As I was in need of a new bag for traveling (I didn't have any budget at the moment to buy my dream North Face bag), I thought of finally freeing up of junk my blue JanSport Big Student backpack. It was a padala (consignment) of my Auntie from the U.S. (so it is an original!). If I'm not mistaken, I had it since second or third year college -- that's almost 10 years of just using it as a storage bag! True to its brand, the bag's still functional and strong despite stuffing it with big photo albums, old toys, random school stuff and a can of Budweiser. Yes, I kept a can of Budweiser. And the can was years older than the bag itself.

I can still vividly remember the very first time I went on a "gimik" to the mall. I was with some of my second-year high school classmates, with whom I didn't even share any close ties with. It was only because my high school crush invited me, and for her I tried enduring the company.

Their idea of fun -- drink inside the cinema. I was not yet a drinker at the time, and back then I didn't look like a "pasaway" student (in fact, I looked very nerdy). That was probably the reason why my crush handed me several cans of Budweiser to keep in my backpack. My role: slip the beer cans inside the cinema.

I used to bring almost everything in school so I was able to easily hide the cans behind my numerous stuff. We went inside a Japanese karate movie -- which was so bad that the title didn't even ring a bell -- because we knew not a lot of people would be watching. We were right, thus our group was able to enjoy drinking in our "private" space. Every now and then, my crush -- who was seated in front of me, next to another boy classmate of mine -- would ask me to hand her one can to another. Oh, I could still remember the urge to be obedient. It could have been just my imagination -- as the observation called for only during the darker parts of the movie -- but I was almost very sure that my crush was cajoling with my classmate.

I knew that being jealous was as useless as the fact that I am liking her. But it felt good liking someone so much so that it felt just right. Conscious or not, I've allowed myself to be dictated, flowing through the course of life around.

Half-way through the film, people inside the cinema were already getting annoyed with our little noise. Before we get into too much trouble, everyone decided to go out of the movie house. My memory could still recall the smile I had as we make it through the exit. Two Budweisers were still left in my backpack -- I knew I was bringing home a token from a girl I once dreamed was mine.

A colleague once advised that I "open up to more people." I actually thought I am doing so by owning this personal blog. Nevertheless, it got me thinking that majority of my most memorable experiences -- some I thought were regretful -- were kept hidden even from my closest friends. If they get to read this story arc, I believe they would be surprised. First and foremost, they never knew that I once considered myself a drunkard.

Disclaimer again: No, I have no intentions of boring the whole world by sharing much about my life. But like most of us, snippets of our old life do end up as amusing stories to be blurted out -- or so I thought.

And since this is my blog and I have the whole right to write anything under the sun, let me be proud of myself by putting "former" in what could have been my outlook over life and love:

The Value of Breaking One's Own Heart

Episode 10 of ABC's Once Upon A Time tells the story of Snow White desperately finding a cure to forget her love for his prince. She ended up making a deal with Rumpelstiltskin. And despite the dwarfs' effort to stop her from drinking the potion, she ended up doing it anyway. It was too late for her to know that her prince backed out of the wedding and that he came looking for her.

Snow White's choice made perfect sense to someone who hasn't found value in breaking one's own heart. And that's what I'm trying to understand.

No, this is not about a girl. More than a usual love story, it's about the journey I've been trying to run away from. In fact, I ran too much that I ended up bumping into the same situation I thought I've given up a long time ago.

It has been more than a week now since the Word shifted its focus on family. A topic I didn't know was too sensitive for me, that is, until I heard what He has to say about it. Ever since, it felt like my mind's lingering on every thought I've heard, yet I can't even comprehend why it became a big deal after all. If this statement doesn't even make any sense, then I guess it is. Probably that's what it means when one's trying to cover up something that has to exist.

That episode of Once Upon A Time obviously didn't end up in Happily Ever After. Surely, in the coming episodes, Snow White's friends would have find a way to regain her memories and bring back the love. But it won't be easy. That made me ask myself, "Are you really willing to give up a future that's good, pleasing and perfect?"

Funny that it needs an episode like this to remind me of one prayer I've longed to happen -- that He breaks my heart on everything that breaks His. I cannot just run away and go back to the past just so I can forget how hurting it is to lose oneself. I have to admit, I have no idea where these thoughts are leading me. But all I know is that the pain is causing me to find more of Him.

Exclusive Getaway

Think Punta Fuego and exclusivity comes to mind. Boasting for being a high-end residential beach front property, I never thought I would be able to even step inside this one-of-a-kind private community. Thanks to my colleagues as they're able to "contract" with an owner who, upon us accepting their terms, allowed our team for an overnight stay in their house. But what could have been a luxurious vacation turned out to be a weekend of unfortunate events.

I opted not to include a photo of the entire house since it is a private property. Theirs is located in the 88-hectare Peninsula de Punta Fuego (Translation: "Point of Fire") which was developed in 1995. Three years later, Terrazas de Punta Fuego, originally a 61-hectare property, was built. It is a must to bring a car (or a van for a group) if you go to Punta Fuego. It is 88 hectares and the facilities are built apart from each other!

We arrived at around 10:00ish just in time to prepare for lunch. After eating, we asked our driver to take us to the Peninsula Beach. It is quite a short stretch but the water is pretty deep just about 8 to 10 tiptoe swim from the shoreline (at least for my height!). Since it's an exclusive resort, it wasn't too crowded. Unfortunately, though, that weekend was when Typhoon "Ambo" entered the country so, well, it rained for the majority of the time we were there. First unfortunate event.

