Shelter in Place Household Chores for Kids

Ugh! Do we have to? Is probably the response you get when instructing your children with the message that they need to do some chores around the house.

Though that will probably be their response, once they get working, they might enjoy the work. (I am using the word “enjoy” loosely!) If you children have not been doing chores, there is no better time than right now, in our shelter in place status.

While your son or daughter was at school, he/she was expected to keep his/his personal area neat and tidy. The teacher had set times for various activities. Your child knew that at 9:00 am they did ____ and at 10:00 came______ lunch would follow after______ and recess would be _____time. The point being; your child had a very scheduled daily routine.

Granted, at home you cannot have the same rigidity that your child had at school, however, having a daily structure: morning/afternoon/evening WILL go a long way toward giving your child a sense of security while helping to keep your sanity.

A bonus for you: a structured day cuts down on childhood boredom which in turn leads toward sibling fighting.

One Simple Step to Gain 20/20 Vision for 2020

I love the irony in the year 2020. It invokes a desire for vision and clarity, don’t you think? 20/20 vision (in the U.S.) is not perfection but the standard of measurement for vision clarity. Many of us, however, don’t seem to have 20/20 vision without the help of aids such as: glasses, contact lenses or corrective eye surgery.

If our eyes need help getting to the mark of 20/20 vision clarity; then perhaps our businesses need some help as well.

Could you use more time/focus/energy for your green business to gain 2020 vision? Your starting point may be as simple as the quick fix your electronic devices need from time to time.

How many times in the past year have you had to unplug your router? How many times have you had to power down, and unplug your computer then restart it? Computers, routers and cell phones run on an operating system that sometimes crashes. Why do they crash? For various reasons; a virus, too many tabs running, overheating, or other reasons.

Why are we told to actually unplug the device and wait for 10 or 30 seconds before plugging it back in? Is there magic behind counting for a few seconds? Well, it’s not magic, but scientific. There are tiny batteries called capacitors inside the device that hold power for a few seconds after the electronic device has been turned off! These few extra seconds of “life” allow some tabs to shut down. Therefore, unplugging your computer, router, or cellphone and waiting a few seconds longer before plugging the unit in allows for the capacitors to also shut down.

With a system completely shut down, it can have some time to cool down, if it was overheating. The device can have time to reboot from all the pages and tabs that were open and running which may have caused it to crash.

Why am I going it to some length to explain the reason behind unplugging your electronic devices?

Because in ways we are similar to our computers.

We can have “too many tabs open” causing us to “crash.” We can catch viruses that slow us to a crawl.

You and I need to be unplugged too.

Chances are 100% that you will need more than 30 seconds before you can reboot. Would at least 30 minutes a day to the trick? Perhaps you need more time. Maybe one day a week or one afternoon/evening per week is needed for you to reboot.

An unplugged life resets:

Focus.

Vision.

Attention.

Purpose.

Energy.

Peace.

Harmony.

Gratitude.

Thoughtfulness.

Love.

A personal story from Brenda:

Green Clean: Descale faucets throughout the house. For shower heads: pour Brightly Green Daily Shower (in concentrate form) in a plastic baggie and place bag around the shower head. Secure with strong tape such as duct tape. Leave on the shower head for a couple of hours. Remove baggie and wipe shower head clean. Kitchen and bathroom faucet areas can be descaled by pouring Brightly Green Daily Shower Cleaner on rags that have been placed around faucets. This will remove any buildup around the faucets. If you want to descale the kitchen and bathroom faucet heads themselves; do the same process as you do for the shower heads.

De-Clutter: Organize and put away school papers and supplies. Give the garage a thorough sorting. Get rid of unused and unwanted sporting equipment, etc.

Home Maintenance: Revive your deck with a good power washing. Repair/replace any damaged boards and re-stain.

JULY.

Green Clean: Spruce up your lawn furniture by wiping it clean with Brightly Green All-Natural household cleaning products. For plastic furniture clean with Brightly Green Multi-Purpose Cleaner. Wood furniture can be cleaned with Brightly Green Wood Floor Cleaner (spray on a clean rag and wipe furniture).

After the holidays is the perfect time to hit “reset” on maintaining a clean and tidy living environment.

Too often we create grandiose New Year’s Resolutions that merely become a To-Do List for the first two weeks of the New Year. Additionally, studies have shown that less than 25% of people actually stay committed to their resolutions that first month. Sad statistics that are not very promising, don’t you agree?

Rather than creating New Year’s Resolutions, decide on ONE HABIT you are going to do that will help you maintain a green clean and tidy home in 2020!

What is ONE HABIT you would love to say, at the end of 2020, that you were glad became a part of your green clean lifestyle?

So…how do you narrow it down to only ONE HABIT to change this New Year?

