Google Technology User Groups (GTUGs) are user groups for people who are interested in Google's developer technology. www.gtugs.org. There are more than 345 GTUG chapters in 95 countries that have organized more than 664 events worldwide.

In GTUG events, people interested in Google technology, be it Android, Google App Engine, product APIs like the YouTube API and the Google Calendar API, Google +, Google Apps meet and discuss about development of technologies around these tools.

Islamabad GTUG was the first GTUG group launched in Pakistan. In 2010 we hosted GTUG Islamabad first event around Google I/O 2011

The most valuable asset of a company nowadays is the employees and choosing best employees isn’t easy. Companies use services of professional experts to hire employees when you need a more diversified skill sets of candidates. These experts are known to us as “Headhunters”.

Mapping Voters Turnout in Pakistan

Higher turnout makes the democratic governments more strong, and at the same time makes Governments more accountable to the people of the country.

In any democratic system voters turnout is the most common and probably most important component of the individual's participation in the Political process. Economic, demographic, cultural, natural, technological and institutional factors effect the voters turnout in a country. However, one agreeable fact is that higher voters turnouts provide legitimacy to the elections and Governments.

In recent Egypt elections; more more than 70% of the voters participated in the first and second stage of the elections. That shows the will of the people to drive change in the country. Today, Pakistan is at a very crucial stage in its very short democratic life span. History has shown that most of the people in Pakistan do not take part in the elections; showing their lack of belief in the change through electoral process. In Pakistan, the highest voters turnout (55%) was observed in 1955 elections. http://pakreport.org/dowevote/#comparison

As maps with the interactive statistics are the right tools to tell story on the Internet today, our team compiled 2008 National assembly data and created the interactive chart to show how many percent of voters take part in elections in 2008 and launched http://www.pakreport.org/dowevote. You can zoom the map to the district level to see how many of us take part in the electoral process from each part of Pakistan.

The map shows the parts of the country where voters turnout ranges from 12.8% (Bajur Agency) to 67.33% (Bhakkar) percent.

Our efforts are to demonstrate that low voters participation is not a path forward to change in our country. Higher participation of the common people in the elections and steps of the Government to make voting easy for every one are the key factors to sustain democracy in Pakistan. Google Summer of Code Program 2011. Opportunity for Pakistani Students

March 2011 is closing. Pakistan has at-least 150 educational institutes offering computer science and related degrees, where approximately 10,000 students graduate every year.

After 45 days, as summer will be approaching, students will have a plenty of time to do something. Living in a country where opportunities are not as abundant as in the developed world, it is very important for all the students to look for opportunities in the global context.

It is time to explore and pitch for the every possible internship or part time work opportunity locally and globally that can make best of the time available in the summer period. In the words of Seth Godin “Go. Do that”. And these three words that make you do actions and apply for these programs.

We wanted to focus on our blog about a few important opportunities that Pakistani Students should try to avail during summer of 2011. One of them is

1. Google Summer of Code 2011

According to Google Summer of Code Program “Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a global program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects.” In this program along with students Google works with several open source, free software, non profit organisations that are developing software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund projects over a three month period.

Also through this program Students are paired with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects (175 open source projects are selected for 2011, see a complete list of selected organizations here), thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios and the opportunity for employment in areas related to their academic pursuits.

At this time selection of participant organisations is complete, student applications are opening after 4 days on 28th of March 2011. Along with working with the best organisations of the world to sharpen and learn new skills the program offers US $5,000 stipend.

The deadline to apply for students is 8th of April 2011 and complete timeline is available here and very detailed instructions on how to apply for students are available on the Google summer of code program website and can be find out by joining Internet Relay Chat (IRC) (now most of the discussions have moved to IRC channel and is open for everyone to join) or join Google mailing list (the mailing list is very active right now)

A few of the Pakistani students have been selected in the past in Google Summer of Code program including Mr. Adnan from Virtual university of Pakistan. This fact also negates the phenomena that only top university students have access to the opportunities in Pakistan.

Survey findings of compensation and benefits in FMCG industry of Pakistan

Better compensation and rewards system attracts and retain better talent in any industry. BrightSpyre.com did a salary and compensation survey by involving university students (Business discipline) of Muhammad Ali Jinnah University and Arid Agriculture University (in BrightSpyre’s summer intern-ship program).

The fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry in Pakistan primarily deals with the production, distribution and marketing of consumer packaged goods, i.e. those categories of products that are consumed at regular intervals. The companies in this sector include food & beverage, personal care, pharmaceuticals, plastic goods, paper & stationery and household products etc.

The survey was focused on finding out compensations, medical and insurance benefits, vacations and leave policies, training and development benefits, rewards and benefits in FMCG sector in general and specifically in the sales and marketing functions.