And raining on a beach isn't exactly what one would enjoy. With that, we instead rented a banana boat. It costs PHP1,800 (two flips) for 15 minutes for 8 people. Since there were 10 of us, we haggled for them to allow everyone, and eventually they said yes! For most of us, it's a first so "kuya" wasn't that hard on us. I wish he were but I got to give it to my colleagues. Still, it was blast! However, one of my peeps, Josh, got her ankle "re-injured" (as it was already sprained the night before). If only I remembered, I would not have allowed her. Second unfortunate event.

We decided not to stay at the beach after that adventurous ride. We checked the time and it was only 1:00PM despite the day looking like it was 4:00ish already. And so we thought we use the opportunity to enjoy the facilities at the clubhouse. It was still raining and we didn't want to wet our van so we figured out it's best to walk. Yes, walk! We didn't know how far it was so we just enjoyed goofing around in the rain. It couldn't even remember the last time I did this!

After like a 3-kilometer walk (yes it's that far), we arrived at the Main Club and quickly asked for an available nurse. Good thing they have -- plus points for Club Punta Fuego! While Josh was being medicated, we inquired about the club's facilities and from there we learned that guests have to pay Php500 each for the full use of the club (It's free for club members). Not everyone's amenable to it so we decided to think about it overnight. For us who wanted to do it, we thought it's best to go back early morning the next day so we could make use of our money's worth, that is, hoping the next day's weather would be better.

While the girls were preparing early for dinner, I was able to successfully set up our Magic Sing. All was well, when, lo and behold, the electricity shut down! The house has no generator so waited patiently. The power came back but after about 10 minutes, it shut down again! Videoke attempt failed.

We ate at the house's outdoor kitchen so we were unfazed by the blackout. The power came back for the third time so we attempted another videoke session. However, as soon as everyone's settled down in the entertainment area, well, blackout na naman!. Videoke attempt really failed. Third unfortunate event.

At that point, we called the owner to help us with the situation but it just ended up in an argument, which included an unfair offer to make up for what happened. I'd rather not go into details. Fourth unfortunate event.

Because of that, as soon as the electricity came back, I asked everyone to just use the time to wash up and prepare for bed. Unfortunately, in barely 10 minutes, yes, the power was off again. It was then decided to arrange the extra mattresses on a big space on the first floor because it provides a cooler atmosphere. Despite the rain, it was weirdly humid inside the house. Minus the scary stories being attempted to share, it was turning out to be a good night sleep until I felt some droplets of water on my face. When I woke up, I saw that water's dripping from the stair's stringer (I was sleeping below the stairs). With that, the sleep was completely interrupted. Fifth unfortunate event.

Nevertheless, the next day, I proposed that we spend the rest of the morning at the clubhouse. With the situation being the same still, this time everyone agreed to spend some money for comfort and fun. The weather was cooperating that day so we knew this time it'll be better. Since we were only guests, the management had to verify that indeed the owners granted us privilege to use the club. After checking here and there, we're able to go inside. As guests, we were required to wear our water-proof wrist bands, which I thought were really cool.

The club is famous for its Infinity Pool. This one in the Peninsula has two levels, one measuring 3 feet, the other 5 feet. It sits right where there's a wide view of the South China Sea. I'd also have to commend the club for having one of the cleanest and clearest pool I've ever swam into (like there's really a way to qualify pools! LOL!). To simply put it. this amenity we really enjoyed.

Aside from the Main Club's pool, there are also swimming pools at the Lower and Upper Beach Clubs. The available service transport at that time was headed to the Lower Beach Club, thus we spent the rest of our stay there.

The experience was coupled with a number of mishaps yet it was genuinely fun. It was originally set as a team-building activity (which turned out to be just a group trip) and the goal was still achieved. In fact, I actually thought that's what made it all exclusive. It may not be an ideal "Punta Fuego" getaway but we are proudly owning this experience. Indeed, a trip becomes truly memorable when you have no idea what to expect.

Bagnet in the City

Since our barkada travel in 2005, I had this silly notion that bagnet is the Vigan longganisa. I wasn't probably paying attention when our friend Jaja (who's from La Union and the one who toured us) bought and served the Vigan longganisa and not the bagnet. I guess I had a stuck thought of the term as it was always mentioned since we arrived in Vigan back then. It was only when our friend Anj treated us last weekend that it all changed. LOL!

It would have been nice if the enlightenment happened in Vigan as well; nevertheless, the food experience carried with it the required authenticity, thanks to the artsy, indie-feel resto in Makati, that is, 8065 Bagnet.

The restaurant got its name from the street it's located, 8065 Estrella Street and, of course, from its specialty, the bagnet. It is owned and operated by Alain Nadal, brother of Kitchie Nadal (no wonder the interior screams of a "rocky" mood).

We ordered three types of bagnet -- Original (Php175), Bagnet Spicy Gata (Php185) and Bagnet Sisig (Php185). While I am not in the position to compare 8065’s bagnet to its local counterpart in Ilocos, I’d have to say it delivers. Every bite of the meat reveals a soft-and-crispy tasty combination, divulging the fact that indeed the product lives in its “twice-fried” reputation. To further enjoy the bagnet, you may smear it with gata or mix it with sisig seasoning, thus adding more flavor into it. But just like eating lechon kawali, beware of too much bagnet. I became too cautious as well having eaten more than enough at that time. Hehehe…

Why Jessica Sanchez's Idol run matters much to the Filipinos

Jessica Sanchez was only starting to create a buzz when I shared to my colleague the fact that another Filipino made it to American Idol 11. Expectantly, she knew about it, but she also quickly commented "Ina-acknowledge ba nya na Pinoy sya?” (Does she acknowledge that she’s a Filipino?). And she listed a number of American "stars" with Filipino roots who do not acknowledge themselves as being one -- Vanessa Hudges, Rachel Bilson, among others. She got a point, but I believe Jessica's case is different.

