recruitment strategies accordingly
Send out second round of application packets

August 20 – Mentor applications due
August 24 – Notify mentors selected for interviews
August 28 – Mentor interviews
August 31 – Mentors selected and Meet with new mentor team

September 1 – Opening event/party with mentors, refugees, and their families
September 5 – Orientation meeting at 6:00 in Student Center
Week of September 10 – Mentors begin meeting with refugees weekly

Bridges is Official!

As of April 30, Bridges Beyond Borders is officially a registered student organization at the University of Kentucky. Everything is on track for Bridges to kick off the mentoring program at the beginning of Fall 2010!

Progress Update - Clinton Global Initiative University

We have an exciting update! Bridges Beyond Borders was accepted as a 'Commitment to Action' for the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative University conference from April 16-18 at the University of Miami. The conference will help us to network with other young leaders and to build valuable skills that will make us more of an asset to our fledgling organization.

The CGIU site explains it:

CGI U is more than just an event. It is a growing community of young leaders who don't just discuss the world's challenges -- they take real, concrete steps toward solving them. Throughout the year, and as a prerequisite of attending the CGI U meeting, students, youth directors, and university officials develop their own Commitments to Action: a specific plan of action that addresses a pressing challenge on their campus, in their community, or in a different part of the world.
