What is Rattan/Cane/Wicker?
Have you been wondering what is the difference between rattan, cane and wicker? Well here is a brief rundown.
Rattan is a type of palm with over 600 species, found predominantly in South East Asia, Africa and Australasia. Unlike palm trees that we see around QLD the rattan palm has a vine like nature, climbing in the undergrowth of the rainforest.
The rattan palm is harvested, and the outer paper like bark removed. The stems are then left to dry in the sun. Once dried, seasoned and graded these stems become the cylindrical structure used in the creation of rattan furniture.
Cane is actually the paper like bark layer that is removed from the rattan stalks. This thin product is then sliced into strips perfect for creating woven products such as seat and chair backs or cupboard door inlays.
The term Wicker a refers to the process of weaving materials, such as rattan and cane, into a finished product. Therefore the term wicker can refer to a broader range of products constructed of various materials.
A History of Wicker Furniture
The creation of wicker can be traced as far back as the Ancient Egyptians who used reeds growing on the side of the Nile to weave into wicker baskets. While intricately woven wicker furniture was reserved for the elite class.
The use of rattan and cane in wicker furniture is a little harder to trace, however it is thought to have appeared in China in the 15th Century. The use of rattan and cane continued to grow in appeal as a light weight, strong and durable material predominantly used in chair seats and backs, storage, luggage and decorative woven pieces.
It was not until the mid 1800's that an American business man names Cyrus Wakefield unlocked the full potential of using rattan as the structural element in furniture. He build an entire industry out of crafting rattan and cane furniture which was the origin of the rattan furniture we see today.
So every piece of wicker furniture we see today is a result of thousands of years of innovation and history.
Kubu Rattan
Kubu rattan is a particular species of rattan that when dried becomes a light beige colour. After drying, the rattan is then stained with mud to achieve the unique grey brown colour known as Kubu Grey.
Kubu rattan is commonly associated with a tightly woven enclosed base chair style, like our Kubu Chair, however this type of rattan can be used for many other furniture styles.
The Future of Rattan
While rattan furniture never really left us, it was relegated to the patio. Now with a new look and a modern make over rattan has definitely cemented its location in every room of the house, creating a light and breezy atmosphere perfect for our South East Queensland location.

"So where does this recycled pine come from?" I hear you ask. Well here is a little back ground on our recycled pine furniture.
The recycled pine used to create our furniture is sources from old wooden houses, set to be demolished, in china. These house are completely disassembled piece by pieces and the timber collected in storage yards for repurposing.
Upon reaching the factory the timber undergoes a fumigation process to ensure no unwanted pests remain, before being cut to size and crafted into furniture.
And this brings us to the part we love the most about the recycled timber process. Because of the nature of the timber collected each and every pieces is full of character and history bring and rich and unique look to each and every pieces of furniture.
By endorsing sustainable utilization of resources within our furniture we are able to protect the environment as well as provide a completely unique pieces of furniture to each customer. Featuring our 1100 wide Parisienne Dining table and Motif chairs setting, complimented by our Belle writing desk and bedside table, styled in an entirely unique way, this set the scene for a luxurious and romantic elopement reception.
Set amongst the Olive Groves of Sarabah Estate Winery in the Gold Coast hinterland the shoot brought together a group of both South East Queensland and Australian wide professionals.

Do you know that it is recommended that all furniture that can be climbed on or that is greater than 600 in height should be fixed to the wall?? I am sure for many this is a shock. How many of us have buffets, and storage units, tall boys and display shelves around our homes and we never think twice about the danger these pieces present to our families.
According to the ACCC hundreds of serious injuries and two deaths each year are attributed to toppling furniture and televisions. Everyone with children knows how accidents can happen in the blink of an eye but with some simple steps you can take action and ensure your home is safe from toppling furniture and ensure your family and friends remain safe at all times within your home.
Here at Brisbane Furniture your safety is our highest priority, therefore all of our storage units come complete with wall anchor kits to fix your furniture to the wall. With a few different variations available wall anchor kits generally consist of two mounting plates, one fixed to the rear of the furniture and the other fixed to the wall behind, the plates are then joined but a strap (similar to a zip tie) and tightened to ensure your furniture is safely fixed to the wall and prevent toppling.