For once, I read that she’s very much aware of her roots and she’s very proud to be one. Nevertheless, that doesn’t take away the fact that she’s also Half-Mexican. That means Mexico can also always claim her as theirs. For me, though, it’s thrilling to see an Asian-Hispanic making a name via the most-watched television show in the US.

This is not my first post on American Idol. I’ve declared myself a fan of the show when I posted an article on Thia Megia. Of all the series, I’d say I have been very consistent in watching almost every episode of the show since Season 5. In fact, I am self-proclaimed know-it-all fan, having been correctly predicted who’s going to win or make it to the Finale (Final 2) on just the basis of their auditions (The prediction I share to my friends, not on this blog, so ask them if you don’t believe me. LOL!). I’ve predicted Katherine McPhee (Taylor Hicks won), Jordin Sparks (she won!), David Archuleta (David Cook won, who I predicted to sing it off with David C in a blog I made for Ramiele Malubay, which is now non-existent), Adam Lambert (Kris Allen won, who I then predicted to win after “Heartless”), Crystal Bowersox (Lee Dewyze won), Lauren Alaina (Scotty McCreary won) and Phillip Phillips but not until Jessica Sanchez sang “The Prayer” on Sing For Your LIfe Week (as we all know her audition piece wasn’t shown). While I’m not a fan of most of them, I knew they would make it simply because of gut feeling. Moreover, I would really soak myself on every performance and rely whether I’m moved or not – and I make sure I’m not influenced by what others think of the performance.

And so combine it up with the fact that Jessica Sanchez is Half-Filipino. That makes her relatable. That’s why the whole country gets crazy when she hits the stage.

She represents. Yes, being Filipino is only half of her being. That’s still 50%. That’s sharing half of the dream. And Filipinos, even those I don’t expect to bother, find time to root for Jessica – through Twitter, Facebook, blogs, newspapers, etc. Name any form of media in the country, Jessica’s name would be mentioned one way or another. In fact, on live chats, Jessica’s the only one with active “backers” when someone bashes her performance.

Nationalism. Simply put, it’s like when Manny Pacquiao has a fight. While Jessica’s case is different, she still has shown what Filipinos (or Half-Filipinos) are capable of – she representing talent; us representing unity. Why bother support an “American” Idol? It’s because that’s one arena where the whole world pays attention to. It’s not like every day the world gets to recognize Filipinos. When there’s at least one little chance that we would be, it ignites pride in all of us.

Jessica probably is still overwhelmed with so much support from a country where she has never stepped in. But that actually makes her journey worth the fuzz – she genuinely dreams like any other Filipino. Have we heard anyone saying he/she is reaching a goal solely for the country? With the plight of our economy, I doubt it’s a priority. Nevertheless, it’s still a fulfillment to know that by mere dreaming, you can make your country proud. If, we, Filipinos make a big deal out of her American Idol run, it’s because it is in fact a big deal.

In a Towering Awe: Up the Capones Island Lighthouse

I was informed that we were going on an island-hopping the next morning, but I didn't know it was only really "island"-hopping (yes, singular). It was only at Capones Island. But despite that, I was never disappointed. In fact, I was glad we spent the whole morning admiring the whole island.

Capones Island is another 20-minute boat ride from Anawangin. For some reason, we were not of equal number or weight, thus I had to stay at the back of the boat where there's no "trapal" (cover). Nonetheless, I was able to endure the sun, thanks to my SPF60 sunblock and to Budz, who shared her shoal.

The sun actually didn't stop me from enjoying the sight and what we were about to experience in the island. I even thought it was due to the heat that I was pumped up when we finally landed in Capones Island. Unlike Anawangin, Capones is a rocky island.

As I didn't want to waste time and energy, I invited Marnie and the rest of the Top 4 to quickly start the walk.

It was an easier trek, if it was even considered as one. There was already a trail to follow and the trees covered some part of the sunlight as we walked.

After about 15 minutes, we were able to reach the Capones Lighthouse. It thought it was the setting for the "Parola" (Filipino for "lighthouse") episode of Shake, Rattle & Roll 13. It looked like it but I didn't bother verify. Yes, all its outbuildings, except for the lighthouse itself (actually its topmost part only or the watch room), was left to rust, but I thought it actually added to its charm. But, of course, if they plan to ever fix this, it would really be a cool site.

There were a lot of people still on the watch room so we waited for our turn to experience the view. When it was ours, we maximized our time till another bigger group arrived.

While circling its main gallery (space located outside the watch room), I saw stairs going up to its topmost part. I suddenly remembered a post by one of my favorite travel bloggers, Ed of Solofighted, on which he boldly stand on this.

I attempted to do the same but I could only muster enough courage to just sit. I guess I couldn't be as brave as Ed yet (I'll get there, dude! LOL!). But I was still glad I did manage to sit and was able to see a larger view of the sea from the top.

Silly as it may sound, I felt that this and the two other episodes of this story arc has allowed me to steer the "wild" heart that has been kept inside for a very long time. Little did I know this experience would make me realize what John Eldredge has always talked about in his books. At that time, I couldn't help but thank Him for pushing me on this trip. While it was a chance for us to honor our dear friend Jeff, it was also a moment that He used to minister inside my heart.

And yes, because of this, I intend to take more travels every now and then! If the initiation includes conquering the world, then I am ready for it!

I Heard the Good News in Sagada

If I remember it right, we were walking towards the Hanging Coffins when I received this text message, paraphrasing, "Nacontact na namin ang mama mo" (We were able to contact your mom). I don't remember if I made a call or text to confirm if it's true or not, but all I know was that I was "happily shocked," if there is such a word. But, at that time, really the emotion was more than words could describe.

And I believe it's quite fitting that no words could translate the feeling that I had at that moment. I've read status messages saying if there's more to "I love you" or "thank you," that's what they would say to their moms. More so, in my case, that I was finally be able to feel how is it to be nurtured, cared and loved.