Decide what is that ONE TASK you want to accomplish weekly in your home, but most often does not get done.

Is it the kitchen? Are those dirty dishes ALWAYS on display? Perhaps your bedroom has become the go to place to hide objects when company is coming, and you long for the bedroom to become that place of quiet oasis.

Now that you have identified the ONE TASK that seems to elude you; consider what practical habit will need to be put into practice to accomplish the task.

That ONE HABIT should be:

Hosting Holiday Guests: Cleaning Checklist

When my kids were younger and we were deep cleaning the home together, they would ask me, “Mom, who is coming over?” It seemed that company spurred on deep cleaning.

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to having company over, especially if hosting overnight guests, I get stressed about wanting to have my home look “just so.”

If you are on “overwhelm mode,” use the following guest cleaning checklist as your holiday cleaning strategy.

Holiday cleaning checklist:

Brightly Green Cleaners-- safely and naturally cleans homes for your family & guests!

Two weeks out:

Shampoo carpets: Spot clean first with Brightly Green Carpet and Upholstery Spot Remover.

Clean oven: I like to use a paste of baking soda and water, for a non-toxic clean. Leave the paste on the inside surface of your oven for a couple of hours (or overnight) then wipe clean!

Wash doors and doorframes: Brightly Green Multi-Purpose Cleaner is great for doors! You’d be surprised to see how much dirt/dust sticks vertically to surfaces!

One Week out:

Clean light fixtures: Remove cooled fixtures (if possible) and wash in warm water with Brightly Green Hand Dish Wash or wipe clean with Brightly Green Multi-Purpose Cleaner. While you’re at it, wipe cooled light bulbs with a dry cloth.

We all know that our Thanksgiving celebration is a time to get together and share with family and friends a meal of thanksgiving. It’s all about the meal and being together. It is the one time of the year that most Americans set aside their diets and enjoy the familiar favorites that Grandma or Aunt Sue, always makes.

We finish the meal together and turkey coma sets in, ensuing a fight over the recliners. The holiday mode has begun. The More of Less... Routine Cleaning VS Marathon Cleaning

I remember back in elementary school during one of our English subject hours my teacher read a paragraph that did not contain any punctuation marks. She took a deep breath, and then proceeded to read the entire paragraph—without stopping. At the end, she gasped for breath and we all laughed. It was a wonderful illustration of the need for punctuation. Those pauses within and between sentences allows room for space. Space that distinguishes between thoughts and space that allows the reader to take a breath! Those tiny little punctuation markings greatly enhance comprehension of the written words.

What punctuation does for our written language, so breaks do for our 24- hour day.

Tiny pauses within the day allow our minds and bodies moments to regroup. Stress and burnout are reduced when you allow pauses in your day (and week). In a recent article, I read a suggestion to take two minutes to sit back, stretch and focus on a positive word or phrase after working for fifty minutes. The writer of the article said it helped a lot. I began to do this as well, and I agree with the article!

As I write this, I am reminded of the story about Abraham Lincoln when he was a lumberjack. He was found to be quietly sitting at the base of a tree, with his back resting on the truck on the tree. He was sitting there contently sharpening his ax. The other men working with him thought him to be lazy, as they were diligently sawing away at trees in the area. What the others failed to see was the reality that a sharpened ax had much greater capabilities than a dull one.

Productivity is enhanced when rest and margin are built into our days/weeks. When you say to yourself, “I just don’t have the time to take a break.” That is the very time you NEED to pause and rest. Even if for a couple of minutes every hour.

If we take the work/pause method to heart, we would apply it to all areas of our living; including housecleaning.

Marathon cleaning VS. scheduled/daily cleaning:

While marathon cleaning may knockout your housecleaning in one day, what does your home look like the rest of the week? Today’s busy schedules make marathon cleaning nearly impossible.

Best methods for scheduling housecleaning:

Go with the natural rhythms of your day! What time of the day do you have enough margin to carve out 15 to 20 minutes to dust/vacuum a room? When is the best time of the day to clean the bathroom? (Need a natural bathroom cleaner? Click link.)

What Weeds and Clutter Have in Common

I have come to the conclusion that clutter has similar properties to weeds.

Neither are enjoyable to confront,

yet are necessary to deal with if you want peace of mind, & body.

WEEDS CLUTTER

NO effort to grow. Easy to “grow.”

Starts small and non-threatening. The same.

Easily takes over. Will spread.

Weeds will come back. Clutter will return.

Requires decisive action to eliminate. The same.

Maintenance is required for control. Maintenance is a MUST.

(Guest post) A personal confession: I am guilty of neglecting my yard this summer. This is the first year that I have not been motivated to do yard work and it shows! I have prioritized other things and though that has been necessary (to a point), spending an hour here or there would make my yard look more attractive.

