Legendary improvisers, The Necks, have a worldwide following, but they return in 2010 as they do every year to honour their Australian roots.

Not entirely ambient, nor minimalist, nor jazz, The Necks create a music that is unique in the world today. Since their beginnings nearly 23 years ago, they have continued to craft an immersive, hypnotic, ritual-like concert experience that allows the listener to perceive the very fundamentals of music in a completely new light. As The Guardian (UK) said: “The Necks can find eternity in a grain of sand.” Their completely improvised concerts on acoustic piano, bass and drums have the room ringing with sound and the audience utterly mesmerized. A performance by The Necks is a transcendent, unrepeatable trip.

New Years Eve Event!

The enigmatic Cat Power returns to Australia this summer backed by Dirty Delta Blues, the same band that accompanied her on the sold out national tour of March 2008 and who feature the talents of Jim White (Dirty Three) and Judah Bauer (Blues Explosion).

Most recently Cat Power has toured the USA with The Pretenders, visited South America and released Dark End of the Street, a six-track double gatefold 10" and digi-pack taken from the same recording sessions as her last album, Jukebox. Following the Australian dates, Cat Power will visit Singapore for the first time followed by her second ever visit to Japan and the first with her band.

After nearly two hours, Marshall closes the set by staying on stage, imitating Australian accents and handing out flowers to various members of the crowd. No encore is necessary ... it’s really difficult to fault a performance as emotional and sincere as the one that The Tivoli’s audience experienced tonight. Tony Award-winner Alan Cumming comes to Brisbane for the first time and for one night only with his deliciously naughty cabaret show I Bought A Blue Car Today.

In a warm and charming mix of song, banter and showbiz anecdote, the star of stage and screen will be accompanied by a cellist and musical director Lance Horne on piano.

Henri Padovani

On November 22, Henri Padovani, one of the original members of The Police and a force in London's punk scene during the 1970s and 1980s will be appearing at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

London 1976: The punk movement came to life at a time when social protest was at its height, a time when the rebellious youth sought a different future than the prevailing sterile artistic and cultural context would have dictated. The movement involved all imaginable forms of rebellion, but music quickly became its chief manifestation. It was against this social backdrop that the young Corsican Henry Padovani first arrived in England. His two-week vacation turned into a seven-year sojourn as the novice musician discovered an entirely new world, whose fresh philosophy he quickly and instinctively adopted.

With the recent documentary of his life and work, Rock'n Roll of Corse, many have rediscovered this great guitarist and unique character who was known to many as "The Corsican" as he featured in the London music scene.

This event will be comprised of a film screening + Q & A session, followed by a concert at 8pm

Australia's premiere taiko drumming group TaikOz, most eclectic new music ensemble Topology, and virtuosic percussion duo Karak, join forces in this energetic performance.

TaikOz, Topology and Karak share the desire to both push boundaries and enthrall audiences. They all write and perform their own music as well as that of other composers, and are adept at improvisation and working in a variety of locations. Sound on Sound features new works composed by members of each ensemble as well as a world premiere by renowned WA composer David Pye.

Combining the dramatic theatricality of TaikOz, the ethereal tones of Riley Lee’s bamboo shakuhachi, the colour and energy of Topology’s piano, bass, saxophone, violin and viola, and Karak’s percussive brilliance, Sound on Sound is a performance not to be missed!

The Wholphin short film series brings some of the best international short films, animations and documentaries to Brisbane - for free!

The McSweeney’s DVD magazine is now a bi-monthly Brisbane Powerhouse film event, lovingly curated with some of the best short movies, documentaries and uncategorisable films.

The December screening of Wholphin will satisfy the most contrary of film critics with its haphazard mix of short film delights from across the globe. This month’s films include a documentary exploring autism from the animators of Waking Life, an incredibly close look at the sun in its most inactive and gorgeous state and “The Popcorn Effect” of trap-jaw ants. Not to mention work from new talent like Jonas Odell and the unknown pain inflicted on innocent, naïve and wholly unaware bubblewrap. Be sure not to miss this bistro of bizarre short film delicacies. Raw Kibbeh - Generations of Lebanese Enterprise

Visual Art and multi media presentation focuses on the narratives of hardship and humour in the lives of the early Lebanese immigrants.

The name ‘Raw Kibbeh’ is the national dish of Lebanon. A highly seasoned minced lamb burghul and chopped onions which was served as a festive dish to honour guests. It was traditionally made by pounding meat in a marble or stone mortar with a wooden pestle. Since first stepping foot in Queensland in the 1880’s, migrants from Lebanon have introduced Queenslanders to their own style of business enterprise from hawking to haberdasheries and mezza.