It's a long distance relationship, mom, but I could feel your love going beyond texts and calls. Just wanted to say, you've completed the puzzle in my life and that means a lot to me. It's a mystery that despite the long separation, we can sincerely say we love each other. It was at the right timing, mom, and it was all orchestrated by God. I guess that's how He created moms like you, that when I was in your womb we already made a bond. Just wanted to honor you today as it's your day. I love you.

View from the Top: Trek of the Anawangin Mountain

I was not ecstatic at all when Orli told me we were going to take a trek on that day. First, my only decent rest (not even sleep) since my shift from the night before was on the hammock. Second, I am not mentally prepared to get bruised. However, just like the very reason I was in that place, I was glad I said yes like any other friend (peace, Orli!).

I asked Orli if he knows the name of the mountain but he has no idea as well. I tried researching for it but no other blogs have detailed or shared if there is really a specific name for the mountain we were about to trek (or maybe I have not been so diligent in looking). Anyway, the mountain was located on the left side of the beach (if you're facing the waters).

FYI: This trek is not the same as what I've mentioned in my previous post (where a boy is a guide). That "longer" trek is a route going to and from the beach, an option from taking the outrigger boat.

But it's not that intimidating at all. It is rather a small mountain. Nevertheless, the trek was a popular activity as it gives a panoramic view of the whole Anawangin Cove. As previously stated, there were a lot of people on the beach, thus the trekking was no exception. The mountain was rocky and some parts were steep, but the real challenge was stopping on some sharp edges just to let a number of people go downhill. These stops, though, were our chance to take some shots of the broadening view of the cove.

As much as I wanted to document the whole trek, my beach slippers were of no help as it's, well, made for the beach, not for trekking. And did I mention a lot of people going down? There was only one trail (though on some parts you can "detour") so we had to be careful not to bump on people or slip when we needed to suddenly stop.

Despite the heat, I enjoyed the exhaustion. For some reason, my body ached for such physical activity. I thought it must have been due to consistent sit-ups and push-ups I've been doing at home, or probably due to a brief state of euphoria (I am usually extra energetic when I lack some sleep). Whatever the reason was, it gave me a sense of satisfaction. I was enjoying the hike that I almost didn't realize we've reached the first clearing.

Most of our companions did not continue to the topmost part of the mountain, but Orli and I were up to the challenge. I was challenged even more knowing that three of our guys have already made it to the top (competitive! LOL!). It was steeper; nevertheless, I was determined to see what Anawangin has in store for us. In no time, I couldn't help but smile from ear-to-ear seeing the beauty, that is, Anawangin.

Like any other climb, going down was so much easier, except that at some point I was sliding because of, well, my slippers. I didn't want to take them off because I might get cuts on my feet, thus I decided to use my hands as support.

We were originally going to stay to catch the sunset from the first clearing but we thought it's wise to start early in preparing for dinner. Nevertheless, our photographer buddies (Ofel and Noah) managed to take some good shots before the actual sunset.

I was pretty sure the group had an enjoyable experience, but for me it was a double treat. The bird's eye view of the cove was such a pleasure and the trek was a much needed break from my everyday routine. It was indeed a reminder of how much I've longed to go back to my active lifestyle.

Seeking the Swamp: Appreciating the Anawangin Banks

Since we arrived late lunch time in Anawangin, my companions were not in the mood to hit the beach. But I never wanted to waste an opportunity to explore the place and so I invited them instead to join Orli and I in checking out its infamous swamp.

Consider this a side trip for a swamp is not ideal for splash or plunge. Wikipedia even states that swamps are generally seen as "useless and even dangerous." And, yes, you would be warned about mosquitoes and other who-knows-what-organism-the-stagnant-water-offers. Nevertheless, the harsh naturalness of the swamp is what makes it a delight to the eyes.

Not pretty, yes. But that is why "exotic" is best to describe nature -- the fact that it defies beauty's definition. Dirty water? I've braved great floods in UST so soaking on this swamp was never an issue for me. LOL! Sidenote: We met a boy who's a guide when you trek the Anawangin mountain instead of taking a boat (that's either going to or from). I believe he's offering it for Php500. Not sure, though, if it's a package.

The water gets deeper as you walk further, and at the same time the swamp's natural beauty is slowly uncovered. There's also a bridge that's structured on, I believe, the more deeper part of the swamp. I was saving my camera's battery for the beach so I failed to take more pictures. There were also a lot of people walking on it so we didn't bother join.

At first I was hesitant to say yes to my friend Orli's sudden invite to take the Anawangin Cove/Capones Island tour since I didn't plan to take any summer trips except for joining our company outings. Yes, call me a bum for thinking twice but it's just that I always preferred planning ahead of time. That's a preference, not a "best practice." Good thing I agreed to join. So far it has been the most physically satisfying trips I've ever had.

I'd have to admit -- once we were already aboard the boat, I got really excited. After all, this is my very first out of town trip after 10 months! The sites and pristine waters were enough to fill in the excitement.

After about the 20-minute boat ride, we arrived on Anawangin Cove at around 12:30PM, thus the campsite was already crowded with visitors. I was surprised to see so many people since my first impression of the place was supposedly a serene, secluded place. I even prevented my former agents to go to this place because of drowning incidents I've read on several blogs -- that was way back in 2008-2009. Fast forward to 2012, I thought it was turning into Puerto Galera, minus the parties, cellphone signal and electricity.

Despite that, the mystic appeal of the cove is just enough to satisfy one's hunger for beauty. It is indeed a phenomenon to see pines trees growing behind the banks of the cove. It is believed that the seeds were brought there by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.

