With metrological Spring having sprung, it means Mother's Day and Easter are upon us. So what better than a short break by-the-seaside and a chance to enjoy and explore Brighton while it's still relatively quiet.

Maybe a long weekend at a bed and breakfast, or for those with a penchant for the more upmarket then a few snatched lazy nights in one of the city’s highly recommended hotels?

Once you are in the city then thoughts turn to nights-on-the-town and long lazy days of shopping and eating-out. Plus, the city is blessed with a brand new community sports stadium (home of Championship side, Brighton & Hove Albion), and the all-new Brighton Wheel.

Various city venues play host to See Festival, which runs from 24th March to 1st April. Billed as a documentary film extravaganza, it is headlined by the eccentric and never-less-than-entertaining, Shaun Ryder.

Brighton even had a link to the BAFTAs, when a local teen got to interview some of the world's biggest cinematic stars. City school & colleges are providing plenty of free opportunities for their students to get involved in the arts.

Finding Brighton Hotels During the Festival

Brighton is a very popular tourist destination throughout the year, so it can be a challenge to find somewhere to stay. And during the Brighton Festival throughout May the city is even more vibrant than normal attracting a broad cross section of visitors.

You might have used generic hotel websites and directories for other cities, where you never seem to find exactly what you are looking for, but Brighton has its own local hotel website Hotels Brighton as part of Brighton.co.uk.

Navigation of Hotels Brighton is very user friendly giving you simple key information about things like budget and size, pictures as well as the essential information about each Brighton hotel's main services.

Zoe Ball Praises City College's Prince's Trust Team

In her capacity as a Prince's Trust Ambassador, TV and radio personality Zoe Ball recently met a team of young people from Brighton who have successfully completed City College Brighton and Hove's Prince's Trust 'Team' programme, a 12-week personal development course which helps unemployed young people gain the skills and confidence to move into work or training.

Brighton Festival Launch

It's that time of year again. I think everybody in Brighton looks forward to May and the annual festival.

This year's Brighton Festival launched on Saturday with a blistering performance by Asian Dub Foundation, at Brighton Dome. And I'm looking forward to another great schedule of events from Brighton Fringe.

Brighton's monthly media event The Space boasts of hosting regular unique arts and media events in Brighton and more often than not they more than live up to the claim.

Where else would you get film-maker, Alan Parker, and Charlie Parsons, the creator of Channel 4's The Word, on the same platform. On Monday 18 October Brighton's The Space is doing just that.

There's a great article on today's The Brighton Magazine all about meditation, what it is and the benefits you get from it.

Sometimes meditation can sound very complicated or detached from reality, so it is refreshing to be able to read, and even learn about it, in a common sense practical way.

The article on The Brighton Magazine gives some basic information on meditation in an easy to read format avoiding jargon, so you understand meditation is neither a new age fad nor a complicated spiritual practice. Maybe it is something anybody can learn and benefit from - lets hope so.

There is also information about a new monthly meditation workshop starting on October 9th. The workshops are three hours long (10am to 1pm) on a Saturday and they are taught by Brighton meditation instructor Andy Lucas. He teaches using Yoga Nidra as well as some NLP and some other influences including the Huna tradition.

No snow fun for us in Brighton this weekend so a dose of ethical fashion will definitely lift the spirits, help save our pennies and the planet, and support local business.

Saturday and Sunday is the Red Mutha fashion fair for colourful, customised, recycled clothing and accessories by local designers, great for gifts and one off bespoke items that no one else will have.

Brighton has long been a haven for artists and art lovers of all persuasions but never before has it been so "cool" as it is now with a thriving scene of contemporary, urban and graffiti art.

Right next to Brighton.co.uk hq is the new innovative gallery space Visual Imprints, currently running the Off the Wall Show, with works from some of the UK's hippest artists. Having also hosted a couple of "Draw on the wall" nights, where Visual Imprint residents and local aspiring artists were invited to draw all over the gallery walls, Visual Imprints is definitely worth a look in.

Ink d is without a doubt another of Brighton's coolest galleries. Also a printing studio it boasts the newest collectable contemporary, urban and graffiti art and sells works by the well known artist Dan Baldwin, amongst others. Ink d is now showing "Stencil History X" that charts the origins and history of street art.

Rarekind, open since 2002, is possibly the best UK gallery for graffiti/hip hop influenced art. You may remember Rarekind appearing on Channel 4's "Faking It" series where a posh art history student managed to fake it as a convincing graffiti artist under the tutelage of Rarekind owner David Samuel. Brighton.co.uk thinks Rarekind is great and is proud to see it's art commissioned on buildings throughout the city.

Rain rain go away...so the weather doesn't look like it's going to ever improve so I'm going to buy a cagoul and get out for some good times this weekend.

Brighton is hosting Loop this weekend, which is described as a "Celebration of Digital Culture" and is further testament to the fact that Brighton is possibly THE hub for music and digital arts in the UK right now.

The One Love Festival at Herstmonceux Castle Estate where I shall be sploshing around in my wellies is also on this weekend and promises to be the "most distinctive festival of the summer calendar". With a mix of reggae, dub, chillout and deep electronic music and plenty else to do such as an art trail, Mbira workshops, yoga, treetop boulevard market and sound systems dotted amongst the wooodland, in true English spirit I'm going to get out and enjoy myself whatever the weather!

On a damp and dreary summer's evening it was a pleasure to have been invited to the opening of the Om cocktail lounge bar.
The bar is located on a rather unassuming street so it's a welcome surprise to step into it's vibrant but tranquil environment. It's bamboo and Asian decor and blissed out tunes create a chilled atmosphere, perfect for relaxing with a gorgeous cocktail (my favourite was a particularly fragrant concoction involving chilli).

Kettlebells come to Brighton and Hove

If you happened to be passing Hove lawns yesterday evening you might have witnessed the rather strange sight of several people swinging large balls of iron around.
Slightly amusing it may seem but apparently the next big thing to hit the fitness industry is these same balls of steel - the kettlebells!

According to Brighton personal trainer and kettlebell fitness guru Christian Vila "Kettlebell training takes us back to learning how to use our bodies better, as one unit. Because you are using so many muscle groups, you burn many more calories than conventional gym exercises. You’ll be burning up to 1,500 calories per hour when you become proficient in the various exercises. Compare this to 400 calories when running on a treadmill for an hour! Furthermore you’ll be boosting your metabolism, so you’ll continue burning fat for up to 36 hours afterwards"

Bloomsbury Street Open House

One of the best things about the May festival is undoubtedly the Open House Trail. With so many to visit you want to be sure not to miss out on the best.

One not to miss is Bloomsbury Street that is exhibiting work by over 10 artists including Brighton favourites Anna Tilson, Ken Eardley, Liz Toole and Nigel Peake who currently has a collection at Habitat.

Brighton Folk: Pinkyvision

Psychedelic skulls, fresh prints and paper magic on the beach brought to you by the incredible Pinkyvision experience.

Having recently relocated to Brighton, Pinkyvision has exploded with a whirl of electric colours in East London, Berlin, Seattle, Brighton and for The Big Chill, Dior, Justin Timberlake and Darth Vadar (o yes)!

Pinky's first Brighton show was at Toy Life in June last year and you might recognise his work from elsewhere in Brighton.