The multinational companies provide better compensation and benefit structure than national and local companies along with better compensation at all levels.

Most of employees including managers and executives of national and multinational companies are entitled for medical insurance coverage immediately and mostly middle and lower level employees are qualified for medical insurance after probationary period. Multinational and national companies also provide short term disability insurance.

Bonus payments are also a normal practice in FMCG industry where 83% of the companies give annual and incentive based bonuses to employees.

The local companies in the FMCG industry need to introduce better insurance schemes. In more than 90% of the industry employees are entitled for fifteen to eighteen days paid holidays.

In the next phase, the survey will be extended to include more organizations and conduct more detailed survey.

The survey findings are based on the sample of data collected during the period of June 2010 to July 2010 from the local, national and multinational companies’ staff. BrightSpyre particpating in Skills Training for Special Youth

BrightSpyre participated in an Awareness Raising Fair on Skills Training for Special Youth was held on Saturday April 24, 2010 at Umeed-e-Noor (a program of Hashoo Foundation), as center for people with special needs.

This project aims to train 172 men and women between the ages of 14 – 29 in skills such as pottery (clay work), tailoring, embroidery and housekeeping. Other trainings to be introduced for special people at Umeed-e-Noor include Origami, basic computers and mobile repairing.

Mr. Waseem Younus, Manager Corporate Sales, from BrightSpyre discussed on the issues related to training, career opportunities, and entrepreneurship for people with special needs. He also led light on the efforts of BrightSpyre in working with STEP (Special Talent Exchange Program) in launching the first job board for disabled people. BrightSpyre in collaboration with STEP has embarked on an initiative to support people with disabilities seek better and qualified jobs within Pakistan and abroad.

Future initiatives of BrightSpyre for the special ones were also discussed in the session.

Analysis of jobs search in Pakistan based on popular searches

Following is our first day analysis of jobs search in Pakistan based on popular searches on BrightSpyre.

First priority of job seekers is to filter jobs by location. So, three major cities of Pakistan are in hot searches all the time. The words Islamabad, Karachi & Lahore are searched 660, 214 and 97 times respectively.

Secondly as there are quite a few job openings from Etislat (searched 460 times) in Afghanistan (searched 260 times) so these are the second most popular searches.

Thirdly choice for job seekers is to search by function. So Finance, Admin & Network are the third most popular searched keywords.

The last position taken by popular searches is sector/industry wise search by job seekers. So, Telecom and Development is searched 148 and 122 times respectively.

2nd Creative Leaders Conference; BrightSpyre Guiding Young Leaders

BrightSpyre, once again, joined hands with ECI and SOUL to hold 2nd Creative Leaders' Conference (CLC-2009) featuring the theme of "Justju Jo Karay Wo Chuay Asman". CLC is designed to educate, enlighten, encourage and empower the Pakistani youth through Workshops, Hands on Training, Recreational activities, and Events. This event was one of its kind and it got tremendous response from Young Leaders, Entrepreneurs, Corporate Executives, Social Workers, Politicians and Technology Gurus. BrightSpyre was there to motivate, direct and guide young leaders towards their future endeavors.

Event was packed with discussions, workshops, presentations and handful of interactive activities. BrightSpyre invited Todd Shea, American volunteer working in Pakistan since 2005, who deliberated his wonderful experience in Pakistan and he also sung Dil Dil Pakistan which boosted young leaders and audience.

Another year is about to come to a close and once again we are extremely thankful to our users to make it yet another successful year for us.

BrightSpyre signs MoU with USAID & IBA

BrightSpyre, USAID Pakistan (Jobs) and Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Sukkur signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Saturday 12th September 2009 to work together for the placement of approximately 100,000 Pakistanis on highly skilled jobs nationwide.

Speaking on this occasion Mr. Fasial Chohan, Co Founder BrightSpyre, expressed his pleasure and said, "It is a great new step for job seekers not only in urban centers but also smaller towns in locating jobs throughout Pakistan." This Agreement is significant step forward for promoting talent with good technical skills and finding them great new avenues to locate jobs.

This MOU is first of its kind that will bring a revolution in Pakistani Industry and will also help the non technical Pakistanis especially youth and a woman to acquire the technical skills and find the opportunities on a single platform that is BrightSpyre.

Creative Leaders Conference 2009 (CLC-2009 is the first exclusive forum of its kind to bring leader's splinter groups together who value persistent innovation and fostering of diverse strengths in their efforts to make a difference. CLC 2009 assembled around 200 youngsters from across the country. The theme of the conference was "hai jazba janoon tou himmat na haar". CLC 2009 was a 3 day conference designed to educate, enlighten, encourage and empower the Pakistani youth through workshops, Hands on Training, Recreational activities, and Events. Besides, Eminent Scientists, Renowned Educationists, Politicians, Famous Sports Personalities, Successful Businessmen and Celebrities from Showbiz delivered outstanding lectures on imperative subjected matters.