While that was the very first time that I've actually camped (yes, never experienced camping when I was a kid), I'd have to agree that the place was perfect for such. For once, your bed cushion's courtesy of Anawangin's mixture of volcanic ash and white sand! The calming effect of the place even lulled me to sleep on one of our hammocks!

The appeal of the cove -- in geomorphology (per Wikipedia) described as precipitously walled and rounded cirque-like openings as in a valley extending into or down a mountainside -- was surely astonishing, such that I was engrossed to explore. In fact, I only swam for about 10 to 20 minutes and the highlights of my weekend were the strolls and treks of the area.

The experience was so fulfilling that it inspired me to create yet another story arc. Special thanks to my friend Orli and his bestfriend Jeff who celebrated his birthday and shared his blessings by taking us there. :)

Me and my Green Tea Mochi!

From the time it was featured in MYX's Wer U At (which was June 2011!), Mochiko has since sealed a lingering gustatory desire in my taste buds. Twice I maundered the whole Eastwood Mall when someone told me they have a stall inside the mall, on one of which I was even late for work. But to no avail -- checked Mochiko's Facebook and they were there for only the weekends of January. I was unable to visit them since I was taking the graveyard shift and my body's screaming sleep over food. Also, many times I've planned to go to Mercato just to finally satisfy my craving, but my weekend trips were never near Global City (or if they were, Mercato's already closed).

And so I was very glad when my friend Candice suggested to visit Mercato as our "pagpag" venue (Sidenote: "pagpag" is a Filipino "pamahiin," that is, a tradition to go somewhere else before heading home to avoid having the ghost of the dead follow you -- we visited a dear friend's family's wake somewhere in Taguig). While I don't actually believe in such tradition, I was just thankful that I get to finally buy my very first Mochi Ice Cream!

Of course, I had to try their bestseller, Green Tea Mochi! As expected, it didn't disappoint. The starchy taste of its "mochi" (pounded sticky rice) is purposely complemented by the sweetness of the ice cream filling -- like enjoying rice with a good viand!

Thinking it might take months before I could go back to Mercato, I seized to buy yet another bestseller, Cookie Dough Mochi! It's sweeter than Green Tea but since it's overloaded with flavorful vanilla ice cream and cookie bits, your Php70 is just enough for a dessert treat.

Mark 8:35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.

Many times I've tried shutting down my senses whenever I heed the call. I am just not used to being commanded or controlled. I had things done my own way. I had most of my problems all sorted out by myself. I've managed life alone, or so I thought.

I was dismissing the very reason for my success and I only acknowledge the presence whenever it's against. I find it iffy to follow if I think it doesn't makes sense.

Ironically, this blog was created for that very purpose. I was pushed to, I thought, yet I benefited from the intrusion.

But I was not bold enough. I hid between my words. In silence I ascribe the very reason I am writing.

And then suddenly I realized the promises are coming into fruition. The questions have been answered, coupled with encouragement and comfort. In awe, I am embracing it. After all, who am I to say No to whom who've responded Yes to all of my prayers.

This blog is just one of His tools, and I am glad He recognizes my love for words. Thank you for this blog. Thank you for giving me my identity.

Lose Yourself

He gripped hard on his pillow as if holding on from being dragged. His eyes were closed yet it seemed like his vision's as clear as the noon's time. He's fully covered yet he felt he's been stripped off naked. On that night the darkness was blatantly exposing his fear, and he has welcomed it.

He validates his mind was being played. He's never been questioned of his identity more than now. Flashbacks were defining him. Details of his defiance and escapades were as real as the coldness of his room. It was a bold attempt. If he lose now, he's going to lose forever.

But he was delirious to know it's happening. Finally, he let go of his grip and allowed the thought to expose the truth. He opened his eyes and allowed himself to cry. He took off the sheets and allowed the air to amend the numbness of his heart. It was the greatest fear he has ever felt. On that night he was convinced that he's loved.

I remember I was in Grade 3 when I last made an official donation. Much like how commiserable I was at that time for the typhoon's victims, I pitied myself having been able to share only a can of sardines, a can of about-to-expire imported corned beef and two pieces of old clothing (one almost-ripped sando and one loose shirt). I was even scolded by my lola for taking the corned beef without her permission -- that's what you get for procrastinating on your assignments.

That is why I got so excited to finally extend a good amount of help to the victims of Sendong in Mindanao. Some of my friend's extended family members were victims of the typhoon, but instead of asking for help solely for them, they opted to stretch out their blessings to more families in their hometown. I originally was about to share mine to her but the meeting time was in conflict with my shift. Good thing, though, our company was collecting donations as well, thus I still had a chance to donate.

I was ecstatic to let go of the old yet it's a delight to know that it's one act that would bring some people a sign of hope.

Much like the magi, I am continuously amazed by the reason of the celebration. One thing I've learned this season is the fact that I won't be able to truly share the gift of love until I learn to recognize His grace, be overwhelmed by His love and be yearnful to constantly allow Him to fill my heart.

I Race for My Life

I arrived barely 10 minutes before the run. A lot more people were already at the starting point and, most probably, have done enough stretching, unlike me. Do I have to worry? Not a bit, I thought. This run, after all, is not outdo them, but to set a benchmark for myself.

I heard the queue and, with the rush of adrenaline, I wanna run ahead and create a good start. But good thing, though, I have been reminded not to exhaust myself too early in the game as this can tire me throughout the run.

It's only now that I appreciate running. I was surely driven even more seeing other people taking the same direction. I even saw some "veteran runners," and I couldn't help but be amazed that they still have that yearning to continue running. That made me think if I would have the same heart right after that day.

Middle of the run I thought of hurrying up as I don't want to catch the sun. Funny that I was afraid of the scorching heat yet I know it's all part of it. I don't want to stop yet that decision would have its share of exasperation, and that is true because our bodies are naturally weak.

