The Necks

Legendary improvisers, The Necks, have a worldwide following, but they return in 2010 as they do every year to honour their Australian roots.

Not entirely ambient, nor minimalist, nor jazz, The Necks create a music that is unique in the world today. Since their beginnings nearly 23 years ago, they have continued to craft an immersive, hypnotic, ritual-like concert experience that allows the listener to perceive the very fundamentals of music in a completely new light. As The Guardian (UK) said: “The Necks can find eternity in a grain of sand.” Their completely improvised concerts on acoustic piano, bass and drums have the room ringing with sound and the audience utterly mesmerized. A performance by The Necks is a transcendent, unrepeatable trip.

"...Entirely new and entirely now...They produce a post-jazz, post-rock, post-everything sonic experience that has few parallels or rivals. They may teach us to listen in a new way, but they communicate a fierce energy and warmth at the same time. Their music is a thrilling, emotional journey into the unknown. Like seeing a world in a grain of sand, The Necks permit us to hear a whole new world of music in a sliver of sound" THE GUARDIAN (UK)

"...transports the listener into an almost mystical state...sound journeys whose route led us not only through meditative valleys but also into loud, cacophonic mountains of sound, to die away on sleepy tonal beaches" TAZ BREMEN (BREMEN, GERMANY)

"a brilliant mix of the calculated and the spontaneous, which under constant fire develops an almost hypnotic effect that one cannot resist.. As a painter fills the screen with colour, so The Necks layer their music together. The individual processes pile up on top of each other, until after an hour's playing time- everything collapses, glowing in magnificent noise. Such a powerful demonstration of musical confidence has not been heard in a long time" DER TAGESPIEGEL (BERLIN, GERMANY)

On sale Monday 9th November 9am

It's so cliche.. and I hate being one, but I'm infatuated. Like most things you fall in love with, Australia is sexy, distant and unavailable and I sit here in Ireland having a long distance relationship with you.

Comedian Des Bishop is a bona fide celebrity in his adopted home in Ireland and is now ready to embark on his first ever national stand up tour of Australia. Follow Des as he masters his acerbic observations on life in Australia - sure to uncover many parts of our own identity we don't even know ourselves.

"One of the finest performers at this year's festival. Fast paced and clever. A sure fire winner" Sunday Age

"Funny, erudite and effortlessly delivered. ****" The Scotsman UK

Jason Byrne

Direct from a massive UK tour, Irish megastar Jason Byrne returns to Australia after a groundbreaking year, seeing him become the highest selling act at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Don't miss the hit of the Melbourne Comedy Festival perform in Brisbane for the very first time - and for 3 shows only.

“Byrne is consistently brilliant. This means that seeing him guarantees the following: an aching face, sore stomach muscles and, at some point, the realisation that to rock with laughter is not just a cliché. If you've seen him once, just saying or hearing his name makes you laugh out loud”. ***** THE METRO, UK

“Guaranteed laughs that will rip you apart like a tornado” The Times, UK

"The show bulges with raucous laughs. A joy from start to finish." The Age, Melbourne

“He's shouty and sweary...and he's got the routines to match the hurricane energy." The Independent, UK

Brisbane Premiere - one night only!!

John Waters’ one-man show is a “vaudeville” act that celebrates the film career and obsessional tastes of the man William Burroughs once called “The Pope of Trash.”

Focusing in on Waters’ early negative artistic influences and his fascination with true crime, exploitation films, fashion lunacy, and the extremes of the contemporary art world, this joyously devious monologue elevates all that is trashy in life into a call to arms to “filth followers” everywhere.

Cat Power

New Years Eve Event!

The enigmatic Cat Power returns to Australia this summer backed by Dirty Delta Blues, the same band that accompanied her on the sold out national tour of March 2008 and who feature the talents of Jim White (Dirty Three) and Judah Bauer (Blues Explosion).

Most recently Cat Power has toured the USA with The Pretenders, visited South America and released Dark End of the Street, a six-track double gatefold 10" and digi-pack taken from the same recording sessions as her last album, Jukebox. Following the Australian dates, Cat Power will visit Singapore for the first time followed by her second ever visit to Japan and the first with her band.