Seeing weeds in my flower beds is a CONSTANT REMINDER of my neglect. This makes me sigh mentally EVERY TIME I see the weeds! The reality is quite simple, I need to take an hour three days out of the week to get things cleaned up! This really is not difficult, I just need to prioritize the task.

Thankfully, the inside of my home does not reflect the neglect that the outside does! When I consider how I work to maintain a clutter-free interior, I think to myself how I need to apply the same principles outside that I do inside!

How I maintain a clutter-free home:

Everything has a place.

Everything is placed within boundaries.

Pantry storage is in boxes with like items or glass jars.

Books are in neat crates or bookshelves.

Clothes are in dressers, hung up in closets or in decorative wooden chests.

Daily (sometimes multiple times) clean kitchen counters and wash dishes.

Make bed daily.

Pick up items off floors and counters, end tables, coffee table, etc. and return those things to their homes.

I am a firm believer that clutter is kept under tight reigns when stuff is kept in its place!

Should Children do Household Chores?

You can find arguments for both sides of the topic; however, the majority of research indicates that children SHOULD do household chores. With that being said...

Why is it deemed so important?

From my gleaning on the topic; here are three repeating reasons in favor of why kids should do chores..

· Chores help children feel greater connectedness to the family through their contribution.

· Chores give children a sense of accomplishment.

· Chores are a necessary life skill that children need for adulthood.

Connectedness to the family:

Children can sense a feeling of happiness when they make meaningful contributions to the family. This is most often accomplished through household chores.

Children also learn the value of being part of a family through involvement in household tasks.

Sharing the load at home helps everyone. It says, “we are all in this together, everyone counts!”

The hit TV Series that came on the air in 1992 (running for 13 seasons), “Barney & Friends”, had a popular clean up song that had the following lyrics…

“…clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere; clean up, clean up, everybody do your share.”

It got many a preschooler busily cleaning up around the house when that song came on!

Yeah, Barney!!

In writing this post, I reached out and asked my twenty-four, year old son if doing household chores gave him a sense of family connectedness. His response was that doing the dishes made him feel more connection as everyone ate off the dishes.

A Sense of Accomplishment:

This is more easily seen with preschoolers and young elementary children. The prideful look on their faces when they have completed a task and you praised them for doing such a good job, immediately shows a sense of accomplishment!

Since the time each of my children were able to reach into the bottom of the washing machine without using a step stool, they have been doing their own laundry. It is a “rite of passage,” in our home. They are a “bigger kid” now! It was something I celebrated with them and each of them were happier to be “bigger kids.” If they tried to reach the bottom, but could not, they would actually be disappointed!

Again, my adult son shared with me that vacuuming the floor gave him a sense of accomplishment because it felt good to have a clean floor under his feet. Also, when he was older and had the task of mowing the grass, he said he really felt good after mowing the yard.

Before I share more, are your household cleaners non-toxic, safe for kids? For the upmost safety of your children you will want to use all natural household cleaners.

Necessary life skills:

What child ever said, “Mom, Dad, please let me clean the toilet!” NONE. Yet, the child who has been taught how to clean the toilet and HAD to clean the toilet will not, when on his own, watch a YouTube a video on how to clean a toilet (if a tutorial on toilet cleaning even exists) and be embarrassed by not knowing how. (On the comment section of one of the articles I read, a twenty-something year old young man wished his parents had taught him how to do chores while at home because it would’ve saved him great embarrassment in having to figure out how do to those tasks as an adult.)

A child who has to do household chores at home will make a better employee because he/she knows how to perform many of the job requirements most often needed at an entry level job.

Household chores also teach life realities.

Household chores teach kids that they can’t always do what they want when they want to.

There are tasks we have to do as adults, that we do not want to do. Bottom Line.

Teaching our children this reality while they are younger and at home, prepares them for doing things as an adult that they will have to do even when they do not want to.

One article against children doing household chores points to this very reality as a reason NOT to have children do chores around the home. They will have to clean the house as adults so don’t burden them with it now (was the jest of the argument). This line of thinking, I believe, sets children up for greater frustrations as adults.

There will be plenty of other life skills they will be learning on their own. Why add to the pile what they could’ve easily learned at from home and found success in!

The following excerpt from the commencement speech at the University of Texas in 2014 by U.S. Navy Adm. William H. McCraven is relevant to chores as life skills:

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.

If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished

the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and

it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another.

By the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into

many tasks completed.

BUT... My child is SO busy with school and sports, he doesn’t have time for chores.

KJ Dell’Antonia, Opinion writer for the New York Times, said,

“Sports and homework are not get-out-of-chores-free cards.”

That statement was an “ouch” for me.

I have been guilty of giving passes for these very reasons. In reflection, though, I think it is fair (and dare I say –healthy), to reduce the number of chores for kids that are heavily involved in sports while in school or have a part time job while in school. Children need to have some margin in their days just as much, and probably more so than adults. They should still do some chores, though just not as many.