I attempted to brisk walk, but to no avail. And so I walked. Just walking. I was a mocker of runners; I thought it was easy. I realized I just ate my words.

I was about to make the curve when I felt some pain on my right foot. That time I had to make a decision if I would stop or should I just allow the exercise itself to cure the pain. I chose the latter, and I trust that running would ease the muscles.

I was already ahead of most people but I still I tend to stop more so often. Too much exhaustion, too much sweat, some pain, some stops -- all the same routine but definitely no stopping. No stopping. That time I was meeting more people halfway; some taking the 3K run now about to make that curve towards the finish line and some were still starting their own run.

More excitement rushed in when I was about to reach the finish line. No looking back. In no time I see myself conquering an important goal. Indeed that day marked a victorious day.

That achievement has grounded my heart. That burned a desire to beat a record for the next run. I will continue to join these enthusiasts who sees each run as a journey towards a lifelong fulfillment.

Where is home?

I have been busy looking, thus it has almost been two months since I last blogged. I thought I did enough to finally get a home, but this season has instead tested that very lifelong desire of mine. Am I making the right decisions? Am I taking the right direction? Indeed I questioned -- and not just the fact that I'm still as transient as before, but I questioned the very essence of why I had dreamed of having a home.

So much has been revealed since that victorious day, but I have to admit the heart is still in the process of mending, and that I am still constantly asking. I am asking to the point that I again started questioning and, worse, rant about all that's happening.

Is it just because the schedule has not been followed? I couldn't care less, actually, but the fact that I know I'm bumping into a lot of people because of choosing a different path, I could feel the pain of every contact.

The fact it, Webster will still define home as a place, a residence, a dwelling, and not a heart's condition. It's sad because while I am trying to remind myself that the essence of home is not "where" but it's with "whom," the latter could still not satisfy the void. The fact it, family has never been defined in my life.

And so I wrestle with Him. I cried. I pray. But the haunting continues. The heart is continuously being bruised. I bump, I learn, I collide, I hurt and I continue to long. I continue to desire. In fact, I will continue to desire. I don't understand it but I will still believe. When He removed that one last bit that I thought was making me sane, I was actually even happier, and I know I would still continue to live and to dream. What He guaranteed was my purpose, and I know it's enough to still build my home.

Thank you for the reminder via Isaiah 26:4-8:

I was about to wrap up my Taal tour upon visiting the Villavicencio houses when the lady caretaker informed me of the newly re-opened Galleria Taal. It was just a walk straight ahead from the house (along Agoncillo St.) so I gave it a shot anyway, and I was just so glad I did.

Galleria Taal was used to be the ancestral house of familia Ylagan-Barrion. Candida Barrion, the third child of original owners Domingo Ylagan and Maria Martinez-Ylagan, paid off her siblings so her own family can reside in the house. After her death in 1975, the house fell in disrepair till 2004 when her grandchild Emmanuel "Manny" Inumerable initiated its restoration.

It was only in March 2010 that the house was formally opened as an exhibition venue of antique cameras and some antiquarian Philippine photographs. What amazed me was the fact that all of the vintage cameras are owned by Mr. Manny Inumerable himself.

The vast collection is composed of rare cameras from the late 1800's to 1900's. I was so overwhelmed of such number that I almost nearly did not notice the rare photos that are on display as well. The photos depict the early Philippine photography in the Spanish and American era and even some during the Japanese occupation, Marcos era and EDSA revolution. Sadly, I was so consumed over the cameras that I failed to take some shots of these rare photo gems. Instead, I opted to pose with some of the camera collection (thanks to the lady caretaker who even teased me, saying I look like Coco Martin. LOL!).

Ironically, my camera wasn't as sophisticated as any on display so most of the shots did not turn out well. Nevertheless, at least most of my favorites had good quality captures:

I've always declared myself a proud Batangueño and so I felt the obligation to discover the Balisong Capital of the Philippines. And finally it happened when I came to visit the Taal Town.

Balisong, which is also referred to as butterfly knife or fan knife, is distinct as to how its knife blade can be brought to bear quickly using one hand. I remember being taught how to manipulate a balisong but I had long forgotten to use the skill.

At first I thought the balisong stores are actually within the heritage town that's why it surprised me to know that there's a Brgy. Balisong that specializes on this unique type of knife.

An array of countless balisongs of different shapes and sizes, including other types of knives, are displayed on every store located just by the road. There are no gimmicks to entice a tourist into buying, unless you ask a manong to demonstrate using a balisong.

I honestly wished they could have designed a more "touristy" Brgy. Balisong. The whole experience was less than a 15-minute walk and I had to simply decide whether to buy or not. Since I'm not comfortable keeping sharp-pointed objects in my bag, I just settled for a 3-for-100 key-chain balisongs made from tanso (copper).

Viva - (adj.) living, enjoying life, active; (int.) hurray!

A well-deserved description indeed! Villavicencio's heritage houses at 33 Marella Street in Taal, Batangas is probably one of the most popular destinations in the town. The pre-1850 ancestral house was the abode of Gliceria Marella de Villavivencio or "Aling Eriang." Aptly referred to as the "Forgotten Heroine of the Philippine Revolution," she and her husband Eulalio Villavicencio contributed a great part of their fortune to help the revolutionary forces against Spain.

Aling Eriang donated the family ship, the "SS Bulusan" which was purchased in 1893 and it was the first warship of the Revolutionary Government.

Thanks to the massive restoration effort of their fourth generation descendant and great grandson Ernesto "Ernie" Fajardo Villavicencio, the Gliceria Marella House still stand erect and thus, in its own way, able to narrate a part of history unknown to many of us. In the main sala (salon), portraits of Eulalio and Gliceria done by Juan Luna, still hang.

