Ethiopia, big coffee produce and coffee lovers

Ethiopia, widely regarded as the cradle of coffee, is a nation devoted to the stimulating beverage. The country is Africa's biggest producer and ranks fifth globally. Last year it exported 190,000 tonnes of coffee beans, earning around $700 million, and in 2016 Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa will host the 4th World Coffee Conference, a high-level gathering of global experts.

Coffee connoisseurs

Far from being just coffee exporters, Ethiopians are also major coffee lovers. Cafes densely line the streets of the capital Addis Ababa, and in 2013/14 3.6 million bags were consumed in the country, representing 71.6% of the total domestic consumption of Africa and 8% of all exporting countries.

TO.MO.CA, with six branches in Ethiopia's capital, is one of the most recognizable cafe brands. It has been owned by three generations of the same family for over 60 years, and now the company is opening its first international outpost in Tokyo, Japan, this May.

"Ethiopians are coffee drinkers with a history of drinking and enjoying coffee for over 1,000 years," says Wondwossen Meshesha, the 28-year-old grandson of TO.MO.CA's founder and the company's current chief operations officer.

"Here, it's not just about getting a coffee on your way to work," he continues. "Ethiopians socialize and meet their business partners in coffee shops."

Meshesha says that only 20% of the coffee in the country is commercially farmed, with the rest coming from small holder farmers, who harvest coffee mainly in forest. "The specialty of Ethiopian coffee comes from the emphasis of consistency in production of quality coffee rather than volume of coffee production," the young businessman adds.

More than caffeine

In Ethiopia, consuming coffee has traditionally been a ceremonial affair with a deep, spiritual meaning, conducted at home. The beans are roasted in an open pan so that their rich aroma draws family, neighbors and other guests to gather.

After they are ground with a mortar and pestle, the coffee is brewed in a jug and poured into small cups from a height, with an up-and-down motion. Cups are filled to the brim, representing a wish for "fullness of life" for the guest, and there are three servings, the last of which is called baraka, or blessing.

"[The] traditional coffee ceremony is very sacred to the Ethiopian culture. It's not just about the drinking of coffee but it's a spiritual ceremony. Both Christians and Muslim practice it, and its purpose is spirituality, and family and social gathering," says Meshesha.

He feels certain that, in spite of the increasingly fast pace of life, the coffee ceremony won't die out because of the special status it enjoys in Ethiopian culture. However Meshesha adds that his company, and other coffee shops which have sprouted across Ethiopia's cities in recent years, try to present traditional coffee drinking in a modern way.

Away from abundant local consumption, the government is trying to promote Ethiopian coffee as a premium product abroad, and increase exports from 190,837 metric tonnes in 2013/14, to 200,000 which would generate $1 billion in revenue.

"We have 5,000 varieties of coffee in Ethiopia," says Meshesha. "It has huge potential."

Banned coffee pods, city of Hamburg

The German city of Hamburg has banned coffee pods from government-run buildings. In an attempt to become more environmentally friendly, the city said it will no longer spend taxpayer money on products that don't meet its high sustainability standards.

Coffee capsules, like those sold by the Nestle (NSRGY), Keurig (GMCR) and other brands, are specifically mentioned in the city's new guidelines, because they create unnecessary waste and contain aluminum. A spokesman for the city said the pods contain 3 grams of waste for every 6 grams of coffee.

But the list of prohibited items goes far beyond coffee. It includes plastic cutlery and plates, water, beer, and soft drinks in disposable packaging, as well as certain cleaning products and even wall paints.

"The city can help ensure that environmentally harmful products are purchased less frequently and that sustainable products achieve even greater acceptance in the market. Our objective is to increase the share of environmentally friendly products significantly in order to help combat climate change," said Hamburg senator Jens Kerstan

Capsule coffee machines have become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to the convenience they offer. Euromonitor said pods have seen "colossal growth" and remain the major growth driver in the U.S. coffee market.

The National Coffee Association estimates more than quarter of U.S. households now own pod coffee makers.

But critics of the capsule coffee trend point out the pods are extremely difficult to recycle. They combine different materials, including plastic and aluminum, which can't be easily split from each other. Separating materials is crucial in the recycling process.