In my own home, each of my children had household chores to do and as they got older, the number of chores fluctuated according to the activities they were involved in. No matter how busy they were, though, each were responsible to do their own laundry.

Still not sure chores are good for kids?

The Center for Parenting Education had this to say about not giving household chores for kids:

“One of the most frequently sited causes of over-indulgence stems from parents doing too much for their children and not expecting enough of them.”

The article went on to say, “By expecting children to complete self-care tasks and to help with household chores, parents equip children with skills to function independently in the outside world.”

Another way to think about kids doing home tasks is this, if you as a parent did all the household chores on top of your income earning job, when would you have the time to take family outings, or have game night, or movie night? Would you have as much energy for a trip to the beach or park?

Children do not lose their childhood when they have to do some tasks around the home. In the big scheme of the week, the amount of time actually spent doing chores is probably fifteen minutes to a half hour a day, if that.

My own children had plenty of time for play and margin for rest too. No one is saying they should do ALL the household work. Children should simply chip in and be a part of the weekly upkeep of the home they are a part of as family.

“I have not made my kids do chores, how do I get started?”

First of all—it’s never too late to start.

Why DIY Household Cleaners Fail

It is amazing to me the progress we make in society. Consider this… a few centuries ago the phrase “Do It Yourself” would not have been a topic of interest. Why? It was commonplace for people to “do it yourself.” If not you, then who?

Only those in the highest echelons would have been able to pay for services, i.e. dressmaking, tailors, cooks, etc.

According to Wikipedia, it was in the 1950’s that the phrase “do it yourself” came into common usage. Through the next two decades the practice of “do it yourself” grew in popularity as recent college graduates chose to purchase affordable, rundown older homes to renovate.

As our technology increased, so did the means to get the message out on how YOU can do things for yourself! Cable networks had popular shows such as “This Old House” starring Bob Villa. In 1994 HGTV came on the scene followed shortly by the DIY Network.

These hit channels have only fueled the desire to “Do It Yourself.” And why not? There is a sense of pride and accomplishment when you create/repair something on your own.

Personally speaking, I had much pride in a pallet patio I made in our backyard (with much help from my husband). I saw a design on Pinterest and thought, that looks awesome, I think we can do that!

Two months later, nearing the end of summer, we had the pallet patio finished. It looked amazing and was such a wonderful place to retreat! However… little did I know that even though I used a special stain that was water resistant, that was not enough to seal the patio from our harsh Michigan winters.

Fast forward three years and our pallet patio is on the verge of a do-over. More accurately, a pull-it-out and put down a flagstone patio, professionally, looks to be on our horizon.

Has that steered me away from my love of pallets? No. I just know better how to use them! Lesson learned—don’t use them as flooring for an outdoor seating area!

What are other projects we like to tackle in the DIY arena?

Making your own household cleaners is a big one! Thankfully, the public is coming around on the dangers of chemicals in household cleaners! For too long we have been duped into thinking that there are no real dangers in household cleaning products. If that were the case, why do most of the bottles have Warning Labels!

I get the desire to make your own cleaning products...

You want to be in control of what is used in your home.

You want to know exactly what the ingredients are.

You want to have a product that is inexpensive and readily available.

You want to use natural ingredients.

I get it.

Here’s the catch though. Like my pallet patio, not all products/materials are suitable for all surfaces.

Take for example vinegar and baking soda.

Is vinegar a natural product? Yes, a natural by-product of alcohol.

Is baking soda a natural product? Yes, (though not sustainable as it is mined from the ground).

These two substances are toted as being great natural household cleaners, but there is a HUGE CATCH!

Vinegar is highly acidic. It is actually harmful on stone/tile and wood surfaces.

Baking soda is abrasive and could also damage natural surfaces.

There are benefits to using vinegar and baking soda such as unclogging a slow drain. Vinegar is often used to clean coffee pots. I have even used vinegar on sunburns. That may sound crazy, but the vinegar draws out the heat. Do a web search on that. Baking soda and water have been used on bee stings to reduce pain and inflammation.

So, yes, there are uses for vinegar and baking soda besides cooking. I would just not use them for cleaning the surfaces of my home. Before I was introduced to Brightly Green, I used baking soda on my kitchen countertops. That was a mistake as the soda dulled the finish!

Recently my husband and I began the quest of looking for a new vehicle. With a student heading off to college on the horizon, I need my car for work (so I can help pitch in for college costs) and can no longer let my daughter borrow my car for her job.

The other morning as I was getting ready to prepare some bacon, I recalled a recent conversation I had with an older woman around the topic of bacon. She said she preferred baking it in the oven to avoid the messy grease resulting from frying it.