BrightSpyre was among the partners to the event, it did all the E-Branding for CLC-2009. BrightSpyre also arranged a Career Counseling Session exclusive for CLC-2009 participants where the panel included Saadia Malik from Teradata, Talat Haider from AWT and Omer Nazir from GHPL. The session was chaired by Ms. Tahira Abdullah, the famous social activist.

BrightSpyre in National Job Fair 2009

Brightspyre along with International Islamic University and Jang Group organized National Job Fair (2009) on 9th & 10th of June 2009. Job fair held at the International Islamic (Faisal Mosque Campus) was a huge success. You could see a huge influx of job seekers applying for jobs on 44 stalls representing different companies. A big community of females was also present there. This shows that the trend of keeping women restricted to the households is changing and not only are these girls themselves willing to do jobs but their families are supporting them as well, as they see this as a necessity for the woman of today. The event started in morning and continued till evening with students coming with the same enthusiasm all day. This job fair gave them the opportunity to apply in many companies simultaneously rather then going to these companies individually, that too with the rare chances of even getting called after they drop their resumes.

Brightspyre played a vital role by encouraging students and collected more than 1,500 resumes each day and conducted walk-in-interviews. BrightSpyre and its parent organization Cogilent Solutions joins hands with UM Healthcare Trust to support relief efforts for Buner and Swat refugees in rural Mardan. BrightSpyre has consented to collect donations/supplies/equipment of all sorts in Islamabad and send it to the victims/refugees in Mardan in collaboration with UM Healthcare Trust.

UM Healthcare Trust (http://www.umtrust.org) was established in 2004 with the aim to provide affordable healthcare for the poor and needy in rural Pakistan. Today, By the Grace of God, they are successfully running their services on a regular basis in rural Mardan District of Pakistan. Their hospital is located in the village of Zahidabad, NWFP which is 200KM North of Islamabad. Since September 2008, they have treated over 15,000 patients off which over 5,000 have proper medical histories and tracked on a regular basis.

UM Healthcare Trust's hospital in Zahidabad is located at the border of Buner District and therefore, they have witnessed a huge influx of refugees into the area since the conflict began earlier in April 2009. In fact, an estimated 100,000 refugees are located/housed in a 10KM radius of this medical facility. The conflict, that has been going on since the War on Terror began earlier this decade, has caused over 1.5 million refugees in the province of NWFP (North West Frontier Province) of Pakistan. As a response to this crisis, UM Healthcare Trust, in collaboration with its stakeholders (NUST, APPNA among others) has launched a massive healthcare relief effort for the refugees streaming in from the Buner & Swat district.

In this hour of the need for refugees we need your support as we are running short on medical supplies.

No international non-profit is not operating in our area and thus our limited resources are under a lot of stress. STEP Job Board - A Step Forward for Persons with Disabilities

Did you know that there are over 16 million persons with disabilities in Pakistan? And did you know that majority of these people are unemployed and do not have a job? Did you know that Government of Pakistan requires, by law, every enterprise to hire 2% of the workforce from persons with disabilities. Did you know that there are over 65,000 private limited companies registered with Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) yet, hardly 1% if registered enterprises comply to these rules set by the Government?

BrightSpyre in collaboration with STEP (Special Talent Exchange Program) has embarked on an initiative to support people with disabilities seek better and qualified jobs within Pakistan and abroad. The Job Board was inaugurated by Mr. Zamrud Khan, Managing Director of Bait-ul-Mal, Pakistan. Mr. Khan in his speech talked about the need to influence the government to understand their needs and hoped that together we can prevail on the government to have atleast five seats reserved in the Parliament and Senate for people with disablities.

This year, STEP and BrightSpyre will promote the recruitment of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in all across Pakistan and bring awareness to the cause.

Mr. Atif Sheikh, President, STEP emphasized the need to bring people with disabilities into the mainstream by giving them employment opportunities just like any other individual. In his speech, we learned that Pakistan government first recognised the need for PWD in 1981 and only in 2002 did the framework was developed and adopted by the government. Still a lot of work has to be done including making places accessible to the disable in Pakistan.

The ceremony was attended by the HR managers of leading enterprises in Islamabad.

STEP is a non-profit organization run and managed for the people with disabilities by themselves. It was founded by the Alumni of Special Education Centers who felt the need to form a cross disability self-help group. Students Talent Exchange program (STEP) was then conceived and launched by the alumni of special education centers of Islamabad in order to bring a change in the behavior of society toward People with disabilities (PWDs) in 1997.