The house became a secret meeting place of some Katipuneros, who would at that time disguise as sabungeros (cockfighters), like Andres Bonifacio, Feliciano Jocson, Felipe Calderon and Miguel Malvar. In fact, in their dining area, a secret exit door was even constructed. It's obviously where the Katipuneros would run and hide just in case the Spaniards would try to investigate.

Also known as bahay na bato, the house was also made of original Philippine hardwoods such as narra, ipil and molave. The house still has the well-preserved canvass trompe l’oeil walls done in the early 1900's by an artist named Alvero (restored in 1997 by PASCON) and the original tin ceiling (originally white but was re-painted as black) on which the materials were purchased from Belgium. The bedrooms, on the other hand, were filled with delicate memorabilia and some ancestor’s photos while the kusina (dirty kitchen) somehow reminds me of our own old house in Lipa City.

Aside from the main house, Eulalio built another house beside it (which was previously connected by a covered bridge). It was his wedding gift to his beloved Gliceria Marella, thus it became known as the "Gift House" or specifically the "Wedding Gift House." Some has fondly called it as the "Goldilocks House," because of its colorful facade, which was the result of its restoration.

In a blog detailing some excerpts on her life, in January 1892, Gliceria and Eulalio (who even went to Hongkong) gave Dr. Jose Rizal Php18,000 to finance some of his subversive writings like Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, La Solidaridad and the by-laws of La Liga Filipina. Some original copies are even kept on the house's entresuelo (mezzanine).

By just donating Php50 you can enter these houses and be amazed at the preserved past that Taal has. I was blessed to have been able to enter these houses since, in most cases, you ought to be part of Taal Heritage Tour (usually organized for students) before you can do so. Good thing when I pass by the "Gift House" it was being cleaned, thus I was able to ask. The Villavicencio house, on the other hand, was being set up for a TV shoot and so I was also able to inquire.

But there are actually more heritage houses and structures you can visit such as the Goco Ancestral House and Ylagan-Dela Rosa Ancestral House. There's also Don Leon Apacible House, which unfortunately I missed out during the trip.

I was about to go home when, alas, Mang Domeng, the caretaker of Gregorio Agoncillo Mansion, confirmed that I can enter and take some pictures of the heritage site. Unfortunately, though, I run out of battery and was not able to take enough pictures.

The mere number of heritage houses tells us much of what Taal has to offer. The town itself is treated like a big museum, and Familia Villavicencio is at the forefront of heritage advocacy and tourism efforts to continuosly maintain the beautiful history of Taal Town.

The Heritage of Taal.

My tour of Taal Town last July 15-16 was surely an eye-opener of a heritage unknown to many of us. It is listed as a heritage landmark by the National Historical Institute, much like Vigan. Unlike Vigan, though, the whole town is in itself a well-preserved Spanish Colonial Town and walking around it brought me a reminiscent of a rich cultural past that we've learned only through the books.

At the center of the town is Basilica de San Martin de Tours or commonly known as Taal Basilica, said to be Asia's biggest Catholic Church.

Aside from Taal Basilica, the town is almost surrounded by other Spanish religious influences like the Our Lady of Caysasay Shrine and San lorenzo Ruiz Steps, which I counted has 122 steps.

But probably one of the highlights of my trip to these structures was the view deck of the whole Taal Town via Taal Basilica. You just need to give a donation of Php50 to do this. I'd have to say it did freak me out when I ought to take the dark narrow stairs going up the top of the church. It's lighted, yes, but at one point it was really dark because one bulb was pundido (burnt out). I was taking pictures not just to document but to also aid me going up and down!

Nevertheless, it was all worth it after seeing the whole view of the town. You can even see a glimpse of Taal Lake from the view deck.

Once you're done with this activity, you might want to take a rest at Taal Park. It gives you a view of the church, plus it was really well shaded by trees.

Nevertheless, it was still worth it as the stroll did provide me so much eye enjoyment. Government and business structures were actually required to have an old design so as to make sure the town keeps its heritage feel.

Tour de Taal Town

My two-month vacation is almost over and so I thought I had to make a trip somewhere before I start on my new job. As I ought to still save some of my backpay money for my condo, I had to make sure the tour will be less than a 5K budget. And since I owe some obligations to my relatives in Lipa City, I figured out I'll just travel within my own province of Batangas.

Since I am not a beach bum (and that summer is really over despite the heat), I thought of one place where I can just walkabout and simply appreciate the sights. Only one place come to mind -- the Town of Taal!

Yes, I am a proud Batangueño, but I honestly had no idea what to expect and even how to go to Taal! It's one reason as well why I would like to start off traveling again within my own backyard. Thanks to Lakwatsera de Primera, Pinoy Adventurista, Ferdz Decena and Ivan Henares, I was able to create my itinerary for the trip!

Jeepneys (and buses) going to Lemery pass by the Heritage Town of Taal. From Lipa, the jeep ride only cost me Php47. I reserved a Php1,000 room at Casa Punzalan, on which I would like to thank Pinoy Adventurista for this tip! Though they have rooms for Php600 only, I opted to take an air-conditioned room because of the current heat (hehehe...).

Not many tourists are visiting the place when I was there (and I thought I was the only guest of the hotel till I saw two travelers checking out the next day) and so I kind of felt eerie during my stay (hehehe...). I guess that's the effect of sleeping in old houses like this. No, I have no scary stories to share but more of admiración towards the experience.

This is supposedly a one-post story but as I was circuiting the town, the beauty of its heritage inspired me to create a special story arc for Taal (and making this made me realized I should have listened to my Spanish classes during college):

Harry Potter's Guide on Achieving Victory over Voldemort

Movies are especially designed to lull our imagination, prompting us to wish for scenes to befall as actual personal moments. Ever experienced times wherein you and your friends would stay silent after exiting the movie house? That's due to "movie hangover."