Some of the most popular brands behind coffee pods -- Keurig in the U.S. and Nespresso in Europe -- offer recycling options that include pick-up and drop-off service for used pods, but they don't release figures about the amount of pods that end up in landfills.

They also offer recyclable varieties of their pods, provided users are willing to do their part and separate the metal portion of the pods from the rest before recycling.

Keurig has promised to make all K-Cups recyclable, but only by 2020. "It's a very complex challenge ... the pods must keep coffee fresh before brewing, withstand the heat and pressure during brewing, and be easily punctured with a needle as part of the brewing process," the company said on its website.

Drinking coffee may help prevent cirrhosis

Upping your coffee intake may help reduce your chances of developing alcohol-related cirrhosis, according to a review done by the journal Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics of multiple existing studies.

Drinking just two more cups of coffee every day may lower the risk of developing the liver condition by 44%, according to researchers who analyzed nine studies that examined the relationship between coffee consumption and the risk of cirrhosis.

More than 430,000 participants were a part of the nine studies. The duration of these studies varied, but the longest one lasted about 20 years. In eight of the nine studies examined, researchers found increasing coffee consumption by two cups per day was "associated with a statistically significant reduction in the risk of cirrhosis." The review, published January 25, is the first meta-analysis to show the potential protective properties of coffee.

Dr. Oliver Kennedy, who conducted the research as part of a team at Southampton University in the United Kingdom, told CNN the team combined the data of these existing studies to calculate a more precise relationship between coffee and the risk of cirrhosis.

They found that the risk of cirrhosis was lower at higher levels of coffee consumption. "For example, compared to no coffee, 1 cup per day was associated with a 22% lower risk of cirrhosis and 4 cups per day was associated with a 65% lower risk. However, there may be an upper limit beyond which there is no further benefit," Kennedy said.

But while coffee may reduce the risk of cirrhosis, it will not fully counteract the harmful effects of excess alcohol consumption, Kennedy added.

Cirrhosis is a condition that deteriorates the liver, replacing healthy tissue with scar tissue that blocks blood flow. Common causes for the liver disorder are chronic hepatitis infections, excessive alcohol consumption, immune diseases, obesity and diabetes. And the damaging condition can be fatal, according to the National Institution of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

However, Dr. Hillel Tobias, a liver specialist and chairman of the American Liver Foundation's National Medical Advisory Committee, says the possible preventative effects of coffee are not new. A 2015 reported cited a potential link between coffee's health benefits and cirrhosis preventions.

"The problem is that most professionals in the liver community find this hard to accept," Tobias told CNN. "The physiological and biochemical basis has not been established and some experimental evidence is needed. Right now, many of these studies are based on historical information provided by patients."

Tobias said the possibility of patient subjectivity and statistical errors makes him leery of such studies claiming to have a simple fix for cirrhosis.

It should also be noted that some of the studies that were reviewed did not account for other risk factors for cirrhosis like obesity and diabetes, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics says in its report.

The findings mean more research is needed, Kennedy said. "We now need to conduct proper clinical trials, similar to those necessary for authorization of a new pharmaceutical product, so that doctors and health policy makers can make specific recommendations, he said.

It's important to also keep in mind that the amount of alcohol-related liver damage varies from person to person, Tobias explained. For example, women can't metabolize alcohol as quickly as men. Maintaining healthy eating and drinking habits is a good way to prevent some cases of cirrhosis, according to Tobias.

In the United States, alcoholism is the second-most common cause of cirrhosis. Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to fat accumulation and inflammation of the liver, according to NIDDK.

It's recommended that moderate drinking for men is two drinks per day and one drink per day for women, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

14 more possible cases of sexually transmitted Zika virus

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is investigating 14 new reports of possible sexual transmission of the Zika virus.

The CDC said several of these cases are among pregnant women, although it did not specify how many.

"These new reports suggest sexual transmission may be a more likely means of transmission for Zika virus than previously considered," the CDC said in a written statement.

First known sexual transmission of Zika in U.S. was '08

Two of the cases are in women whose only known risk is sexual contact with a male partner exhibiting symptoms of the virus after returning from an infected area, according to the CDC.