After nearly two hours, Marshall closes the set by staying on stage, imitating Australian accents and handing out flowers to various members of the crowd. No encore is necessary ... it’s really difficult to fault a performance as emotional and sincere as the one that The Tivoli’s audience experienced tonight. Let’s hope to see Cat Power in Australia again sooner rather than later. www.fasterlouder.com

The Middle East 9.30pm - 10.15pm

Deva Premal and Miten have been touring the world together and playing music for 20 years. They first met in India at an ashram and their music grew out of their love of their guru, and their experience of meditation at the ashram.

Music and mantra is Deva Premal and Miten’s gift to the world and is supported by a simple yet elegant vision…everybody with a voice can sing, and everyone with a breath in their body can experience their divinity.

Tony Award-winner Alan Cumming comes to Brisbane for the first time and for one night only with his deliciously naughty cabaret show I Bought A Blue Car Today.

In a warm and charming mix of song, banter and showbiz anecdote, the star of stage and screen will be accompanied by a cellist and musical director Lance Horne on piano.

Full of moving songs about moving on, he will muse over the last 10 years of his life in America. From Dolly Parton and Elton John to Mika and Garfunkel, Cumming will interpret what he calls “the queer songbook” – Broadway tunes and popular songs mixed up with camp conversation and storytelling.

“Pure, undiluted entertainment…a fusion of passion and cheekiness that is utterly magnetic” The Daily Telegraph

“an innately likeable natural comedian and raconteur…a wonderful role model for the art of engaging an audience” Sydney Morning Herald

Please note: this event is recommended for ages 18+.

On November 22, Henri Padovani, one of the original members of The Police and a force in London's punk scene during the 1970s and 1980s will be appearing at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

London 1976: The punk movement came to life at a time when social protest was at its height, a time when the rebellious youth sought a different future than the prevailing sterile artistic and cultural context would have dictated. The movement involved all imaginable forms of rebellion, but music quickly became its chief manifestation. It was against this social backdrop that the young Corsican Henry Padovani first arrived in England. His two-week vacation turned into a seven-year sojourn as the novice musician discovered an entirely new world, whose fresh philosophy he quickly and instinctively adopted.

With the recent documentary of his life and work, Rock'n Roll of Corse, many have rediscovered this great guitarist and unique character who was known to many as "The Corsican" as he featured in the London music scene.

This event will be comprised of a film screening + Q & A session, followed by a concert at 8pm

Please note: this event is suitable for 18+ audiences only

Far from the sensory-overload of much contemporary performance, Scattered Tacks leads audiences into an anarchic and absurd vision of circus.

Award winning Adelaide trio (Terri Cat Silvertree, Aelx Gellmann and Skye Gellmann) take us back to the very essence of the circus; the circus behind the popcorn, the frills and the grand gestures.

Let yourself be enchanted by a heart-warming, anarchistic and brazenly physical performance full of tender moments and poignant images. No roaring spectacle but rather small greatness. Or great smallness of course...

Unique and inventive explorations include disorientating bowling balls, human pyramids, and an assortment of razor sharp carpet tacks!

“A truly astonishing experience… It's not sideshow shock or big-top spectacle. But it is, frankly, brilliant.” The Sunday Age.

“Unlike anything you’ve seen before, ever.” Buzzcuts

The Idea of North: A touch of Christmas

The Idea of North wrap up another year of amazing musical performances!

Their 2009 highlights included performances The Adelaide Fringe Festival, The Noosa Longweekend Festival, York Jazz & Soul Festival, concerts with Finnish singing sensations Rajaton and a recording collaboration with Australian jazz great, James Morrison!

This will be their final appearance at the Powerhouse for the year so come and be treated to a concert of sublime a cappella singing, wonderfully strung together with a genuine Australian charm that will leave you wanting more.

With Christmas just around the corner why not make this an end of year Christmas party with group bookings of only $20 a ticket. There will even be some Christmas songs thrown in especially for the festive season but they promise they won’t overdo it - just a touch of Christmas!