Excited for Harry Potter 7 Part 2

Expectantly, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 also brought me some sense of association. In the hope of waking a dead man, Harry Potter taught and reminded me of the following top tips:

1. Destroy all hocruxes. Ditch the things that remind you of your past or probably the ones that keep you from moving on. It will take too much effort -- Harry, Ron and Hermione even rode a dragon just to obtain Helga Hufflepuff's Cup. Don't fret; the beauty of it is it'll give you lessons along the way.

2. Create your own Order of the Phoenix. Befriend people who can rebuild and rebuke. Yes, people who can help you create a good sense of yourself and at the same time remind you of avoiding the same mistakes again. And of course, they must be willing to fight for and with you as well.

3. Get mentoring. Harry would not be a good wizard without Dumbledore and the rest of his Hogwarts professors. Good advices come from those who have experienced the same.

4. Resist the whispers. Harry was at his most vulnerable state when he would allow Voldemort's advances. You and I know the feeling. The only difference, though, is Harry can't sometimes control his own villain but, in our case, we can.

5. Die and live again. There's a reason for feeling good after getting a new hairdo. It's a declaration that you've initiated a change. It's time to face your enemy and declare victory. Harry did not really die because he actually willingly faced death. Can we be as bold as Harry, willing to sacrifice our old life to achieve a brand new one?

Despite magic as the movie's main appeal, these points do not need wizardry to operate. Life itself is full of magic; it is designed for us to use our wand of faith.

How to Awaken a Dead Man

For some reason he found it funny to flick on his cousin's ears. He was giggling as he stared at his target's irritated face. "He's sleeping so he couldn't fight back. It's a chance to bully," he thought. He was enjoying the moment when, all of a sudden, his cousin's mother saw what he was doing and she eventually stormed out on him. It was family siesta time so the rest of his relatives were made known of the act and everyone came to a conclusion that he became very cruel at that time.

As it was the norm when a kid would made a mistake, they shouted at him and, as he was trying to defend himself, they voted to throw him out of the house as a punishment.

"This is injustice." he thought, so he screamed "Di na kayo naawa sa bata! (You did not even show any pity to a kid like me!). All the while he thought that would convince them to allow him a re-entrance, but lo and behold, to make matters worse, he heard and saw their neighbors laughing at him because of too much drama.

It was as if the camera zoomed in on his face, marking a big blow that has since robbed his whole self. He felt Rejection. And that was what deeply wounded his heart.

That was how I became brokenhearted, and that was John Eldredge's target -- aimed to provide healing and restoration -- on his book Waking the Dead: The Glory of a Heart Fully Alive.

The glory of God is a man fully alive. The heart of his book simply connotes the fact that "His happiness and my (our) happiness are tied together." The heart is good; our hearts are good; it's just that the glory was robbed on us. The book opened me to the fact that indeed there's a cure to "brokenheartedness." But what made me cry with joy was knowing that I am actually in the process of medication. I've completed the story above as inspired by Eldredge's examples.

Ever thought why all of us are enamored at myths and fairy tales? It's because "proposition (logic) speaks to the mind, but when you tell a story, you speak to the heart." That's why the Bible have parables.

I used to equate myself to Nelo of Dog of Flanders (Nelo and Patrasche, for those who grew up watching ABS-CBN's morning cartoon). Though I am not into dogs, I have liken the drama and I thought I would die alone. Tragic for a kid to think like that. But then I was reminded of my favorite Disney movie of all time, Aladdin, a character more lively and, though orphaned, still pursued and aimed high. In his book, Eldredge masterfully allowed us to imagine ourselves as Frodo or Neo, Cinderella or Dorothy so that we may image their hearts to ours.

Eldredge shares Christian professor Rolland Hein's description: "Myths are, first of all, stories: stories which confront us with something transcendent and eternal... a means by which the eternal expresses itself in time."

But why is it that bitterness would struck us yet again, despite knowing or -- more appropriately -- thinking that we have actually moved on? Most probably the heart is again being attacked. Wondered why "something inside" is compelling you to do things you do not want to do? Eldredge states that it "indicates a broken heart," and the "actions (we do) are attempts to nurse or repair a rift in the soul." Eldredge is clear on his point that we usually mishandle these wounds in our heart: "We push them down. Or we turn to something or someone we hope will bring comfort, like food or sex."

I was shot right into the core. After a deed, I would usually feel unclean, unworthy, bad. The worse thing is it manifests on other areas of my life. When I would try to court a girl, I would hear whispers: You're not good enough for her. She will soon discover that and she will eventually reject you. And so I thought I have to always improve myself, get training so I can be desirable for girls. And now even on my ministry I saw little of myself.

I was wrong. The book emphasized much on telling everyone that our hearts are good. But why do we feel like the whole thing is just going on circles? It's because the heart is always being attacked. It is why Eldredge asks us to ponder on John 10:10:

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

All this time I wondered why life gets even harder when I became a Christian. Reading the book revealed to me the fact that I have to battle for my heart -- for its glory. But I am not alone. Jesus is ransoming my heart through -- on which the book focused on -- the Four Streams: Discipleship, Counseling, Healing and Warfare.

I did mention earlier that I am in the middle of medication. It's because I met people who are more than willing to disciple me. For the first time, I've learned to share my old life as if as I was being counseled. Though patching up the wounds is not easy, I feel strength through the fellowship I have forged. I am ready. I can battle the enemy to keep my heart's glory. And so I believe, via Isaiah 60:1-2:

¹ “Arise, shine, for your light has come,
   and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.
² See, darkness covers the earth
   and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the LORD rises upon you
   and his glory appears over you.

On the same day I finished the book, we sang this song in church:

Glory restored. Thank you, Lord.