Learn how to play the awe-inspiring Japanese taiko by joining the members of TaikOz in a 2-hour workshop.

Prior musical training is not a requirement – just bring your Mind, Body and Spirit.

] Learn about the music, the history and concepts behind the Art of Wadaiko (drumming)

Join Dorothy the Dinosaur – graduate of RADD (Royal Academy of Dinosaur Dancing) along with her friends Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog and Henry the Octopus, the elves Fernie and Poppie, special guest ELF-IS and of course Santa.

Children will be enchanted while they plan to bring together a special, surprise Christmas party for Dorothy. The dancing will be delightful and of course the music will be rosalicious with some wonderful Christmas cheer.

This brand new live show propelled by fun, beautiful music and dancing was written for the stage by Blue Wiggle Anthony Field.

Stencil art is a form of street art, or urban art as it is often called, which has sprung up all over the globe and become a respected art form. Urban Art Agenda brings together some of the most prolific stencil artists from around the world in a unique showcase.

So Frenchy So Chic

FEATURING COCOON AND MORIARTY

Every year the So Frenchy So Chic compilations invite listeners to enter the French indie scene. Two of the artists featured in the series are now set for Australia.

Cocoon is a male-female duo of Mark Daumail and Morgane Imbeaud, self described as a folk-pop version of The White Stripes. Their close harmonic, heartfelt and charming sound has been inspired by singer-songwriters from the introspective Nick Drake and Elliot Smith right up to modern ‘new folk’ such as Sufjan Stevens. This isn’t campfire happy clappy folk – just a review of their CD titles reveals a darkness in I Hate Birds and My Friends All Died In A Plane Crash.

Cocoon has truly emerged in France with gold album sales and frequent airplay, disproving the once-held theory that the French dislike their pop sung in English.

Moriarty takes its cue from the worlds of Depression era American folk and European cabaret. This stripped-back ensemble comprises four men on various acoustic instruments fronted by haunting vocals of the enigmatic Rosemary. Also singing in English and with a sound that’s been variously described as early Neil Young, folk, country, blues, jazz and even Americana, the one absolute of this mysterious group is that their sound is irresistible.

Like Cocoon, Moriarty is one of France’s best kept secrets – although not in their homeland where their album Gee Whiz But This Is A Lonesome Town has gone gold.

A radical new solo dance theatre work by acclaimed performing artist Lisa O’Neill and her creative team.

Told through a rich hybrid of movement, illustration, narration and sound, The Pipe Manager takes a satirical look at how we draw upon our powers of creation and invention in the struggle to maintain control over our destinies both personally and globally.

This uniquely imaginative and inspiring work places the audience inside a live illustrated storybook - where the performer and characters journey their way through a foreboding landscape rich in symbolism and metaphor.

Created and directed by Lisa O’Neill working with writer Peter Berkahn, illustrator XTN, sound composer & designer Guy Webster, Lighting Designer David Walters, dramaturg Kathryn Kelly, video production company Jaxzyn, New Media Consultant Keith Armstrong and Costume Designer Glen Brown.

Lisa O’Neill is supported by MAPS for Artists, a management and producing collaboration between Brisbane Powerhouse and Metro Arts.

The World of Women (WOW) Film Festival is a short film festival that promotes and awards the talents of women directors, producers, writers, editors and cinematographers in the Australian film industry and in Oceania. Sil-Nyin cameron, festival director 2009, will introduce each screening.

It is a unique festival that offers emerging and established filmmakers the opportunity to screen short works giving a thematic perspective of ... “seeing the world through the eyes of women”.

Gerard Mapstone and the DALeCANA Flamenco Company

Invoke the sounds and steps of Spain’s heart and soul, Andalusia, the birthplace of flamenco.

DALeCAÑA (to give it fire) is an explosion debuting Gerard's unique take on the flamenco tradition, with dancers trained in Seville and musicians trained in Jerez de la Frontera taking audiences to the heart of Andalucia.

Gerard Mapstone has performed around the world, studied flamenco in Jerez, in London supported flamenco greats Tomatito and Estrella Morente, and is part of the renown Doch Gypsy Orchestra. Mapstone's music is an explosion of flamenco and classical guitar culture.

The company was formed in Brisbane by Mapstone and flamenco dancers Sylvia Arroyo and Sebastian Sanchez, percussionist Will Eager and violinist Michael Patterson. Inspired as much by flamenco as by contemporary Australia, the group fuses their love of tradition with an Australian aesthetic and are sure to steal your hearts.
