The journey to Antarctica from Punta Arenas, Chile takes around 4.5hrs and largely depends on the unpredictable weather both in Chile and at Union Glacier. Felicity was flown in by an Ilyushin Il-76 plane which has been specially modified to land on natural blue ice runways in Antarctica.

has finally spent her first night on the ice at Union Glacier base camp after a 10 day delay due to bad weather.

We await further news for the exact date that Felicity will be flown out to her starting point at the Leverett Glacier to begin her record breaking attempt.

This winter, Stephen Venables will doing a series of talks about the father of alpinism, Eric Shipton.

One of the greatest mountain explorers of the twentieth century, Shipton was a team-member on all four Everest expeditions during the 1930’s and found the route that Hillary and Tenzing would follow to the top of the world. He famously missed out on Hillary’s historical ascent after being sacked from the expedition – his small-team, minimal logistics approach to climbing just didn’t fit with the grandiose, large-scale expedition style of the British Empire.

Instead, Shipton dedicated his life to exploring untouched mountain ranges all over the world, from the mountains of East Africa to the untouched ice-fields of Patagonia in Tierra del Fuego. Admired by explorers, and loved by women, he inspired a generation of mountaineers, including Venables, who in 1988 became the first Briton to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen.

In his lecture he will mix readings from Shipton’s books with stories of his own journeys in the explorer’s footsteps, illustrated with photography and film clips.

We are delighted to confirm that Sam McConnell has agreed to speak at Guildford Explorers on 2nd February.

Sam is a vastly experienced individual and has worked in a number of expedition roles including medic, guide, trek leader, coordinator, director and consultant. Since 1996 he has led 78 safaris in the Namib and Kalahari deserts, including spending time with the San Bushmen and other desert-dwelling people of Southern Africa; and he has led more than 100 teams in desert environments during his career.

In 2002 he walked solo and unsupported across the Dune Sea of the Namib Desert, the highest and oldest dunes in the world, from the Skeleton Coast to Dead Vlei. The subsequent documentary was broadcast on the National Geographic Channel and has been repeated worldwide. He was honoured with a fellowship at the Royal Geographical Society in 2004.

In June 2011 Sam spoke at the National Geographic store in London. He and his team had recently returned from completing a world first – an unsupported 500km trek up the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, from Terrace Bay to the Kunene River and across the dune sea.

We hope that you are able to join us from 19.00 on Thursday 2nd February to hear Sam speak, as well as to enjoy networking (aka having a few drinks and chatting with like-minded people!).

Places on this event are free, but must be pre-booked, and there are a maximum of 50 places available (first come, first served!). Please either find us on Facebook ‘Guildford Explorers’ or email Ash at ukoperations@lifesignsgroup.co.uk to confirm your place now. We look forward to seeing you there!

Last week Mikael Strandberg started on his latest expedition – to travel through Yemen on camelback from Zabid on the coast to the capital of Sanaa. The journey is 1300km in length but it is not just the physical challenge that makes this adventure interesting…

Mikael “I want to cross the most interesting and beautiful country on earth, Yemen, from the west to the east by camel. A journey starting in Al Hudaydah and ending at the Omani border. It is 1300 kilometres consisting of very demanding and extreme nature, through one of the hottest deserts on earth, Rub Al-Khali and through mountains over 3600 metres. I will travel in local dress, for comfort and to show my deep respect for the country, together with a Yemeni who speaks English.

It is a historical journey. I don´t know about anyone in modern times who have done a journey like this. And I don´t know about any film maker who both have had the experience of doing hard journeys like this and who also have the knowledge needed to do a profound, fair and bridge building documentary about this amazing country.

Through this documentary I want to try to explain, in a simple easy way, the world of the Arabs, Islam, Muslims and the Middle East. There’s no better place in the Middle east to do this than the oldest Arab country of them all, Yemen.

This I will do by crossing this geographically rich country from West to East by meeting ordinary Yemenis and documenting their daily lives. I can say, after having spent half a year in this extra ordinary country 2009 plus that I have spent the last 25 years visiting more than 120 countries, that Yemen is one of the most fantastic countries on earth, both visually and challenging. And with the most passionate people I have ever come across. I also want this fact to become known to the rest of the world!

It will be a positive, educating, culturally bridge building, raw, simple and inspiring documentary which will make us all more open, understanding, and lively and integrated!

I have spent the last 3 years building up contacts and knowledge about this enthralling part of the world. It will be my fourth documentary for Swedish TV which has caught the viewing attention of 1/3rd of the Swedes”

Next Plymouth Explorers meeting being held on Janurary the 4th. Our topic this month will be ‘The History Of Discovering The Geographic North Pole’ From guest speaker Antony Jinman

From 18:30 until 20:30. The talk will begin at 19:00.

The history of Arctic exploration is a fascinating tale that is largely over looked by the more recent exploits of expeditions to Antarctica. Arctic exploration goes back many hundreds of years from Victorian to modern day explorers but of course the Vikings and indeed the Indigenous people of the Arctic had also been living there for thousands of years. The history of Arctic exploration comes complete with many tragic stories including the mysterious disappearance of the Franklin Expedition and the failed return of Roald Amundsen’s rescue attempt of Italian Explorer Umberto Nobile in 1928. The foresight of Nansan and his Fram Expedition is one on the boldest of polar feats to date. There remains huge controversy over whether it was Cook or Peary who was actually first to the pole, a debate which is still going on today. During this evening Antony Jinman will give an informative talk on the history of Arctic exploration and the pioneers who helped unlock the mystery’s of the Arctic Ocean.

Treasury Café-Bar-Restaurant, Catherine Street, Royal Parade, Plymouth, Devon, PL1 2AD

Entry only £4! Free entry today if you sign up for our Club Membership: £15 for the year. Membership includes Education Through Expeditions monthly Newsletter and FREE entry to Plymouth events thereafter.

On May 1, 2012 Kris McNeal and Zach Chase will hit the saddle and begin their documented journey around the Great Lakes of North America. We will spend three months bicycling over 5,000 miles on a journey that will take us through 2 countries, 8 states, and over 20 major cities. As we undertake this epic journey we will be filming with High Definition cameras to document our experiences.

This expedition was born from our discovery of bicycle touring and our love for the Great Lakes region. We wish to put all of our efforts into getting a first hand and intimate look into discovering the importance of this amazing region.

By documenting our experiences we hope to create an educational adventure film capturing the importance of the Great Lakes in order to create a bond with those living near and beyond the scope of the Great Lakes, a region holding 1/5 of the world’s fresh surface water. This feature documentary will be the first to capture the Great Lakes region by bicycle, showing our interactions with the Great Lakes, its communities, and the incredible landscape that surrounds them.