As well as securing your furniture it is also essential to secure your TV to the wall. TV’s often come with a mounting point on the rear of the screen, with a similar style mounting kit available consisting of the wall mount plate and strap to secure the screen back to the wall. Securing TV screens is particularly important if the screen is placed on top of a tall unit such as a tall boy.
Another simple tip to ensure safety in your home is to ensure anything heavy is stored at low heights. As well as helping to lower the centre of gravity of your furniture to reduce the chance of tipping it also means that heavy items can not be wobbled/shaken off high shelves and land on children below.
If your little one is a bit of a climber it is also important to ensure all low level drawers are fixed closed. Often the allure of a toy placed on top of chest of drawers can prove too much and it is easy to pull out low level drawers to create your own ladder. This can pose a significant risk. With the drawers pulled out a furniture pieces centre of gravity has already shifted to a forward position. With the added weight of a child climbing on the drawers the risk of toppling is greatly increased. We therefore recommend increased safety measure such as drawer lock or catches (also available from Bunnings, Target, Big W or baby shops) to the lower drawers of storage units.

We all love beautiful timber furniture but who can afford to deck out the house in one go? We're not talking about IKEA furniture here! And no matter how hard you try, you can never match those timber colours down the track. Well luckily for you mixing and matching your timber furniture is not as difficult as you might think.
In fact, according to apartmenttherapy.com "match-y match-y floors and furniture look staid and flat" and are a thing of the past, so your set of random timber piece could be the start of a stylish, contemporary timber furniture collection.
Now you have finished rejoicing about this fantastic news there are a few guidelines to make sure all your pieces are looking great together.
Keep to one timber tone.
You want to stay with either warm or cool timber tones throughout your pieces. So if you already have a few pieces with warm undertones then make sure you stay with warm timbers. If you have some of the natural grey timbers then stay with the cool tone when looking for new additions.
A white accent colour works with both the warm and cool options and adds a great contrast to the timber tones.
Use a max 3 colours per space.
Multiple colours is all good but you don't want to go overboard and have things looking 'bitsy'. Stick to maximum of three timber colours throughout to make sure everything is harmonious and working together.
Reinforce colours with accent pieces
To help reinforce the mixed timber look, use accent pieces such as mirrors, frames and décor pieces. We are more than half way through spring and Christmas is fast approaching! We all know what this means, time to give the house one thorough clean and polish before we can go out and enjoy another beautiful Brisbane summer, but what are the best techniques to keep your timber furniture looking fabulous.
Here are our favourite timber tips:-
Cleaning Product Selection
Make sure you are using the right products on your timber furniture. Never use harsh products like, bleach, ammonia or jiff when cleaning your timber furniture.
Abrasive products are sure to leave scratches in your timber polish and alkaline products will just leave you with no polish at all!
A duster and damp soapy cloth is all you need to clean your timber furniture.
Timber Polish
It's a great idea to polish your timber once a year to restore moisture and shine to the timber but be prepared for a bit of elbow grease.
A quality timber bees wax will help restore your polished timber furniture. Apply with a soft lint free cloth in the direction of the grain and ensure to continue polishing until all the wax has been completely absorbed to ensure no milky residue is left behind.
A timber oil can be used to preserve your outdoor furniture for years to come.
Removing Sticky Marks
All parents have experienced the delight of finding stickers plastered all over the timber furniture! Sometimes these can be easily removed others can leave a nasty sticky residue.
To remove the residue without effecting your timber polish use a small amount of tea tree oil on a cotton bud and gently rub over the residue. The tea tree oil will help dissolve the residue and wipe with a clean cloth to remove the remnants. If your first attempt doesn't remove it all then repeat the process until all the residue has been gently removed.
White Cup Rings
Finding white cup rings on your furniture can be horrifying but taking advice from the team at "This Old House" http://www.thisoldhouse.com/how-to/how-to-fix-furniture-finish it seems moisture rings are not as big a deal as we all think.
Using a clean cloth with a light misting of Mentholated Spirits gently work over the surface until the white ring disappears. Ensure to be very careful with the amount of product you use to ensure you do not dull the polish.
Heat Damage
Similar to the white cup rings finding heat damage to your timber furniture can be devastating as we recently found out. And unfortunately repairing this damage can be a lot harder.
For only minor damage as seen in our before and after pictures below we were able to repair the surface with an application of quality bee's wax worked into the surface however for more extensive damage you may need to consult a restoration specialist or have the piece refinished.