"In terms of quality of ensemble and elegance of arrangements, this group's work is in the same league as that of The Swingle Singers in their heyday. On top of that, they incorporate a wry, deadpan Australian sense of humour… immensely entertaining." Sydney Morning Herald

"...an impeccable standard of musicianship..." The Melbourne Age

"In a country built on pulsating pub rock, the international success of an a capella quartet is simply the makings of a legend." Illawarra Mercury

Australia's premiere taiko drumming group TaikOz, most eclectic new music ensemble Topology, and virtuosic percussion duo Karak, join forces in this energetic performance.

TaikOz, Topology and Karak share the desire to both push boundaries and enthrall audiences. They all write and perform their own music as well as that of other composers, and are adept at improvisation and working in a variety of locations. Sound on Sound features new works composed by members of each ensemble as well as a world premiere by renowned WA composer David Pye.

Combining the dramatic theatricality of TaikOz, the ethereal tones of Riley Lee’s bamboo shakuhachi, the colour and energy of Topology’s piano, bass, saxophone, violin and viola, and Karak’s percussive brilliance, Sound on Sound is a performance not to be missed!

Topology is a Brisbane Powerhouse Artist in Residence.

Wholphin - Rare and Unseen Films

The Wholphin short film series brings some of the best international short films, animations and documentaries to Brisbane - for free!

The McSweeney’s DVD magazine is now a bi-monthly Brisbane Powerhouse film event, lovingly curated with some of the best short movies, documentaries and uncategorisable films.

The December screening of Wholphin will satisfy the most contrary of film critics with its haphazard mix of short film delights from across the globe. This month’s films include a documentary exploring autism from the animators of Waking Life, an incredibly close look at the sun in its most inactive and gorgeous state and “The Popcorn Effect” of trap-jaw ants. Not to mention work from new talent like Jonas Odell and the unknown pain inflicted on innocent, naïve and wholly unaware bubblewrap. Be sure not to miss this bistro of bizarre short film delicacies. If it’s rare or unseen, it’s at Wholphin.

Curated by Dominic Jarvis and Claire Ogden.

“An eclectic but irresistible hodgepodge of cultural ephemera” Rolling Stone Magazine

“A perfect balance between political, social and outright attention-grabbing films” Short Ends Magazine

“Features a wealth of rarely seen gems” Documentary Magazine

Wholphin Series has R18+ Classification. Material classified R18+ is legally restricted to adults. Contains adult themes and coarse language.

After six years of Balkan gypsy rhythms that border on the diabolical, the musical madness of the Doch Gypsy Orchestra draws to a close this November.

With big-band wedding music, rousing Serbian anthems, Russian tavern songs and joyful orchestrated chaos, Doch and 20 of their closest friends will celebrate their final season.

Zulya, Silvia Entcheva, Goran Maric and local father and son Gypsy - Rom music sensation Vasil & Vasilini Lolo

"…you can hear an extravagant spontaneity at work as each song flows around its themes, diverting off for the occasional solo before returning home…the violin swirls, the tuba squelches and the banjo twangs, building up to kinetic explosions of bliss over and over again…” Jody McGregor, Rave Magazine

So Frenchy So Chic

FEATURING COCOON AND MORIARTY

Every year the So Frenchy So Chic compilations invite listeners to enter the French indie scene. Two of the artists featured in the series are now set for Australia.

Cocoon is a male-female duo of Mark Daumail and Morgane Imbeaud, self described as a folk-pop version of The White Stripes. Their close harmonic, heartfelt and charming sound has been inspired by singer-songwriters from the introspective Nick Drake and Elliot Smith right up to modern ‘new folk’ such as Sufjan Stevens. This isn’t campfire happy clappy folk – just a review of their CD titles reveals a darkness in I Hate Birds and My Friends All Died In A Plane Crash.

Cocoon has truly emerged in France with gold album sales and frequent airplay, disproving the once-held theory that the French dislike their pop sung in English.

Moriarty takes its cue from the worlds of Depression era American folk and European cabaret. This stripped-back ensemble comprises four men on various acoustic instruments fronted by haunting vocals of the enigmatic Rosemary. Also singing in English and with a sound that’s been variously described as early Neil Young, folk, country, blues, jazz and even Americana, the one absolute of this mysterious group is that their sound is irresistible.