Lab results are pending for four additional suspected cases among women. There are eight other suspected cases under investigation.

The CDC is working with state health officials to investigate all of these cases. Officials have not said which states they are working with or where these women live because the risk applies to all women in the United States, according to Dr. Jennifer McQuiston, deputy incident manager for Zika virus at the CDC.

"We have been a little surprised by the number of suspected cases we've received," she told CNN.

The CDC is urging individuals to follow its previously issued guidance of abstinence or condom use for women, especially those who are pregnant, whose male sexual partners have traveled to a Zika-infected area. It also issued a notice through their Health Alert Network that notified health care providers, labs and local, state and federal public health employees about urgent public health information.

The recommendations single out partners of pregnant women because the virus has been linked to the neurological birth defect microcephaly. Infants with the disorder have unusually small heads and sometimes developmental delays that vary in severity.

The CDC restated there is no evidence that women can transmit the virus to their sexual partners and that the most likely way to become infected with the Zika virus is from infected mosquitoes.

In February, the CDC confirmed the virus had been transmitted to the sexual partner of an individual in Texas who had traveled to a Zika infected area -- a first for this outbreak but not a first in and of itself. The first known case of sexual transmission of the Zika virus was occurred in 2008, when a microbiologist from Colorado State University returned from Senegal, reunited with his wife and infected her with the virus.

"The report of the case in Dallas raised concern so doctors are beginning to think about it when they see patients," McQuiston said, adding that another possible reason for the increase in these possible cases could be reflective of the travel patterns and people returning from infected areas.

Coffee drinking is more universal than Americans realize. What countries drink the most coffee?

Norway has the highest consumption of coffee at 10.7 kgs per person compared to the meager 3kgs per person consumed in the United States. That's an average of 4 cups per day. Half of Norwegian consumption takes place at home, the balance is consumed at coffee shops, cafes and restaurants.

Norway is followed by Finland with 10.1kgs and Denmark with 9.7kgs. Norwegians have been encouraged to drink coffee by the abundance of coffee bars. The number of coffee shops has multiplied significantly in the last few years. The American favorite, Starbucks hasn't made its debut in Norway yet, but there are plenty of coffee bars owned and operated by varying companies. With only 4.5 million people in Norway, they import 41 tons of coffee to Norway annually.

Perhaps the reason they drink so much coffee is because of Norwegian social habits. Norway has cold winters, yet another reason they may be drawn to a cup of hot java. At dinner parties, it is common for guests to go to another room after dinner and drink coffee with cake and casual socializing often consists of meeting for cake and coffee.

America's consumption of coffee doesn't compare to Norway's consumption. At only 3kgs per person, that equals 1.6 cups of coffee per person per day. Serious coffee drinkers average 3.1 cups of coffee per day. Fifty percent of the U.S. population consumes some kind of coffee drink, espresso, cappuccino, latte and iced coffee. Americans drink coffee all day long with sixty-five percent drinking it during the breakfast hours, thirty percent are drinking coffee between meals and five percent are drinking it with other meals.

American consumption is far behind that of Finland and Denmark which follow Norway in top consumption. The Finns drink coffee socially because its available at every gathering, including weddings, funerals, work meetings and parties. During World War II it was scarce and afterward the war it seemed to have gained luxury status. In fact at every Finnish history museum coffee-burners are displayed.

In fact it not just Norway and Denmark, its all of the Scandinavian countries that lead the way in coffee consumption. Coffee's caffeine may be a needed stimulant for a population which is in the dark for half the year. Denmark is like Norway with an abundance of coffee bars making coffee very convenient.. And Starbucks is in Denmark. It has several shops in the capital city of Copenhagen.

Coffee drinking serves a purpose socially and gives many people a kick-start in the morning with a caffeine jolt. The dedicated drinkers of hot java live primarily in cold countries, which seems reasonable.

We naturally crave warmth when it's cold outside. Americans drink coffee and if not for the reminder that we drink 3kgs per person while Norwegians drink 10.7 kgs per person, we would probably believe we drink too much.