Like Cocoon, Moriarty is one of France’s best kept secrets – although not in their homeland where their album Gee Whiz But This Is A Lonesome Town has gone gold.

The So Frenchy albums have sold over 90,000 copies. Don’t miss your chance to experience it live.

Please note: Due to unforeseen circumstances, Melanie Pain, as advertised in the September - December 09 Brisbane Powerhouse Guide, will be unable to perform.

Free pre-show entertainment from 6pm on the Turbine Platform: Ewan Mckenzie Duo co-presented with BEMAC.

So Frenchy So Chic is part of Planet, the Brisbane Powerhouse dedicated world music and dance program. This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

Supported by The French Embassy and Alliance Francaise

The Pipe Manager

Created by Lisa O'Neill

A radical new solo dance theatre work by acclaimed performing artist Lisa O’Neill and her creative team.

Told through a rich hybrid of movement, illustration, narration and sound, The Pipe Manager takes a satirical look at how we draw upon our powers of creation and invention in the struggle to maintain control over our destinies both personally and globally.

This uniquely imaginative and inspiring work places the audience inside a live illustrated storybook - where the performer and characters journey their way through a foreboding landscape rich in symbolism and metaphor.

Created and directed by Lisa O’Neill working with writer Peter Berkahn, illustrator XTN, sound composer & designer Guy Webster, Lighting Designer David Walters, dramaturg Kathryn Kelly, video production company Jaxzyn, New Media Consultant Keith Armstrong and Costume Designer Glen Brown.

Lisa O’Neill is supported by MAPS for Artists, a management and producing collaboration between Brisbane Powerhouse and Metro Arts.

Extraordinarily imaginative! Highly innovative! Deeply aesthetic. I was stunned and inspired by it.’ The Pipe Manager – Audience Feedback

‘Humorous; exquisitely dark; quirky; existential; postmodern; bewildering; clarity-ping-clear; innocent; disturbing; many questions’ The Pipe Manager – Audience Feedback

‘Refreshing, absorbing. This is a new direction for exploration of pertinent issues without cruel confrontation’ The Pipe Manager – Audience Feedback

Supported by Brisbane Powerhouse.

Invoke the sounds and steps of Spain’s heart and soul, Andalusia, the birthplace of flamenco.

DALeCAÑA (to give it fire) is an explosion debuting Gerard's unique take on the flamenco tradition, with dancers trained in Seville and musicians trained in Jerez de la Frontera taking audiences to the heart of Andalucia.

Gerard Mapstone has performed around the world, studied flamenco in Jerez, in London supported flamenco greats Tomatito and Estrella Morente, and is part of the renown Doch Gypsy Orchestra. Mapstone's music is an explosion of flamenco and classical guitar culture.

The company was formed in Brisbane by Mapstone and flamenco dancers Sylvia Arroyo and Sebastian Sanchez, percussionist Will Eager and violinist Michael Patterson. Inspired as much by flamenco as by contemporary Australia, the group fuses their love of tradition with an Australian aesthetic and are sure to steal your hearts.

Arj Barker: Original Style, Bits + Pieces

‘Round these parts, folks expect good comedy, so Arj Barker is bringing nothing less than the good ol’ fashioned eye waterin’ laughs.

Australia’s adopted son of comedy is back in Brisbane with his latest tender observations mixed with hearty chunks of sarcasm and delicate slices of irony.

Barker, who won the coveted Perrier Best Newcomer Award in 1997 has firmly established himself as one of the golden boys on the international comedy circuit. He has made numerous appearances on late night talk shows, including the Letterman and Conan O'Brian shows, as well as appearing on Thank God You’re Here, Rove, Spicks & Specks and Good News Week.

Arj has just finished filming the second HBO series of Flight of the Concords in New York. Get it quick. This is world-class comedy.

“{Arj] sold every ticket last year and the year before and was the most popular comic. Australians love his warped self-deprecating humour.” The Herald Sun

“It’s a joy to spend an hour in his world” 5 StarsThe Adelaide Advertiser

Warning: This performance may contain offensive language and adult themes. Recommended for people aged 15 years and older.
